and then there was a globe over there, everybody was looking at the glow. next thing we know they seen a flame, and everybody start flying. >> the fire is burning on the border yolo county. in the east bay, crews are ready to put out any fires that pop up. sergio quintana is live in fremont, where a fire crew quickly responded to a pair of small brush fires today. reporter: two smile fires along 680. we're standing on a hill where one of the bigger fires started to burn. this is the larger one. spread quickly up theside and was headed towards an alameda county water treatment facility. we're told several motorists called 9-1-1 about this fire. crews quickly respond. the incident commander says this is an area prone to grass fires

so they launched a response that included plenty of resource0s to make sure they got a handle on the situation. crews got a fast hold on both incidents thanks to quick air support. >> today we were fortunate because the calfire aircraft was in the air, heading to another incident, report of smoke. and they arrived as i did. they were here before the engines got here and started dropping retardant and water from the helicopter, which aided in slowing the progress of the fire immensely. reporter: the fire teams were able to get a quick hold of the blaze and made sure there was no threat to any structures, but hand crews did spend a few hours on he hillside chasing down hot spots and you can see where they were cutting the barrier ben we burned area and the really, really dry grass on the

hillside. they're on high alert throughout this weekend. reporting live in fremont, sergio quintana. >> officials are still investigating the cause of a brush fire that destroyed eight homes in collinsville in solano county. the fire started yesterday. when crews arrived two houses were on fire and flames quickly spread to six other homes. the red cross is helping families who lost their homes. fire investigators estimate the damage at 2 $359 million. firefighters don't know what caused a two-acre gas fire at cal state east bay. crews were able to put the fire out in 15 minutes. the warm and dry weather has heightened the risk of fire, and the temperature could continue to rise. abc7 news meteorologist frances dinglasan has more. >> live doppler 7hd showing us very clear dry conditions everywhere, except along the coast, where we saw the clouds

linger all day. check out how warm it got today. these were the highs that just came in this past hour. so cool at the coast, where we saw 60s, but we reached 98 lake port, 97 in antioch. and the relative humidity right now, an extreme example is half moon bay, foggy, 94%. versus livermore, where temperatures are warm, 11%, and with temperatures coming up, relative humidity will continue to decrease over the next couple days, and i'll have your accuweather forecast. three men were severely injured in two separate fireworks accidents last night in sunnyvale, two men each lost fingers. happened at fair oaks and duane avenue. one man lost two fingers on each hand and the other lost two fingers on one hand. police in san jose say man lost both hands when a fireworks he was holding exploded. officers say the firework was illegal.

in santa cruz, investigators believe illegal fireworks started a fire that destroyed power poles and three cars near an apartment building. they had to evacuate homes until pg&e shut down power an hour later in santa cruz, this man was arrested after police say he threw a large firework at officers trying to clear a crowd. he is charged with felony assault of a police officer. one of 22 people arrested in santa cruz last night. several oakland fire departments collected barrels full of illegal fireworks. the barrels were set up at four fire stations for people to anonymously turn in fireworks. no questions asked. you can see the bill is full -- the barrel is full. still there were several cases of illegal fireworks going off in oakland. pollution sale they issued 114 citations for fireworks and arrested 14 people on a variety of charges. now to a crisis growing on the u.s. border to mexico. at as thousands of immigrants are flooding into the u.s. and being detained for extended

periods of time while they're processed. some people don't want the undocumented immigrants held in their communities. it's led to heated demonstrations in texas and here in california. the immigrants are being flown in to our state because of overcrowding in texas. bay area congressman eric swallwell just returned from texas where he saw first hand how families are being affected. cornell bernard has details. >> the crisis in murrieta, california, continues to spill over as protesters on both sides of the debate refuse to back down. >> the temperature was over 100 degrees, and it got very politically heated. >> immigrant rights advocate joey johnson was there as groups of immigrants arrived by bus after crossing into texas illegally. >> we're talking about buses full of childrenment children have been traumatized by making a journey of some cases over a thousand miles, alone from central america.

