>> good morning, everyone. i'm katie marzullo. glad you are with us on this saturday, the 5th of july. we will start you off with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, pleasa. >> good morning, katie." we have a lot of coast and bay clouds this morning so the marine layer over 1200 feet and the view from the exploratorium showing the clouds. the building pretty much obscured from the low cloud deck. 57 in san carlos and 50 around gilroy. the temperatures are cool. the low clouds and fog. they will last until midmorning and by about 9:00, 10:00, they clear back to the coast. the forecast for the rest of the day today calls for the low clouds and fog here, at the

coast. we look for numbers to be cool from pacifica and half moon bay and 57 around san francisco. around the bay warming to the mid-70s in oakland. warmer for you. inland here's where we get more warmth, upper 80s to the lower 90s. >> lease you, thank you. crews of work to put out a wildfire that started around 9:30 the southwest shore of lake and 128. 20 fire engines and six crews were called to fight the fire. 30 homes are under mandatory evacuation. no word yet on what started the fire. developing overnight. fire crews in hayward has contained a grass fire that broke out in the hills near east bay. they don't know what spark the flames that broke out just before midnight. the flames were throw moving so

the crews were able to extinguish it in about 15 minutes. no injuries reported. new this morning, investigators are looking for the cause after fire that displaced eight people in brentwood. it started around 11:40 last night on sycamore each near a senior housing complex. flames spread to the building consuming two apartments. another two units were damaged by smoke. it took them 45 minutes to get the fire under control. back to solano county for another wildfire. flames tore through a neighborhood destroying homes. the fire burned in the small community of collinsville just across the san joaquin river from pittsburgh. >> reporter: the tackett family walked down the street of what used to be their community in collinsville. a wind whipped fire took eight

homes t started around 1:30. >> we were grabbing fire extinguishers and water hoses as fast as the fire would spread, and it just started going to my house. and this is what is left of the tacketts three-bedroom, one bath home that they were renting. it they say it started about 20 yards behind the house. >> it was windy. it was real windy. i come around the side of the house and seen the fire and i hollered fire, fire. >> the winds of more than 20 miles an hour picked up embers and ignited another fire a half-mile away. >> that's the eighth home that's been destroyed. and if you can see it, the fire trucks are there right now putting it out. >> the red cross is housing the tacketts and their neighbors while investigators try to figure out the cause. quick destruction with a combination of extremely hot conditions and high winds took firefighters 20 minutes to reach in the remote area.

abc7 news. the wildfire burning in napa county is now 65% contained. it's burned 4300 acres since breaking out on tuesday. flames have destroyed two homes and seven other structures. three people have been hurt. evacuations have been cancelled. one man in oakland died and another injured after they were elect -- electrocuted. >> we had a report of people being injured. heard gunshots and fireworks. we found two gentlemen down on the sidewalk in the street. it appears they were electrocute ed by a downed wire. it could have been gunfire, it could have been fireworks, which is investigating. >> the fallen power line also started a grass fire. the incident is under investigation. two men were seriously

injured by fireworks in sunnyvale. it happened just before 10:00 yesterday evening. one of the men lost several fingers. no word on either of their conditions this morning. [explosions] >> check this out. kind of looks like a professional fireworks display, but it's not. a viewer captured these illegal fireworks being set off last night in oakland san antonio neighborhood near 14th avenue and not too far away, the beef, who beefed-up patrols in an effort to crack down on the use of illegal fireworks. >> injuries is always a concern with fireworks, especially the illegal time. here's a picture of the san jose camera catching illegal fireworks being launched over the city last night. colonel bernard has details on the law enforcement crack down from san leandro.

