dublin where fireworks are legal but some communities don't have them legal. tiffany? >> reporter: that's right, a lot of communities don't allow people to set off fireworks, but here in dublin they're inviting folks to come over. here behind me we're in one of four city parks. dublin says come on over and set off your fireworks safely. it's a soundtrack of the fourth of july, but some neighborhoods are in silence. livermore outlaws fireworks. dublin is the exception. >> we have to go here and go to this county and set them off. >> reporter: they said even though they're not legal where they live, they'll set them off at home. >> i didn't buy anything super radical. hopefully i'm not going to get in trouble. >> reporter: her grandson peyton plans on lighting his first sparkler today.

fireworks is, of course, fire. with our dry conditions, that can set off a fire, and that's the biggest worry for san jose firefighters right now. santa cruz firefighters are also on alert. >> we bring in additional staffing from extra fire units. we also have a bulldozer in that staff today. we correlate and feel like we've taken appropriate measures. >> calfire alone has responded to 2700 fires throughout the state this year, about 900 more than average. that includes the pope valley fire in napa valley this week. it has scorched 400 acres and destroyed two homes. it's 55% contained, but 75% firefighters remain on scene. the punishment for violations such as using illegal fireworks, littering and public drinking will be tripled. the minimum fines will be $532

after court costs. hundreds of thousands are expected along san francisco's waterfront tonight for a spectacular show. >> we're live at pier 39 with a lot of excited people. >> reporter: yeah, a lot of excited people, and by a lot, we're talking thousands and thousands. let's show you right now pier 39. there are a lot of people here, and a little bit over here, this band is starting to set up. later on you can see there is more on pier 39. let's show you video we shot a little earlier. there was a little bit of a crowd there, but pier 39 was the place to be to take in san francisco's most famous sites including the golden gate bridge, the bay bridge, alcatraz and to jump on the carousel. em bargabarcadero is packed, soc transportation is probably the best way to get around on the grou

ground, or you can enjoy a nice walk from one end of the embarcadero to the other. taking the ferry is also an option. it gives you a little different perspective. we can expect that more and more people are going to start to make their way here to the embarcadero because those fireworks are going to go off around 9:30. there is a pretty good perspective to cast them at the end of pier 39. we have, however, begun watching the fog roll in, so we'll see how that affects tonight's show. >> sergio, thank you very much. what are your chances of seeing the fireworks through the fog tonight? >> we're live in mountain view for your first forecast. i'm guessing a sound check. >> reporter: you're right. i'm competing with the music right now. big sound check for the program here tonight which is san francisco's symphony fourth of july spectacular. the music you hear here will be

spectacular. let's talk about that fog. let's get right down to it. we're looking live at doppler 7 hd with satellite imagery imposed. you can see a patch of fog on the coast. you can see san francisco fog from the golden gate to pacifica and we're concerned how far that fog will reach. let me give you a live view from the east bay hills. you can see the fog there on the coastline, fog over parts of san francisco moving toward the bay. the question is will it reach the bay before the fireworks begin? well, here's our fireworks forecast. low clouds over the san francisco waterfront, and some of the fireworks may be obscured if those clouds continue to hang as low as they are, 6 to 800

feet. temperatures will be generally in the 50s and 60s. i can be more specific at getting i temperature readings at that hour. 60 to 65 most everywhere. the inland locations of fireworks tonight will be just fine but it will be a little iffy over the san francisco bay and the north bay. i'll have the complete forecast later. eric and ama? >> thank you very much. there has been an arrest in the shooting of 11-year-old gregory kent in antioch yesterday. a 14-year-old boy has been charn charged with assault of a deadly weapon and discharge of a firearm. gregory is in stable condition and doctors do expect him to recover after a friend shot him. it happened around 11:00 yesterday morning at an apartment complex at i and west 8th street. the oakland a's are back

with a new lease, but oakland city council is calling foul. >> they approved a new 10-year lease, but some at city hall said they can and should do better. >> reporter laura anthony is live at odotco. laura? >> reporter: hi. the a's are locked in a 0-0 battle with the bluejays in the ninth inning. it's not unlike the deadlock between the a's and the city of oakland over that lease extension. it continues despite repeated claims that the deal is done. >> we saw where the loyalties were for the oakland council. >> reporter: out for a little holiday fun at the odot coliseum, a's fans found very little to cheer about in their efforts to secure a new lease. >> we're tired of walls and the city of oakland. we need to do something new. >> as a fan, you feel like

