live from the kgo tv broadcast center this is abc 7 news. at least one american citizen was killed. my thoughts and prayers are with his family for this terrible loss. >> president obama announcing this morning that an american was among the victims on the doomed malaysia airlines flight shot down over ukraine. >> thanks for joining us. president obama confirmed it was a missile attack that brought down the flight with 298 people on board over the ukraine. he joined countries world wide

in calling for an impartial international investigation and called for a cease fire in the region so the investigation can move forward. let's go live to karen traverse in washington, d.c. >> reporter: president obama spoke at the white house earlier today and called the deaths on malaysia airlines flight 17 an outrage of unspeakable proportion. nearly 300 innocent civilians including children and infants. the president also called for a cease fire in eastern ukraine saying that russia, the pro russian rebels and the ukraine yns must make it happen. today the focus turns to who shot down malaysia airlines flight 17 and why? >> this was a global tragedy. there has to be a credible international investigation into what happened. >> reporter: u.s. officials said it was a single missile mounted on a vehicle fired from an area of ukraine controlled by russian separatists.

president obama laid the ultimate blame on russia. >> a group of separatists can't shoot down military transport planes or shoot down fighter jets without sophisticated equipment and training. that is coming from russia. >> reporter: ukrainians called it an act of terror and released messages proving they thought they were targeting a ukrainian military plane. the pro-russian rebels are controlling the crash scene. >> just like a crime scene investigation you don't want anybody to touch it. you don't want anything moved. >> reporter: we are learning about the 198 passengers on board the doomed flight. one was a dutch student at indiana university going on vacation with her boyfriend. >> i am in disbelief and expecting her to pop up on facebook and tell everybody she is okay.

>> reporter: also as much as 108 aids activists heading to a major conference in melbourne, australia. president obama said there is at least one american on the flight, a young man of u.s. and dutch dual citizenship. the fbi and ntsb will send at least one investigator to assist at the crash scene. >> thank you so much. the tragic loss of key leaders in the fight against aids is being felt around the world. abc 7 news reporter joins us from ucsf with more. >> reporter: i just talked with dr. eric gusbe. in 2009 president obama appointed him an ambassador at large in the u.s. global aids coordinator. he worked along side lang in the 1980s. lang was killed in the crash and has been called a pioneer in

evening. ucsf tells me at least 30 researchers with the university are attending the conference. a mother in amsterdam said she narrowly missed the doomed flight. she was so emotional while holding her baby. >> shaken. i don't know what to do. coming to the airport. i'm just thinking that i feel like i have been given a second chance. >> another couple from australia finishing their honeymoon says they were booked on the flight but rescheduled at the last minute to avoid being jet lagged when they went back to work. this graphic shows the path of

the stockton woman killed in a bank robbery will hold a press conference today. misty holt-singh was killed after men took her hostage and led police on an hour long chase. stockton police are defending their decision to fire at armed bank robbery suspects even though it resulted in the death of a hostage. holt-singh's relatives say their family friend and attorney will speak at the news conference and did not say whether they are pursuing legal actions. jaime ramos is in custody in san joaquin county jail facing several charges. the two accomplices documented gang members died in the shootout. new this morning police in san francisco have arrested this man, 57-year-old german woods, in connection with a string of robberies and burglaries that targeted the asian community. he is believed to have been

robbing them for months. in the south bay the chp identified the driver involved in a suspected drunk driving crash that killed a young woman. investigators say 34-year-old was speeding on northbound 101 when his car flipped into a ditch. it happened just before 2:00 this morning. the chp believes five people in the car were coming from a birthday celebration. one of them turned 23 yesterday. the young woman was killed and the other in the hospital with moderate to major injuries. the chp says the smell of alcohol was overwhelming and no one was wearing a seat belt. sweeping restrictions take effect on medical marijuana dispensaries. cannabis clubs in san jose will not be allowed to do business in residential areas or near schools. sellers are required to grow their own marijuana and have on

site security. shop owners say the regulations are too tough and can force many of them to close. several are trying to find ways to stay open while others have been gathering signatures for a voter referendum to soften the law. we have a heart warming story out of south bay where children are shopping for school supplies with san jose police officers and chp officers. mack keller joins us in the target store. a lot of groups are helping in this effort. >> they are. and kids and the cops just finished up shopping here at target about 15 minutes ago. this is a fun event but for one family it is helping them deal with a tragedy. san jose police officer steve robinson and sabrina met about a half hour ago but feel like family. >> keeps giving me advice. if i am shopping with my daughter my granddaughter all over again. >> reporter: they are taking

part in shop with a cop at silicon valley. the organization asks community groups to take kids who need help. sometimes socks are more than just socks. for the family it is something a grieving father doesn't have to think about providing. on april 29 his wife and their mother 28-year-old teresa was stabbed to death in her san jose apartment by a relative. the world changed in an instant. >> i reached out to him to see where he was at and if he needed resources and he said i am lost. i have no help. people are saying i am going to call you back and help you with this and that. at this point i have no income and i have no idea what people are saying because of the language barrier. >> reporter: new shoes and school supplies doesn't take away the pain. the officers feel a responsibility to the young

opponents of the idea of splitting california into separate states are fighting to keep the measure off the ballot and opponents said some misled to get signatures to split the golden state. they filed a complaint with the secretary of state. this week supporters of the split submitted 1.3 million signatures to try to put it on the ballot in 2015.

county registrars are working to determine the validity of the signatures. 49ers new stadium is officially open and the nfl commissioner wants to give the team some company, the oakland raiders. >> we believe the new stadium is appropriate for the raiders. they have to make that determination whether they are in a new stadium oin oakland or whether they feel it is best to join this stadium. we are working on that. that is one of the decisions we will have to make going forward. >> goodell made the announcement during the ribbon cutting event yesterday. in san diego county a special lady is warming up her shoulder on getting ready to become the oldest person ever to toss the first pitch at a padres game. at 105 years old she shows no signs of slowing down. in honor of her big day she was chosen to throw the first pitch.

this is abc 7 news. this just in. police have confirmed they have arrested a woman wanted for robbing some children of their candy money at a san francisco liquor store on monday. officers arrested 46-year-old ladonna christian, a san francisco resident yesterday. they say she is the woman seen in the surveillance video with two young girls selling candy to raise money for school. she said she needed bus fare and the girl was about to give her change when she grabbed her arm and made her drop her money. the girl was not hurt. and a meteor scene in five

states captured on a driver's dash cam. hundreds of people reported seeing a fire ball last night. a nasa employee said the object is so low on the horizon he believes the picture shows the meteor breaking up. one man says it is gorgeous and will never forget it. >> a commentator captured startling images taken by the european space agency probe that shows the comet chasing for the last decade. these were shot from several thousand miles away. the comet looks like a strange looking potato. mission scientists believe the comet 67-p is two separate lumps of rock and ice flying in candm. the probe is hoping to drop a lander on its target. i don't know if we will see meteor or anything with these

clouds. let's take a look outside. lake tahoe looks clear but thunderstorms are on the horizon. expect unstable weather there this weekend. a look at radar satellite the fog is starting to burn off however cloud cover and thick marine layer is here to stay for the weekend. some clearing already such as san jose we see the sun blowing through. oakland 66. 70 degrees in san jose. half moon bay 63 degrees. we have a game. the a's taking on the orioles. 53 degrees. it will be cloudy with increasing clouds overnight and will be about 58 degrees by the end of the game. we have a plume of moisture bearing down on the bay area. just behind it we have the ridge of high pressure that is going to come in from the desert area bringing our temperatures up for the middle of next week. i will have your full forecast in just a moment but do join us this sunday at the aids walk.
