>> good morning, to you. happy sunday. i'm cornell barnard in for carolyn tyler. let's start off with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning. we are starting out with plenty of low clouds sun. we are looking at a cool day at the beaches but sunshine at the coast as well. hot a whole lot but a little bit. emeryville in the gray. mid-50s in the north bay, 57 by the delta. it is clear there. sunny in concord, 57. still clouds hanging on to

livermore and this is what you get when you wake up so early. a beautiful shot of the east bay. we are looking at numbers there warming up today. upper 80s to low 90s. s at the coast a little breezy and around the bay mid-70s to low 80 he is. the warmup underway inland. i'll tell you what to expect for the week ahead coming up. cornell. >> lisa, thank you very much. >> breaking news out of new jersey where a policeman has been shot and killed responding to the call of an armed robbery. mayor said the officer was in his head while in his patrol car outside of walgreens. other officers who respond odd to the call shot and kill the gunman. the security guard at the store told reporters the suspect struck him and took his gun. police believe that gun was used to kill the officer. a small but vocal group in santa rosa turned their peaceful protest over the shooting death of a santa rosa teenager into something far more confrontational. [indiscernible chanting] >> protests began with chanting,

but it took an unusual turn. this is streamed video that was posted online. demonstrators actually shut down parts after freeing. andy lopez was killed last year by a sheriffs deputy who was not charged with the crime. lisa amin gulezian has more. [sirens] >> reporter: cries for justice while hundreds protested the district attorney's decision to clear the officer of any wrongdoing. officer mistook the teenager's air soft pellet gun for a real assault rifle. [chanting] >> the protests took a surprising turn as a group of activists split from the majority and marched up the third street off-ramp of northbound 101.

they have blocked traffic until they were coked off the highway. once on the street. protesters were met by dozens of officers. the group made another unexpected move by marching straight into macy's in santa rosa plaza. >> everybody was standing off to the side, letting them pass a lot of cheering. they were very, very passionate. they had the signs and everything. >> about 50 people packed the main aisle of the lower level of macy's. they were in and out in just 30 seconds. these macy's employees didn't find the march through macy's to be disruptive. >> i think people need an opportunity to be heard is if you were to squash that or squelch that it could be worse. >> support he is vowed to keep up the fight. they want the officer gone. >> he needs to be charged, tried and hopefully convicted. >> the deputy has returned to duty. lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> this morning people have returned to their ingleside heights home in san francisco.

they were forced out by san francisco police and a man with a gun hold up inside his home near saint charles avenue and randolph streets. officers evacuated homes. man was threatening suicide, they say the standoff ended peacefully, just before 11:00 last night. officers say the man surrendered and is now in police custody. >> police in north bay want to question a man with a deadly hit-and-run. chp investigators believe 30-year-old man was driving south of santa rosa on petaluma road near hunter lane when he hit and killed a man walking on the street just after 4:00 yesterday morning. his car has been recovered. the victim has been identified as a man from santa rosa. a man who lost 18 years of his life after being wrongly convict already receive a $3.5 million payment from the city of san francisco. mr. connelly filed a lawsuit against the city for that amount. according to "the san francisco chronicle" the city agreed to

pay it. he was convicted in the double murder and sentenced to two life terms, but in december of 2012, a judge found that police investigators knew the star witness against connelly lied on the stand about being paid, but did nothing about it. cleanup crews will be back at the union square this morning after a watermain break flooded the basements of some very high-end school. the contractor hit an 8-inch watermain yesterday morning. firefighters say at least 100,000 gallons of water spilled on to sidewalks and basements. crews shut off power while workers pumped out the water and lugged bags upstairs. >> mostly just storeroom, stock room cardboard boxes, some office furniture. not a high-dollar damage at this point. >> oh, that's just awful. this is the worst. the worst, most ridiculous inconvenience to us and the clients. >> yeah, it was quite a mess. construction crew that hit the

watermain was work on the union square station for the central subway project. the father of missing morgan hill teen sierra lamar said it's hard hearing about the graphic evidence inside the transcripts. the nearly 2,000 page grand jury transcript lays out a case against the defendant. he had fibers from the interior on his volkswagen jetta and her hair was found on a rope in the trunk. the father said he hasn't read the document. >> right now i'm saying no. maybe i will get to that point eventually, but i know what i need to know. >> a team of searchers scoured some rough terrain near morgan hill yesterday. sierra went missing in march, 2012. searches for her are conducted weekly. state forest officials have arrested a man on suspicion of starting a huge shasta county wildfire.

