live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. good morning, everyone, it's 8:00 a.m. on saturday, the 5th of july, i'm katie marzulo. we've been advertising a warm up for days, you can see the low clouds and fog banked out from the central coast. the san mateo coast and the north bay. looking at holes in the overcast, that is a bird's eye view looking from volmer peak, 54 in novato. 60 and sunny in livermore. the low clouds and fog will be along the coast again today. but we should get a little sunshine at our beaches. so in the next hour we'll see the low 60s in our inland valleys, upper 50s around the bay and into the afternoon still in the low 60s at the coast.

but upper 60s to mid 70s will happen as we climb towards the 4:00 reading. and in our inland east bay, getting warm, low 90s and we'll see a warm evening in the east bay as well. with clear conditions, a look at even warmer temperatures in a few minutes. we have breaking news now out of solano county, crews are working to put out a wildfire that grew to 1,000 acres overnight. evacuations are now in progress for 30 homes in the golden bear estates and the canyon creek resort camp ground in yolo county. it started on the southeast shore of lake barriessa, six crews are fighting the fire, 10% contained. state highway 128 closed between the city of winters in yolo county and highway 121. no word on what started the fire. developing overnight, fire crews in hayward have contained a grass fire that broke out in the hills near cal state east bay.

don't know what sparked the flames, but they broke out just before midnight. officials say the flames were slow moving. so crews were able to extinguish them in about 15 minutes. the fire charred about two acres, no injuries reported. a fire displaced eight people in brentwood, started around 11:40 last night on sycamore avenue near a senior housing complex. flames spread to the building, consuming two apartments, two units were damged by smoke. it took crews 45 minutes to get the fire under control. back to solano county for another wildfire, fast-moving flames tore through a neighborhood, destroying several homes. the fire burned in the small community of colinsville. just across the san joaquin river from pittsburgh. allen wong was there and spoke with devastated homeowners who have lost everything. >> this family walked down the street of what used to be their neighborhood in the small

community of collinsville. a wind-whipped grass fire destroyed eight homes along the san joaquin river. stephanie said it started around 1:30 in the afternoon. >> we were grabbing water hoses and the neighbors was grabbing water hoses, fire extinguishers, as fast as the fire was spreading. it just started going to my house. >> and this is what's left of the three bedroom one-bath home they were renting. they say it all started about 20 yards behind the house. >> it was windy. it was real windy. it came around the side of the house, i seen the fire and i hollered fire, fire. >> the winds of more than 20 miles per hour picked up embers and ignited another fire a half-mile away. >> that's the eighth home that's been destroyed. and if you can see it, the fire trucks are there right now putting it out. >> the red cross it housing the tacts and their neighbors while the investigators try to figure out the cause. the quick destruction was a combination of extremely dry

conditions, high winds and a remote community that took firefighters at least 20 minutes to reach. in solano county, allen wong, abc7 news. the fire burning in napa county is now 70% contained. it's burnt 4300 acres in pope valley since breaking out on tuesday. the flames have destroyed two homes and seven other structures and three people have been hurt. evacuations in the area have been canceled. developing news out of oakland, one man has died and a second man is injured after they were electrocuted. police say a power line connected to a home fell, the men were taken to the hospital where one of them died. the condition of the second victim is not known. report of some people being injured or gunshots and fireworks. upon arrival, we found two gentlemen down on the sidewalk, in the street. it appears they were elect cu electrocuted by a downed wire it

could have been gunfire, fireworks, wire still investigating. >> police say the fallen power line started a small grass fire. the incident is under investigation. two men were seriously injured by fireworks in sunnyvale, on east duane avenue just before 10:00 p.m. last night. we've learned that one of the men lost several fingers, no word on their condition this morning. you see and hear that? kind of looks like a professional fireworks display, right? it's not. a viewer captured these illegal fireworks being set off last night in oakland's san antonio neighborhood near 14th avenue. not far away, the police who beefed up patrols in an effort to crack down on the use of illegal fireworks. and here's video sent in from one of our viewers, illegal fireworks being launched over san francisco last night. 26th and harrison street. injuries and fires are always a concern when it comes to fireworks. especially the illegal kind like

this. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard has details on efforts by law enforcement to crack down on their use. >> in neighborhoods, homemade fireworks shows seem to be everywhere. this one sent to us by an abc7 news viewer. she said the 4th can be a scary time. >> we're having dinner earlier tonight and somebody near our home was letting off some real loud ones, i didn't even know if it was, it's hard to distinguish it between a gunshot and an actual firecracker. >> we rode along with lieutenant robert mcmanus as he looked for violators. >> a lot of the illegal explosive devices are very powerful and can cause anywhere from minor to extremely serious injuries. >> back at the station, this officer confiscated this arsenal of fireworks from one homeowner who didn't realize it was all illegal. >> you put these containers in there, just like the military

uses, they're called mortars. >> one wrong move and the celebration could turn tragic. >> if they're holding them, if the wicks burn even faster, this will explode in their hand and they can lose their entire hand. >> cornell bernard, abc7 news. the selling of illegal fireworks usually heats up in san francisco's chinatown around the fourmt. but sales appear to be down the past two years. some dealers might fear extra heat from police after officers arrest tleed men suspected of selling powerful m-1,000s, another reason? people are turning to the internet to buy fireworks. last night thousands of people crowded into fisherman's wharf in san francisco to catch a peek of the fireworks. can you see some of the fireworks lighting up the sky. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana reports on the festivities despite the fog. >> for the fireworks, the

biggest worry was the fog. >> yeah, the fog. but everyone doesn't mind, as long as the fireworks go on. >> can you see the colors and stuff. i like that better than like regular look. >> thousands of people flocked to the waterfront. many brought their families from across the bay area. >> the girls are finally old enough to be able to watch the fireworks with a big crowd. >> wandering around somewhere and then friends. >> this is a celebration of the stars and stripes and the birth of our nation 238 years ago. for most of the afternoon, people packed the waterfront, at pier 39, an '80s rock band helped entertain the big crowd. for a lot of people, this yearly event is a chance to venture into the city to enjoy the company of thousands of people. the show was often a crowd pleaser, but at least one spectator was not a fan of the explosions in the sky. >> do you like the fireworks? >> no. >> i guess you can't please everyone. at pier 39 in san francisco,

this is abc7 news. welcome back. at 8:12 on this saturday morning as you enjoy your fourth of july holiday weekend, a live picture here from our golden gate bridge cam. handful of cars on the roads, certainly no slowdowns to speak of. plenty of fog to speak of. seeing less and less of the top of the bridge as the morning has gone on. but san francisco, you're looking at a high today of 65 degrees. we have breaking news out of pennsylvania, where the fourth of july holiday has ended in tragedy. authorities say four children were killed when a fast-moving fire swept through several row houses in philadelphia this morning. local media reports the victims are a 1-month-old boy, a

4-year-old boy, and twin 4-year-old girls. more than 40 people have been displaced and ten homes are damaged. no word at this time on what caused the fire. new details about a home invasion and sexual assault in san jose. police have arrested a second suspect in the attack which happened on tuesday. the boy arrested yesterday is 16 years old. police arrested his 15-year-old accomplice tuesday. detectives say either one or both of the boys sexually assaulted an 85-year-old woman after breaking into her and her husband's home. police say the two stole the couple's suv. one teen was caught after crashing the suv into a garage a few blocks away. a vigil was held last night in san jose for a palestinian teenager kid nnapped and killed. his burned body was found outside jerusalem. his family believes his killing was in retaliation for the death of three israeli teenagers. this was the scene last night near santana row.

dozens of people showed up to remember the boy who has family in the south bay. yesterday his body was released by israeli authorities and carried through the streets, thousands of palestinians gathered to celebrate him. they're now calling him a martyr. new details in an fbi investigation into the murders of five women on the peninsula which happened nearly 40 years ago. the gypsy hill killings happened in san mateo county in 1976. the fbi reopened the case earlier this year, after new evidence emerged linking a university of nevada reno nursing student to the crimes. one person is suspected in all of the killings. investigators revealed yesterday they're looking for a possible witness to the murders. a white male in his 20s or 30s, who was in san mateo county between january and april of 1976. he was driving a car with nevada plates. new details about a deal between for-profit corinthian colleges and the department of education. the school has agreed to sell 85

campuses and close 12 others. corinthian owns everest college and healed college. the company has struggled since a ruling delayed federal student aid money. the government is investigating claims that corinthian lied about job placement numbers and claimed to offer programs that it does not. metered parking on sundays will be free again in most areas of san francisco starting tomorrow. the city started charging for parking on sundays last year. but the program is now being scrapped to make it more affordable for residents and visitors to get around. meters at fisherman's wharf and those under the jurisdiction of the port of san francisco will continue to charge on sundays. as will several city parking lots and you do still have feed the meters around at&t park for special events like giants games. 8:15 now. and it's gray, it's a little gray this morning. >> but we're starting to see improvement around the bay. some holes in the overcast.

