flood stage and it still has another three feet to go before it stops. this morning, rushing water is closing bridges, swallowing roads and highways across minnesota. as the water keeps rising -- >> we live right on top of that hill right up there. but no way to get there. >> reporter: flooding on the ground, and fire from above. this oil tank going up in flames in canadian, texas, overnight, after reportedly being struck by lightning during a relentless supercell. some of the biggest devastation caused by flash flooding to the south and west of dallas. >> i have never seen it like this before. >> reporter: this neighborhood is under water, in some areas, more than 7 inches of rain. >> a nice little light show. whoa! >> reporter: severe storms brought havoc across parts of the nation, along the gulf coast, wind gusts up to 60 miles an hour. and colorado and montana, lots of hail, covering this road like a blanket. and in kansas, blinding rain

talks on how to handle the uprising. abc's jon karl has the latest from the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, this is a dangerous and high-stakes trip for the secretary of state. he just wrapped up a meeting with iraqi prime minister al maliki that lasted for two years. coming out of the meeting, kerry was heard saying that is good, but this comes at a time of mounting frustration with the government and the unwillingness to overcome the divides tearing that country apart. shortly before he went to baghdad, the secretary of state suggested it's time for new leadership in iraq. >> and the president suggests that as well, even though it's not up to him to pick the iraqi leaders. meannwhile, we have 300 advisers in the region prepared to go, about a hundred heading into baghdad. can they make a difference with the iraqi army crumbling? >> reporter: there's no optimism th that group will make a difference unless they can make

dramatic moments in court as three tv reporters were sentenced to prison in cairo. the reporters for the english channel held in cages during court now face seven years behind bars after being convicted of broadcasting false information to undermine the government in egypt. al jazeera calls that absurd. the verdict came just hours after the u.s. urged egypt to uphold freedom of press. and back at home, fire tore through this apartment building in denver. it's difficult see, but on the far right side of the screen, one family was seen climbing down with bed sheets they tied together escape the flames. eight people were injured. and a near-death experience for a georgia man struck by lightning while raking his yard. sean o'connor thought a tree branch fell on him, but then he saw smoke come from his steel toe boot. >> i felt like i had a real bad sunburn on my leg.

pie in the back. apparently he's not on the paleo diet we're going to be talking about coming up in a little bit. >> i wondered how you were going to tie that all in. all right, thank you. now to the escaped convict on the loose, terrifying an entire countryside, taking a hostage on his run from the law. abc's gio benitez has the breaking details. >> reporter: this morning a desperate man hunt for timothy buffington. he's armed and dangerous. he escaped in pine bluff, arkansas, saturday evening. during his escape, he took a woman hostage. but that woman was able to escape unharmed. but buffington remains at large, believed to have a shotgun and a backpack full of ammunition. pine bluff and the surrounding communities on high alert. >> lock my doors and slept with one eye open. >> reporter: the search hampered by the densely-wooded landscape.

buffington was 15 years into a 20-year sentence for the murder of his ex-wife. prison officials say he was a model inmate, trusted so much he was transferred to that pine bluff facility. a low-security work release unit where only the most well-behaved can hone job skills before being released back into society. and right now, it's unclear how he escaped. buffington's 5'6", 180 pounds, with a scar on his upper left arm and right wrist. and he was last seen wearing a white prison jump suit. >> definitely a dangerous guy. thank you. now to sticker shock at starbucks, prices will go up starting tomorrow. take-home coffee beans will cost more, too. abc's matt gutman has the details. >> reporter: it wasn't the jolt starbucks customers were expecting. as they are caffeinating the prices, a 5 to 20 cent price spike per cup, and up to a buck per package of coffee.

just last week they said they were optimistic that prices wouldn't budge. >> the cost of coffee is low cost given the other expenses. >> that venti latte that i enjoyed, price is going to remain steady? >> i hope so. >> reporter: but the cost is going up. prices for medium and large coffees, known as grande and venti, will be especially frothy, up between 10 and 15 cents. and mocha drinks -- up to 14 cents. in new york city, it can cost a whopping $4.65 and that's before tax. they blamed competitive dynamics and cost structure. costs like materials, labor, and rent space. and you can expect to feel that coffee burn tomorrow when the price hike kicks in.

golden retriever had been seen wandering about 11 miles where they lost murphy, they immediately drove to the camp site with the blanket and mr. braun's hat. they set out the belongings, hoping the familiar scents might draw the mysterious dog in. and then -- >> i knew that's murphy. it was curled up with its head on the hat. >> reporter: but murphy's appearance had changed after spending months in the wild. they feared it might not be their pup. but their doubt was erased when they spotted a scar above her right elbow. >> it's very, very feint. right there, you can see it. >> reporter: and her telltale comfort with the family. >> it's truly her, unbelievable story. >> reporter: morgan was a baby when murphy went missing. her parents say this picture shows her telling murphy they'll never lose her again.