>> the neighborhood homemade fireworks show seemed to be everywhere. this one sent to us from a viewer. this family said the fourth can be a scary time. >> we had dinner and somebody near our home was letting off some real loud ones. it's hard to distinguish it between a gunshot and an actual firecracker. >> we road along with the police ltd. as he looked for violators. >> loot of them are very powerful and can cause anywhere from minor to extremely serious injuries. >> back at the station the officer confiscated this arsenal of fireworks from one homeowner who didn't realize it was all illegal. >> so you put these containers in there. it's like the military uses, it's called mortors. >> one wrong move and it could turn tragic. >> if they are holding them and the wings burn faster, this can explode in their hand and they

can lose their entire hand. >> abc7 news. >> the selling of illegal fireworks usually heats up in san francisco's chinatown around the fourth of july but sales appear to be down the past few years. some dealers might fear extra heat from police officers after they arrested three men suspected the selling powerful m-1,000. and the other reason people seem to be turning to places like craigslist to buy fireworks. last night thousands crowded into fishermen's wharf in san francisco to catch the professional fireworks, even though the fog was there. we report on the festivities, despite the fog. >> for this fireworks spectacular, the biggest worry was the fog. >> yeah, the fog. but everyone doesn't mind as long as the fireworks go on. >> i like that because you can

see the colors. i like the regular look. >> thousands of people flocked to the waterfront. many brought their families from across the bay area. >> our first year here. the girls are finally old enough to watch too, with the big crowd. >> my sisters are wandering around somewhere and one of my really good friends and her son. >> this is the celebration of the stars and stripes and the birth of our nation 238 years ago. for most of the afternoon people packed the water grant. at pier 39 an 80s rock band helped entertain the big crowd. for a lot of people this yearly event is a chance to venture into the city to join the company of thousands of people. the show is often a crowd speaker but at least one spectator was not a fan of the explosion necessary the sky. >> do you like the fireworks? >> no. >> i guess you can't please everyone. >> abc7 news. well, sometimes the noise is a little overwhelming. they looked nice.

>> even with the fog. we are starting out with more low clouds and fog. it's clear in concord and livermore now but near the east bay and emeryville. cloudy skies, upper 50s. we will see a little bit of warming today. perhaps not here. it will be a little further inland. i'll tell you where, how much and or how long when they return. >> thank you, lisa. and the argument over immigration is heating up. the protests are getting out of hand. the town that's now the center of national debate. and our local hot dog eating champ, reaches a new milestone in life. maybe not in his work.

>> welcome back and good morning. we are coming up at 5:12 on your saturday morning here's from the roof cam and the beautiful bay bridge and the lights. only thing lighting up the sky at the hour. fireworks shows are definitely over but i can report i heard at least one in san francisco while getting ready for work. so one stray fireworks and there were several last night. hopefully everyone is safe and sound in bed and looking forward to the rest of their hollywood weekend. we have new details about a home invasion and sexual assault in san jose. police have arrested a second suspect in the attack which happened on tuesday. boy, arrested yesterday, is 16 years old. police arrested his 15-year-old accomplice tuesday. detectives say either one or both of the boys sexually assaulted an 85-year-old woman after breaking into her and her husband's home. two then stole the couple's s.u.v. one teen was caught after

crashing the s.u.v. into a garage a few blocks away. a vigil was held last night in san jose for a palestinian teenager who was kidnapped and killed. the burned body was found outside of jerusalem. his family believes his killing was in etaliation for the death of three israeli teens. here's the scene. you see dozens showed up to remember the boy who had family in the south bay. yesterday his body was released by israeli authorities and carried through the streets. thousands of palestinians gathered to celebrate the boy, who they now call a martyr. new details and investigation into the murders of five women on the peninsula that happened nearly 40 years ago. gypsy hill killings happened in san mateo county in 1976. the fbi reopened the case after new evidence emerged link ago university of nevada reno nursing student to the crime. one person is suspected in all of the killings.

