traveling from amsterdam to kuala lumpur was believed to be flying at about 33,000 feet when airline officials say they lost contact with the going 777 at least one u.s. official says analysis shows that the plane was brought down by a sophisticated missile, although it's unclear where it was fired from and who is responsible. experts say the pilot, likely had no time to react. >> my guess is this came out of nowhere, it was absolutely no warning. >> reporter: the scene, unfolding in the area where tensions between ukraine, pro-russian rebels and kremlin have been escalating. in the past week, ukraine claimed russia shot down two of its military planes. one factor behind president obama's increased sanctions against russia announced yesterday. the president today saying the u.s. will help with the crash investigation. >> as a country, our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families of the passengers wherever they call home. >> reporter: this, another

nightmare involving malaysia airlines, more than four months after flight 370 disappeared. >> shock, you get a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. >> reporter: families waiting for information as investigators make their way to the scene. state department officials say they are still looking into reports that there may have been americans on board. live in new york, marcy gonzalez, abc news. back to you. >> thank you. here is a breakdown of the nationalities of the passengers and crew members that we know of, according to abc news. 154 dutch, 38 malaysians including 15 crew members, 27 australian, 11 indonesians, 6 brits, 4 people from germany, belgium, and 4 passengers were french. there were filipinos and one canadian on board. nationalities of 43 remain unknown. as marry mentioned this is the second tragedy involving malaysia air this year.

malaysia flight 370 disappeared during a flight from kuala lumpur to beijing march 8th. that aircraft also happened to be a boeing 777. investigators believe flight 370 flew off course, intentionally or by accident, and crashed in the indian ocean, 239 people on board. the 777 is one of the most popular wide body aircraft in the sky used by several major carriers including u.s. airlines like united, american, delta on long haul international routes. two engine jet first entered passenger service in 1995. it's known for having a good safety record. our coverage of the malaysian airlines disaster will continue here on abc 7. an update on the investigation at 4:30, including a recent warning from the faa for u.s. plains to not fly in that area. late, stay with us for a special hour-long edition of abc's "world news" at 5:30. a bizarre shooting today.

it started with two senior citizens who got into it while driving. >> it ended when one driver was shot outside the other's home on paradise drive near robin drive. nick smith joins us live. nick? >> reporter: good evening. we spoke with a woman who answered the door. she didn't want to speak with us now. police are looking into how the events played out and what they're calling a road rage incident involving senior citizens. >> this morning bam, bam, three times. >> reporter: antonio heard the shots that left the driver of the silver mercedes injured are the owner of the house accused of pulling the trigger. >> within ten minutes, a lot of police. >> reporter: police officers and crime scene investigators swarmed this house on paradise road, after receiving multiple 911 reports of shots fired. the first units to arrive quickly determined this was not a break-in as callers suggested

but something more. >> started off like a possible road rage incident. >> reporter: police believe two men became so heated that things took a nasty and violent turn. >> the homeowner attempted to close the garage door and the tiburon driver pulled in behind them and the door closed on the driver's hood. >> reporter: argument ensued, and shots were fired. >> homeowner fired the rounds at the driver, the tiburon resident, we know, shot in the torso, possibly the leg in serious condition at marin general hospital. >> reporter: police have not identified the driver of either car but confirmed the only one to fire shots the 71-year-old homeowner and the only person hit was his 69-year-old victim, and driver of this mercedes. as police techs searched for casings and bullets, investigators worked to piece out the chain of events. >> trying to determine the circumstances of the shooting and the circumstances of the self-defense, and really what happened here. >> reporter: what wasn't immediately clear to

