live, from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, i'm dan ashley. i'm ama daetz. sky 7 hd over an emergency evacuation at the police department today. officers smelled something foul so everyone had to clear out. investigators believed the smell came from the air conditioning system in the basement. no emergency systems were affected. abc news reporter leanne melendez has more. >> reporter: well, let me remind you this is the station that had to be evacuated after a flooding before. right now this remains an incident, the investigators say they know it was not caused by a

gas leak. the incident caused quite a commotion today. >> at least 200 people have been evacuated at this point. >> reporter: just after 11:00 a.m., an oakland police lieutenant smelled something suspicious on broadway and quickly sounded the alarm. an employee thought it was just another drill. >> it was very fast. sitting there, and the sirens went off. and then you see everybody saying they evacuated. so it was fast. >> reporter: fire crews arrived with the hazmat team. all suited up they went through the nine-story building. at first they were looking for a possible gas leak but quickly realized the smell was coming from the vacuum system. a public service company arrived. no public systems were disrup d ed. >> 911 is not located here at seventh street, so that is not affecting calls for services on the street. >> reporter: people who came to

do business could not get in. they closed the surrounding area. >> i was trying to get back in my office but i couldn't. >> reporter: the l.a. county superior courthouse was next door, employees were not evacuated. but some were concerned. >> oh, yes, i don't know if i want to go back in there. but i'm sure they will let us know. >> reporter: pg&e tested the area around the building as a precaution, no leaks were detected. in oakland, leanne melendez, abc 7 news. a witness to the beating of a woman outside at&t park says it may have started when the officer made fun of her while she was drunk. >> more on the latest developments. >> reporter: well, the fight started across the street from the ballpark at momo's restaurant, just outside of the restaurant police arrested one of the suspects, one of the assailants last night. in sacramento, they're still looking for the other man but they tell me they know who he

is. as for the female victim she was treated and released from san francisco general hospital today. and as for the cause of the altercation, well, apparently it had nothing to do with the giants, the ballpark or security. the game had already ended with the a's slaughtering the giants, 6-1, the female victim should have been happy. witnesses say she was wearing an a's t-shirt. about two hours later the woman and her male friend were standing outside the popular post-game restaurant, momo's. that is when corey white noticed them. >> the woman was obviously intoxicated and the guy was helping her. he was giving her a cup of water, trying to help support her. >> reporter: white told us that is when a group of two men and women approached the couple. white doesn't know what started the fight but he says it quickly got out of hand. >> it definitely escalated from words to shoving to punches pretty quickly over the period of a minute or two.

>> police say one assailant wore giants apparel, his friend, an a's t-shirt. >> i can tell you this was not related to any team paraphernalia. any team rivalry. that i can tell you for a fact. >> reporter: reliable sources tell us the group was making fun of the intoxicated woman, even perhaps taking her picture, one hit the woman with her purse sending her to the ground. he said she and her friend began to fight. >> now, the second victim, which was a female, attempted to intervene to stop the assault. the woman stood back up from the sidewalk. and the big guy, the suspect, just hit her right in the face. knocked her out flat. just -- one single punch and she was down, out cold on the sidewalk. >> reporter: the group ran off but a witness took the license plate of their truck. the police later traced it to a

sacramento address and arrested one of the suspects, vic lee. and the man who died in the big rig accident near los gatos, yesterday's chain reaction crash began when a truck carrying dirt jack knifed and hit other vehicles. the highway patrol said that mcguire died after being ejected from his vehicle, he was thrown out. one other person suffered injuries. one person said the brakes started to smoke near the reservoir. the investigators kept the highway closed until early evening. it went on for several hours. and police released a sketch of a suspect wanted in a jewelry store robbery. they say he may have been shot in the stomach inside the jewelry store yesterday. two people were shot including an employee during the shootout in the store. the store owner is believed to have fired back hitting one of the armed robbers. the injured employee suffered a shot to the arm. an hour from now grand jury

transcripts will be unsealed from the sierra lamar murder investigation. the transcripts are from the proceedings against garcia-torres indicted in february. sierra disappeared two years ago and was never found. attorneys on both sides objected to the information. and one side believes it could be an unfair trial. and a woman accused of buying and selling dozens of bikes, prosecutors dismissed the charges saying additional investigation is needed in the case. police arrested rebecca hammock for having 130 stolen bikes in her home. and this was national gay blood drive today. they want the fda to stop its policy regarding blood drives. this drive here was outside san francisco city hall.

