good morning, everyone, i'm katie marzulo, 8:00 a.m. on saturday, we'll start you off with a check of the forecast with meteorologist lisa argen. >> not only is the stratus filled into the bay, it's way inland, and so we're looking at gray skies with numbers near 60 degrees. here's a look at santa cruz, where we'll see sunshine and low 70s later on this afternoon. right now, we are looking at clouds from santa rosa up through livermore and novato, at 59. temperatures are mild, and maybe two to four degrees of warming. mid 70s inland. upper 60s at the coast. low 60s at the beaches, it will be cloudy there. upper 80s inland. warm day inland. but warmer day, mid 70s around the bay. clouds return for the early

evening hours and the warm-up gets even warmer, more significant come sunday and monday. the warmest day of the week. i'll have it for you in a few minutes. developing news, all southbound lanes of highway 101 at blossom hill road in san jose has reopened following a deadly crash. it happened just before 2:00 a.m. the chp says at least four cars were involved. we now know one person was killed, and at least two other people were injured. their conditions are not known. it took officers about two and a half hours to clear the highway. the cause of the accident is under investigation. the man accused of killing morgan hill teenager, sierra lamar is a sexual predator with a history of sexual violence against women. according to a newly released transcript of the indictment against antlynn garcia gomez. >> according to the evidence presented to the grand jury, antolin gomez was identified as a suspect, he was interviewed by

police twice after sierra lamar disappeared in 2012. it was in those interviews that garcia-torres implicated himself. >> he started to volunteer answers to questions that weren't asked. and the most damaging of which is regarding how his bodily fluids could be contained at the sierra lamar crime scene. >> according to the transcript, his dna was found on a pair of her pants recovered in a field near her home in morgan hill. her clothes also had fibers from his red volkswagen jetta. when it was confiscated by police, they found her dna on an arm rest inside the car and her hair was found on a rope discovered inside the trunk. clark says that's a key piece of evidence. >> the defense is going to have a big fight as to how there's an explanation for that huge piece of evidence for the prosecution. >> lamar's body has not been found. so detectives and prosecutors have assembled this case mostly

based on dna. but they've linked garcia-torres to a series of attempted carjackings in 2009. those were violent attacks on women in the safeway parking lot in morgan hill. his fingerprints were found on a stun gun used in one. attacks. detectives placed him at the scenes by tracking the safeway card he used. >> they're putting the three other attacks that garcia-torres is responsible for as part of a bigger picture. he's a sexual predator, he preys on women. >> tntolin garcia-torres was indicted by the santa clara county grand jury in february. his attorneys tried to keep the transcript sealed, saying details could unfairly bias potential members of a jury in his trial. abc7 news. our media partner, the "san jose mercury news" won a court battle to make the secret grand jury testimony public. now this is case that's been going on for more than two years. sierra lamar disappeared on march 16th, 200126789 on march

28th, investigators began watching garcia-torres around the clock. nearly two months later, sheriff deputies arrested him at the morgan hill safeway that was on may 21st. on february 17th of this year, garcia-torres pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murder charges. happening today, another rally to protest this week's decision to not prosecute a sonoma county sheriffs deputy in the death of a 13-year-old boy. deputy eric gillhouse shot and killed andy lopez last october in santa rosa. he thought the teenager was aiming a rifle at him. the weapon turned out to be a toy. sonoma county district attorney jill ravitch said gillhouse acted reasonably. because he felt his life was in danger. many in the santa rosa community are saying they can no longer trust law enforcement. today's rally at 1:00 in old courthouse square in santa rosa. developing news out of the east bay, evacuations have been lifted in contra costa county as firefighters gain more control of a brush fire.

the now 120-acre fire broke out last night following a car crash on marsh creek road between clayton and brentwood. the crash called power lines to fall which sparked a fire. 20 people were forced from their homes along bragdon way. fire officials say the flames are 60% contained. the portion of marsh creek road near the fire will be closed until at least 10:00 a.m. abc7 news spoke with a man considered to be a hero for helping rescue his neighbors from their burning home. this happened around 1:00 yesterday morning at a san leandro apartment building. neighbors heard breaking glass, saw smoke and ran to help. say they saw their neighbor outside, badly burned and disoriented. saying his wife was still inside. >> we heard the wife, busted out the windows, i asked her if she heard my voice. if you hear my voice, come to boo-boo boo. and she grabbed my hand and we got her out of there.