37-year-old alexander smoke iii was taken into custody late friday night on what is being called the bully fire. the plays began when the exhaust from smoak's truck ignited dry grass at an illegal mariner grow site. the bully fire burned just short of 3,000 acres. flames caused evacuation of 350 -- radio homes, but residents are now allowed back in and the fire is 10% contained. a fire in eastern contra costa county is fully contained. it appeared the fire started around 10:00 friday night when a car drove into a power pole, knock down several powerlines. marsh street road between clayton and brentwood were evacuated. the fire charred 80 acres. firefighters in san jose took action to protect homes from a grass fire yesterday afternoon near winnifer drive behind the high school. crews had it knocked down in less than an hour. no structures were damaged in that fire. san francisco's candlestick

have to add "football legend" to the title. warriors on the field and men who fans say have had a direct hand in shaping so many of their happiest memories. >> we are absolute fans of those guys. and we went to the hall of fame when jerry went in. it was awesome. >> once the game got started, it didn't take long for the guys, well past their official prime, to show the fans in the stands and each other they still had what it takes to put numbers on the board. >> we have admired them since we were little. so it's great to see those heroes out on the field. >> it's only flag football, but don't think for one minute the stakes aren't high. this group of retired players came hard and came with the desire to win. and i'm happy to report there were no broken bones or injuries beyond a scraped knee or two. after all, this was all for the fans. at the stick, nick smith, abc7 news. >> yes, indeed, it was.

in two weeks the san jose earthquakes play the last game ever at the stick against madrid. and paul mccartney will close down the stadium with a concert. there will be highlights of the candlestick games, including a very dramatic finish. a sign of the times in the south bay where a freeway off-ramp signs for levi stadium have gone up. this sign popped up in santa clara. it directs drivers to levi stadium, the first game will happen next month. can't believe it. beautiful weekend on top? >> and the good thing about a levi stadium game, you won't have to bring a jacket always, right? >> right. and this morning you are greeted by clouds, mist and drizzle around most of the bay. right now 55 san francisco. a light west wind. that will increase. you will see some sunshine here today. but i'll tell you about the warmup, where it's going to be and for how long in just a couple minutes. >> all right, lisa. thank you so you have much. also next, lebron james proves

>> secretary of state john kerry is in vienna, austria, to join other world leaders in hammering out a permanent deal with iran's nuclear program. so far five months of negotiations has not produce the an agreement.

diplomats face a july 20th deadline. iran and the six world powers have been negotiating a deal that would lift international sanctions on iran's economy. that easing of sanctions will come in exchange for restrictions at stopping iran from gaining weapons. george stephanopoulos will be interviewing u.s. attorney general eric holder on "this week." this week" airs at 8:00 right after our news. join us for news at 9:00 immediately following. a little girl is getting worldwide attention after her touching effort to cheer up a disappointed world cup soccer player. luis left the tears in field after germany's defeat last tuesday. he was quiet until he posted a letter from a fan. it was from a nine-year-old fan. translate today english, the letter reads in part, quote, "i don't think you need to be sad because you played as well as you did, the best that you could. life is like this. sometimes people lose and

sometimes people win, but people only need to be happy." >> a very smart nine-year-old girl there. soccer fans will be back at the civic center plaza today to watch the world cup final between germany and argentina. the city is expecting another big crowd like the one that showed up for the usa-belgium game last week. and also a viewing party at st. james park in san jose. you can watch the game between germany and argentina live here on abc7:00. our coverage begins at 10:00 a.m. remember you can watch the game, on the go on your smartphone or tablet with watchabc. you won't be the only one watching. lebron james is brazil to watch the games. yesterday he made his first public appearance since announcing he's taking his talents back to the cleveland cavaliers on friday. lebron said he's happy to represent his hometown again.