the proponents of the change says it marginalizes, and stigmatizes healthy people across the country. the ban was put in place across the country when the risk of aids was recognized through transfusion. and filled with angry residents upset about a plan to take on on-street residential parking places. they want to reserve hundreds of spots exclusively for car share companies like car share and zip car. residents say it would make parking more difficult in the city. >> for years they stopped putting parking places, they created this crisis, trying to push people away from their cars. >> we have hundreds of thousands of spots across the city, and what we're trying to do is to affect only 1% less of all the spaces. >> the program would convert 900 spaces into car share over the next two years.

the transportation agency would charge car share agencies to put cars in lower result areas downtown. and nba superstar lebron james is going back to the cleveland cavss. >> he pacific oceosted this wit phrase, i'm coming home. >> a lot of fans say they would never forgive james. now the feelings apparently change changed. >> the king is coming home, this is the greatest moment in sports history. there are a lot of things going down that are going to be great. >> in a first person article in sports illustrated, lebron james said i'm not having a press conference or a party. after this, time to get to work. the heat won two nba championships during james' four years in miami.

sky 7 hd captured repair crews washing over some unsightly stains on the bay bridge's white tower. thousands of tiny steel got embedded in the construction, causing it to rust. the new eastern span is costing nearly half a million to repair, half of which will be paid by taxpayer jui taxpayers. and hundreds standing in line to get new backpacks. >> it is a stark reminder of really the great need. >> emily and her daughters got here as quickly as they could, and still ended up in a long

line. >> we're hoping and praying and keeping our fingers crossed. >> reporter: they're not asking for much. the basics that others might take for granted can be budget-busters for families that are struggling. >> what would it be like? we'll end up going without something else down the line. >> reporter: sacred heart hopes to give away 2500 backpacks, each filled with school supplies worth $75. organizers say even working families are having a hard time making ends meet, with san jose being the fourth most expensive city in the country to live. and it can side track people for education. >> kids are really at risk of falling behind academically. we know that too many kids are dropping out of school. we know that between low income families and high income family there is a huge income gap which is growing. >> reporter: the parents here are trying to keep the kids out of that gap.

>> i'm on disability. it is a stretch each month. this place is just a blessing. >> reporter: last year, sacred heart gave away 2500 backpacks and did have to turn people away. so this year they added 300 to their goal. so if you are able to help, just contact us at abc7.com. a florida woman has an amazing tale of survival. she treaded water for 13 hours after getting separated from her husband in the gulf of mexico. the rescue crews searched for doris deed after her husband's frantic 911 call. >> i went back to where i thought we were and i could not find her! >> as you just heard, larry kept calling his wife's name. the couple had been diving for scallops when their boat drifted after arthur slammed the seas last weekend. he swam to the boat. his wife survived in part because she inprovised.

>> i searched at this point and saw a pipe sticking out. i literally put my legs and arms around the pole and just hung on to it. clung to the pole. >> when the sun rose, doris spotted a search boat and rescue crews then reunitedñr her with r husband. wow, close call, on-line retailer amazon making no secret of its plans to use drones to delivery. now they want an exemption from federal rules to do that. amazon sent a letter to the faa seeking information for testing drones as part of its amazon primary delivery service. the drones can fly 50 miles an hour and carry packages weighing up to five pounds. the faa allows hobbyists and airlines to fly drones but commercial use is banned at least for now. it is a catch of a lifetime even for a seasoned fisherman from southern california. are you readyçó for this? just take a look at this giant halibut, over seven feet long, it weighs over 72 pounds.

