>> you know what, i'm sure after last night's game, he deserved to go out and have a good time. he played an incredible game. >> he was the hero here. look at the saves, 16 in all yesterday. it's really just hard to imagine that the team could have made it this far without tim howard. he really was the star out there. >> superhero. >> i loved it, good morning, america. >> and he started coughing. we cut out. >> we can't wait to get to tim. we have a lot of news to get to. right off the top, the hurricane watch for parts of the east coast this morning. tropical storm arthur gaining strength as we come on the air. ginger, of course, tracking it all as she has the past 48 hours. >> and looking more like a tropical storm. you can see the rotation paralleling the east coast of florida. still in the atlantic, strengthening overnight to 60 mile per hour winds, max sustained, and moving north. so, it will not only move north. again, just gracing florida. but affecting mostly south carolina and north carolina. i think the outer banks get the first hurricane of our atlantic season.

but i really wanted to focus on the northeast. because people are asking, is it going to get us? i think you'll have rough surf into the weekend, but i do not think this is going to be, by any mean, a direct hit. this thing is moving. we're on hurricane watch right now as far as the outer banks goes. tropical storm watches, and even warnings out in the waters. especially for daytona beach today. that's where we find our matt gutman this monk. good morning. >> reporter: hey, ginger, good morning. just the past couple hours, since we've been here, really felt that wind and that surf pick up. it's up to about seven feet, and already over the past 24 hours, we have seen swimmers and paddle boarders get into trouble, get jammed up against the rocks because of the voracity of those waves. and it's not what you see above the surface, but beneath it. rip currents a major concern. children and even adults getting swept far out to sea with these conditions. and with millions of people out on these beaches the next couple of days, that's a major concern here. now back to david and amy. >> yes. everyone, heed those warnings.

we want to talk about the world cup and that heartbreaking loss by team usa. the americans coming so close to pulling off a stunning comeback. we were all believing, but they fell short in extra time against belgium. abc's bob woodruff is in sao paulo this morning with the very latest. bob, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, amy. yeah, this is quite a game. i have to say that. the team just landed here in sao paulo just after midnight. even though they lost this game, they just never surrendered. from the very beginning, the americans were physical, pressuring the opposition, struggling to score. >> dempsey again. >> reporter: and while the belgians just kept firing, tim howard refused to let them in. saving one shot after another after another. 16 saves. the most saves by a goalkeeper at the world cup in the last 50 years. >> mr. invincible. >> reporter: with so many close calls but no score, the tension was palpable.

i want to ask you, have you seen what is out there about you today? you are the new face of the quarter. you are mt. rushmore, appropriately named mt. howard. and you have been promoted to secretary of defense overnight per wikipedia. did you see any of this? >> i -- i only just woke up, as you can tell. i've not seen any of that. but that's quite funny. >> well, and it's well-earned. you made 16 saves against belgium. and that is the best by a keeper in a world match since 1966 when they started keeping world records. you were awarded man of the match. how do you feel about your performance yesterday? >> well, i've said it all along, that's what i signed up to do. stick my face in front of balls and get in the way. that's my job. i was able to do a lot of that last night. for me, unfortunately it wasn't enough, we nearly did it. i couldn't be prouder of this team.

and reena ninan has the store. >> reporter: from food truck to fireball, this jaw-dropping surveillance video capturing the moment a propane tank on a mexican food truck exploded. in the middle of a philadelphia neighborhood during the dinnertime rush. >> i heard the boom first, and the fire came out of nowhere. i have first degree burns on my whole left side. >> reporter: at least 12 injured. >> she was in shock. it looked like she was dead. >> reporter: trapped inside the inferno, a mother and daughter who worked in the truck, rushed to the hospital in critical condition. >> i was walking and i literally missed the step one foot to the another. it rocked me. >> reporter: as flames shot 200 feet in the air, two passing cars engulfed by flames. a utility pole on the other side of the street also catching fire. >> this lunch truck actually has two similar propane tanks in the back of the truck, one of them is still intact. >> the other propane tank ended up in a yard, 150 feet away from the truck. >> the whole house shook like an

earthquake. >> reporter: the police, the bomb squad and fire department are investigating if there was foul play. they want to make sure it's an accident. >> we'll talk to that mother and daughter inside that truck, thank you. and now to breaking news this morning. sweeping new changes to keep us safe in the sky. the government proposing new rules to expand security screenings of passengers designed to prevent a terror attack. pierre thomas has the story. >> reporter: abc news has learned the department of homeland security has developed a series of urgent directives that would require other countries to expand screening of passengers before airliners can fly to the united states. among the proposed security measures, increased random screenings of traveler, more intense scrutiny of electronics. expanded use of explosive detection machine, and adding to the list of clothing that may need to be removed during screening.