you're sort of in the middle. they're our a's. we want them here. >> i feel i'm making a decision in the best interests of the residents of alameda county and the residents of this city. >> reporter: the reaction one day after they voted 6-2 to continue a 10-year extension for the a's. it allows the a's to stay until at least 2017. but the council president sent this out: we are happy we made a deal for the next few years. we are centered around economic and legal concerns. chris dobbins is on the jpa board and is one of the six yes votes. >> i'm concerned. i remember basically when the city told the oakland a's they couldn't do anything. >> today's owner lou wolf will

now follow through on his e-mail threat backed up by major league baseball to move the team immediately if the lease deal falls apart. in oakland, laura anthony, abc news. some neighbors in an apartment building can only shake their head and snap pictures as a man wearing only a g-string and a smile ran through their buildings setting off fire extinguishers. police said the man was high and decided to strip and run through the halls, setting off every fire extinguisher he could find. when police finally got him cuffed, he was so angry they had to put a spit hood over him before taking him to the hospital. just as you're firing up the fourth of july outbreak, there is a dangerous salmonella outbreak. over the past six months, over 500 people have been sickened by a strain of salmonella resistant to antibiotics.

sky watch hd is live over that breaking news in solano county where a fire has burned at least four homes in collinsville which is north of antioch just across the water. you can see all that smoke coming up and you see the line of fire right there. it broke out around 1:30 this afternoon on collinsville road, and we do have some video of some of the homes that were damaged. that's what we're seeing here. we will bring you any developments as they become available. you can always follow us on twitter for the latest at abc7

bay news area. a helicopter team in washington state saved a hiker that was trapped 500 feet up the mountain. he called 911 worried that he wouldn't be able to hold on much longer. he was clinging to a cliff above mowaqua lake. the rescuers strapped in the hiker and the chopper carried him off. he was not hurt. authorities have not said how he got there. a new type of farmer's market opened in l.a. today. instead of fresh produce, farmers are selling fresh c cannabis. they are set up in a 6500-square-foot warehouse. they say they are able to save money by not having to pay dispensery markups. they have to show medical i.d. to get in. >> same thing with a regular market where you can discuss the

product where people are cultivating them. >> brownies, cookies, pretzels. soft pretzels are the best and everything is organic. >> the market is open until sunday and if it is a hit, organizers will open every weekend. one world war ii veteran reflected on the sacrifices made 70 years ago in the south pacific. he served in pearl harbor to the end of world war ii. he saw action in 17 major battles. san francisco encountered a fierce fight while they tried to capture saipan in 1934. >> then they wanted big guns and they could lob projectiles on the island and kind of soften things up a little bit. little by little, the marines began to take over. >> the battle began in mid-june

and was not over until july 9. 3,000 americans died overtaking the island. nearly 300 japanese tourists also perished, giving the usa a place to launch direct bombing missions for the first time over world war ii. the bay area celebrated independence day in a big day today. festivities were held in many cities, including the fourth of july parade in danville. about 40,000 people take part in it each year. there he is, so to speak. the parade was organized by the kiwanis club. san jose saw a little bit of a revival. the rose, blue and white parade took its cues from the rose carp valuable. you can see people dressed up in period costumes complete with

shoreline amphitheater for a night of music and fireworks. hi, spencer. >> get fireworks here. it's the san francisco symphony fireworks spectacular, and you'll recognize some of the music from some of your favorite disney movies. but right now let's take a look at what's going on with live doppler 7hd. we have an area blocked on the coast. let's take a live shot from our golden gate bridge camera and let's see if we can stare down that fog and keep it from moving over the bay. we'll see fog along the coast and over the bay tonight. warming begins tomorrow, serious warming. we'll have high temperatures near 100 degrees inland by monday, so we have a couple days

of serious heat coming our way. satellite image shows areas of fog off the coast. a steady sea breeze is carrying the fog near the coastline and will probably push some of it out over san francisco and over the bay during the evening hours. forecast animation will start at 7:45 this evening. we'll see fog over the coast and the north bay, and that's pretty much the picture we're going to have not pushing completely inland. it will be mainly clear in our inland areas overnight. hot air is expanding westward. we'll see that big mass of hot air that we've been showing you the last couple days over the southwestern part of the u.s., expanding westward out over the bay area and most of california. but it's going to bring us that heat wave i told you about for a couple days. i don't know whether that qualifies for a heat wave or not, more like a heat-up. temperatures will be mainly in the 50s which we've been having

all week long, so let's take a look at our highs for tomorrow as we skip around the bay. we'll start with the south bay where high temperatures will range basically from 83 to about 94, the hottest spot being in gilroy. we'll see 60 on the coast at pacifica to 85 at loss about 60 in daly city. 60 on the coast to 97 far inland at clear lake. over on the east bay tomorrow, look for highs ranging from 70 to 78, 78 in fremont. and the eastern inlet will range from a high of 88 to 90. on sunday, inland highs up near

