good tuesday morning to you. we begin with the severe weather unfolding on two fronts right now. >> the season's first tropical system on the east coast is threatening to disrupt fourth of july plans for millions. >> and overnight, a weather system rolled through the midwest, creating dangerous conditions. a light show overnight, lightning striking chicago's willis tower. torrential rains battering the city, while strong winds took down trees. more than 100,000 people were left without power. chicago o'hare airport shut down for hours. airlines, cancelling more than 250 flights monday night. >> they just canceled the second -- no, third flight. so, my son up there is not a happy camper. >> i was supposed to be home already. >> reporter: and tornadoes wracked across western missouri. in iowa, one person killed in a collapsed building in the town of fairfax. >> oh, look out.

oh, my god. >> reporter: watch here in cedar rapids, 80-mile-per-hour winds ripped the tarp over veterans memorial stadium. >> look out. oh, my god. it rolled right over that guy. >> reporter: injuring team staff in monday's minor league game. also in cedar rapids, another scary incident. two teens sucked into storm drains. one still missing and one narrowly escaped. the two boys were playing frisbee in the rain. and the search continued overnight. and we're about to meet the atlantic's first named storm of the year, off the east coast of florida. tropical depression has formed expected to become tropical storm arthur. it will pick up strength, pushing north towards the mid-atlantic states, bringing rip currents and a whole lot of rain. that severe weather is on the move this morning, with a new stretch of the country in its sights. >> accuweather meteorologist stef davis has the very latest. good morning, stef. >> thanks, reena and tahman. the threat for severe weather will continue to push east for our tuesday, into the ohio

valley and western pennsylvania. major cities to be impacted include pittsburgh, cincinnati and cleveland. major threats include blinding downpours, damaging wind gusts and hail. so, do be cautious for travel delays. and here, across the southeast, we're keeping an eye on our area of low pressure for development, that will bring rough surf and strong rip currents along the coast. reena and tahman, back to you. >> stef davis, thank you very much. turning overseas to rising tensions in the middle east. growing outrage this morning after three abducted teens were found dead. >> israel blew up the house of one of the suspected kidnappers. and the military launched a barrage of air strikes overnight, aimed at terror targets in gaza. abc's susan saulny has the latest. susan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, reena and tahman. in the wake of these abductions the israeli/palestinian conflict is at its most precarious point in nearly a decade. after israel's frantic 18-day

quest to find 3 missing teenagers, 1 of them holding dual israeli/american citizenship, the search ended in grief on monday. the bodies found buried with gunshot wounds in the west bank. >> it's terrible. and it's heartbreaking. >> reporter: israel's retaliation, swift against the militant palestinian group hamas. while hamas has not claimed responsibility for the killings, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said, quote, hamas is responsible, and hamas will pay. the israeli air force carried out strikes on more than 30 terror targets in the gaza strip. and there's signs that a significant escalation of israeli operations in gaza may be under way. >> we have very responsible and serious leadership in jerusalem. they will make the decisions they have to make to send a very strong message to hamas. >> reporter: the fbi has also joined the investigation into the abductions. >> because that individual was an american citizen, we opened an investigation when they were reported missing. so, we have an open matter. >> reporter: the teenagers' murders have sparked an

international uproar. in new york, a memorial march. >> the only comfort i have at this moment is to unify with people of shared values. >> reporter: the israeli-american among the abducted, naftali frenkel, had moved to israel from brooklyn with his family. he was 16 years old. reena and tahman? >> susan saulny, live in washington. thank you. the blitz by sunni insurgents in iraq is prompting more security precautions by the u.s. in baghdad. another 300 troops have been sent to provide additional security at the u.s. embassy and elsewhere in iraq. the state department says it's moving a small number of embassy staffers to u.s. consulates. the u.n. says more than 2,400 people were killed in iraq in june, the highest monthly toll this year. there is lots of new reaction this morning to the supreme court's decision on birth control. in a 5-4 vote, the justices ruled some companies are exempt from the requirement in the new health care law that they provide birth control coverage for women. religious groups are calling it

a major victory. but the white house says it creates health risks for women and that congress should take action to make sure they get coverage. president obama says he is going to side-step congress to fix as much of the immigration system he can on his own. the first executive action, a border surge, deploying all available agents to the southern frontier where thousands of women and children are crossing. mr. obama says he's given republican leader john boehner more than enough time to do something. >> beginning a new effort to fix as much of our immigration system as i can on my own, without congress. >> the president continues to ignore laws that he signed into law, violating his oath of office. >> secretary of state john kerry is in panama today to meet with central american leaders over the crisis. that's where many of the migrant women and children are coming from. oscar pistorius returns to a south african courtroom this morning a day after it was revealed that he was not mentally ill when he killed his girlfriend.