>> jack mcguire caught this in alaska, saying it took him 40 minutes to just reel it in. the world record is 57 pounds, less than this fish. and because they reeled it onto the boat it is disqualified by world records, still, it is a big fish. all right, let's check the weather. >> just for the halibut? you should have seen the one that got away. let's take a look at the weather, shall we? it is worth looking at. mainly sunny skies right now, beautiful afternoon across the bay area, just some low clouds drifting over the bay, more patches of clouds over the coastline. there were a couple of thunderstorms over the sierra, less numerous than we saw yesterday with moisture still dripping in northern california. the storms are weakening, thus reducing the risk of fires, the

red flag warning remaining in place until 6:00 this evening. because of the dry lightning strikes that could trigger lightning with the dry fuel in the area. but now with storms tapering off, it will expire at 6:00 p.m. here is a live roof top camera under partly low cloudy skies, here are the low forecast features. it will be warmer inland and we'll have the typical summer spread of temperatures early next week, from the mid-90s to 60s, the area of low pressure had been pulling moisture up from our south up through the sierra. into northern california. moving out now, lifting north as it does so we'll see this big ridge of high pressure, this hot air mass expanding west. that is going to be the main feature in our weather picture for the next several days giving us the hot conditions inland. overnight, pretty much the same that we've seen every night this week. low clouds pushing far inland,

low tonights, mainly in the upper 50s, low 60s, mild conditions, tomorrow we'll see sunny skies in the south bay with high temperatures ranging from upper 70s to mid-80s, santa clara, 86 at morgan hill, the peninsula, ranging from 74 to san mateo, redwood city, a palo alto, mountain view, pacifica, low-to-mid 60s on the coast, half moon way, breezy, look for highs, 66 tomorrow, 64 in the sunset district, north bay, highs in santa rosa, 83, sonoma, 81, napa, highs on the east bay reaching 74, 77 castro valley and into the inland east bay we go where we'll find highs tomorrow in the mid-to-upper 80s to 90 at brentwood. here is the accu weather, the seven-day forecast, the warming will continue through the weekend and into mid-week next week as a matter of fact. monday, tuesday, the warmer days inland with highs in the

thing to me was i made a couple of really sweet grabs in practice. >> you did. >> and people yelled, hey, schuman, you never looked better. and it did scare me a little bit. i am thinking to myself do i look that old? >> that is funny. prior to the legends playing, the san francisco fire department and san francisco police department will square off at the stick, that is set for 4:30. that will be fun. all right, well, some bay area teens are getting a leg up this summer and landing a future job in the tech industry. >> the high school seniors are part of genesis works which helps teams get help. they are part of the information technology worker. >> they toured the campus and got to troubleshoot a tech problem. but they also learned another important skill. >> confidence, being able to walk into a building and look somebody in the eye, shake their hand and be able to have a real conversation.

oh d live from the kgo tv broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. we've all seen how the housing market can go through boom or bust cycles. >> yeah, developers are investing millions in downtown san jose as a high rise, is it a good risk or a bet? >> abc 7's david louie is at the san jose market. david? >> reporter: well, there is the newest high rise, a brand-new project, with stores. san jose wants more people living downtown to support its

restaurants and stores. this is one time it is okay for the mayor to leave graffiti on the wall, part of a topping-off celebration as the high rise reaches the full 23 stories. a year from now it will offer 1200 apartments for rent, part of the plan to raise the downtown, from 800 to 1200. >> we are trying to incentivize the apartments and really have a complete balance for people who are living and working here in silicon valley. >> reporter: even more high rises are planned. 4200 apartments will be available here in san jose, an increase of over a thousand last year, according to one analyst for real estate markets, the vacance is tighter at 2.4. some may be young tech workers not ready to buy, but a growing segment is made up of couples, some with children, who want to

live downtown. people like this couple. >> we have a daughter, you have the children's museum right across the street. you have the great library at the university that has lots of children's programs. and we love the square, we go there quite a bit on the weekends and don't even get in our car. we just walk everywhere. >> reporter: jodi gar lives at the residence that was originally built as condos, the view is beautiful. but is san jose over-building? >> most of these are built with condo maps so they could be sold as condos some day. as the market changes we are trying to be flexible, and give people a chance to rent. when the economy is better in terms of finances, people will be able to buy. david louie, abc 7 news. in san francisco, this 400 foot tower has been proposed to