. sky 7 hd right now shows you that breaking news live. there are two different brush fires burning close to each other in the delta area. one of them has destroyed at least four homes in solano county. >> video shows huge flames burning the land just north of the sacramento river. we're told there are gusty winds in this area. the destroyed homes were in a small neighborhood of collinsville. >> we're going to take you back live again from sky 7 hd. we can show you both the homes that were destroyed and the structures there that appear to have been spared by the flames. it's always strange that way. fire will go one way and not go the other. a big black mark there where vegetation has been burned away, but it looks as though firefighters are getting a handle on this. we see a lot of white smoke and not so many flames. of course, we'll continue our coverage of this brush fire and give you more information as it becomes available.

>> we do have a crew on the way. this is a holiday where police expect illegal fireworks sales to heat up in chinatown. >> supposedly business on the street is slow. rick lee is live in san francisco's chinatown to tell us why. nick? >> reporter: well, first of all, there are plenty of buyers. they come from all over, they're all ages. as for the sellers, in the past the streets of chinatown used to be crawling with them, but now the cops and the internet are taking a toll on them. the runners, the street sellers normally set off small fireworks on the streets to let people know they're selling the big stuff. the runners are usually neighborhood teens trying to make extra money on this holiday week. in the past chinatown streets were filled with sellers, but not now. these last two july 4th holidays, it's been hard finding them. this man told us he spent all morning trying to find one. we left him still looking.

this person who did not want his name used said he, too, was having trouble. >> couldn't find anything. everyone seems to be really nervous right now. four months ago if i walked in the door and said firecracker, they would pull things off the shelves. now you walk in and they're like, no, no. >> reporter: but he bought a small box of firecrackers for $40. yesterday they arrested these people who sold 22 m-1000 fireworks. they are explosives. >> you can blow an arm off. it's very dangerous. >> reporter: police tell us that internet sites like craigslist are running into street business. you can find all kind of fireworks here. just last week, police raided a home in pittsburg and

confiscated fireworks. this store sells souvenirs. the fireworks are hidden under the cash register. when we were here, there was a steady stream of customers. it seemed to be an open secret. vick lee, abc 7 news. hurricane arthur has moved offshore and away from north carolina's outer banks after a night of strong winds and heavy rain. the storm is moving northeast and could dampen some holiday plans along the east coast. abc news reporter scott goldberg has more in seaside heights, new jersey. >> reporter: the fourth of july began with the look and feel of the beach holiday so many wanted but didn't expect. because the night before, hurricane arthur nailed the outer banks with the full force of a category 2 storm, the wind blowing 100 miles an hour. >> the beach can calm down so we can come back and enjoy the rest of the vacation. >> reporter: by morning the weakening storm had turned away from the coast, leaving behind

choppy waves and flooding described as severe in some small towns, but relatively few people lost power and there were only a few reports of significant damage. >> this has been actually a very good day. >> reporter: north carolina's governor who had warned beach goers not to put on their stupid hats as the day approached began his day wearing a smile. >> i put on my beach shirt because i'm about to go down to southport and participate in their wonderful fourth of july parade. >> with roads reopening and hurricane warnings lifting in the mid-atlantic, cape hatteras was in line to be the hurricane's next target. but the journey so far proving to be more of a disruption than a disaster. >> we're all safe and it was fun and a new experience. >> reporter: there is still concern about dangerous rip currents up and down the east coast, and there is also the major bummer. seaside heights, new jersey.

>> flooding will be here by tomorrow morning. clearly this wind is bad. i'm going to get out of this. >> that's abc news reporter matt guthman at the height of the storm last night. he was nearly blown away while doing his report for "nightline." police had co control immigrators today. earlier last week anti-government protesters blocked buses of women and children coming in from mexico. they don't want the station in marietta used for processing immigrants. at the white house, more than two dozen members of the armed forces were sworn in as u.s. citizens today.

