>> good morning. i'm cornell bernard in for carolyn tyler today." let's start with a quick first look at the weather. good morning, lisa. >> good morning. we are looking at patchy fog in the city. 5:48 was the official sunrise setting at 8:45 and a nice-looking view. you can see some of the marine layer. we will lose two seconds of day light today. the first full day of summer. 49 in morgan hill. and looking at 54 half moon bay. in san jose with a clear start we are going to look for temperatures later on today in the south bay upper 70s, maybe a few 80s. low to mid-60s along the coast. west winds up to 20 and maybe a few gusts near 30 miles an hour along the cloudy san mateo coast. you could see maybe 87 in brentwood. we will tell you how long the

seasonal weather lasts and talk about perhaps the chance of a sprinkle or two later on in the upcoming work week. >> all right, lisa. see you soon. thank you very much. well, this morning firefighters warned that fire season is only going to get worst. the warning comes after a fire comes dangerously close to homes in the east bay. we have the details from contra costa county. >> reporter: they fought the fire from the air and from the ground as it length to life on the dry, grassy hillside. >> it was scary, absolutely scary. >> homeowners leaped into action without much success. >> i dropped the hose and just took off. >> the fire crept into six yards, burned several retaining walls and trees. everything expected the ballmers' house to be destroyed. the flames were 30 feet tall when they reached the backyard. >> i started withed garden hose when it was in this area. it was outside the fence.

but then before long it got right over here and just jumped. >> the wind just blew it and it just jumped and it was crazy. it went to the left, and then it went to the right. >> bobby and phil ran for their lives as the fire consumed their shed, which was just ten feet from their home. fire crews arrived just in time. they saved the home. words could hardly express the ball percent' gratitude. >> the smile on your face says it all. >> thank you so much. thank you. >> even as the chief admitted, this could have been a lot worse. >> we could have had a lot of homes with the way the winds are moving right now. it's very difficult. large flames like this. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> the contra costa fire marshal tells us there has already been significantly more fires so far this year than usual.

usually we are at this count in september or october, not mid-june. embers from a wildfire blue across 680 and ag nighted a home. yesterday the owners looked toward rebuilding. sky 7hd captured she's these amazing pictures of the fire. it burned several outbuildings along with heather and evan thornton's home. yesterday they found heather's engagement ring buried in the charred remnants of the bedroom. >> i saved by wedding dress already, and this is just like, everything is going to be already. the wet willing still happen. >> health are's cousin started a campaign to help raise money for the couple. a local church has offered to host their upcoming wed league accepting. the wedding reception was supposed to take place at their house. contra costa firefighters saved very small lives yesterday when flames gut add vacant home in pittsburgh.

fire raced through a home being used for storage along hillcrest avenue. it took about an hour to get it under control. one of the firefighters heard kittens. >> i stuck my head by a refrigerator and i saw a little head move out of this foam. a baby kitten, newborn kitten stuck its head up and meuwed. >> they gave them oxygen before bringing them to a shelter for a check up. >> in san francisco firefighters say they face many challenges fighting a fire that burned between two buildings. it broke out behind the five happiness chinese restaurant. they had to cut holes in the restaurant's walls to reach the flames. they don't think the flames started inside the building and no one was hurt. a pilot is dead after his experimental aircraft crashed near livermore. it happened before 5:00 p.m. yesterday. the pilot took off from the

municipal airport and crashed in the field in 580. the plane was probably in trouble from the time he took off. >> we have witnesses that say they saw smoke. based on the pilot's action, if he in fact jumped from the plane, it would lead us to believe perhaps it was on fire and he was in a very, very difficult situation and chose to jump out. >> the pilot's body was found 300 yards from the plane. sparks from the crash set a brush fire that was contained after burning an acre and a and a half. a man and boy suffered serious injuries after a s.u.v. jumped a curve and hit them in san francisco. driver was trying to parallel park when he hit two of the victims walking on the sidewalk. it happened along a hilly stretch of grant avenue near francisco street around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. a man from san leandro has died at a music festival in

