good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm ama daetz. it has been a day of brush fires around the bay area. a viewer sent us this dramatic picture of flames moving up an el sobrante hillside toward homes. it was shortly before 2:00 when the fire broke out. a bulldozer and crew were called in to help put out the 12-acre fire. the fire officials say the number of fires this your borders own the incredible. >> over 2,000 fires, well above average. normally the type of fire count we see in september or october, not in middle to late june. the flames bushed up to the fences of four homes but that was as far as it got. it took two hours for the fire crews to contain it. firefighters in osow lab know county are -- solan to county are on alert after a fire destroyed a house some cordelia

wedding dress and having this, felt like everything will by all right. our wedding will still happen. >> she also rescued her wedding dress moments before the fire destroyed their home. what a fire it was. sky 7hd beings overhead when embers blew into this old-town neighborhood, quickly igniting one house and four outbuildings. 175 firefighters were called in to help but the young couple's home could not be saved. heather's cousin has started raising money for the couple on go funding, so far she raised more than $600 and has an offer for aing we venue. >> we have a church opening up to do the reception because it was going to be at their house. they opened up for that. other than that, everything else is gone. >> heath is grateful for the outpouring of love and support. >> words cannot express -- hasn't been 24 hours yet and everyone is just so helpful and supportive. like it's nothing.

it's really humbling. >> she also has the ring, now a lucky charm for the future. in cordelia. abc7 news. in an effort to prevent brushfires, resident0s west marin county were urged to drop off green waste for free. fire officials asked results to bring their yard materials like trash,ans and light brush to get it composted, free of charge. >> everybody should be doing it. and some people do and some people are sloppy as heck and it's unfortunate. its they're sift and their neighbor's, too, so it's a wise thing to do. also good exercise. fire officials say home owners should clear a space of at least 30 feet from around their residence as a fire break. fire officials did warn this week the summer could be the worst we have seen in years because we have had so little precipitation. abc7 meteorologist frances dinglasan shows us the rain

totals this year. >> drought conditions expected to continue there is summer. live doppler 7hd showing us passing high clouds but, boy, it has been dry. let's see some numbers. we measure this from july 1st. now in many locations we're only between 40 to 50% of normal rainfall total. for example, in santa rosa, we're only 40% of normal, and we got 14.59 inches season to do it. san francisco, a little bit better. san jose, 42% of normal. and unfortunately, we have drive conditions expected through the summer, which makes it difficult for firefighters. you'll want to do everything you can to minimize the fire risk. and'll have warm temperatures coming up on the seven-day forecast. developing news in san francisco. two people suffered serious injuries after being hit bay car on telegraph hill. happened along a hilly section of grant avenue near francisco street this afternoon. a witness tells abc7 an suv

jumped the curb as man tried to parallel park. the suv then struck an elderly man and a little boy walking on the sidewalk. paramedics rushed the victims to the hospital. >> san francisco firefighters put out a hard to reach fire along geary boulevard in the richmond district. the fire broke out behind the five happiness chinese restaurant. the fire did not start inside the restaurant. crews cut holes in the restaurant's walls to reach those flames. nobody was hurt. firefighters helped prevent a roof deck fire from destroying a home on sacramento street in the city. there are initials reports a bucket of stain left on the deck sparked the fire. lombard street is one of san francisco's most popular tourist attractions. today it was temporarily shut down to drivers after residents complained before being overwhelmed by crowds. sergio quintana is live from the crooked block that just reopened to drivers moments ago.

