breaking news this morning, secretary of state john kerry in baghdad as radical militants expand their control. the tense meetings he's expected to have, and stern message for the country's prime minister. we're live with the details. world cup heartbreak. a late-game shocker disrupts the party for americans and the players. but it's not over yet for team usa. direct hit. a man is struck by lightning, knocking him out of his boots. why doctors and nurses were amazed when he got to the hospital. and great encounter. a fisherman hoping to catch dinner got something much more dangerous on camera.

good monday morning. i'm matt gutman. and i'm reena ninan. we begin with breaking news from iraq. secretary of state john kerry landed in baghdad just a short time ago to hold high-level meetings with the country's leaders. >> kerry's visit comes as more cities fall under militant control. tahman bradley has the latest. >> reporter: the u.s. is hoping that the iraqi government can unite the religious and ethnic factions and stop the bloody violence. >> this is a critical moment to urge iraq's leaders to rise above sectarian motivations. >> reporter: but isis fighters continue gaining ground. the jihadist group captured four more towns over the weekend, and they're closing in on a city on the jordanian border. if they seize that city, they could grab key water displays and damage the electricity grid. the iraqi military is fighting back. thousands of young iraqis are lining up.

but the forces are out of hellfire missiles. and isis has hit dozens of tanks. and in addition to the 300 military advisers america is sending, they are saying that u.s. air strikes are needed. >> we have an agreement whenever that the new iraqi democratic government is threatened, america ready to help. >> reporter: many republicans want president obama to order an air assault. >> i think that we should cut off isis's access to their command and control structure in syria, and i think that involves primarily air power. >> reporter: back in the united states from rhode island to california, americans are rallying against further u.s. involvement in iraq. >> this is the slippery slope back into a messy situation in iraq. we are very opposed to it. >> reporter: there are fears about oil disruptions from the iraq conflict. so, secretary kerry will be talking about that in the region. reena and matt. >> tahman bradley live in washington. thank you.

breaking overnight, israel is striking back after a deadly attack in the golan heights. they carried out a series of air strike this is morning, hitting nine targets inside syria. retaliation for the cross-border missile strike yesterday that killed an israeli teenager. a military spokesperson called it an unprovoked act of aggression that will not be tolerated. now to the world cup and some wild swings of emotions for team usa fans. >> boy, there were wild celebrations when the u.s. took the lead with just a couple of minutes left to go against portugal, but that turned to shock when portugal struck back to tie the match at two. >> and abc's paula faris watched the match in rio. good morning, paula. >> reporter: good morning. what a thriller last night in manaus. the u.s. had this game all but won until the final seconds of the game. the american spirit never gives up, and this team didn't either.

they never led until the 81st minute when their captain clint dempsey gave them a 2-1 lead. and the world's best player, cristiano ronaldo, we have been talking about him, had his chances, but he couldn't take advantage. and credit jermaine jones, he took advantage and he scored. that's his first-career world cup goal. that tied it, and as we showed you, dempsey scored the go-ahead goal. but with 30 seconds remaining, you could hear hearts breaking around the world. i'm sure they were breaking in new york city tonight. this happened, portugal, on the brink, scoring the game-tying equalizing goal. so, again, the u.s. ties portugal 2-2. that mean's thursday's game against germany is of utmost importance. but team usa can advance to the round of 16, round two, with a

win or a draw against the germans. reena and matt. >> thank you, paula. it was heartbreaking, but team usa is still very much alive here. >> completely. the team we to want win is portugal to win, the portugal/ghana game. very important. >> and this is a very tough bracket for the u.s., not called the group of death for nothing. very ominous name. >> they're doing well. stay with abc news as we follow team usa all the way to the world cup. excitement leading up to thursday's match against germany. and there's more wicked weather this morning from wisconsin to texas. there were reports overnight of possible tornados in the texas panhandle. wind gusts of 93 miles an hour. severe thunderstorm watches in effect. overnight nearly 8,000 customers are without power in the amarillo area. this morning, commuters in and around minneapolis/st. paul, could be somewhat of a nightmare today. bridges and highways are closed because of flooding or swollen rivers.

this has been the wettest june in 140 years, even though meteorologists expect a short break in the weather today, the rivers are still rising. and there could be more heavy rain today from minneapolis and the great lakes all the way down to the gulf coast and into the southeast. eastern colorado may see some severe storms. the east will be warmer with a cooler weekend. most of the south will be in the 90s and the 80s around the great lakes. temperatures will range from the 70s to the 90s on the west coast. a fast-moving brush fire is burning in those hot, dry southern california mountains. the fire broke out in the l.a. suburb of glendale and spread to 150 acres. several trapped hikers had to be air lifted from the scene which could be seen for miles. no evacuation orders have been issued so far, but some families left on their own. plans to transport central american immigrants from texas to california for processing are on hold. overnight the border patrol canceled the two flights scheduled for today, no reason was giving.