why the concern? radicals in war-torn syria are trying to develop non-metallic explosives to be smuggled on to commercial planes. the fear is that some in syria are from al qaeda's yemen branch, the innovative group responsible for the underwear bomb of christmas, 2009 many have arrived from europe and some from the u.s. radicals carrying passports from western countries, allowing easy access to the homeland. no final decision has been made but sources tell me homeland security is planning to move forward with some of these measures in the next two weeks. amy, david. >> important information as the summer travel season heats up. >> absolutely. let's get the rest of the morning from abc's ryan smith. ryan, good morning. >> good morning, guys. >> we begin with a fast-moving wildfire scorching the heart of california wine country. flames have already consumed four square miles of napa county. the fire is only 30% contained and threatening hundreds of homes. at least five structures have been damaged so far.

also breaking overnight, a fedex plane had to make an new jersey landing in nashville after reports of smoke in the cockpit. only the pilot and copilot were on board. they were not hurt. and new information about the government buses full of immigrants blocked from entering a processing center on tuesday by this group of angry protesters who say they were a safety threat. the buses turned back to san diego. but another bus is on the move carrying women and children from central america pouring across the border. this time, officers were seen blocking the entrance to the highway as the bus drove away. and a new record high on wall street this morning. the dow jones industrial average is flirting with 17,000. low interest rates forced investors to keep relying on stocks. but one solemn headline, jaime diamond of jpmorgan chase has been diagnosed with throat cancer. and doctors say it is curable.

dwell phone carrier t-mobile is facing a federal lawsuit. it's accused of adding hundreds of millions of bogus charges to customer's bills, the charges included 9.99 a month for so-called premium services like more scopes and celebrity gossip. t-mobile calls the allegations unfounded. and a political bombshell overseas, former french president nicolas sarkozy is rested for corruption, accused of accepting campaign funds from moammar gadhafi in 2011. you and you head of getting your hand stuck in a cookie jar but what about your head? in a scene straight out of winnie the pooh, this guy did just that. he was combing through some trash, he spotted crumbs and then making matters worse, he climbed up a tree and couldn't get down. look at him. there he is. the experts were called in and the jar was safely removed from his head. the 6-month-old cub will be just fine.

he's a little bit embarrassed, but he get over it. >> i hope he said it like that. i'm over it. >> i'm good. >> thanks, ryan. and now to the frightening moments on the court at wimbledon. a health scare for serena williams. she became dizzy and disoriented in the middle of a match. shocking spectators who watched in concern. >> something is not right with serena. >> reporter: the drama unfolding for 17-time grand slam winner, serena williams, when she was playing a doubles match with her sister, venus. the problem started before the match with williams receiving medical attention courtside after a shaky warm-up. once play got underway, williams still not her usual self. >> she can't even bounce the ball and catch it. i consider this dangerous. >> reporter: after losing the first three games, venus led her sister to her chair. >> she is not well. and i can't imagine they're going to let this match continue. >> reporter: officials eventually calling the match, and williams walking off the court. appearing to be in tears. tournament officials saying the

cause of serena's behavior, a viral illness. and williams later releasing a statement through her publicist. i'm heartbroken i'm not able to continue in the tournament, i thought i could rally this morning because i really wanted to compete, but this bug just got the best of me. we are so hoping serena is feeling better and back at full strength to defend her title at the u.s. open in august. david. >> that was tough to watch. we'll have much more in the next 24 hours. in the meantime, you've got an incredible story about that rescue on the highway. >> a driver pulled out of a burning car by a good samaritan who was at the right place at the right time. you won't believe how he managed to pull the driver to safety. the video is terrifying. a car burning on the side of a minnesota highway. now imagine actually being there. trapped in those flames. >> i knew i was in trouble. >> reporter: 51-year-old michael johannes was driving down the

road when his suv suddenly and inexplicably became engulfed. >> the power went out, the speedometer down to zero. >> reporter: and worse yet, his doors automatically locked. he was trapped. >> i decided to try to kick the passenger side out. >> reporter: but the window wouldn't break. the husband and father says he was preparing to die. >> i started thinking about my daughter, my wife. >> reporter: until a hero on the highway, 52-year-old bob renning, an air national guardsman driving by immediately pulls over and sprinted to help. what happened next is unbelievable. >> i didn't have anything to break the glass. i grabbed the top of the door frame and pulled until glass broke. >> reporter: renning, using superhuman strength, bent the piece of medal with his bare hands before pulling him to safety. we were there when the two men reunited. >> you came through here. i didn't do anything different than anyone else. >> reporter: but a different view of his roadside rescuer.