las vegas. he was taken to a hospital. the county coroner has not said hu he died. this is a daisy carnival. 140,000 people attended friday night. las vegas police report there were 250 calls for medical help. the death comes after a 15-year-old girl died of a drug overdose at the same festival back in 2010. a police chase ended with a stolen car crashed on treasure island. surveillance video shows the end of the chase last night. you see the people run away from the car. chp officers had to stop the car because it's occupants weren't wearing seatbelts. chp arrested the driver and released the passenger. >> the closer of a popular tourist spot was start this had weekend. lombard street, the so-called cookeddest street in the world, closed down today from noon to six. it will happen over four

weekends to ease traffic congestion. but instead of cars, it was clogged with people yesterday. we have more from lombard street. >> reporter: for six hours they strolled, snapped pictures and took in one of the most popular sites in the city, the world's crookedest street. >> this is you on one of our top five. we wanted to go to alcatraz and we wanted to come here also. >> over the years residents have had trouble getting through the gridlock of tourists hoping to drive down the street. this is just a sample. cars lined up past six when they are allowed to drive down again. >> it's magnified during the summertime. >> lombard street will be close today vehicle traffic between noon and six on saturday and sunday to see if it's a viable option. >> there doesn't seem to be too much chaos here. in fact, it looks really clear.

intersection of harbor parkway. also island drive. and also bay view drive and shoreline drive should experience closers and delays and until about 1:00 p.m. the first race gets underway at 8:00. tomorrow officials in marin county will take up a proposal for a solar facility that would power more than 500 homes. according to our media partner, the marin independent journal, the proposed facility would be located on a former rock quarry outside of novato. the $6 million project would have more than solar panels that would generate under two meg watts of electricity. electricity would be delivered to marin clean energy via nearby powerlines. 4,000. >> the ongoing drought is taking its toll on summer fun for campers in san mateo county. due to conditions, officials say no camping allowed in memorial park for the duration of the season which he understands in october. campers with reservations will be contacted by phone or e-mail

>> developing news a teenager is dead and three others injured following a shooting. it happened before 1:00 this morning at a house party. responding officers found a teenage boy who was shot in the chest and three other people were also shot. they were taken to the hospital where the teenager died. the suspect is described as a black male wearing sweat pants

and a t-shirt. he got away. two others may have been in the car as well. developing news out of south korea where military authorities have surrounded a soldier who killed five comrades at a border outpost. authorities were trying to persuade the soldier, identified only by his family name, yim, to surrender. he opened fire saturday night with his standard issued assault rifle killing five fellow soldiers and wounding seven others. a coast guard helicopter rescued four people who got stranded row to go hawaii. they were participating in a race. , great pacific race. their boat took on water. they were found 75 miles west of san luis yesterday. the rowers were picked up. a florida couple were rescued after treadingwater for 14 hours in the pacific ocean.

they fell off their boat friday night and were not wearing life vests. the boast, that was still in gear, kept on going. they drifted for miles. besides hypothermia and jellyfish stings, they were fine. team usa's second world cup game is today against portugal. there will be viewing parties for the match-up. there will also be viewing at st. james part in san jose. all of it gets underway at 3:00 ." with the u.s. winning its first match begins ghana, everyone is waiting to see how they will fare against portugal. we have more. coastline and also filtering in parts of the bay. the marine layer is shallow, about 1,000 feet. it will allow for the cool sea breeze again to keep the coast just near 60 degrees. here's a live shot from the east bay hills camera where you see the fog. 49 in morgan hill and 56 in oakland. the southwest wind blowing through the delta, allowing for temperatures there to be fairly seasonal. and emeryville this morning, you can see the fog. 51 in napa. 45 novato, and 47 santa rosa. 54 concord, and finally in san jose nice and sunny with some low clouds and fog just at the coast around the san mateo area with cool conditions there. warm inland. and the seasonal pattern continues right through wednesday. after that we are looking at perhaps a strong trough that will drop out of the gulf of alaska. but it's high pressure situated

offshore that keeps the sea breeze steady and temperatures cool at the coast. we should get into a little bit of sunshine. we will call it partly sunny there. little change as we go through monday and tuesday. temperatures could come up two or three degrees as the ridge begins to get a little closer to the coast. and then comes the big cool down. we have been so dry. in fact, near the driest year on record, but not quite. you can see with the percentages of normal. 40 percent in santa rosa. and just 14 1/2 inches of rain. 53% in san francisco. we will add to the totals? no, not likely. here's what's happening by wednesday night into thursday. the strong system will bring rain to the pacific northwest and mendocino county. perhaps sonoma. and down through marin county maybe a couple hundredth. climatological speaking we don't get rain in june, but stranger things have happened.