the processing facilities in south texas have been overwhelmed by a flood of immigrants, many of them children from central america. army sergeant bowe bergdahl is getting outpatient care after leaving the hospital. the army said his reintegration process is proceeding with exposure to more people and a gradual increase in social interaction. he was freed in a controversial prison swap at the end of may. three men who broke out of quebec jail in a helicopter are due in court today after a heavily-armed s.w.a.t. team captured them yesterday. the men were captured in a tenth floor upscale condo in montreal earlier this month. they were plucked from a prison courtyard by a helicopter triggering an international man hunt. search for the mission, californ f but his dog, duke, has been found in the parking lot where he parked his car. he was exhausted but he was in good health, and an experienced outdoorsman, herdman

coffee may be getting more expensive. the company will raise prices tomorrow anywhere from 5 to 20 cents on some of its drinks. the packaged coffee in the supermarkets getting more expensive, a dollar per bag. no reason was given. coffee bean prices are up, but that's only a small part of starbucks overhead. and the dow set a record friday, closing just short of 17,000. the s&p 500 closed at a new high. investors are optimistic, especially after the federal reserve said interest rates will remain low. this week, we'll get several reports on the housing market. and yet another big auto recall announced overnight. this one involving nissan and honda. more than 2 million vehicles worldwide being recalled to fix flaws in air bags. all those air bags were involved

were installed in 13 models between 2000 and 2005. sequels ruled at the box office, "think like a man 2." it raked in $30 million. edging out "22 jump street," which slipped to second place with $29 million. looking at this video, it's hard to believe no one was hurt. only the driver and the passenger were aboard this transit bus for the disabled in atlanta when it caught fire. both escaped. no word on what caused fire on interstate 88. the problem on interstate 85 in atlanta this morning won't be fire, but water. watch out for flooding on the roads in the midwest and the south. highways in the great lakes region and upper plains will also be wet. if you're flying, airport delays are possible in denver, dallas and detroit. and now to a near-tragedy in georgia. a man walks away after getting hit by lightning. sean o' connor was raking leaves when a bolt of lightning struck him in the foot knocking him out of his boots. he thought he was hit by a tree limb. but saw the steel-toe boots

ripped open and smouldering. >> i had blood in my mouth, i felt like i had a real bad sunburn. this is the boot that i had on my right-hand foot. >> the left side of his body was in pain, and by the time his wife got him to the hospital, his heart rate had dropped. but he went home the next day. >> you could say he was lead-footed. and an incredible rescue after a couple fell off their boat into the atlantic with no one around for miles. they managed to stay alive for nearly 14 hours while treading water. the couple drifted from key lar go nearly 75 miles north before being rescued by surprised fisherman. they said the man and woman were weak and dehydrated. >> personally, i was surprised -- i was amazed they were lasting that long in the water. i have never seen something like that before. >> maybe god put us there to save them. who knows why. >> the couple did not have the life jackets on when they fell off.

the coast guard said the boat was in high gear and drifted away. a wild car chase in texas after a father and daughter took off after a group of burglars. plastic surgeon kevin smith and his 22-year-old daughter were pulling up to their house when they noticed a red pickup truck backing out of their driveway. they decided to chase the men. at one point the truck backed into them, and turned around and crashed into the family head on. that september sent them into the ditch. the two suspects were arrested, the father and daughter are okay. hope solo, will be in a courtroom near seattle today. she spent the weekend in jail on suspicion of assaulting her sister and nephew early saturday morning. her attorney says she was incident and claimed that solo was injured in what he calls an under unfortunate incident. solo won two olympic gold medals with the u.s. olympic team and has participated in abc's

right shoulder with multiple cars on the right shoulder so there is yellow traffic that is slow anyway or yellow sensors. hopefully, they will get the big rig out of there before the commute is underway. otherwise, we have road work out there, west 580 from san pablo to the 80 split we have fog over the waldo grade and the golden gate bridge has fog but not limiting the visibility. you may want to slow down out of the tunnel. preparing news, san francisco police are appealing to the public for tips after more suspicious fires over the week. the latest was a few hours ago. amyfield is in the south of market area. kristen, we are at 2nd and howard street, a high-rise is unconstruction and the arsonist did strike here. this happened at 11:30 yesterday morning, a witness heard a loud bang and said they saw a can

flying. police say nothing was damaged here and no one was hurt. this is one of two suspected arrest sons that happened yesterday, and the other was on mission near st. patrick church. these two the latest in a string of arsons, with nearly a dozen in the last few weeks in the south of market area, and most of the damage and the most dangerous was at a parking garage at the plaza. police and fire have now formed a special or son task force to try and figure out who is doing there and why. they are looking at surveillace camera cam toured from different cameras around the area. some construction sites have been hit and those companies have hired additional security guards to watch out for what appears to be a serial arsonist. residents eva