this morning. and one of the victims of this horrific parasailing accident is speaking out on camera for the first time. reunited with the people who saved her life. what she's saying one year after the incident. great to see she's coming back. and police trying solve the baffling murder mystery. a young mother killed while apparently out for a jog. it appeared to be a hit and run, but then it turned out to be something so much worse. >> reporter: wish i had more uplifting news. there is a task force to investigate this, the first homicide of the year in dalton township. police say they have lots of theories, but no leads in what caused this wife and mother to be killed while out for a run. this morning, the death of 36-year-old rebecca bletch was first thought to be a hit in run is now being investigated as a homicide. >> we thought she was hit by a

car until evidence pointed us in the other direction. >> reporter: she was found sunday evening along this quiet country road, less than a mile from her michigan home. they found multiple shell casings near her body, and upon further investigation, a small bullet wound. the wife and mother had been shot in the head. >> no scenario can make sense, can bring any kind of understanding to what transpired. >> reporter: police say her last contact with a family member was around 5:00 p.m. a little over an hour later, the couple who discovered her body called 911. the physical therapist found along the same path she regularly jogged. >> the way she was dressed, she was out getting some exercise. >> reporter: police say she was found with several valuables, making robbery an unlikely motive. her husband and 11-year-old daughter were out of town. investigators say her husband is not a suspect. while his family told us he was

too distraught to speak, his uncle described her as a vibrant woman who's death is as devastating as it is baffling. >> she was always willing to pitch in and help, always seemed to be concerned about other folks. beki wasn't just a person running down the road. she had a life. >> reporter: police are hopeful there are clues in the autopsy results. we're talking about a time with very little crime. the sheriff's office handled only three homicides in all of last year, david. this one mysterious. >> rattling the town. thank you. and dan abrams, this is a tough one. you heard the report, the husband is not a suspect right now. is that where they begin, with the peoplest to her? >> absolutely. what a mystery. first they think it's hit and run, then they realize she's been shot. the first place you start is with the people that she knows the best. the husband was out of town with the daughter. doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't have been involved. they want to look into him, exclude him as a possibility,

then look to other people that she knew well. people with a motive. the idea this would be a completely random crime, that someone is out jogging and someone gets shot and left with all their valuables is going to be improbable to the authorities. doesn't mean it's impossible, but it means it will be improbably. they'll go into it thinking that way. want to exclude those she knows best first. >> that's key, they found the valuables. the 5:00 p.m. phone call, going over the phone records? >> oh, that's going to be crucial. who were the last people she talked to? what was she texting about? who was she e-mailing. and they want to go back beyond the most recent ones. they want to see, was there any conflict. was there anyone there who would have had a motive to do this. how could this have happened? they want to piece together the story of her life now. the way to do that is by looking back at her computer records and, of course, her phone. >> dan, great to have you with us. and now to a texas cheerleader stirring up a

firestorm over her facebook photos that some may find disturbing. the 19-year-old posing with the bodies of rare animals she's hunted in africa. the pictures sparking outrage. this morning, she's speaking out in her defense. abc's ryan owens has the story. >> reporter: she's the texas cheerleader with a bow in her hair, and a much bigger one in her hand. 19-year-old kendall jones, a cheerleader for texas tech, turning her facebook page into a tribute to her other favorite activity, hunting. and we're not talking ducks and deer. here she is posing with a lion, smiling with a cheetah, a menagerie of endangered species she says she hunted in africa. the cheerleader's facebook page doesn't exactly have animal rights activists picking up pom-poms. some posters have called her

despicable and the top-hated person. >> i'm kendall jones. >> reporter: when she was featured as a scholar of the week on our dallas affiliate, wfaa, she talked about her love of animals. >> so, do you have any dogs? >> yes, i have two of my own. >> reporter: and now she's firing back at her critics, pointing out the money she pays for these big game hunts helps prevent poaching. she writes, this is a conservation effort to ensure they never become extinct. >> in a modern day and age, killing an endangered species to save it, unacceptable. >> an online petition to facebook of kendall jones because of animal cruelty has more than 60,000 signatures. jones would not comment, but this may not be a bad thing. on a facebook page, she will be hosting her own reality show on the sportsman channel next year. the network, which airs hunting shows hosted by sarah palin and and model brittany glaze, would not confirm if the texas

we're back now at 7:42 with one of the survivors of the horrifying parasailing accident. she's speaking out on camera exclusively now to abc news. she is one of two teen girls critically injured. and a year later, the government issued a report calling for tough new regulations on the parasailing industry. matt gutman has the story. >> reporter: sydney heard it snap. >> it was really bad, the feeling of the wind. and we broke away. >> reporter: in video that went viral last year, dozens on the beach watched as the 17-year-old and her friend floated up and then slammed into a condominium building. >> i remember flying into the building. >> reporter: this morning, speaking to us for the first time on camera. >> i felt the people's arms grab me.

good morning. i'm eric thomas. leyla gulen has a look at the bay area forecast. we've been tracking the heat, eric, in the north bay especially for the pope valley fire, 91 degrees in clear lake, still hot there, also the wind. it will kick up later on tonight but it will be calm for the afternoon. highs for the afternoon elsewhere in the upper 80s inland areas and 60s around the coast. as we take a look at those lows, the fog comes back in overnight and in my accuweather seven-day forecast shows a dry 4th of july on tap. and we do have a problem on b.a.r.t. that is currently recovering. we did have a 30-minute delay. it looks like that is now in the recovery process, but we have this closure northbound side of 280 from 101 to downtown