investigator revealed yesterday they are looking to a possible witness to the murders, a white male in his 20s or 30s who was in san mateo county between january of 1976 and april of the same year. he was driving a car with nevada plates. new details about a deal between for-profit it involves three colleges and has more than 70,000 students nationwide. company has struggled since a ruling delayed federal student aid money. the government is investigating claims they lied about placement numbers and programs they said they offer and did not. >> there is argument on both sides of the immigration debate. they are waiting for more buses carrying undocumented immigrants to arrive. there have been several arrests

in marietta. >> they are shouting and chanting. [chanting] >> there was passion on both sides in marietta. a place that's now at the center of this nation's debate over illegal immigration. >> what do you hope happens out of all of this? >> i hope we turn them back. >> i'm here in support of these children who have been brought to this country. >> to give them enough money. we cannot handle this invasion. >> this is not what this country is all about. the children need a break. they aren't criminals. >> not knowing exactly when the buses would arrive, some people spent the entire night out here. >> if we argued about that, you don't want to listen. >> that's racist. >> as the sun rose, the crowd only got more vocal. [shouting] >> one person was arrested for allegedly obstructing a police

officer. by lunchtime things appeared to be getting a little out of hand. >> getting really close to having a chaotic situation. >> so police divided the crowd. but even with law enforcement in the middle -- [chanting and shouting] >> there was still plenty of yelling. >> what are you going to do when the buses get here? >> i'm going to stand in the middle of the road. i'm going to stop them if we can. if they arrest us, i guess they will arrest us. >> this is not what but should be doing. we should be embracing these kids and opening doors for them. >> while this may be an exercise of first amendment rights, some feel a lot of it is a waste of time. >> you have people chanting ignorant slogans back and forth and no one is really listening. it's a dialogue. that's unfortunate. >> the san jose super eater joey chestnut had two wins yesterday. one professional, one personal.

before nathan's hot dog eating contest on coney island, he proposed to his girlfriend. she said yes and then he hat 210 hot dogs in ten minutes. it's 8 shy of his record. matt sunny finished second with 56 hot dogs. a big day. >> two more world cup matches will be played today. yesterday the host country, brazil, faced colombia. and that is a sound of joy. teen brazil fans at san francisco's minus brazilian restaurant celebrated the goaltend minutes into the game. brazil scored again and held on for a 2-1 win over compressed marine layer. german soccer fans cheered on their team. fans fought hard but couldn't get the ball in the net. team germany scored early and held on for the win. mike shumann has highlights coming up later in sports.

you can watch today's world cup matches live here on espn, our sister network. argentine neonate's on belgium and 1:00 p.m. costa rica. it's of soccer. a decent reason to be indoors. it's a three day weekend. most people out and about. >> if you are waiting for the warm, warm weather, another day or two and it will be inland. some moderate weather and cool temperatures closer to the bay. we are used to it here. the low clouds and fog banked up along the shoreline by the afternoon. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. this morning the skies are clear in our inland east bay and from the exploratorium you see the cloud cover. it is cool with temperatures in the 50s. the coolest number about 50 from gilroy. half moon bay six-mile visibility.

54 san francisco. san carlos, good morning, upper 50s. by the delta, that wind gusts, southwest winds up to 29 miles an hour. definitely transporting some of that marine air eastward. we could see a little bit of fog sneak into concord this morning. here it is from our sutro camera. it is about 13, 1400 feet deep. it is allowing for the cool temperatures. the afternoon numbers of that been a little bit on the breezy side with that on shore flow kicking up in the afternoon. fog, and overnight today and this morning. the warming begins today. a little about the in our inland valleys and near 100-degree heat arrives tomorrow inland into monday. here's a look at our fog forecast. you can see it in the north bay from marin county over toward berkeley and alameda, the san mateo coast. and by about 9:00 it begins to fill in a little bit.

10:00, 11:00, we are looking at it more pushing back to the coast. so it has some rather typical, but as the high pressure builds in from the desert southwest the warmth will come inland and we will look for the coast to remain cool. in fact, i think we will hold on to the fog for much of the day at our beaches. so the week ahead in livermore, last day of the week today with temperatures in the low 90s. should be in the mid-80s. you can see the slow climb and the warmest day monday. maybe not 100 here but antioch and fairfield with the high temperatures coming into play. look for 85 in san jose. 76 santa cruz. 90 los gatos and on the peninsula a few low clouds around closer to the close you get. pacifica 670. 82 menlo park, and san francisco with the low cloud deck closer to the ocean. low 060s in the sunset and in the city we see partial afternoon clearing, mid-60s up