>> what i saw was quite eye-opening. >> congressman eric swallwell just returned from the border where thousands of children are overwhelming border crossings. he talked to a 17-year-old from elf salvador. >> i asked him why he came here, and he said, better life. and i understand that. he came here to seek what i was born with. >> we -- from the republican party said these children need to send back. >> if we can find the family0s the children, we need to return them to their family. >> in the past four weeks 52,000 children have been apprehended at the border, swalwell says it's complicated. sending every child back isn't possible and adding more border agents is not the answer. >> until we address the conditions that are leading them and their families to send them here, and their countries,

they're going to continue to come. >> he white house calls it humanitarian crisis. president obama will be in texas next week, but so far a trip to at the border is not on the schedule in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> tonight san francisco police are searching for a gunman who shot another man last night. happened around 10:00er in harbor road. the 45-year-old victim was sitting in his car when someone opened fire. >> oakland police are investigating a fatol shooting. the victim was no longer at the scene when police arrived. his body was found nor 27th 27th avenue and foothill boulevard. the victim's identity has not been released. police are searching for the shooter. >> one man is dead and another injured after a power line fell in oakland last night, electrocuting him. the 19-year-old of oakland was killed. another man remains in critical condition. according to pg&e, gunfire shot

up into the air likely caused the power line to come down. in vallejo, fire crews rescued a dog while responding to a house fire today. started around 10:30 this morning. residents heard the alarm go off and got out. but their dog was still inside. firefighter found it unhurt. he carried it outside and gave it some oxygen. the dog was taken to a vet and seems to be in good health. investigators believe the fire began in a dryer. still ahead at 6:00. >> i noticed somebody yelling, shark! >> a witness describes what she saw this morning when a great white shark bait california swimmer. the family of a woman seen beaten on camera by a chp patrolman opens up about the violent altercation.

is expected to be okay of a shark bit him off manhattan beach in los angeles county. it happened as a group of long distance swimmers swam by a pier. unbeknownst to them a group on the pier was trying to real in a seven-foot baby great white shark. that's when it crossed paths with the swimmers. a surfer described what happened. >> the shark jumped right in front of the swimmers, and then we started hearing some

screaming. >> like nothing heard before. >> single bite to the chest area. he was treated by manhattan beach paramedics and transported to harbor ucla. >> because it was just one bite, officials aren't calling this a shark attack. the believe the shark was panicked and trying to escape. a woman's family says she was beaten on the side of the road by a chp officer and now they want that officer punished. a warning, this video may be difficult for some viewers to watch. the chp says the officer was trying to stop the woman as she walked on the side of a los angeles freeway on tuesday. she was arrested and is now in a mental health facility. yesterday the chp announced day were opening an investigation into what happened. today an attorney for the woman's family said there is no justification for what that video shows. up next at 6:00, one of the bay area's biggest roadways is shut down this holiday weekend. find out if it will be open in time for monday morning commute.

caltrans says construction work on 280 in san francisco is on schedule. crews are replacing a bridge hinge. today they were putting in metal girders and pouring concrete and reinforcing it. the next step is paving and painting stripes on the freeway. >> hope we can get it done earlier than expected but those things happen as the project goes on, we may know more later. >> the shutdown starts at the 101 split, continues to king street, another closure is planned for the labor day holiday weekend in september. the weather isn't slowing the crews down. let's get to frances dinglasan for a look at what is ahead. >> very pleasant in san francisco, live doppler 7hd showing us the clouds still lingering at the coast.

many locations, and temperatures will be mainly in the mid-50s, 54 in san francisco, 55 in oakland, antioch, milder, 61, and san jose, 57, you're low for tonight. here's what is going on. this hot air mass continues to build and spread from the southwest. the heat will continue into monday. looks like monday will be our hottest temperature for the week -- hottest day of the week. could see near 100 degrees. so tomorrow look for more warmth in the south bay. 86, san jose. nice beach day as well. 78 in santa cruz. we'll find some low 80s through the her part of the peninsula. 75 in millbrae. cool and foggy at pacifica. and downtown san francisco, warming up to 68 degrees. so that pretty pleasant and mild for us. also, look for a a lot of 80s in the north bay, novato, petaluma, 85, 90 in napa. east bay numbers comfortable and mild. t-shirt and shorts weather.
