. happening now, pride weekend has begun. more than a million people are expected to pack san francisco. >> it is the biggest celebration of its kind and it kicked off tonight. good evening, everyone. >> abc 7 news reporter is live in the castro district with more. hi, sergio. >> reporter: you can tell that thousands of people are starting to come in for the start of gay pride weekend. lots of members of the local lgbt community turned out in the tender loin to honor a special place named after a special person. the transgender parade began the kickoff of gay pride weekend. ed lee was the one sending off

the marchers. >> our city made sure we remember the lgbt. >> organizers expect more than a million people to circulate through. preparations for the biggest party on sunday have begun. this marks 45 years since the rights in new york have been accepted as the start of the gay rights movement. tonight another street riot. in the tender loin it is being commemorated. >> they set a police car on fire and burned the newsstand on the corner. >> at that riot at the corner. they fought back against police harassment and a portion of the street was named after her friend, vicki, a long time performer who passed away in 2011. >> i am overwhelmed and excited. i got to live this. a name on the street. my best friend and to see the

young kids with their mother. >> this is a big deal for the community that has not always been well-accepted. >> it's inspirational. in the pride marches, even the gay men were throwing fruit at the transwomen. >> this is the first street in san francisco named after a transgender person. >> this year's pride parade starts at 10:30 and runs along market to eighth street. more than a million people are expected to turn up, the largest celebration of its kind and the theme is color our world with pride. >> fireworks may be to blame for a fire that threatened homes in castro valley tonight. it started just before 6:30 on interstate 580. neighbors say they heard explosions and saw something being thrown from the freeway. fire officials say it was likely started by someone who tossed illegal fireworks into a back

yard. fortunately the fire was small and crews quickly put it out. legal fireworks haven't even gone on sale and that's what has a lot of east bay residents worried. alan wong is live where fireworks stands are preparing to open tomorrow. alan? >> this is one of the fireworks stands ready to begin selling tomorrow morning. there is a lot of concern over what could happen on july 4th. the alameda county fire department said there more fireworks related problems on the days leading up to the holiday and on the days after. these tnt fireworks stands will be open on saturday. in dublin and 9 n newark. five in tracy and 17 in union city. >> i will not be buying any firework this is year because i feel with the draught conditions it's a hazard and i don't know why towns are still allowing this to be done. >> there is a lot of concern in

bigger than thought. they seized 3500 pounds of fireworks that were being sold on craigslist. they are estimated to be worth $80,000. they arrested luis medina and ivan medina of oakland. fireworks will be dangerous this fourth of july because of the dry conditions we have. oakland's fire department is relieved the city's brown outs will end on july 1st. brown outs are when fire stations close to save money. oakland's fire chief said she is thankful because the department will need all the resource this is summer. >> a house fire in fairfield. a man was injury and still in the hospital. sky 7 shows the smoke and flame coming from the house after the roof collapsed. two other people were hurt. they are expected to be okay. >> in san jose, four families have to find a new place to live after fire destroyed their

apartment. they believe the fire started downstairs this afternoon and spread through the building near blossom hill road. nobody was home at the time. one firefighter suffered a minor injury and was checked out and allowed to return to work. >> muni and the drivers may be close to a contract deal weeks after a sickout in public transportation in san francisco. the union announced that negotiators and the metro transit authority have reached an agreement. a dispute over part of the contract that forces operators to pay pension led to a worker sickout. the agreement will be presented to union members monday. >> the father of a man who killed six people is talking publicly for the first time about his son. peter rogers shared his insight with barbara walters in an interview. his son elliott went on a violent rampage killing six and

injuring 13. he promised in a written manifesto a day of retribution. he didn't think his son could hurt a flea. >> how would you describe elliott? >> he was far from evil. something happened to him. i think he became mentally ill. what i don't get is we didn't see this coming at all. >> they were from the bay area. >> the state is taking steps to file more charges against for profit colleges. attorney general kamla harris ordered corinthian college to tell the students about the company's poor financial health. she owns shield, wio tech and recent ads are misleading and this afternoon the state department of veterans affairs has barred schools from accepting gi bill money. >> team usa does not wait until

. >> the pilot of a small plane made an emergency landing on a freeway median. the approach was captured by a man driving by. he saw the plane was having trouble and he took this video as the plane went by. the plane struck a pickup truck and the plane itself was hit by a different truck. one person was hurt when the wing went through a windshield. fortunately he had only minor injuries. >> worry the rise in home

burglaries, business is booming for security companies. >> no longer do they want just alarms, but sophisticated set ups to protect their homes and themselves. >> police couldn't be happier. here's vick lee with the story. >> there is a huge demand for cameras that produce high resolution images. this shows two burglars trying to break in. the clarity is amazing. here's another camera video. listen carefully. even has audio. you can hear the dog. watch the burglars go through the home. here's a camera outside a house. a car carrying two burglars pulls up and they break into the home. the burglars make several trips loading their car with the stolen merchandise. all of it captured on video. a blessing for police at a time when there scientisting shortages. >> the biggest change is the addition of surveillance in homes. we have only seen that

previously in businesses and stores. >> the bestseller in san carlos is a program called verified response, a program that also alerts police. the camera detects motion in the home. that triggers the recording, the images are set in realtime to the monitoring station where they look for anything suspicious. dispatchers call police. >> they come out faster. hopefully they can catch the person so it doesn't happen again. >> 245r depends on how quickly they get there. >> chances are most get away before police are able to respond. now there is a security company called the clarity systems trying to fill the gap. they have digital cameras at homes and businesses. the images are monitored 24-7. if there is unusual movement, the computer sends out a red flag. in this case the break in of a downtown office building. here's where a clarity system

said they differ from most of the other companies. >> when we see something suspicious, we dispatch the private police force driving around in the area. >> it's armed private patrols are checking on the properties. when they're dispatched to check out the location, the company said their response time is no more than five minutes, enough time to capture the burglar. >> we get them before or coming out with the property. >> earlier this month, one of the biggest serial bicycle teams in san francisco was caught by a clarity patrol officer. cameras in an apartment garage captured his image. he had stolen two bicycles which you can see in the corner of this video. he is trying to open the gate and monitors are watching every step. they dispatch a patrol car that appears in the video. the guards make a citizen's