new details, the sacramento kings will abandon their arena to build a new one that will be the smallest in the nba. the "sacramento bee" reports the 477 million dollar project at downtown plaza is set to begin construction later this month. it will only seat 17,000 fans. still, the kings owners say the new building will be more profitable. fewer seats in the lower bowl will equal higher ticket prices and there will be twice as many luxury seats. two more world cup quarterfinal matches will be played today. yesterday the host country, brazil, faced colombia. [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] >> that is the sound of pure joy, team brazil fans at san francisco's minus brazilian restaurant celebrated the team's first goal seven minutes into the game. the party continued as brazil scored again and then held on for a 2-1 win over colombia. german soccer fans cheered

away. it was foggy earlier in san jose. today we'll warm up, do an earlier burn-off and a warmer air mass headed our way. it's 55 in half moon bay. 59, san carlos checking in at 59 and 54 with the gray skies in san francisco. gilroy was down to 49 this morning. so definitely a chillier start this morning. but we're making up for it this afternoon. our roof camera, nice and gray here in the city and once again, very little change downtown. with a bit of a breeze and highs in the mid 60s, by the delta, the southwest wind has been gusting to 30 miles per hour. but that will soon back off and we'll look for the warm 90s to return. the dry, dry air stays in place. in fact it is just going to get hotter in our inland valleys in the next couple of days. exploratorium camera, you can see how low the overcast is we'll look for the marine layer to have more holes in it within the next hour and then looking up, some sunshine for everyone pretty much, by about 10:00.

except at the coast. so warming begins today, near 100-degree heat, getting close to it tomorrow. monday should be the hottest day. here's a look at our visible picture. we can see the fog up in the north bay. marin county, santa rosa, beginning to scour out a little bit. by mount tam and all the way down the coast here. across the bay as well. full sunshine has been the story in our inland east bay. because of that, we're looking at only warmer today by a few degrees, as the high builds in westward, most of the heat, the excessive heat in the inland valleys. talking about temperatures above normal there. but just a little bit of warming at the coast. so also this area of high pressure bringing up some subtropical moisture for southern california today. it should come our way by the middle of next week. so hot weather for much of our inland east bay with low 90s forecasted today in livermore, a few degrees warmer tomorrow and into monday, into the mid 90s, in the delta, even warmer, close to 100 degrees.

we'll turn back the heat as soon as tuesday and highs today in the south bay, warmer, 90 los gatos. 85, kcupertino, it will be a gry day today in the sunset district. san francisco getting into the sun in the afternoon. mid 60s, low 80s in san rafael with sonoma coming in at 85. more 70s in oakland today, with newark in the upper 70s, fremont, 78, as well as castro valley. nice afternoon here. you go 30 miles to the east, not even, looking at low 90s, mid 90s in brentwood. with the dry, dry air in place for the next several days. upper 90s tomorrow inland. 100-degree heat inland on monday. and looking at the coast, coming up slightly, cooler with a little bit more cloud cover into next week. we'll let you know how warm it's going to be in your communities by keeping track of bay area weather on twitte

here are the winning numbers from last night's $20 million megamillions draw, 16, 33, 39, 58 and 69 and the meganumber 2, and nobody picked all six, so tuesday night's jackpot gross to $25 million. you can celebrate america's musical heritage this weekend in san francisco. the two-day philmore jazz festival kicks off today. it's now in its 30th year and it is the largest free jazz festival on the west coast. the smooth groove can be heard multiple stages set over 12 city blocks. there's gourmet food and beverages and arts and crafts as well. and this year's festival will celebrate women and their contribution to music. the festival runs from 10:00 until 6:00, today and tomorrow.
