♪ live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. good morning, everyone, i'm katie marzulo, it's 8:00 a.m. on saturday. we start off with a quick look at the weather, here's meteorologist frances lawson in for lisa argen. >> looking from emeryville to the west. we see the marine layer deeper than we expected. it might take some time for low clouds to dissipate. as we take you above the clouds, we'll see some high clouds starting to pass through this afternoon. inland areas will be a touch warmer today. you'll reach the upper 80s along the coast and in san francisco, the clouds and fog will stick around throughout the day. temperatures near the mid 60s and then around the bay, partly

cloudy conditions, temperatures in the 70s. we have humidity making a comeback. i'll explain with the seven-day forecast. katie? >> thank you. this morning new clues are emerging from the downing of a malaysia air passenger jet. the plane was shot down in an area of ukraine controlled by forces loyal to russia. but there are fears that the separatists are complicating the crash investigation. abc's kirk hawkins joins us live with the latest. kirk? >> katie, right now dozens of detectives are fanning out all across the netherlands, hoping to collect dna samples that they hope will identify victims there. all this as investigators say they're struggling with limited access to the crash site. >> the wreckage still smoldered, bodies and belongings still uncollected where the first international investigators of the scene have not been given full access. >> we are concerned that the crash site has not been properly secured. >> at least one american is

among the dead. quinn lucas schansman, a 19-year-old with dual u.s. citizenship. on his way to meet his family for a vacation. his grandfather was visiting a relative in new jersey. >> you just hope that none of the children or the grandchildren go before you. and now it has happened. >> u.s. officials say they believe pro russian separatists are to blame. claiming the same group took down two ukrainian military planes in the past week. >> a group of separatists can't shoot down military transport planes or they claim shoot down fighter jets without sophisticated equipment. and sophisticated training and that is coming from russia. >> vladimir putin and rebels at the scene are denying responsibility. across the globe, a call for justice for the 298 people on board hailing from at least 11 countries. we now know 83 children were on

board. the tragedy nearly too much for samantha power, the u.s. ambassador to the united nations. >> as we stared at the passenger list yesterday, we saw next to three of the passengers names, a capital i. as we now know, the letter i stands for infant. >> now, although they aren't expected to reveal very much, the location of those black boxes still remain as mystery. live in washington, kirk hawkins, abc7 news. katie. back to you. >> kirk, thank you. most of the passengers were dutch. the plane was flying from amsterdam to kuala lumpur in malaysia. 34 malaysians were on board. a third of them were airline employees. a group heading to an international aids conference in australia was also on the plane. former international aids society president yip lang was one of at least six delegates confirmed killed. not 100 as originally feared. several dozen ucsf researchers are attending the conference

which begins tomorrow. many say they knew lang personally. >> he is somebody that really was part of the glue to the larger community. brought people together, brought difficult issues to the table. >> organizers of tomorrow's aids walk in san francisco plan to honor the researchers who were killed. we will continue to follow this developing story on air and online. our coverage continues now on our website, abc7news.com. and on twitter. a san francisco start-up that's been targeted by a burglar is taking on the task of trying to catch the thief. the company buildzoom has provided pictures of the woman, who may be behind a series of break-ins. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has details. >> this is video given to us by buildzoom, you can see the burglar calmly walk into the office after hours. she gives the place a quick look, just to make sure no one is around, then she snags a bag from under a desk and starts digging through the office for stuff to snatch. >> they wanted all apple stuff.