be rebuilt. these are artists renderings of the project. it reminds them of the chicago architect design to look like flowing water. the san francisco building would be half as tall. but not a done deal. the developers are asking the city to approve an exemption, allowing them to build a foot higher than is already approved. they would have 400 condos split between the tower and a shorter building next door. and homeland security jay johnson delivered a stern message for people considering sneaking into the united states. johnson says the u.s. won't tolerate illegal immigration. the government is dealing with an influx of immigrants from central america, many of them unaccompanied children. more than 57,000 people have been caught in eight months. >> our border is not open to illegal migration. and our message to those who are coming here illegally, to those

who are thinking about coming here illegally into south texas is we will send you back. >> president obama has asked congress for nearly $4 billion to open more detention and processing centers. but key house republicans say that is too much money and they wouldn't approve the spending. right now to the latest on the conflict in the middle east, today, israel's prime minister says there is no end in sight to the military operation against militants in the gaza strip. the death toll this week has passed 100, with more than 600 injured. the obama administration is trying to mediate this rising level of tension, abc news reporter karen travers is in washington. >> reporter: a significant escalation of violence in the middle east. the israeli defense forces say that hamas fired more than 44 rockets over israel last night. 11 intercepted by the iron dome, israel's defense system against rocket attacks.

they have targeted more than 150 terror sites in gaza, they say. meanwhile, hamas' military wing has declared war today launching four rockets at the international airport, the first such strikes. that is where abc's martha raddatz landed this morning, within ten minutes of arriving this morning she and her crew were sent below ground to shelter as the alarm sounded. the rockets were intercepted by the iron dome. the israeli military has taken positions along the edge of gaza in anticipation of a possible ground offensive. tanks and troops are ready to go if and when the israeli government decides to go in. and israel's prime minister said today they will intensify their air strikes in the coming days. not a single israeli life has been lost during the escalation of violence, but in gaza, more than 100 killed.

palestinian officials say at least several 100 have been wounded. today, the commission for human rights say the reports of palestinian children being among the civilian casualties raises serious doubts on whether or not the israeli strikes are within international law. karen travers, abc news, washington. and there are potentially dangerous germs suspended because of safety concerns, this comes as the cdc shuts down labs as safety concerns are taking place. one of the labs was shut down last month that could have exposed workers to anthrax. >> our labs, our lab scientists are a national treasure. we are essentially the reference laboratory for the world. so when something like that happens here, i'm deeply concerned about it. >> the cdc says another lab

surveillance video captured an expensive fender bender at a five-star hotel in india. look at this, a parking valet lost control of a lamborghini at the hotel in new delhi, what is worse the owner claims his car was damaged to the tune of $330,000. the hotel says it is an

accident, the valet was not seriously hurt but it is not clear if he will keep his job at the hotel. something a little more fun surf's up. this video shows black swans catching some waves along the coast. that is awesome. wildlife experts say they surf for the same reason many humans do, to have fun. at the believe many animals like these swans often mimic what the others are doing to have fun they say humans show similar emotions. >> it is hard to do. that is cute. some folks may be irritated when somebody cuts in line at a busy lunch spot, has that ever happened to you in. >> yeah, but they may be less annoyed if the cutter is the president of the united states and picks up the tab. >> they were in line ahead of me. these folks, i'm buying for whatever they're getting. >> you try the ribs?

jose and east bay. the san francisco model has been released from her contract, after she was seen in a photo hunting wild game. she caught the eye of the cosmetics company. and she didn't say if the dismissal had to do with the hunting pictures but did say the company doesn't test on animals anywhere in the world. she apologized for the picture saying she didn't mean to offend anyone. and scholarship loans, financial and savings, always to pay for college but when one student still could not cover tuition she came up with a unique way to raise the money. as abc reporter marcie gonzales reports, she had a bigger success than she could have ever

imagined. >> reporter: it was a long shot, kathy wesley putting her dreams for college, her future in the hands of strangers. >> this was something that was something that i would have never figured would work but i tried it anyway. >> reporter: the vanderbilt university student says she learned her financial aid had been cancelled after her mother's suicide last year and her father's recent unemployment, the 19-year-old had no clue how she would come up with the $25,000 needed to pay for her sophomore year. then, the last ditch idea hit her. >> it was just a hail mary. >> reporter: wesley created a page on the crowd sourcing website gofundme.com, sharing her story and asking for people to pay her tuition. the results, shocking? >> i sat in front of the computer for the rest of the night just in shock. >> reporter: $50 here, ten bucks there, and in just 24 hours she met her goal. >> it was absolutely amazing.

