crews are desperate to keep it from homes. >> abc7 news reporter laura anthony joins us live. laura? >> well, hi, dan. we're on bucks canyon road when it started to jump the road we got out of there. let's show you what it looked like behind me. this is the direction of the fire. i'm in napa county. it's going north and east. that is toward those homes. crews have been at the mercy of the wind. firefighters hit it with helicopters. water drops from the sky. and tankers filled with fire retardant. the stubborn fire continued to grow, thanks in large part to winds. mother nature's and the cells.

the noise of the wind generated by the winds was deafening as firefighters moved in to try to keep the fire from jumping the road. >> the fire was sort of spreading out. it was kind of on two ends here, this way, this way. >> we're able to evacuate kids out earlier. >> debbie's horse ranch was evacuated. you can see fire line. there has to be 50 firemen working the line. and hoping to keep it from jumping the road as long as it doesn't, we'll be okay. >> the fire was contained, the fire fight just getting underway. those who live and work in the canyon could only stand by and watch. >> there are crews on the scene. they're there right away. it feels good knowing they're attacking it like that. yeah. >> david lives near where the fire started and tried to stop it along with neighborhood kids who grabbed garden hoses

>> the fire kept going that way and uphill. the kids did a great job here. and mostly stopped it from burning their house. >> the house is below flames they're showing you. this is a spot fire that just popped up. the rest of the side you can see is burned. this is the area cal fire just explained to me they're calling contained. it means it's already burned. as for the cause of the fire, still under investigation. in pope valley abc7 news. >> laura. thank you so much you can see winds on the ill side. crews are dealing now.

>> this is how we're picking up reflections of the smoke. to the area of the fire, what shows up is it's so thick and the plume, so large. these are the weather conditions. it's hot. humidity is low. 27%. winds are not very strong. we do have gusts now to 13 miles per hour. that is strong enough to cause a concern for fire to be high. it doesn't take very strong gusts to spread the fire. it could be worse if winds are stronger. >> it's sad. >> thank you. >> well, we mentioned at least five structures have burned. here is a look during the early stages of the fire showing what is left of the five buildings we don't believe they're homes,

but rather outbuildings, and camps. this is a live picture from our tower camera. it's 75 miles away well. have reports of smoke visible from clear lake. 50 miles north of that wildfire. >> now, evacuation point is pope valley school. this fire has continued to advance on the homes. it's forced evacuation of hundreds of people. there are a couple hundred homes in the area. that have had to be evacuated as a result of the fire. and again, it's gone from just about 800 acres to now well over 2500 acres and spreading because of change in the wind. >> we're told that the cal fire napa county and solano county, crews are fighting the fire. and watch it this afternoon just

got bigger and bigger now, at 2500 acres deputies going door to door, using bull horns now to evacuate residents. >> of course the evacuations will continue as flames continue to spread and it's at 30% containment at this point. we're covering this extensively for you and will have live updates during this our. and breaking news continues on twitter. >> we're going to go back to that story in just a moment. police in san jose are looking for a second suspect tonight in connection with a home invasion robbery of an elderly couple. an 85-year-old woman was sexual assaulted and police say the two teen-aged criminals stole the couple's suv, and ended up crashing into a house on sutter and singleton road. we're in san jose with more on this story. leanne?

>> you're right. very disturbing. police have one of the teens in custody he's a 15-year-old boy. they're looking for the second suspect described as a male hispanic between 18-25 years old he may be younger. police told he has a deep cut on his body, caused by that car accident. this suv crashed on single ton lane. people being chased for failing to stop the passenger is a 15-year-old boy, arrested but not the driver. this woman saw it all. >> i thought i was going to get shot. >> about 15 minutes later, it was discovered we had a home invasion. >> suspects had stolen the suv from the owners of the house

belonging to an elderly couple. >> two suspects entered armed with weapons they're forced to the back of the house. at some point, 85-year-old female was sexual assaulted. police confirmed they found a graffiti tag on the back of the house. but would not confirm if it was part of a gang initiation. a neighbor behind them told us she found two spray paint canisters in the backyard, supposedly tossed over the fence by the suspects. police took the canisters as evidence. neighbors are very fond of the couple. martha rosales says these people do what they please. >> it's unbelievable. >> reporter: she says the neighborhood changeed and she's finally moving. >> definitely.

>> the woman was hospitalized this morning and now returned to her home. her husband was not injured. in san jose, abc7 news. >> and the father of oscar grant lost his claim today for compensation in the death of his son. the jury found two did not have a deep connection. >> grant's family says the jury did not understand the type of relationship but the lawyer said the family only showed two letters of communications

between them. >> the jury made it clear that they did not think that that evidence came anywhere close to meeting the standard >> a two week long crack down on gangs put criminals in jail. law enforcement agencies took part in that operation. the 104 arrested nine wanted for murder. >> i spent two weeks focusing on the individuals. >> the u.s. marshals recovered nine firearms and a pound of black tar heroin. >> police are investigating a particularly disturbing shooting this evening.

one killed a popular youth counsel at a visitation valley playground where he worked with children. many of the children saw what happened. tonight abc7 news is talking with the victim's family. the flowers marked the spot where the 32-year-old allen calloway was guned down. police say the shooting was witnessed by dozens of small kids taking part in a summer program, including his 10-year-old son. calloway's was a father of three and a former gang member his new mantra, encouraging others to do the right thing. >> he felt like the past was behind him. >> and everything was the kids. we worked around here and cleaned up around here.

happening in a video first of a aired sunday night. in this video you can see a passenger hitting a female conductor in the head as the woman began, watch this, shoved her to the ground the woman was arrested for assault. tonight, cal train confirms the male conductor has been suspended during the investigation. the female conductor was allowed to return to work with no discipline yary action taken. >> 49ers star alden smith finds himself in less trouble now that it looks like he will not face charges for making a phony bomb threat. los angeles city attorney office says it will not prosecute smith over a dispute with tsa agents and police in april. a hearing will take place to talk about how he can avoid similar incidents in the future. the d.a.reserve the right to

to the latest on breaking news we've been following all afternoon. a fast-moving fire threatening hundreds of homes in napa county. a shift pushed names toward nearly 200 homes in a neighborhood in lake county that is in the line of fire now. there are mandatory evacuation areas for spots tonight the flames have charred 2500 acres and burned five buildings so far. our reporting continues right now on twitter and abc # news bay area. >> listen to this. a big crime spree in southern san mateo county. so many home burglaries there, sheriff's department is adding patrols.

abc7 news reporter nick lee has the story. >> the so called door knock burglaries they hit empty homes, look for unlocked windows and doors they'll pry them open if they can. in june there were ta home burglars under the jurisdiction of the sheriff's office. they include san carlos, and woodside and mostly in the southern part of the county. then, the last week of june, a shocking jump. 11 burglaries >> we're heightening our uniformed personnel in various areas. >> sheriff investigators want to know if there may be a nexus to highway 32. if coming from out of town and jumping into the quiet, tranquil