they left pc desktops everywhere and laptops, if there was a little apple device, they grabbed it. >> the co-founder of buildzoom said their office building has been broken into three times in the last several weeks. >> it felt like an inside job, she had the key and they've been back. the first time they knew the alarm code. >> on the third break-in the upstairs neighbors, a company called fetch had seven laptops stolen. peterson decided to install a surveillance camera and this is the prowler they caught on video. after picking through the place for a few minutes an alarm goes off and the startled burglar high-tails it out. we checked with san francisco police and they didn't offer specifics on the break-in at buildzoom. they didn't say there's been any particular targeting of tech firms in the city. they did, however, note a recent increase in commercial burglaries. earlier this week, another start-up called demand local was also broken into on belden place in the financial district. it's not clear if the same person is responsible for all of

these incidents, but peterson is hoping to catch this burglar. he's posted a video on youtube. >> i just thought, it might be in the community of my followers, someone might have an idea who this person was. >> he's offering $1,000 to anyone who can identify her. in san francisco, sergio quintana, abc7 news. there will be a prayer service and a walk today at holy cross methodist church in stockton for the victims of a deadly bank robbery and shoot-out. this morning, we know the names of the suspects who were killed. 30-year-old gilbert renteria junior and 26-year-old alex gomez, both member were gang members with criminal records. the father of one men said police act the appropriately when they shot his son during the gun battle. police are searching for a fourth suspect, the driver who dropped the other three off at bank of the west before the robbery. the black sedan was found last night. the car was seen on surveillance video shortly before the

robbery. police say 41-year-old misty holt singh was used as a human shield during the shoot-out. her 12-year-old daughter was waiting for her back in their car at the bank. hope singh's son spoke to the media yesterday. >> wake up and i'm hoping that it's a dream and that that my mom is going to be there. but she's not and it sucks. >> police say 41-year-old, the family of holt singh is requesting to see video footage. hear audio recordings and view dispatch logs from the incident to find out who fired the shots that killed holt singh. a memorial fund has been set up for misty's family. nearly $6,000 has been raised online. you can find information about the fund on our website, abc7news.com. police in fremont have arrested three people in connection with a stabbing last week on fremont boulevard. 40-year-old paul fugundus,

20-year-old nicole garcia and 28-year-old juvenile are accused in the attack. the victim's ex-boyfriend admitted to police he paid the two to attack her. police have released more information about a woman accused of robbing an 8-year-old girl, she has been identified as 46-year-old ladonna christian. police arrested her, saying she stole from a little girl who was selling candy last monday. she was caught on surveillance video right before the incident. christian now booked for robbery, felony assault and willful cruelty to a child. former state assembly speaker john perez is out of the race for state scroll controller. he came in just 481 votes behind second-place finisher betty yee. last week his campaign requested a recount in 15 counties. the recount would have cost millions of dollars with perez footing the bill. yee will square off against ashley swearinggen, the republican mayor.

a san bruno bar has had its license suspended indefinitely because of frequent calls to the police department. the police department said they responded to an abnormally high number of calls from paper moon on san mateo avenue most of them due to violence. agents at the department of beverage control investigated before issuing the suspension. they say the frequent calls for police services caused a major drain on law enforcement. they also say the business operated in a disorderly fashion. well it's 8:09, the sun starting to come up. feels warmer already. i can tell from the inside. >> yes, we will see the sunshine. but there's a pretty deep marine layer out there from the live shot emeryville, you can see the clouds. so may take a little longer for the sun to beat through. i've slightly warmer numbers in some inland areas, i'll have that coming up. also next, some local heroes come to the rescue of a 97-year-old veteran evicted from his retirement home. what they did to help get him off the street and this rare

picture of the san mateo bridge. you can't see what's happening from here, but it's closest as we can get. we want to let you know about a serious traffic situation that happened a little after 7:30 this morning. it's on the southbound 101 connector ramp to 84 in san mateo county. all lanes are blocked on u.s. 101 to 84 connector because of an accident. so if you have to head that way, you're advised to expect delays, better yet, just avoid the area. there's no estimated time of opening, reopening the roadway. so try to keep you posted throughout the newscast and on twitter as well. israeli officials say the ground operation that started in gaza thursday could last as long as two weeks. thousands of israeli troops are looking for secret hamas tunnels in order to stop palestinian militants from launching more attacks on israel. gaza health officials say 325 palestinians have been killed by israeli air strikes and ground attacks. the vatican says pope

