>> klinsmann, recruit me. i'm available. oh, wait, you play with your feet, not your hands. making news in america this morning -- tracking arthur. the first named storm of the atlantic hurricane season gaining strength and bringing intense rains and strong winds to millions just in time for the holiday. dramatic standoff, buses full of illegal immigrants turned around by protesters. where the migrants are now. costly crash, a truck smashes into a low bridge, and its pricey cargo go is thrown all over the road. and tough loss. after a game filled with drama, team usa's run in brazil is over. their messages to fans overnight on twitter. good wednesday morning, everyone.

we begin with tropical storm arthur, gaining strength just days before summer's biggest holiday. >> the storm is churning off florida's atlantic coast, clearly visible from space. >> arthur is expected to become a hurricane. susan salny is tracking it. >> reporter: a major storm off the coast of florida, taking aim at the east coast. >> the surf is pretty, but looks a little dangerous. >> reporter: it's the first named storm of hurricane season, tropical storm arthur. gaining strength, churning up the atlantic, bringing heavy rain and dangerous rip currents. arthur is expected to graze the carolina's coast thursday morning as a category 1 hurricane. >> it is going to be a hurricane that is going to cause disruption. there's going to be wind, rain, and rough, rough seas. >> reporter: arthur, threatening many along the southern east coast with a soggy independence day. red flags already out at some beaches. the ominous forecast not topping

the fun yet. >> we have been in beach mode, not much paying attention to the weather. >> reporter: while the south braces for arthur, in the middle of the country, from arkansas to new york state, a severe weather watch in effect this morning. possibly bringing large hail and winds over 70 miles an hour. in the midwest, cleanup has begun from yesterday's extreme weather. including more than half a dozen reported tornados. >> two miles north. and it was a somber night in cedar rapids, as the body of a teenager swept into a storm drain was found. in indiana, 80 mile per hour winds brought a tree on this mobile home, killing a boy inside. >> pretty shocking. >> reporter: tropical storm arthur is moving north at 2 miles per hour and could become a hurricane as early as tonight. a slow and steady march, keeping millions on alert. susan salny, abc news, washington. >> thank you, susan. arthur's power on display. five teens in fort pierce,

florida, were rescued after they were caught in rough water caused by the storm. >> one was taken to the hospital with a broken collarbone. the other four were treated for cuts. one mother watched helplessly as the girls were pulled by the current toward a rock jetty unable to get away. >> i prayed they would get up on the rocks and that they -- their strength would kick and god would kick in and keep them safe and keep them on the rocks. >> i thought i was going to die. >> you were thinking that. >> yeah. >> what was it like? it was hard to cling on? >> i couldn't breathe. i was under the water. >> incredibly, a police officer dove into the water and brought each girl back to the waiting coast guard boat. and now where arthur is heading and who's going to be affected. >> for that, we turn to accuweather stef davis. >> thanks. tropical storm arthur is slowly strengthening off the coast of cape canaveral, florida.

it's guided by the jet stream, bringing showers along the coastal areas as it does. we expect arthur to be off the coast of south carolina thursday, and push north towards the outer banks thursday, and interest our independence day, friday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain along with it. the best bet for hurricane development is on thursday. back to you. >> all right, stef, thank you. scorching temperatures in northern california's wine country are making a tough job even tougher. crews on the ground and in the air are battling a wildfire that's grown to more than 2700 square miles in napa county. now fire officials are keeping residents out of 200 homes dangerously close to the fast-moving flames. >> you could see the fire line, and there has to be 50 firemen, at least, working the line, and hoping to keep it from jumping the road. as long as it doesn't jump the road, we'll be okay. >> five structures damaged, but no injuries reported. investigators are trying to figure out how it started.

an angry crowd in southern california forced three bus loads of illegal immigrants to be taken elsewhere. the protesters were upset that 136 migrants were flown to california from texas due to overcrowding at processing centers there. they were mainly women and children. many in the crowd blaming the president for the recent influx of children crossing the border. >> i don't think it's quite right for them to deposit them here, they should be in washington, d.c. on doorstep of obama. >> the buses eventually took the immigrants to another border patrol station near san diego. the three israeli teens found dead in the west bank have been laid to rest. tens of thousands of mourners at a funeral service yesterday. teens, one who was an american citizen, abducted two weeks ago while hitchhiking. prime minister benjamin netanyahu has vowed to get revenge on hamas. a political bomb shell in france. former president nicolas sarkozy has been arrested for corruption.

the severe storms in the upper midwest knocked down many trees, causing widespread damage to cars and homes. hundreds of thousands without power overnight because the trees pulled down lines. but before power can be restored, they have to remove the trees and the damage they caused. and morning road conditions. wet in florida thanks to tropical storm arthur. thunderstorms in the southwest, and wet up near the great lakes. and flying, airport delays possible in washington, philadelphia and new york. with millions of americans heading to the beach this fourth of july weekend, the para

him to safety. and a food truck exploded in philadelphia. the blast sent parts of the truck and a pro pain tank across the street, burning a passing car and starting a fire. police say it was a propane leak. crashes like this happen all the time, but not usually this expensive. a truck carrying 7,000 pounds of lobsters didn't make it under a railroad bridge. the driver made it out safely, but the cargo of lobsters valued at $100,000 has been destroyed. robin williams back in rehab, but not for what you might think. he's sober, he finished up back-to-back projects and wants to fine tune and focus on his commitment to sobriety. he sought, treatment in 2006 and struggled with drug abuse early in his career. it was a bizarre and

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. good morning, everyone, at 4:28. i am katie marzullo. i am eric thomas. we have a raging wildfire but, first, the weather conditions. here is leyla gulen. >> we are going to look outside the window, everyone. happy hump day, it is wednesday. we are waking up to cooler temperatures. it will be cooler-than-average until friday. we had higher-than-average temperatures early in the week and now it shifted. from the camera to the embarcadero we have more of a breeze. it will be foggy with spotty drizzle and mild to warm fourth of july but then we hit the triple digits sunday and monday.

the winds are going to talk about the fire in post valley and napa at three miles per hour, and further to the north gusts are higher than and i will have more information in a little bit but traffic shows we have construction projects with no accidents to get us going. we do have this major closing northbound 280 from we we to downtown starting tonight. be prepared. it will be shut down. that is until monday morning at 5:00 a.m. with possible opening earlier but try to avoid the area. eastbound 4 at g street lanes will be blocked until 5:00 this morning. the bay bridge toll plaza is wide open from emeryville. more on the raging wildfire that leyla gulen was telling you

about. several buildings have been destroyed in napa county and dozens of homes are evacuated and less than a third of the fire is contained. amy hollyfield is at a fire station with more in napa. >> they are still be working hard on the fire having worked all night. cal will work around the clock for a couple of days. necessity do not want to turn their back on it. right now they are putting the fire at 2,700 acres burned. it is 30 percent contained. five structures they say have been destroyed. there is a mandatory evacuation in place for 200 homes. some people say they find it comforting to see all of the firefighters here. >> there are crews on the scene and more are coming. it feels good knowing they are attacking it. >> this fire is