it's a good day today, especially $1.99 gas. i'm taking my baby to white castle. >> love it. >> the tickets that normally sell for $40, have shot up to hundreds of dollars. hundreds are back to san francisco to beat the twelfth annual avon walk for breast cancer. it is a 39-mile round trip walk from san francisco to corda madera. they are all raising money. for a search for the cure for breast cancer. this afternoon's closing ceremonies will take place at fort mason. also happening today another sunday streets on tap-in san francisco. between fulton and lake streets will be closed in the richmond district. without traffic, people can pretty much walk around and enjoy local shops and restaurants and not have to dodge cars. sunday streets in the richmond goes from 11:00 this morning until 4:00 this afternoon. it's a great idea. there should be some nice weather for people later today, right? >> yes. we will look for partly sunny,

mostly cloudy skies there. rest of the bay into a little bit of a warming trend, especially inland. as the high pressure ridge strengthens. this morning we have two and a half mile visibility at the coast. and about six miles of up in the north bay with about 7 degrees of cooling overnight. so starting out great with mist and drizzle, except for the east bay valleys. here's a look at that from atop vollmer peak looking at mt. diablo where you see about 1500 feet of the mash reason layer. it is pretty cool this morning to mild, depending on where you are. san francisco 355, as well as half moon bay. and a look at sleepy san jose where it is still cloudy with temperatures in the 50s up in santa rosa. 57 with sunny conditions in concord. livermore still underneath the clouds. we are looking at our exploratorium camera, you see how low that marine layer is dipping this morning. it will take some time to scour out the deck of le clouds here in the city. and with the mist and drizzle

you may need your wipers, but a warmer day around the bay for most today except right along the san mateo coast where the fog will sit. here's a look at noontime where it begins to pull away from the marin county coastline a. >> bit in the city, just hanging there, and then it will be back overnight. then we are visited by high and mid-level clouds as this builds in and strengthens. it will warm us up slightly around the bay. it will dry out the atmosphere, increase the fire danger. the relative humidity decreases. but we will see a little bit of high and mid-level moisture slide in here tonight, into monday and tuesday. that gets us into a partly cloudy sky. but we won't see any thunderstorm activity. maybe in the mountains, though. as for the high temperatures today, upper 70s milpitas. 89 los gatos, san jose 82. 81 redwood city and 75

san mateo. some clouds right here, right where you would expect them. the sunset, richmond. 68 downtown. up in the north bay looks to be a warmer day with 95 in calistoga. 87 sonoma. low 80s here. and berkeley will the same. 74 in san leandro and upper 70s castro valley. a beautiful day east bay. head a little further in planned we have the upper 80s today in concord. a warmer day for you. antioch 94. right now still a southwest wind. with the sunshine feeling pretty good now burks by the afternoon pretty hot inland. tomorrow the warmest day, extra cloud cover, low 60s around the bay. still cool 60s coast and mild to hot again on tuesday with partly cloudy skies. the summer spread takes us through wednesday and slightly cooler the rest of the week. just slightly, though. we will let you know how warm it will be in your community by keeping track on twitter

the world-famous chef is saying about the not so sweet boating mishap and the ensuing water rescue. it's coming up on a busy sunday morning. see you soon. >> thank you very much. >> new this morning, a new study suggests that there are six times the number of great white sharks off the marin county coast than previously thought. six times. our media partner, "the marin independent journal," reports the study covers the water off stinson beach and up to monterey bay and the farallon islands. 2400 sharks are estimated in the area, prowling for marine mammals. that number backs a recent federal determination that the white sharks should not be on the endangered species list, a determination seconded by california's department of fish and wildlife. seaworld continues to battle bad press after the relase of a critical documentary "black fish

analysis" shows some marine sharks live longer in captivity than in the wild. but the a.p. reports killer whales in captivity don't live as long as they do in the wild, supporting from the movie said. protesters said the whales at the park suffer psychological problems and can lash out violently. seaworld denies that, and says close contact between trainers and animals allows for better care. >> it's that ability to have that access that is the difference. we don't have that in the wild so they are sort of hidden behind a veil. >> orcas born at sea land live about as long as they live in the wild. and a super moon has lit up the night sky the past two nights. the moon appears to be unusually large because it's relatively close to earth. that distance varies because the moon follows an elliptical orbit. when it's close and full, n.a.s.a. said it appears 13%

>> this is abc7 news. >> good morning. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning to you. we are looking at a beautiful shot from our east bay hills camera. but below we have plenty of fog, even mist and drizzle. right now 55. san francisco 58 in oakland. and half moon bay about a mile and a quarter visibility at 355 degrees. so it is cooler this morning. we warmed up a little yesterday and we will warm up a little more today. fog pulls back from the marin county coast. a little bit in san francisco. still upper 60s. breezy there. low 70s in oakland. some lower 80s in san jose. and more 90s coming into play in our east bay evaluation. not the warmest day yet. i'll detail the forecast in a few minutes. cornell. >> see you then. thank you very