investigators is if the shooting victim was inside or out of his car at the time he was hit. >> it's unacceptable. it's scary. unacceptable and it shouldn't happen. >> reporter: both men are cooperating with investigators. morning in stockton, a day after a violent bank robbery and high-speed chase ends in death. strangers are leaving flowers for the hostage killed, misty was making a stop at bank when things went so wrong yesterday. tiffany wilson joins us live with the latest. >> reporter: well, still closed behind me as police continue the investigation. they removed the vehicle that was used in that high-speed chase, but there are still a lot of officers out here investigating. today, the police chief says all of the officers who had to fire their weapon during yesterday's shoot-out are now on paid administrative leave, more than 20 of them are on that leave. flowers mark the ground where

misty last walked. a quick errand to the bank turned into a life-ending street chase and shoot-out, much of which can be seen on cell phone video. co-workers described the mother of two as wonderful, positive, caring. two female bank tellers were taken hostage, both injured but expected to ur survive. they either jumped or were thrown from the vehicle during the chase. >> we heard gunshots, i mean, there were hundreds of gunshots. i never heard anything crazy like that. >> reporter: stockton's police chief says three suspects entered the bank with intent to kill yesterday afternoon. the 27 and 30-year-old deceased suspects are known as gang street members. police believe the surviving suspect, a 19-year-old, ramos used the body as a shield. >> we do not know when she was killed or struck by gunfire, nor do we know by whom. >> reporter: police released new

pictures of the suspects' weapons including ak-47 rifle and handgun. bullet holes tore through 14 patrol vehicles. officers escaped serious injury by inches. >> they were attempting to kill police officers. >> reporter: those who knew and loved her, cannot comprehend the loss. >> boy, just prayers. i feel really bad. >> reporter: bank of the west calls the crime a tragic incident and closed the branch today. customers left wondering why violence ripped apart their neighborhood. >> it is scary for that to happen i wouldn't know what to do if i was in that position. >> reporter: a sign on the door says the branch mr. permanently shut down friday. in stockton, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. prosecutors are getting more time to decide whether to charge a mom accused of attacking a 12-year-old boy she claims bullied her daughter. a judge today granted prosecutors an extension in filing charges against the

30-year-old. she was arrested in may after authorities say she went to her daughter's school during lunch grabbed the boy's throat. she confronted the boy but denies touching him. this is the third time prosecutors requested more time. she was ordered back in court next month. fedex facing federal charges for shipping prescription drugs from illegal online pharmacies apparently for at least a decade or so they're charged. a federal grand jury in san francisco indicted fedex today. the government claims fedex repeatedly ignored warnings from the dea and congress. prosecutors want fedex to forfeit at least $820 million in profits connected to those shipments. fedex will plead not guilty, and issued a strongly worded statement reading, in part, we're a transportation company. we're not law enforcement. we have no interest in violating the privacy of our customers. we continue to stand ready and willing to support and assist law enforcement. microsoft is cutting 18,000

jobs the largest round of lay-offs ever. most cuts come from nokia's manufacturing and professional divisions, as microsoft tries to integrate nokia devices business it bought in april. the workforce surged from 99,000 to 127 employees with the purchase of nokia. many employees will be notified in the next six months. the software giant is based in washington state and has a big campus in mountain view and offices in other bay area cities. civil rights activists are turning up the heat on san francisco based twitter to publicly release gender and ethnic breakdown of its workers. usa today reports jackson's rainbow push coalition plans to ask people to tweet out to twitt twitter at a political convention in detroit tomorrow. also asking 1 million members to sign an online petition to add their vices to the campaign. other tech giants including google are working to bring more

covering navato, oakland, sunnyvale, bay area, this is abc 7 news. tsa screeners caught a man posing as part of the security team at san francisco international airport but not before he padded down two female travel who thought he was the real thing. vic lee joins us live at sfo with a bizarre story. vic? >> reporter: it is indeed, larry. now, sources tell us that investigators believe the two female victims were asian travelers, but they left before

police could question them. so the alleged imposter, booked and charged with only being drunk in public, however the investigation by the sheriff's department continues. we are told there is video they're looking at. more serious charges could be filed. >> reporter: it happened before 1:00 in the afternoon on tuesday, just past the tsa security checkpoint. eric had checked in early for his trip to hong kong, where a police source says he lives. after passing security the 53-year-old financier reportedly spent time at one of the bars. sources tell us he was wearing khaki pants and a dark polo shirt which could have been mistaken for a tsa uniform. same sources say he positioned himself behind the row of tsa screeners a he lured a female traveler into a small room where some passengers undergo more thorough checks. sources say they believe he padded her down.