>> alameda county firefighters arrived minutes later. the man suffered severe burns, his wife, smoke inhalation. firefighters rescued and revived the couple's cat and dog, both suffered smoke inhalation. investigators believe cooking started the fire. new details this morning, san francisco police have announced a second arrest in a fight near at&t park that left a woman unconscious. it happened thursday in front of momo's restaurant two hours after the giants/a's game. the victim was trying to break up a fight between two groups of people when she was hit in the face and knocked out. 31-year-old francisco lopez was arrested thursday night. 42-year-old anthony rucker taken into custody last night. facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon. >> the big guy, the suspect just hit her right in the face. knocked her out flat. just -- one single punch and she was down, out cold on the sidewalk. >> police say the fight was not

caused by fan rivalry. the long-awaited police report on the accident involving oakland mayor gene kwan has been released. but investigators were not able to determine who caused the crash. the other driver said kwan ran a red light and was on her phone before the collision at 26th and market street june 8th. kwan denies that claim. and phone records show neither driver was on their phone. last night, kwan released a statement reading in part, as the investigation found, and as substantiated by my cell phone records, i was not using my cell phone while driving and it was not a factor in the traffic accident. i stand by my original statement that i do not believe i ran the red light. in san francisco, a car crashed into the steps of the hall of justice. an officer said he saw it happen. police are investigating if the driver had been drinking. this happened last night, just before 9:00. police say the driver was going the wrong way up bryant street and turned on to the steps in the front of the building. luckily, nobody was hurt.

new details about the accused prostitute police now believe gave two men fatal doses of heroin. an atlanta tv station is reporting alex tickleman told santa cruz police she gave heroin to her boyfriend last year in georgia before he overdosed. tickleman's ex-boyfriend, 53-year-old dean riotel died last year at home. tickleman told 911 operatesors, the overdose was accidental. but one of riotel's friends is suspicious. >> dean would never do that. put two and two together, you get four. i think absolutely she had something to do with it like i said, dean would never go down that road. >> two weeks before riotel's death, tickleman was arrested for biting him during an argument. tickleman has not been charged with riotel's death, but is facing a felony manslaughter charge, after police say she injected google executive forest hayes with heroin and left him

to die on his yacht last year in santa cruz. the case has shed light on the booming sex trade in silicon valley. sex trade workers say they've benefitted from an influx of tech clientele who have a lot of money to burn. tiffany wilson has the story. >> unable to find a job in 2009 joe lien parton turned to dancing at the lusty lady. >> what i heard from the dancers working before the recession it was insane how little money we were making because the tech boom in the late '90s and early 2,000s, had been great for the sex industry. >> today parton see as similar resurgence, thanks to new money, new customers. >> around here we're getting an influx of people moving to the bay area and getting paid lots of money. which is great for any industry. especially direct service industries. >> another sex worker who is based out of sacramento told me she commute to silicon valley because she can charge higher rates to customer who is have more money than social opportunities.

suzy q is a bay area sex industry entrepreneur. >> it would be ridiculous if i did not you know respond to the economic boom here in the silicon valley. >> she's noticed major shift in her clients during the past year. >> i have gone from having maybe a handful of some of you know maybe my best clients being in the tech industry in some capacity. to the majority of my clients being in the tech industry. >> the sex workers told me recent publicity surrounding a google exec's death and a call girl's arrest have not heard the industry as much as the closier of myredbook.com. it offered free advertising for sex workers, as well as a forum where they could communicate about safe practices and blacklisted clients. >> can you imagine what small businesses here in the bay area would do if yelp got shut down? >> she expects the industry will come up with alternatives and hopes sex workers will operate legally out in the open. >> when the work is not criminalized, it does not attract criminals.