francis called israeli president simon perez and palestinian authority president, mahmoud abbas to express concern over the escalating conflict on the israeli/gaza border. according to a vatican statement, the pope reminded leaders about the need to bring an end to hostility and make efforts to promote truth and peace. nuclear talks between iran and six world powers have been extended until november 24th. the parties say their differences are too big to reach a deal before tomorrow's deadline. the biggest obstacle has been uranium enrichment, which can make reactor fuel and the core of a nuclear warhead. secretary of state john kerry says the talks so far have led to real progress, but there is more work to do. in napa, outraged advocates came to the aid of a 97-year-old veteran evicted from his senior home. he's in a new place this morning after temporarily living in a homeless shelter. abc7 news reporter allen wong has the story. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> it's 97-year-old jim

farrell's first night in his new senior home in napa after being homeless for the first time in his life. >> never in my life, none of my people, never. that's an undignified situation. >> farrell, who was a merchant marine in world war ii, korea and vietnam, was evicted from the redwood retirement residence in napa. he claims he was charged $1500 to clean list room, which caused him to miss his rent and said he was reprimanded for singing too much. >> it's a prohibitive situation. nobody can take that. >> i think because he liked to entertain the residents, they felt he was over-doing some of that a little bit. >> carol eldrige is with senior visionary services which helps the elderly find homes. when she found out farrell was in a homeless shelter, she and other senior advocates rallied around him and helped him find a new place. >> they just told him, you're out, you're on your own, good luck. >> representatives for the redwood retirement residence were unavailable to speak on

camera. but two employees tell me farrell was evicted because his sanitary habits were a health hazard to other residents. so he was given 30 days to leave. ♪ ♪ >> now eldrige says she and other outraged senior advocates plan on taking farrell's case up with the greater napa fair housing center. meanwhile, farrell will be entertaining a new audience at the pioneer's guest house. ♪ in napa, allen wong, abc7 news. happening today, the veterans administration hospital in palo alto is hosting a first of its kind event, hoping to provide veterans with health care and jobs. the v.a. will set up a mobile hospital much like a mash unit at deanza college. veterans can enroll in the system and get a wellness check. there will be a career fair with more than 75 employers. >> anybody who wants to get va health care can come in with no

what for? i don't know. i wonder what i look like. the uss hornet museum in alameda has nabbed aldrin for its anniversary festivities next saturday. the aircraft carrier recovered the apollo 11 crew from the pacific following splash-down. whale watchers caught an eyeful in the monterey bay yesterday. take a look at this, 10 humpbacked whales romping through the waves about a quarter mile from moth landing harbor. they've been there feasting on anchovies. whale experts say it's rare for them to come so close to shore. really neat to see the video. especially for those of us who can't be there in person. not that i'm sure i'd want to be as close as some of the people. >> that's pretty brave. and we're going to see the clouds like that. it's kind of gray right now. but that will change. live doppler 7 hd showing us the cloud cover. cutting through the marine layer at this point. but things, the sunshine will start to come through. at sfo, still 30-minute flight

arrival delays due to low clouds. temperatures right now mainly in the 60s, 61 in san francisco. oakland, san carlos and san jose at 64. gilroy 61. half moon bay 59 degrees. from emeryville. we look west to the clouds that are going to stay there throughout the day along the coast. santa rosa, 56. napa, 58. novato and fairfield, 61. and low 60s as well in concord and in livermore. so we head up to the east bay hills to be above those low clouds. as we see some blue skies and some high clouds that will be moving in. so here's your forecast for today. we've got the low clouds this morning, warmer temperatures in some inland locations. with high clouds moving in this afternoon, and then the humidity rising again tomorrow. to get ready for a muggy day. the water vapor imagery shows moisture in the upper levels of the atmosphere. so we've got an area of low pressure, with an air