reporter: for the last few minutes we have been watching lombard street because it has been cleared by a lot of the traffic patrol officers here because you can see cars are now starting to come down again for the last six hours, the crookedest street in the world was a brick-covered walkway for pedestrians. all afternoon, tourists from across the country and around the world sauntered down the red brick road and didn't have to dodge the drove of cars that usually clothes on hyde street leading to lombard. residents had been complaining in the last four years traffic was a nightmare with cars backed up for blocks trying to drive down the crooked street. this has become one of the most popular debts nations in the city, so closing the street to cars over the next few weekends is a trial run to see if this can be a more permanent solution to local gridlock. >> i have not tried to bring the car in. that's slow-going, but much slower going when you're three blocks away and moving two cars

at a time. >> it should be open to us because it's funny. i wouldn't want to be in it, either. >> today at noon traffic enforcement officers shut down the street to all vehicles, only allowing taxis and local residents access. that's the way it will work for the next few weekends to see if this will be a permanent plan. one resident i talked to said the real test will be on july 4th weekend. that's when tourists pack this neighborhood. it will be interesting to see how that works then. reporting live in san francisco, abc7 news. still ahead at 6:00, how a bay area family whose son received a life-saveing transplant is giving back to help other young kids. >> the changes we could see to the maverick surf contest with new

>> an update on breaking news from livermore. this is a live picture from the scene. one person is dead after a plane crash off north livermore road a half mile north of 580, happening just before 5:00.

the pilot was killed. sparks from the plane caused a brush fire that burned one and a half acres and has been contained. stay with abc7 for breaking updates and follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area. >> contra costa county fires kept this fire from spreading. nobody was hurt. officials say it was hard to fight the fire because the house was being used to store many items. firefighters also saved these kittens. one of the firefighters says he was looking for flames when he found the kittens. >> and i started to hear meows, and i couldn't tell if it was inside or outside. i stuck my head behind a refrigerator outside and i saw a little head move up out of some foam. we had firefighter foam and water. a little newborn kitten stuck his head up. the firefighters gave the kittens oxygen after their

ordeal. they appear to be less than a week old. animal control will take care of them. the world's wildest big wig surf contest mavericks is under new managements. according to the santa cruz sentinel, the new owner wants to make the event mainstream like the world cup or super bowl. the company will try to line up a major network to broadcast maverick. also be branding changes and a bigger presence on social media. as for the surfers, they want to help pay the expenses of the surfers, many of whom travel from overseas with just 24 hours notice. each year two dozen of the world's best big wave surfers are invited to try to tame monster waves off half moon bay. >> for a look at the we can outside today on the first day of summer, let's get to meteorologist frances dinglasan. >> good evening, everyone. cloudy in half moon bay all day. live doppler 7hd showing us just a few of the passing high clouds but it's starting to clear out. here's a view from the east bay hills looking wetter toward san

francisco from emeryville, and you can see the clouds in the distance. it's 57 in san francisco, oakland, 63. san carlos, 66. san jose, 69. morgan hill, 75. half moon bay, 55. it's been cool because of the clouds. san jose, starting to see more blue skies as well. current temperatures elsewhere in the 60s and 70s. 76 in santa rosa. 68 in napa and in novato, and 70 roz through fairfield, concord, and livermore. once again we're looking from the east bay hills now out towards the west, and you see the low clouds will move in overnight, as well as patchy fog near the coast. it will be cool at the coast, warm inland again tomorrow. then this seasonal pattern continues, and stays steady the next few days and here's i would. an area of low pressure and high pressure and the jet stream fairly steady as well as the sea breeze, and with a zonal flow with the jet stream, that means

we'll have little change of the next few days. i hope you liked today because we're going to see more. overnight temperatures will be in the 50s for the most part. cooler in santa rosa at 49. 51 in san francisco, 52 in oakland, and 53 in san jose. tomorrow morning, see the low clouds and patchy fog spill into the bay as well. by lunchtime it will retreat back to the coast, but here it will stick around all day, even in the afternoon, temperatures in the 60s, 70s around the bay and 80s inland. so comfortable in the south bay. look for a high of 78 in san jose, sunshine. 76, sunnyvale, lower part of the peninsula, '6 in mountain view, then cooler at the coast. 63 in pacific camp downtown san francisco, partly cloudy, 64, and mild and warm actually in parts of the north bay. petaluma, an event there, 78. you can probably be okay with