>> angry protesters in one town said they won't stop until the man known as the pillowcase rapist moves out. the man has admitted to raping 40 women between 1971 and 1982 in the bay area. miss nickname comes from he used pillowcases to muffle screams. last month it was determined his home was in los angeles. last wednesday he was taken to a home east of palm day after his release from a state hospital. he was greeted with protesters who hung pillowcases on the fences and chanted a convicted serial rapest is not welcome in their town. >> we tried to put his face out everywhere so people recognize him. we are a rural area and we are afraid he will hurt someone. >> his neighbors say they will continue the fight until he leaves their community. >> we are hearing from the 15-year-old girl who is the only survivor of a shooting that killed her parents and siblings.

yesterday cassidy stay was greeted by hundreds of friends and neighbors at a memorial service for her family. she was released from a hospital friday. officials say the teen survived by playing dead. police say she was a hero by quickly alerting police that ron haskel was heading to her grandparents house next. >> i know my family is in a much better place and i will be able to see them again one day. >> a brave girl. 33-year-old haskel faces murder charges, and police say they wouldn't tell him where to find his ex-wife, cassidy's aunt. summer means spending time by the water. there's a big spike in the amount of rescue calls they are getting. abc news reporter david wright has a look at what is behind the increase.

>> this frantic scene on the california coast, a swimmer unable to climb out of the churning water, is becoming far too common. >> since july 1st we've had 50 rescues in this tick area, and that's only a half-mile stretch of coastline. >> 50 rescues? >> 50 rescues. >> across l.a. county, coastal rescues are up 300 percent over last year. the problem? warm, hot weather means a lot more swimmers in the water. ♪ >> plus teenagers are sharing videos like these on social media, luring others to some of the most treacherous hidden coves along the coast. the scenery couldn't be prettier, and the water is an inviting 75 degrees, but a wave like that churns like a washing machine. and if you do happen to get caught in the spin cycle, paradise can suddenly become lethal. >> you can get physically injured and then you can get taken under by the water. >> just this past week a swimmer drown here. lifeguards still haven't recovered the body.

so they are warning everyone to try to avoid more scenes like this. david wright, abc news, california. >> you have to be careful there. we want to update you on an incredible success story. a marin county woman who helped freed thousand of child slaves on the other side of the world. she is not slowing down. >> reporter: these are the happy faces of girls freed from slavery. this is from filmmaker roy cox, documenting the end of a crew custom in western nabal, the sale of young girls as indentured servants. >> it's beyond anything i ever imagined. >> this 90-year-old woman is the amazing woman that set the stage for this victory 30 years ago. olga was a lawyer about to retire when she went on a trek to nepal. >> we ran across many, many children on the trail, and they

all wanted to go to school. >> sending those children to school became olga's obsession. she founded the nepal youth foundation that gave us this video. she provided scholarships, homes for abandoned children, nutrition programs, and then they began rescuing girls sold into bondage. >> little tiny girls, six, seven, eight, nine years off, going off to a city, working 18 hours a day. >> the rescue effort was led by a man who years before had himself received a scholarship from olga's foundation. now she's president of a youth foundation. >> nobody paid attention that little girls are being sold and bought every day. >> they were sold by their own parents, desperately poor families who felt they had no other way to survive. they would work for a year and then be sold again for the next year. the foundation came one a plan, an incentive. if parents sent their girls to school instead of work.

>> gave each family a baby pig let and they could raise that pig let and at the end of the year sell it for as much or more than they got for their daughter's labor. >> the results are phenomenal. almost 13,000 girls freed from slavery in a little more than a decade. most of the rescued girls are in school, but the older ones also get vocational training. a co-op loan fund is helping them start businesses. >> we trained the only woman plumber in nepal, the only motorcycle repair shop in nepal that is run by a woman. some of the girls have been extremely successful, supporting their parents, supporting their own college education. >> the foundation now gets contributions from around the world. but the first donors were all from the bay area. and the tradition continues. these marin county middle school girls raised money with bake sales, babysitting and a read-athon. back in nepal a big public awareness campaign has virtually