place along bland road, fortina road is closed between raymond lake road and highway 36. so far, the fire just 10% contained. this is a difficult time for a lot of people in a bay area community after an unexpected loss. they say barnaby lactoin made the world a better place by being a friend to everyone. abc7 news reporter allen wong explains. >> you're witnessing what one man with an unchallenged heart can do for a community. >> he made a friend within three seconds. you don't know him, within three seconds, you'll be his friend. >> barnaby lakt or in was a friend on this road and he remembered the names of every person he met here even though mentally challenged. each day the 57-year-old man made his rounds with a replica wrestling belt in hand, waving

month's car crash. morgan was a passenger in a van hit by a walmart driver, ken roper on the new jersey turnpike. the comedian says walmart was negligent in allowing roper to drive after being up for more than 24 hours. in the lawsuit morgan alleges that roper fell asleep just before the crash because he was so tired. roper has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him, including death by auto. well this is bad day for a valet, surveillance cameras capture a expensive fender-bender at a five-star hotel in india. a parking attendant lost control of a lamborghini outside of a hotel in new delhi, the driver had borrowed the car from a friend. the lamborghini's owner claims his sports car is worth half a million dollars and the damages total $330,000. passengers say they felt like they were in a scene from the show "lost." united flight 201 from honolulu to guam had to make a

middle-of-the-night emergency landing on midway island after reports of a burning smell and mechanical problems. passengers actually say the flight was delayed in hawaii three hours thursday night because of a smell on the boeing 777 and about five hours into the flight, that smell grew stronger. >> i had overheard some of the stewards talking and they were talking about the smell getting stronger. and they were kind of whispering that we were going back to hawaii. and then another stewardess came up and kind of shushed them. >> the pilots said they lost radar and had other electrical problems in the cockpit. passengers had to spend the night in an abandoned gym on the military base on the island. then they were flown back to hawaii and then to guam. happening now, thousands of people in the bay area are participating in the 12th annual avon walk for breast cancer. we have a live look for you right now. of the golden gate bridge of course where we expect the

walkers to be at some point this morning. not there just yet. but boy, that's going to be quite the scene with that sea of pink going across the bridge. walkers are going to do 39.3 miles. so not a simple task. it goes all the way from san francisco to marin county and back, participants began at fort mason this morning. they'll cross the golden gate and end up on highway 101 in cordo madiera. we have details in a map on our website, abc7news.com. so good luck to all the walkers, they're doing an incredible thing and they're going to need some incredible stamina to pull this off. but the weather is mild. so that helps. >> it definitely comfortable walking weather with a lot of clouds until midday and even when the sun is revealed, it will still be comfortable out there we are looking for temperatures to be a little bit warmer today. we've been below average and temperatures barely in the 80s

in our east bay valleys. all good news for fire danger. the relative humidity will be decreasing over the next couple of days, as the warmth is coming back to the bay area. here's a live look now. from our san jose camera where it is cloudy. it's been about 60, dropped a degree at 59. san carlos in the upper 50s, 62 in oakland. fairly uniform with the low clouds and fog spreading all the way up the coast. filling into the bay. it is a gray start in santa cruz, boy, a beautiful day on the way with 70s and sunshine here. 60 in concord, livermore at 61. good morning, napa, 60 degrees for you and outside our window we're looking at some very light winds out of the west. and it will pick up today. that's the big change, instead of the south wind we're going to have an onshore push that will bring some breezy winds from time to time. so low clouds and fog this morning. warmer inland this weekend. but i think even around the bay we'll bring up temperatures a few degrees, the fog stays at the coast and it will be cooler