circulating counterclockwise and high pressure clockwise rotation there. all helping to pull the moisture from the south and the moisture trapped back on and all coming from the gulf of california. so that's going to show up in our area in the form of high clouds this afternoon. so filtered sunshine for saturday and then notice increasing clouds into tomorrow where we will have some very muggy conditions sunday. and even better chances of drizzle sunday morning, especially near the coast. highs today pretty warm, in the south bay, 81 in san jose, 87 in morgan hill. 77 in milpitas, and look for some upper 70s through menlo park, palo alto, 80 in redwood city, pacifica, very mild at 65. downtown san francisco with the partly cloudy conditions and 67 degrees. in the north bay, 7 no sausalito. 75 in petaluma. low 80s in sonoma and napa and mid 90s in ukiah and lakeport.

comfortable in the east bay and mild, 70 in berkeley. 73 in san leandro. upper 70s in some locations. castro valley getting close, 76. inland areas is where we come up a few degrees. almost 90 in some locations like brentwood, antioch, 88. 85 in pittsburg, 84 in pleasanton. and if you're headed to the a's game tonight, it will be mild. 64 degrees when the game starts at 6:05. it cools down to near 60 degrees, about 61. so we've got the high clouds this afternoon. slightly warmer numbers inland and we only come down about a couple of degrees for sunday. but the humidity rises. temperatures hold steady for the givening part of the work week and warming up for thursday and friday into the low 90s inland. mid 80s around the bay and even upper 60s along the coast. so it will be above average at that point. we'll let you know how warm it's

after 60 years, villa romano restaurant is call it quits this weekend. antonio ricardo opened the place in 1955. back then it was one of the few restaurants on irving street in the inner sunset. but the two are in their 70s and they decided it was time to retire. the accordo kids don't work at the restaurant, so there was no one to continue at the business.

the family said it will miss the regular customers. >> i say close to 70% of our customers are repeat customers that have been coming since the beginning. either grandparents or grandkids. >> the restaurant will stay open until tomorrow night so get in there while you can. the owners say they will keep serving food until all of the customers are gone. their team mascots and their name headlines huge hollywood blockbusters, but wolverines are not mythical figures. this is what they look like in real life. two wolverines made their debut yesterday at the san francisco zoo. the wolverines live in cold climates so they love the cool, coastal weather and the younger one enjoyed the bed of ice set up there. so what about the reputation of being ferocious? >> they are fearless, really. they will stand down grizzly bears, they will stand down wolves. for competition for food. ♪ ♪ >> university of michigan alumni

welcome back, we're in the seconds away from 8:30 and starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather, here's meteorologist frances lawson in for lisa this morning. >> we're mostly under gray skies, low clouds and temperatures in the 60s, 64 in oakland and in san jose. still upper 50s in parts of the north bay like napa. dy want to show you some sunshine that's heading our way. live shot from san jose. you can see some of the blue skies, we'll get some more filtered sunshine this afternoon. inland areas coming up a few degrees. so we'll be reaching the upper 80s today, slightly warmer. along the coast and in san francisco, temperatures will be near the mid 60s. and then around the bay, look for some sunshine this afternoon as well. a mix of some clouds, temperatures in the 70s. now humidity will be increasing. especially for tomorrow. i'll have that and your accuweather seven-day forecast.

president obama plans to sign executive orders on monday. banning discrimination against gay and transgender workers in the federal government and its contracting agencies. there will not be an exemption for religious organizations. this follows the supreme court's recent ruling that some religiously oriented businesses can opt out of the federal health care law's rimt for contraception coverage. california farmers have received another infusion of cash from the federal government to deal with the drought. u.s. agricultural secretary tom vilsack visited a county yesterday to announce $9 million in new aid. the white house has pledged $50 million to help california get through a third straight drought year. 57 of 58 california counties are federal disaster areas, and that makes farmers and ranchers eligible for emergency loans. drought or no doubt, california firefighters say they're still a long way to go before fire season will be over. and they're urging people to be