after she left he reportedly brought another woman into the room, this time he caught the eye of a real tsa agent who confronted him and detained him until police arrived. most of the women travelers we spoke with believe they, too, would probably fall for the ruse. >> yeah, you're dealing with security, right? you don't want to, you know, contradict command or an order. >> i would ask for a female security guard because i know i can do that. >> reporter: claire knows her rights. the tsa says anytime they search a female traveler in the private room they require two screeners of the same gender. others say the real concern was the lack of vigilance by the real tsa screeners. >> how did it happen he could get into a private screening room? that to me was more worrisome, that they didn't know their own employees or what was going on. >> reporter: an international financier, who works for atkis

singapore. resume, barclays capital hong kong, deutsche bank, merrill lynch. he'll be arraigned next month. vic lee, abc 7 news. san jose police looking for a missing 81-year-old man. silva last seen in north san jose at stratton place yesterday. silva has alzheimer's, and police are calling him at risk. seen wearing agray shirt, white slacks, gray full brim hat. if you see him, call san jose police department. we got our first look at abandoned east bay school where five fires were set this week. this is some of the damage caused by the fire at adams middle school, which was closed five years ago because of budget cuts. investigators are looking for those who lit the fires either late tuesday or early wednesday morning. the fire marshall says vandals appeared to break in through a window and purposely set fires in five different locations. >> it was piles of debris that

american authorities are working to confirm a righters report that 23 americans were among 295 people killed in a malaysia airlines plane crash earlier today. here's video of an explosion after a section of the plane hit the ground. parts of the boeing 777 found ten miles away from where the bulk of the plane crashed. headed from amsterdam to kuala lumpur when officials lost contact. there was no distress call. a surface-to-air missile brought the plane down. russian separatists and ukrainian military both deny responsibility. ukraine security intercepted two phone conversations that proved the russians did this and will present the information at an emergency united nations meeting tomorrow. >> there is a full and transparent international investigation. for the moment, i hope for my

deep condolences to families and loved ones. >> aviation authorities from several countries including faa warned against air travel over part of ukraine. malaysia's prime minister said the international civil aviation organization cleared the plane to fly that route. the last civilian airplane confirmed to be brought down by a missile also in ukraine. a siberia airlines flight brought down in october 2001 over the black sea by a surface-to-air missile fired by ukrainian forces during a military exercise. 78 passengers and crew members were killed one of the most tragic incidents involving the shooting down of a passenger jet took place in 1983 in the sea of japan. korean airlines flight knocked out of the sky during a flight from new york city to seoul. moscow initially denied involvement but later admitted one of its fighters planes shot it down, claiming it was on a spying mission. 269 people died, including a u.s. congressman.

parts of the plane and bodies are scattered up to ten miles from the main crash site. ukraine security blames russian separatists for the attack and they plan to submit phone calls reported as evidence of a plot and emergency united nations meeting tomorrow. russian president vladimir putin said today, ukraine is to blame because of the unrest in that area. president obama talked to putin as well as ukraine's president right after the crash. mr. obama has directed top u.s. officials to keep in close contact with ukraine over the next few days. >> the united states will offer any assistance we can to help determine what happened and why. and as a country, our thoughts and prayers are with all of the families of the passengers, wherever they call home. >> the russian rebels are expected to call for a three-day truce with ukraine forces to let in humanitarian groups. this comes one day after the white house imposed economic sanctions against russia because of the
