live from the kgo broadcast center this is abc news. >> all of a sudden the flames started to race up the hill and it was really intense. >> a fire comes dangerously close to homes in contra costa county. tonight, firefighters warn this fire season is only going to get worse. good evening. thank you for joining us. it burned fast, hot and still watched by fire crews tonight. abc 7 news reporter is live in contra costa with more on the fire that got close to homes. lisa? >> reporter: very true. the backyards of these homes on fascination circle suffered the brunt of the damage. as you can see, the fire crews

are back there checking the lines. they will be doing this all night long to make sure this fire stays out. they fought the fire from the air and from the ground as it leapt to life on this dry, grassy hillside. >> it was i scary, absolutely scary. >> reporter: homeowners also leapt in to action without much success. >> i dropped the hose and took off. >> reporter: it burned several retaining walls and trees. everyone, even firefighters, expected the palmer's house to be destroyed. the flames were 30 feet tall when they reached the backyard. >> i started with a garden hose when it was in this area, just outside of the fence. but then before long, it got right over here and just jumped. >> the wind just blew it. it just jumped. it was crazy. it went to the left and then the

yesterday. today the owners are looking toward rebuilding. sky 7 hd captured these pictures of the fire. it burned several out buildings along with the thornton's home. today they found her engainingment ring in the charred bedroom. >> i saved my wedding dress already. it felt like everything is going to be all right. our wedding is still going to happen. >> her cousin started a campaign on go fund me.com to raise money to help the couple. a local church has offered to host their wedding reception. it was supposed to take place at their home. a pilot is dead after his experimental aircraft crashed near livermore. the plane crashed in a field north of 580. authorities say the pilot was probably in trouble from the time he took off. >> we have witnesses that say they saw smoke, and basing on the pilot's action a's f he in

compared to average. so not only did we cool down from yesterday. we were still also below average in many locations. liver more, normally at 83 hit 80. that is three below normal. san jose ten below normal. a slight warmup with the accu-weather seven-day forecast as well as a chance of rain. i will have details coming up. >> thank you. california's drought is so bad it is ending family summer fun in san mateo county. the park will be closed the rest of the season because of low water levels. the park had previously been closed through the end of the month. today a pilot program kicked off in san francisco. popular lombard street, the so-called crookedest street in the world closed from noon to 6:00 p.m. this will happen over four weekends. it hadn't actually made the congestion worse. instead of cars the road was clogged with people today.

abc 7 news reporter is live with the story. >> reporter: wouldn't you know it, you caught me as there are no cars coming down lombard. i can tell you, however, as the street reopened at 6:00 there were so many cars coming down. they had been waiting to come down. this is a pilot project, as you mentioned, so they can see if solving the traffic doesn't cause any others. for six hours, they strolled, snapped pictures and soaked in the wonder of the crookedest street in the world. one of the city's most popular sites. >> this is one of the top five. we wanted to go to alcatraz as well. >> reporter: they have had trouble getting through the gridlock of tourists hoping to drive down the street. this is sample, cars lined up past 6:00, when they are allowed to drive down again. >> from the top of lombard street it will be a 20 to 40-minute wait on a daily basis

at peak hours. that is magnified during the summertime. >> reporter: lombard street will be closed to vehicle traffic between noon noon and 6:00 on saturday and sunday to see if it is a viable option. >> it doesn't seem to be too much chaos and it looks clear. during heavy weekend this locks up up here. >> reporter: so far he's a fan of the experiment but he says the real test will come in a couple of weekends. >> this is the first one. we'll see how it goes. 4th of july will be a challenge, i'm sure. it always is. >> reporter: residents are given a pass allowing them to drive down the street to get home and cabs are also allowed to drive down. for repeat visitors, the walk is an opportunity to change up the experience. have you ever been to lombard before? >> i have. i have. >> reporter: did you drive down? >> i drove down. it was awesome. now we're going to try to walk it. >> reporter: for the next four weekends, they will check to see if they can manage traffic.

they will also look at other things including parking in this neighborhood. we notice a lot of people have tried to find parking so they could walk down. reporting live in san francisco, abc 7 news. >> thank you. contra costa county firefighters saved some small lives today when flames gutted a vacant home in pittsburgh. it took an hour to get the fire under control this afternoon. one of the firefighters heard some kittens crying for help while he looked for more flames. >> i stuck my head down behind a refrigerator that was outside. i saw a little head move. we had some firefighter foam and water. and a little newborn kitten stuck his head up and meowed. >> reporter: the firefighters gave the kittens oxygen before animal control officers took them to a shelter for a checkup. san francisco firefighters say they face many challenges fighting a fire that a burned

a coast guard helicopter rescued four people who got stranded rowing to hawaii. you are looking at coast guard video of the rescue. the people were participated in a great pacific race when their boat took on water. they were found 75 miles west of san luis abyss poe. they were hoisted in the chopper. a florida couple is recovering from treading water for 14 hours in the atlantic ocean. the couple fell off their boat 6:00 last night. they were not wearing life vests. the boat still in gear kept going. the couple drifted miles before they were rescued early this morning. despite hypothermia and jellyfish bites they were fine. a family hosted a blood drive to say thanks to the donors who kept a boy alive for

over the last 12 hours we see the pressure bringing us a sea breeze and the passing clouds allowed temperatures on the cool side. with a zonal flow where the jet stream moves across, little change over the next few days. i wanted to show you a longer term forecast model which shows an area of low pressure dropping possibly as far south on thursday to bring us a slight chance of rain to the bay area. we're talking slight chance of rain. we're talking mainly 100th of an inch. we will keep our fingers crossed. overnight lows in the low 50s for the most part with the exception of santa rosa a. cool and 49 there. 52 oakland. 53 san jose and then you'll wake up to clouds tomorrow morning. that will pull back to the coast. it will stay cloudy at the beaches tomorrow afternoon where temperatures will be in the 60s. a lot of sunshine everywhere