recorded? >> absolutely, here is the deal, i wish more people would do it. in the state of california, not every state, but state of california we're considered a two-person consent state. everybody on the phone has to understand they're being recorded. that is why they're warning you, in some states they don't have to warn you, but here they do. the problem is i have on many occasions said, i tell them i refuse to be recorded. they say okay, good-bye. that is the end of it. they do not have to take your call and generally they're not even set up not to record -- >> interesting, one woman said they're moving, the water company told her there would be a $100 deposit. can they hold my money without interest? >> they can, it depends on if the water company is owned by a municipality, a government or if it is private. that one, the municipality, or government entity, so they can hang on to it. what they do is after two years

they then just apply it to your bill and don't have to pay you any interest. now, if where you live a water company is private then they have to keep track of your money and pay you interest at the going rate. now, the problem is the going rate is what? .2% right now? they have to do it. well, a gerald e-mail, i set up, when i unpacked at a hotel some of the clothes had dark, oily stains, what do i do? >> tsa is where i would go, also to the airline, when you pick up your luggage if you ever have a problem right there they have an office nearby. that is where you need to go. you start there and also complain to the tsa, because both of them had access to your luggage. the problem is both of them say it is her. >> some of them blame the tsa because they open the bag to inspect. >> i suppose if you leave and

rocket launched from kazakhstan launched on tuesday. and if conditions are right, a rocket will blast off holding supplies and will blast off for the international space station. >> and abc reporter jonathan bloom says that two projects come from innovations right here in the bay area. >> reporter: most batteries warn you not to drop them, heat them or expose them to vibrations like these. when a battery is there, you have to make sure it withstands anything. >> what is the surprising thing you learned about this? >> the amount of work that it takes to put anything in space. >> reporter: he is working on the technology education satellite. the last one was deployed from the international space station a few weeks ago. this one has a single purpose, to fall out of the sky and land exactly where they want it to. >> when you want to deliver something back from the international space station you can use technology to do it like this very cheaply. so just throw something out of the international space station

why a north bay airport is cancelling flights including one that was just about to land. and an evacuation shuts down some city services, what happened inside the oakland police station today. i'm meteorologist sandy patel, a warmup is coming up, but not everybody will feel it. >> live, this is abc 7 news from the broadcast center. good evening, thank you for joining us, i'm ama daetz. and i'm dan ashley, three flights to wine country have been cancelled this week including one just about to land. the flights were headed from the international airport to the sonoma county airport. that is where abc news reporter wayne freedman is live with a look at what appears to be an ongoing problem. >> reporter: well, it is not so much a problem but a technicality with the faa. they have been doing runway work

here, trying to get it approved. to get the runway off to the side they need to land the planes there. they put new lights on there. but they have not been certified by the faa, hence the safety problems and delays. unless you fly here you would never know it. but the charles schultz sonoma county airport has become a busy place, almost 17,000 commercial passengers flew in or out on alaska airlines, but for those coming from los angeles there is a bit uncertainty these days. >> it is not ideal for people who want to fly. >> reporter: not ideal because they don't know if they will arrive on schedule because of a technicality. the airline is using a shorter, smaller runway with different lights yet to be certified by the faa. >> it is a question of visibility, not whether or not the airline can see the runway in conditions in lights like

these, but whether the plane can see these new lights under foggy, minimal conditions. >> nobody knew if they needed the runway lights checked. >> reporter: tuesday, the alaska flight 2472 diverted all the way back to los angeles and remained there. all told the flights have forced alaska to cancel three other flights inbound and out bound affecting 194 passengers, some of whom have days, the airline says we know that customers have been greatly inconvenienced and are not here to point fingers. >> over this project, at some point somebody should have said you need a flight check for the runway lights. >> reporter: well, the faa has been doing what it can to expedite this incident, they came in trying to do a landing in the fog but they couldn't see the lights so couldn't get the clea