careful when they're outside. especially with camp fires and power tools because of the high fire risk. >> we're well ahead of schedule with our what we call our fuel drying out so all the grasses and the trees are struggling in the drought conditions. state wide with the drought conditions, everything is ripe to burn and unfortunately we have to keep a close eye on everything. >> crews report the bully fire in shasta county is now 56% contained. the flames have burned more than 12,600 acres. 18 people have been hurt. the fire has destroyed 18 buildings. investigators believe the fire was started by a marijuana grower's truck. a massive wildfire that destroyed 100 homes in washington state is forcing the residents two of more communities to leave their home. authorities say the towns of malotte and brewster northeast of seattle have been evacuated. the fire has burned more than

168,000 acres. having swept through the town of patero thursday. no injuries have been reported. [ screaming ] >> students scream as part of a drill. first responders arrive, so do the police. it was quite dramatic yesterday at a joint training exercise for possible intruders at quinata college in redwood city. police and firefighters took part in the drill held by the san mateo county sheriff. abc7 news reporter vic lee has more. >> the movie, fittingly is called "the predator." those in the theater are role-players. suddenly an intruder begins firing into the crowd. people are wounded, some are dead. >> one here, running to the college. possible one officer down. >> the first cops to respond to

are called the contact team. the second group is the rescue team, the ones to guide firefighters and emts to the scene and begin securing the areas of the theater. in another part of the building, the contact team has killed three intruders. the second group fans out through the theater to see if other shooters are still here. after they determine there are no others, fire and paramedics are allowed in to treat the wounded. time is of the essence. that's what this training is all about. >> we waited until everything cooled down and we bring in, too long. people are bleeding now. >> police learned a lot from columbine. medics and firefighters waited until police gave them an okay to go in. today, they practice something called force protection. battalion chief david pucci says they no longer wait for police to secure the entire area.

>> we'll enter a building working with law enforcement to secure that scene inside the building. while they're still actually dealing with the active shooter. >> for police, the training gives them another perspective. >> when you bring in fire and ems, it's a whole 'nother dynamic we're not used to seeing. >> the goal is do get police, fire and medical services on the same page the next time they confront an active shooter. vic lee, abc7 news. lake tahoe wildlife center is packed with orphaned bear cubs right now. the most they've ever had this early in the summer. the cubs are getting great care, but no one knows why there are so many orphans. here's abc7 news news anchor sheryl jennings. >> there are nine orphaned bear cubs at lake tahoe wildlife care. the only place in california licensed to care for them and they just keep coming. >> it's been nonstop the last month. >> this is the newest arrival named brockway. about to get a sedative so the vet can give him a full medical exam. brockway was found near his

mother's body north of lake tahoe. a good samaritan left him with a note and a volunteer organization called the bear league. the state fish and wildlife department gave the okay to transport him to the wildlife center. >> a little thin and lethargic. >> brockway is getting some fluids and his prognosis is good. the wildlife center is run by tom and sheryl millhan who is have been caring for bear cubs the last 14 years. the bears here now are all five to six months old from all over the state. this summer more bears than usual are showing up in populated areas. because of the drought. but there's no way to know whether that's why so many orphaned bears have been found. >> we just haven't learned to talk bear yet. >> we introduced you to the first orphaned cub of the season last april. she was just five pounds and had to be bottle fed. the goal with all the cubs is to release them into the wild. so now, three months later, she's not getting any human contact. we did get a peek at her, through a window.