in the north bay, upper 70s from petaluma. a nice afternoon up in the north bay. near east bay near 70s by about 3:00. feeling pretty good in oakland, 77 in newark. and you head inland, the numbers will be not in the 80s, but in the 90s today. a very warm afternoon from pittsburgh through brentwood at 96. 91 pleasanton. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. 60s on the coast. mid-and upper 70s, perhaps, to an 80 around the bay with mid-90s inland. tomorrow warmer inland as well as monday and slight cooling four tuesday. wednesday, thursday and friday we could increase the cloud cover with subtropical moisture headed our way. it's always a way to keep it interesting in the summer and still cool at the coast. we will let you how warm it will number your community by keeping track of bay area weather on twitter at live doppler 7hd. if you are going to be by the coast, it has been awfully breezy and cool there. >> i would agree with that.

residents and visitors to get around. some meaters will continue to operate, as several city park lots. you will have to feed the meters around at&t park for special events like giants games. a sick child in using his skills with leg goes to raise money for those like him and those around the world. eight-year-old dylan prunty has a rare mitochondrial disorder and has spent most the year at the hospital in los angeles. he asked the designers to design a replica of his hospital. he built it using the design and other structures and the doctors and thursdays say they are in awe of his talent, especially considering the severity of his disease. >> it takes two months or two years for someone to develop this and dylan makes them sometimes in minutes, hours and days. he can pass up to 100 kidney

stones a day. >> they hope people will be moved by his talent and donate money to fight mitochondrial disorder. a woman freaked out when her son dropped off a videotape player at a recycling facility. she had $6,000 hidden inside. the son had no idea it was her secret stash. when she found out it was recycled, she took off for the facility. >> she was ready to crawl through the truck and go through it on her own. >> she told us and we were all freaking out as a family. >> good news. after digging through twelve tons. electronics for several hours, recycling employees found her vcr and the money was still there. her son says he now plans to buy her a safe. sounds like a really good idea. much more ahead on the abc7

when it begins to burn westward and by 10:00, 11:00, it is set up along the coast. we will see the 90s by the delta. upper 60s to the low 90s around livermore with 70s, upper 70s from oakland and low 60s in san jose. 60s day at the coast. we will talk about how much warm we will get and when we will see the peak hit in a few minutes. katie. >> thank you. breaking news out of pennsylvania where the 4th of july holiday weekend ended in tragedy. four children were killed when a fire swept through several rowhouses in philadelphia this morning. more than 40 people are displaced. at least ten homes are damaged. no word on what caused the fire. france is stepping up security on flights bound for the united states this summer. it's the first continental european country to impose

tighter security measures in response to u.s. concern that al-qaeda is trying to develop a new kind of bomb. u.s. authorities fear extremists with an american or other western passport could carry the new bomb on to a plane without being detected. french officials say the extra checks may cause delays on u.s. bound flights. u.s. manufacturer airbus is including a design that includes a cockpit without a view. the windows in front of the plane would be replaced by video screen, showing footage from the outside along with holograms of obstacles and the pilots wouldn't necessarily be situated in front. maybe even a cargo play and the tale. the flight deck takes up space that could be used to seat paying passengers. the design is just a concept. a new type of farmers market has hoped in los angeles. instead of fresh produce, farmers are selling fresh

profitable. there will be twice as many luxury seats. just when you thought a deal was done, another snag for the oakland a's, but the city of oakland still isn't on board. abc reporter laura anthony has the latest twist. >> it may be a day of celebration, but a's fans attending found little joy in the latest developments coming out of the team's efforts to extend their lease in oakland. >> we are going to have a good time. we are fans. we aren't leaving no matter what. >> we are just tired of the on and off with the wars with the city. we knee something there. >> the oakland mayor jean quan and they said they signaled that they want something more from the owner and lew wolff. and among the sticking points the city wants a team committed to stay until the end of 2019,