1957 caddy de ville into a mobile hot tub. it took six years to build. it features a hot tub filled with water. it has heating controls and full plumbing. the guys want to test it at the bonneville car show next month. they want to propel it into a speeding hot tub up to 100 miles an hour. they want to use a kick starter to get the car there. >> i think you could probably push the car. >> how many other competitors are out there? >> now there's going to be competitors out there. hot tub on wheels. well, 4th of july preparations began very early for people looking to get a good spot for a picnic. >> we ran into several people setting up chairs and even firing up the grill way before 9:00 this morning. some people at san francisco golden gate park said they got there before 6:30 to pick a

spot, even though most people didn't show up until noon. >> we were just here early enough with our reservation. >> of course, getting there early means you have to do a lot of prep work for the barbecue. that includes setting up the volleyball net and cleaning up the grill. >> let's check in with spencer christian live at shoreline and mountain view. spencer? >> reporter: this is the san francisco symphony fireworks fourth of july. they will be playing some spectacular music but there will be fireworks as well. i don't know the last time i saw fireworks and the symphony at the same time. maybe this will be a first. we have amazing skies generally across the bay area, but there is an area of fog along part of the coastline and up to the golden gate, and patches of it are beginning to push out over

the bay, and there is concern about how the fog may affect the fireworks display over san francisco. here in mountain view, we're not concerned about fog at all. let me give you the event planner for the symphony event. it will be breezy and nice and mild about 8:00. temperatures dropping to about 61 degrees by 10:00 p.m. let's take a look at the national weather picture tomorrow. we can expect pretty calm, quiet weather. lots of sunny spots. there is hurricane arthur which is just off the mid-atlantic coastline right now and beginning to pull away from land areas and that's good news. it looks like its effects on the mid-atlantic will be minimal tomorrow. numerous locations in the central valley will have temperatures at or above 100 degrees, and in palm springs it will be well above 100. here in the bay area tomorrow,

trapping 11 workers. rescue crews are digging with picks and shovels because the ground is too unstable for heavy equipment. more than 300 red cross volunteers, firefighters and people who live near the mine are taking part in the rescue effort. the remaining miners are still trapped about 90 yards into the mine. a sick boy from southern california is using his skills with legos to help raise money for others like him around the world. eight-year-old dylan prunty has a rare form of mile o he asked the workers to give him a design of the hospital. the workers are in awe of his talent, especially considering the severity of his disease. >> usually it takes three months to a year for someone to develop a kidney stone. dylan makes them in hours or

days. he can pass up to 100 kidney stones a day. >> dylan hopes people will be moved by his lego display and donate to help people with mi myelochondrial disorder. brazil won the match today but lost their top player. he is out of the world cup with a broken vertebra. during the match, it didn't take long for the brazilian fans to jump up with pure joy because brazil scored in the seventh minute of the game against columbia. the brazilian restaurant kept on celebrating. they scored again and held on for a 2-1 victory. >> soccer fans scored on their team in schroder, san francisco

on on to be inspired. abc news 7 at 5:00 begins right now. breaking news from the delta. a raging fourth of july fire destroys rural homes in solano county. learn how firefighters are getting ready for a busy night ahead. we're in the aphitheater where we have no concerns, but there are concerns for fireworks over the bay tonight. i'll have more in just a minute. and we're monitoring that breaking news near the sacramento river delta. an out of control fire has destroyed several homes in a rural solano county. damage is extensive. good evening again. i'm eric tomasson.

>> there is a fire right near the sacramento river delta. >> alan joins us for the very latest. alan? >> reporter: eric and ama, we're in south collinsville. this is an area called birds landing, and you can see the smoke dripping away from several homes down there. they have that under control right now, but we've lost at least four homes out here. let's go to the video where i can show you earlier the fight that took place and what's left of it. we believe possibly seven homes burned out here which started around 1:30 this afternoon. the current fire line right now is about half a mile away, and that is piping some pretty black smoke that i'm looking at right now. we're told that that fire started from the embers that blew from this fire that burned these homes, and the wind is blowing pretty low out here

right now. it has not died down so they're still trying to get control of that second fire. we've seen air drops coming in here from a helicopter. calfire is assisting the mont z ezuma fire district, but it's hard to get out here because there aren't many roads that go into this rural area. i would like to bring in stephanie tackett who is a fire victim. stephanie, i understand you lost your home. >> yes, i did. >> reporter: did you have a chance to even fight the fire? >> we had a chance to fight the fire. my daughter and husband were arguing just like teenagers do with their dads. he went out the door and started hollering. he has to have neck surgery done on his neck. he started hollering and we thought he fell. we didn't know there was a fire going on. he said, i smell smoke, i smoel smoke, something is burning.