the family grieving this is morning said what happened to 22 month old cooper harris was an honest and tragic mistake. on wednesday, 33-year-old justin ross harris buckled their son into the suv and headed to his job just outside atlanta. it was seven hours later when he noticed his son still in the backseat. he said he had forgotten to drop the child off at day care, and said he immediately pulled into this shopping center. witnesseses say he rushed to save his son. >> what have i done, laid him on the ground, trying to resuscitate him. he was not responding. >> reporter: the young child was in the hot car for several hours on a 90-degree day. after searching his office, the police arrested the grieving father and charged him with felony murder and child endangerment. he's plead not guilty. >> until we get more information, right now these charges will stand. >> reporter: the father's arrest is causing outrage, some

agreeing with police and shocked at what happened, but many saying the father suffered enough. the justice system can't punish ross more than he punished himself. only more pain for a grieving family. supporters online have raised $18,000 for his defense. an average of 38 children die every year in a hot car. last year, 44. in atlanta, 22 have died this way since 1990. public safety advocates say these are usually accidents and usually happen to the most loving and protective parents of every color and socioeconomic background. the one constant is that the parents had a change in their routine the morning of the death. we don't know if that happened in this case. harris appears in court next month. >> steve, thanks. abc's dan abrams joins us now. just a horrifying story. not your typical murder case. >> as a father of a boy who's

almost the same age, it's heartbreaking. it's not at all a typical murder case. the charge is felony murder. meaning they charged him with cruelty to a child. and because there was a death as a result of that felony, they can charge him with felony murder. but i have to tell you, the way that the police are talking here, making comments that there's more to the story than people know. one 34-year-old vet involved in the case said this case shocks the conscience. that kind of language suggests that they think there's something else to the story. >> so they may not believe it was an accident. but how do you prove that? >> well, first of all, if they can get computer records, they have done search warrants at his home and office, et cetera. they could try to demonstrate it in that way. they would say that they don't necessarily have to prove that it was more than an accident. the level of recklessness and the conduct. but again, i don't think they would have charged him with this

crime -- i would hope they wouldn't charge him unless it's something more than an accident. >> even if it was an accident, he could be charged with felony murder? >> yes, in theory. the level of recklessness could be so great that you could have an underlying felony where there could be felony murder. this goes to the discretion of the authorities here. and you have to hope that if they believe this was a mistake, just a horrible mistake, that they wouldn't charge him with murder. >> thanks very much, dan abrams. now to a break in the case of a firefighter missing for more than a week. lost somewhere in treacherous california mountains. they found the dog, the dog he wanted to find when he disappeared. abc's david wright has the latest. >> reporter: as of this morning, it's one full week of searching for mike herdman who a friend says vanished in the california wilderness while chasing after his dog. overnight, a vigil held for him

in his hometown of arcadia -- late sunday, the first bit of good news for friends and family anxiously waiting at the trailhead. after two failed attempts, rescuers managed to find and save his dog, duke. >> as soon as they called the dog, the dog came over. the dog is obviously very tired, but appears to be in good health and being seen by a vet already. >> reporter: but still no sign of duke's owner. herdman's buddy told authorities when he ran off, he was wearing only a t-shirt and shorts. even for the most experienced backwoodsman, this is a challenging landscape. remote and inaccessible, it's also rattlesnake country, he's out there barefoot, no boots. one of the rescuers is in intensive care because of a rattlesnake bite. four others treated for heat exposure and other injuries. the question is could he be

>> yeah. there are things that this diet definitely gets right. the idea of eliminating processed foods. those are empty calories, high in sugar and salt. that's not good. the idea of lots of and fruits and vegetables, great source of vitamins and fiber. cutting back on sugar and salt. those are really good. >> what doesn't work for you, then? >> there's a lot more protein than is currently recommended. and it eliminates so many foods that i traditionally think are really good. whole grains are a very good source of fiber. legumes, like peanuts and lentils. those are really good sources of protein, and those are cut out of this diet. it's hard to maintain. it takes a lot of work for the individual, and it's pretty expensive to go this route. >> what do you say to people who want to find a way to lose weight quickly? >> losing weight quickly, i'm not a big fan of. i think slow and steady is the way to go. instead of looking at our prehistoric ancestors, go back two generations and look at our grandparents. what did they do?