there over the weekend. but the summer spread does continue into early next week. here's a look at the fog. you'll notice it continues to cling to the coast from stinson, bodega bay down to san mateo coast and into monterey, san luis obispo and santa cruz will get the sunshine. our water vapor imagery shows the nemesis for bringing the cooler-than-average temperatures, an area of low pressure parked offshore. as this continues to lift to the north, the winds will come back to onshore component and that will allow for some warming around the bay. so we will be looking at temperatures to really come up just a few degrees today. so that will allow for a nice-looking afternoon. with high temperatures really warming up more significantly tomorrow. so as we look at monday and tuesday, the warmest days of the week, we're going to be pushing perhaps near 100 degrees in our inland valleys, 86 in morgan

hill. look for about 80 today, los alto, 78. and now yesterday it was 70, half moon bay, so with the westerly wind you're going to cool off in the north bay. 84, in calistoga, near east bay, 71 in berkeley. fremont, 76 today and we'll see low to 80s for the most part from pleasanton to livermore. brentwood, sunny and breezy and high of 90. the seven-day forecast modest warming today. more significant warming tomorrow. we'll peak with our heat on monday. extra cloud cover moves in as soon as sunday night. allowing for a partly cloudy day on tuesday. mid 60s coast. mid 90s inland. slowly we'll see the temperatures come down by wednesday and thursday. so we'll let you know how warm it's going to be in your community by keeping track of bay area weather on twitter@live doppler 7 hd. i've heard a lot of weather complaints lately because of the gray and cool.

do something, congress. do anything to help working americans. >> republicans argue the president's proposals would hurt businesses. and they propose their own measures. federal officials have suspended the shipment of potentially dangerous germs between a lab in atlanta and other facilities, due to safety concerns. this comes as the centers for disease control and prevention shut down two of its labs that suffered safety lapses, one of the labs was involved in an incident last month that could have exposed workers to anthrax. >> our labs, our lab scientists are a national treasure. we are essentially the reference laboratory for the world. so when something like this happens here, i'm deeply concerned about it. >> the cdc says another lab accidentally contaminated a sample of conventional flu. with a deadly bird flu germ. so far, nobody has reported getting sick. san francisco is considering getting rid of hundreds of

on-street parking spots and the plan has many people upset. yesterday, dozens of angry residents spoke up at a san francisco municipal transportation agency hearing. the sfmta wants to reserve 450 parking spots this year, exclusively for car-share companies. and many of those would go in residential areas. >> why not have it on private spaces that currently exist? what's wrong with that model? why take 450 more spaces away from the common people in san francisco that use cars to get around? >> the pilot program would increase on-street car share parking spots from 12 to 900 over the next two years. it's part of a plan to encourage car-share companies to extend their services to neighborhoods that are far from downtown san francisco. san francisco's mta wants to charge so-called google buses more to use muni stops to pick up passengers in san francisco and take them to work on the peninsula. on tuesday, board members will

vote on whether to increase a usage fee from $1 to $3.55 per stop. the mta says the tech buss are making fewer buses than first thought and the fee increase is needed to cover the $3.7 million cost of enforcing the pilot program that lets the private buses use the muni stops. protesters say corporations are exploiting city property for their employees' benefit. san jose's newest downtown high rise was topped off yesterday. it's not going to be home to a tech company. instead one south market will likely be home to some tech workers. abc7 news reporter david lui tells us they want renters, not buyers. >> developers say they're capitalizing on a trend, that downtown living appeals to a growing number of young workers. the cranes all over downtown aren't working on office towers, they're building high-rise rental apartment projects for people like jodi guard. >> we have a daughter and we love the fact that you've got

the children's museum right across the street. you've got the great library at the university. that has lots of children's programs and we love st. pedro square. we go there quite a bit on the weekends, we don't get in our car, we walk everywhere. >> san jose is encouraging this as it tries to boost the downtown population from 800 to 2500. that's why the mayor and several council members were on hand for a topping off celebration at one south market, a 23-story residential tower that will have 312 rental units. >> it's a lifestyle choice, so people buying or renting want to live in the downtown area. that's what they're going to do throughout their entire working career here. they're not going to be moving into a traditional single-family detached home. >> as the downtown population grows, downtown shops and restaurants will benefit. >> we're finally getting to a point where retailers are looking at the downtown as a great opportunity because we have both office space and residential in the same