she's up to more than 20 pounds, but still has not cozied up to the other cubs. >> we're still working with that and hopefully she'll come around. >> for the rest of the bears it's actually a good thing to have so many here at once. >> it's great. they get to interact with each other, they get to play with each other. they get to fight with each other. they get to determine who's the boss. >> most of the cubs are in good shape. but this little one had some serious tooth problems we she arrived. she had to have surgery and is being monitored with a video camera while she recovers. >> she's acting normally. she's eating most of the foods that we're putting in there, but we're on soft foods right now. >> food is one of the biggest concerns for the wildlife center right now. >> as the summer goes on and their appetites get more and more as they get bigger, it will cost us about $100 per bear per week. >> the cubs get high-quality fresh food so they learn to eat a natural diet. they won't be big enough to be released until winter and the food bill will just keep going up.

this is abc7 news. several marin county restaurants are suing the u.s. interior department in an effort to save drake's bay oyster company. the lawsuit claims former interior secretary ken salazar violated he federal law when is he declined to extend drake's bay lease. he said the closure hurts businesses because restaurants will lose access to locally harvested oysters, drake's bay announced plans to shut down at the end of the month after the supreme court refused to hear

right hardware. but there's something else that does. first responders use high-powered two-way radios with long antennas. >> walkie-talkies are a very resilient technology. >> so she took the guts of an old vhf radio and stuffed them into this tiny package called go-tenna. >> five inches long and weighs under two ounces. >> no speaker, no microphone. it's not for talking. it's for texting. >> the entire idea is that this is supposed to work exactly the way you would you your phone normally. >> it acts a a relay, you type a message on your phone, send it here via bluetooth this sends it to somebody up to miles away. >> it's definitely in cases for a lot of people that do outdoor activities. >> skiers and hikers could snap it up on preorder, $150 for two of them. it's sold in pairs because one won't do you any good. you can only communicate with another person who has a go-tenna. in the wilderness, the signal

santa rosa. 92 in fairfield. 93 in san jose. and 94% along the coast humidity. and tomorrow it's going to be higher, i'll explain shortly. from emeryville looking out to the low clouds, bay bridge and san francisco. temperatures in the 60s right now. san francisco 61. 64 oakland. san carlos and san jose, gilroy, 62, half moon bay, 59 degrees. from the exploratorium, we show you calm waters over the bay and more great clouds behind and above the bay bridge. currently 56 in santa rosa. and a lot of low 60s through napa, novato, fairfield, concord and livermore at 64 degrees. from the east bay hills, we can see some clearing through some parts of the inland areas, mount diablo in the background. so low clouds this morning, warmer temperatures today and some inland areas, high clouds moving in this afternoon and then humidity rises again on sunday.

the water vapor image shows you moisture in the upper levels. the green shows you more moisture and with the air circulation around the low and also around the high. it's going to pull the moisture from the gulf of california, so the moisture taps back on. we'll see it in the form of high clouds passing through this afternoon. so some filtered sunshine today. increasing clouds overnight. into tomorrow. where it will be fairly muggy as well, especially during the morning where we could get better chances of more drizzle. and also, for the aids walk, you may need a windbreaker, an extra layer due to the drizzle. 9:00, cloudy, near 60 degrees, 11:00, more sunshine and temperatures coming up to 63. then 64 for the afternoon with some muggy and partly cloudy conditions. it's going to be very pleasant in the south bay. look for highs of 79 in santa clara. 80 in cupertino. pretty warm in morgan hill at 87 degrees. upper 70s to near 80, redwood

city in los at 0s at 80. 73 in millbrae. downtown san francisco, 67 for all the events today. 77 in novato. low 80s through sonoma and napa and the east bay is going to be pretty pleasant. hayward, 72, i'll be there this afternoon for the filipino women's network event at the southland mall. 72 in oakland. 76 in castro valley. look for temperatures to be close to 90 brentwood, 88 in antioch. low 80s as well. concord at 83, 84 in pleasanton. and also overnight lows will be in the upper 50s to low 60s once again with that extra cloud cover. high clouds this afternoon, slightly warmer inland numbers. and then muggy conditions tomorrow. so get ready for that temperatures hold steady through the beginning part of the work week. before thursday and friday where we see the low 90s inland, mid 80s around the bay and even