light winds. from vollmer peak this morning, here's the marine layer. san francisco 55. 57 san carlos and gilroy. half moon bay is even worse with the visibility just over a mile. 355 there. san jose waking up to cloudy skies. and novato 57. by the delta that southwest wind a little less this morning. you will be warming up through the 90s. concord is clear at 57. livermore a few clouds around at 57. so we have the mist and drizzle and the poor visibility. the exploratorium camera. you can see that. warmer today just lightly around the bay and inland, anywhere from about a degree to four or five degrees warmer. and the coast sees a little bit of sunshine. the summer spread stays with us through about tuesday. so we are looking at temperatures today coming up a few degrees and the averages for this time of year stack up like this in the first column here. we should see 67 san francisco, forecasting a high of 68. notice the 90 in livermore, a

degree above average. a little warmer than average mountain view and napa into the 80s today. it should be a nice afternoon. with that we are getting dryer and dryner the upper levels of the atmosphere. the relative hamedty decreases quickner the upper atmosphere. with high pressure building in, that's what brings us the warmth today. but then we will see some mid-level and high-level moisture into tomorrow. the fog will be back overnight tonight. it's banked up along the san mateo coast. you see the mid-level clouds coming into play. but we are still forecasting a warmer-than-average day tomorrow. in terms of today, look at this. 102 at the state fair in sacramento. you see some of the moisture. perhaps a mountain thunderstorm in southern california, and then that should feed up through the southern sierra. 104 in yosemite, even through tahoe and the northern mountains, mount shasta could see some thunderstorm activity tomorrow through tuesday. 75 in san mateo. a beautiful day on the east bay,

the peninsula. 79 palo alto. in san jose today 82. 92 in morgan hill. but look how hot it gets tomorrow in livermore. how about 98 degrees? low 90s tuesday. and then dropping off into the mid-80s. so if you are headed to the ballpark today, this will lift, scour out. we will have plenty of sunshine. in the 60s today. a little breezy at the park. you see the heat in the east bay for the beginning of the week. partly cloudy tomorrow through tuesday. and then the rest of the week just slightly cooler and then holding steady and that wide range stays with us into next weekend. >> bring a jacket if you are heading to the game and sunscreen for the east bay, right? >> all of it, yes. >> thank you, lisa. in sports, both the a's and giants close out the first half of the season this afternoon before the all-star break. the a's are in seattle while the giants host arizona. there was one final game at candlestick park last night.

here's rick quan with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning. they closed out candlestick park last night with the legends flag football game. you will not believe how it ended. our own mike shumann was among those taking part in the game between the former niners and a group of nfl all-stars. joe montana started, but steve young and jeff garcia also saw time at quarterback. young goes deep for everyone's favorite wide receiver, jerry rice. from there young does what made him so dangerous, run. he takes it in for the score. schu did get into the end zone in the second half. here schu did get into the end zone in the second half. he gets open on this broken play, and joe montana finds him for the touchdown! and what does schu do with the football? he spikes it with authority. the niners rallied to win on this crazy play. montana looking, looking, but it's not dwight clark but former owner, ed, who makes the touchdown catch. the niners win 45-40 and eddy got carried off the field.

the a's may still have the best record in baseball but the angels and mariners are gaining ground as of late. cespedes and john donaldson were practicing for the home run derby. he pitched like an all-star. cespedes goes down in the first. jesse chavez had not given up a home run in over a month, but in the fifth a two-run shot. in the eighth the mariners were threatening. when will they learn? the throw is on target and bloomquist is out. the game would go to seattle. later that same inning robinson cano with a three-run homer off jim johnson. 6-2, the final the a's lead angels by just a game and a half and the mariners by 7. former giants catcher who made a courageous comeback from cancer made his appearance

yesterday. marco scutaro was back in the lineup for the first time this season. here he makes a nice defensive play but scutaro did not get a hit, going 0 for 3 and a walk. ryan vogelsong pitched well, but in the fourth aaron hill goes deep to left for a solo shot. the diamondbacks picked up some insurance in the seventh after hill doubled. para brings him home to make it 2-0. that would be the final. the giants have been shut out in vogelsong's last three starts. that is sports for a sunday morning. since mike caught that touchdown pass, we are going to give him the day off and i'll see you again tonight at 5:00. >> all right, thank you very much. after the game mike shumann tweeted, "man, am i sore!"