neighborhood. >> san jose will see 4200 new apartment units this year. analysts at markets in palo alto don't think there will be a glut of rental units, but it might help to moderate rental rates with more choices. mayor chuck reed says new rental units will help meet growing demand as a result of job growth. >> we're not supplying enough housing to meet the demand, housing prices are skyrocketing, rental prices are skyrocketing. we're not over-building in that sense. >> in san jose, david lui, abc7 news. you can no longer spark up an e-cigarette on golden gate district property that means no more vaping on buses, ferries or the bridge. our media partner the marin independent journal reports that the golden gate board voted yesterday to ban the e-cigs. instead of using tobacco, e-cigarettes heat a liquid nicotine solution creating a vapor inhaled by users. there are a number of summer

good news for space-x, a launch that's been scrubbed for weeks will likely take off monday. the falcon 9 rocket was spesed to launch last month. but there were problems with the tank pressure. monday's forecast show as 70% chance of favorable weather during the launch window. falcon 9s mission will be to take six telecommunications satellites into space and return to earth as part of a reusable rocket test. and with our local forecast, 70% chance of mildness? >> there you go. you know what, that works. this morning we're looking at plenty of sunshine, though, in lake tahoe. temperatures in the mid 50s to near 60. this afternoon, how about 85, getting warm here into the 90s, as soon as tomorrow.

though. 61 in novato, 60 in concord and cloudy skies into livermore. a look outside our window. you can see a light wind, we'll be looking at more sunshine today. but boy, it has been rather cool around the bay. and today i think we're going to see a little bit of a warm-up because of the wind shift. so the warmer weekend starts to get under way today. really gets going tomorrow and the warmest days will be monday. tuesday looking warm, too, but we're going to add in some extra high clouds due to a subtropical fetch that comes in from this high pressure building on in. so it's as the high builds in, we're going to see the warmer numbers, but we're also going to see a little bit of moisture come tomorrow. so as for today, the winds switch around to a westerly component. and that should bring in a little bit of warming around the bay. but keeping the coast cool. check it out, just 60s in monterey, look what happens in sacramento, though, after today,

you'll be in the triple-digit range the rest of the week, 98 in yosemite and it will warm up here as well. we bring in the moisture, possibility of mountain thunderstorms into monday and tuesday. for san jose and particular today, a high of 80. the average high should be about 84. and tomorrow we're almost there, but look what happens on monday and tuesday. upper 80s, mid 80s on tuesday and then slowly the numbers will retreat as the high retreats. but today, notice the reds and the oranges coming a little bit closer into the east bay. even the north bay, with 81 in napa. san jose, it should be a nice afternoon today. you head farther south and it's warming up in morgan hill at 86, 74 in san mateo. oakland, 73, 72 in richmond if you're headed to the ballpark, it should be a nice day, more 60s for you there. with numbers starting at 64, 1:00, by 4:00, mid 60s.

the seven-day forecast, here comes the warmth tomorrow, inland around the bay, a few degrees warmer. and the high clouds monday, mid 90s, mid 80s around the bay and tuesday it will still be warm with the cloud cover. we'll see wednesday and thursday just a little cooler. with the typical summer spread. so -- you got to get used to that around here. >> yes, you do. >> thank you, lisa. in sports tonight the a's will try to rebound from last night's loss in seattle. that ended with nick punto and manager bob melvin getting ejected. hick's rick wong with the highlights. >> after take 3g out of four from the giants, the a's try to keep their winning ways going in seattle. they would have to get through king's felix hernandez and his court. things started offer well for oakland, scoring two runs in the first, steven vogt with a solo shot. jeff samardzija was making his second start with the a's, in the second he gives up this blast to logan morrison. samardzija went eight innings, striking out five.