a 30-day assessment at a psychiatric hospital found pistorius was able to distinguish between right and wrong at the time of the shooting. if they had concluded that he was suffering a mental disorder, the trial could have ended abruptly. a number of suspects will reportedly be questioned in portugal today in connection with the disappearance of madeleine mccann. madeleine was just 3 years old when she vanished in 2007 vacationing with her parents. as many as eight suspects were identified by scotland yard. but portuguese officers are expected to do the questioning. and later this morning, the u.s. navy will have its first female four-star admiral. michelle howard will be getting that fourth star at a ceremony at arlington national cemetery. and with it, she will become vice chief of naval operations, the navy's number two officer. howard is a graduate of the naval academy and the first black woman to command a ship. coming up, hold the phone. new information this morning about how addictive our digital devices are. plus, high-tech hazard. a woman suffers serious burns.

there is more trouble this morning for general motors. gm has added 8 million vehicles to its list of cars recalled over faulty ignition switches, bringing the company's number of recalls in north america to 29 million this year. the latest recall led to a rare moment on wall street, with trading in gm stock halted. gm announcing it will pay a staggering $1.2 billion to cover the recalls. l'oreal has settled charges

of deceptive advertising for some of its anti-aging products. the cosmetics company agreed to stop making claims that the products provided anti-aging benefits by targeting users' genes. l'oreal had no science to back up that claim. and the low-budget airline, norwegian, is about to start flying its first transatlantic routes over the next few days. it will start flying between london and l.a. and new york and ft. lauderdale all for just about $255 each way. the move could cause a price war and might even prompt other budget carriers to take on those routes. it's about time. >> yes. and a new study shows just how important americans think their smartphone is. 47% say they wouldn't last 24 hours without their phones. yep. and a whopping 91% claim it's just as important as their car and deodorant. all signs of our digital times. and, reena, i have two

wouldn't work and wouldn't leave? >> yeah. >> she's speaking out for the first time. diane stretton tells l.a. radio station knx, she was the victim and the family made her work 24/7, without any breaks. after refusing to move out, she says she will leave by july fourth, as long as the media goes, as well. stretton left the family's home last thursday and has been seen hiding in her car. but she left her belongings behind and has the legal right to return. the family's lawyer says if she doesn't leave by next week, they plan to sue. a pennsylvania woman got a terrible scare when the battery in her computer exploded and went up in flames. loretta luff suffered burns on her face and arms when the lithium battery in her laptop caught fire. and she was rushed -- she got to her disabled husband and her dogs out of the smoky house. she stepped on a piece of the burning battery, too. >> caught my shirt on fire. i grabbed my shirt off. the rug was on fire and everything because it blew like five, six feet. >> lithium-ion batteries have caught fire in the past.

the one in luff's computer was a replacement and may not have been authorized. but the fire may have been caused by the power cord or a power surge, as well. it's an annual routine exam for millions of american women. but now, a major doctor's group says the pelvic exam may not be necessary. the american college of physicians says the exam has no known benefits for women who are not pregnant or have no symptoms and should be dropped from routine care. the doctors say not only is the exam unnecessary but it can cause harm in some cases. actor shia labeouf may be ready to get clean following his latest drunken escapade. just days after his arrest for disrupting the broadway show "cabaret," labeouf has reportedly checked into rehab in l.a. sources tell radar online, the actor was spotted with literature from alcoholics anonymous, not long before he reportedly decided to get help. robert downey jr. is showing support for his son after the 20-year-old was arrested for alleged cocaine possession.

indio downey remains out on bail this morning. his dad's rep suggested that indio may have inherited his father's addiction. he said, the family is rallying behind him and will see that he gets the help he needs. and here's a remarkable scene from china. it followed a policeman's wrong turn. check out where the van he was driving ended up, wedged between a wall and an adjacent building. the cop turned to avoid a car that was going the wrong way. if he had turned the other way, things would have been fine. the van was lifted to safety by crane. and no one was injured. now, to sports. france and germany advanced in the world cup yesterday. they will face each other friday in the quarterfinals. and there's some exciting news in baseball last night. highlights, now, from our friends at espn. >> good morning, america. and we mean it. this is the "sportscenter" set in los angeles. he's stan. i'm neil. we're each going to read a highlight. >> i'm going to start. athletics and tigers. what a finish to this ball game. bottom of the sixth. tigers down 1-0.

through the area the on the way to this location a crew was circling looking out for hotspots. last night, thick smoke poured in the air. firefighters from multiple answers were battling a wild land blaze yesterday that sent the smoke so high that it could be seen for miles. crews were battling two brushfires simultaneously citing dry conditions as a factor. one fire was at the los gatos golf course and the second threatened homes on curry drive seven miles away. beyond and lisa had front row seats headed up the hill to several multimillion dollar homes. >> i started hearing all of the helicopters and airplanes flying by and i saw a bunch of smoke billowing up.