stopped, the mississippi river in minnesota won't crest until wednesday. islamic insurgents have landed more blows against the fragile iraqi military. they captured three more strategic towns yesterday. here's more on the crisis in iraq. >> iraq is marching into a sectarian showdown. an entire country under siege. 20,000 defiant shea fighters parade through baghdad. rocket launchers are ready, vow vowing to take on the uprising. they are showing their numbers and other strong holds. this is their growing responses to the isus. they are advancing on two more

towns. they are opening up the valley, leading to baghdad. an entire brigade of iraqi soldiers were killed. some soldiers are locked in a bitter fight to maintain control of the oil refinery. the u.s. wants to stop this from escalating, but limit its own involvement. u.s. officials meeting here with iraqi officials are sending in up to 300 military advisors to assist. the violence is driving a growing humanitarian crisis. thousands more are forced from their homes each day. angry curds are dumping garbage and tires in the streets to protest gas shortages, and that's sending food prices through the roof. and life-saving medications are now in short supply. the conflict taking an increasing toll on the iraqi people with no relief in sight. bc news, new york. in san francisco there was a rally urging the united states not to go into another war yesterday. it was a national day of action. the protest was mirrored in other cities across the country, as well. organizers believe nothing has changed in iraq since 2003 when

california health officials say two people have been infected with west nile virus in the state. infections occurred in san joaquin in contra costa counties. authorities say either person is seriously ill. west virus virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. only about 2 of 10 bitten will develop symptoms. symptoms can be body aches and fever. high schools in san francisco have come up with a new way to overcome the boredom of summer school. in biology students found water, mud and fresh air to make things a bit more interesting. lyanne melendez explains. >> everyone in group 1 or site 1 people, young scientists, will gather up here. >> welcome to summer school in the park. >> like we practiced. thank you. you may begin. site 2. let's go!

>> students from different high schools in san francisco are making up a biology class needed in order to eventually graduate. most are sophomores and juniors. >> they are here because, well, let's just say they didn't do too well in biology. so instead of relearning the material in the classroom, they will spend five weeks learning from mother nature. >> for the next hour they will record the temperature of the creek at glen park canyon and take samples. students also measure the ph levels on the spot. they will also take some mud back with them to study the microorganisms they can't see and record every new observation. >> letting them look at the water under the microscope and they will see all these little things in there and it leads to a lot of questions. >> everything they take from the park they will study in a way they never experienced before. >> i like to see more of nature for biology. like we get to learn more and visualize.

full forecast. in the central valley the sheriff's department said, believe it or not, people are actually stealing water. one homeowner whose tank holds owns 2500 gallons, over the past months someone has stole his water eight times. he said the thieves drive up to their backyard, they kick in their fence and drain the tank. it costs $275 to refill it. his daughter said it's unbearable. >> it's horrible. we go without showering, we can't flush our toilets, we can't wash our hands when they get dirty. it's horrible. >> the family put a sign on the tank in an effort to detour thieves. they say surveillance cameras are the next step. some people in san francisco revisited their childhood yesterday. a huge slip and slide was set up. it was part of a promotional stunt. word of the event spread through social need jacques word of mouth. not a bad way to spend the day. that looks awesome.

sunny san jose, featuring upper 70s, maybe a few 80s around morgan hill today. cool with clouds along the coast. we will look for the seasonal weather pattern to continue throughout not only today, but looks like monday and tuesday. the ridge is going to get just a little bit closer, and that may bump up the temperatures a couple degrees. but we will not lose our steady sea breeze. that will keep the winds very breezy out of the northwest. up to 20 miles an hour. maybe even 30 miles an hour. and by the middle of the week we will see a stronger system push down from the north. and that could bring clouds and maybe a few sprinkles. boy, to could we use it. anywhere from 40% of normal to 53% of normal for last season. and that has only translated into anywhere from six to fourteen inches of rain. which really up in the north bay we could see 30 inches of rain for average up by santa rosa and