not just 2017. and oakland wants the a's to pay $21 million over ten years. not the $15.5 million in the current deal. >> whatever it is that we can to to get the a's out of oakland and down to san jose -- >> sam is an a's fan from san jose who thinks oakland's reluctance could be his city's gain. >> let's get them down to san jose so they can make money for everybody. it's a win, win, win. >> i thought he would pull that card. >> the board member worries wolf may follow-through with his threat to pull the a's out of oakland immediately if the lease deals falls through. >> people say the a's couldn't go anywhere tomorrow, they couldn't do anything else. but by not going forward with the deal and saying to major league baseball we better than you, there are bigger forces out there that to do make it happen. >> the contract must also be ratified by the almeda county supervisors and the oakland city council. >> and there's no park that's going to hold this one in.

school in san jose received the highest award possible from the girl scouts of california. it is called the gold award, earned by a senior member who creates a project that leaves a lasting impact on a community. >> they use my clinic during the day for medical procedures and people who are overworked in the field and for deliveries. it's also being used by some women as a refuge for maybe their husbands were abusive that night. >> that just confirmed to me how transformative the power of medicine can be. when you bring it to people who have never had access to it before. >> varsha will be involved in a combined medical program at rice university and baylor college of medicine in houston, majoring in psychology. >> i really feel like my perspective has been shaped by my school, as well as girl scouts. and for me to realize that what i can devote my life's energy to is combining medicine with social justice.

>> welcome back, everyone. it's 5:41 on the 5th of july. a live look from the san mateo bridge looking toward hayward. the skies speak for themselves this morning. quite cloudy and gray and overcast. but most of the fireworks are behind us at this point. looks like a great start to your three-day holiday weekend for many of you. triple a predicts about 35 million drivers are hitting road this 4th of july weekend and that's the high of the number in years. but all the driving will come with an added cost. if you haven't noticed, gas prices are up. it's the highest for the 4th of july weekend since 2008. the national average for a regular gallon is $3.66 n california it's $4.14. that seems high to most

americans, but not to this tourist from denmark. >> it is still half price what have we pay in denmark. for me this is paradise. it's cheap. it is i'll get the biggest car i can get my hands on just for the fun of it. that's what i do on my vacation. >> welcome back. hopefully you had a fun and safe night last night. this is the live look from the golden gate bridge. the traffic coming toward us into fran. very sear reason. cloudy and gray. you can't see the top of the bridge there but no traffic to speak of. hopefully everyone is hunkered down and enjoying the start to the rest of their weekend. a few people will be out enjoying the beach this 4th of july weekend, but this year some beach-goers are being warned to stay away. wayne friedman has the details. >> reporter: we set out in search of the western snowy

clover. crissy field and here at ocean beach, the national park service has restricted access to dunes for campers and for dogs without leashes. >> excuse me, ma'am. are you going up into the dunes? >> the threatened six-inch birds rest and nest here during their annual migrations between washington state and baja, california. this habitat is precious stuff. >> it used to be that all of this was dunes. much of this part of san francisco was a do you know system. and there's very little of that left. >> in reality, this might be, probably is, probably as close as you will come to seeing a snowy clover out here today. there are only 2800 of them left in the world. >> it's very rare and a special moment to see a snowy plover in its habitat. i know people who have never seen one and worked here ten years. some signs of elusive.

temperature range from the coast to the inland valleys. here's the way it sets up today. average high necessary the mid-80s. and then for the low to mid-90s in livermore right on through monday. tuesday we begin to see the temperatures trail off a bit. it should be a nice looking day today in the south bay with plenty of sunshine. 84 in santa clara. on the peninsula, low 60s return. half moon bay, pacifica, gray there. millbrae 73. some afternoon sun. 82 in palo alto. san francisco not much change. it's been breezy and kind of cloudy the closer you get to the ocean. 65 downtown. and up in the north bay. sausalito 70. 81 san rafael and 80 vallejo. our near east bay pretty comfortable with low 70s toward berkeley. mid-70s san leandro and 78 fremont. you head inland it's a different story with 90 concord, 93 livermore. it's been warm there all week long. and the accuweather seven-day forecast shows that continuing
