safeway, ingredients for life. >> i'm praying and hoping that we can make a change. >> calls for an end to violence an crime in stockton tonight. family, friends and an entire community turn out for a woman killed during a bank robbery last week. good evening. misty was one of three people taken hostage during the bank robbery. she was killed as a suspect used her as a shield during a shootout with police. we are joined live with more. >> reporter: we are back at the bank where people are still dropping off candles, letters, playing music. even at this hour, this is a

grieving city of 300,000 people and many came out to support the family of misty. >> many of the more than 500 at this vigil were in a state of shock after a bank robbery, chase and shootout that ended in the death of 40-year-old hostage. she was well known for her kindness. >> i'm at a loss of words. i can't begin for how thankful i am for everyone here. >> >> reporter: her sister has questions for the surviving two hostages. >> what happened, what was misty saying, what were the last words misty said? >> reporter: misty's step father couldn't help but mention the city's battle with crime. >> i'm hoping and praying our ed pd can get it together with the state or whoever and get some funds to help us out.

>> reporter: police say all three suspects, two who were killed in the gun fight, were members of a street gang. >> we don't have enough resources. we are joining forces with the fbi, homeland security, various state task force to really combat these gangsters. there's so many of them. >> reporter: meanwhile the family is searching for answers from police about misty's death that ended in a hail of gun fire between police and the suspects. in stockton, abc 7 news. an effort to pay for her funeral expenses is gaining support her husband works at a car dealership in pittsburgh. they started a fund hoping to raise $10,000 and they have raised already $7500 for paul and his kids. >> holding up the best he can n. this kind of situation, how can you? but for his kids and family he's staying strong.

>> co-workers say they are overwoem welled to see donations come from strangers across the country. tonight we are hearing from the long-time girlfriend of one of the suspects killed. renteria junior and martinez died in the shootout with police. a third suspect was arrested on scene, ramos. the girlfriend of 11 years and mother of his children expressed her sorrow for killed hostage's family. >> breaks my heart they lost -- that he lost his wife. they lost their mother because my kid lost their father. i can comprehend on that, you know? >> reporter: police are still searching for the driver of this car discovered four miles from the scene of the crime. surveillance cameras caught all three suspects that robbed the bank. bar officer and paramedics were called to the san leandro

b.a.r.t. station. police arrested one person but didn't say why. the chp is searching for the driver of a motorcycle involved in a high-speed chase. offic offices clocked him at speeds of 138 miles an hour. the man ditched his bike in front of a gas station. tonight the state department says the u.s. is concerned that separatists in ukraine are refusing to allow access to the area where the plane was shot down with 300 people on board. >> today the focus was on collecting bodies. volunteers dug up, bagged and trucked away the remains of some of the 298 victims. they will be brought to a morgue in a stronghold for pro russia rebels. they have controlled the area where the plane crashed after

shotdown on thursday. abc's terry moran is on the scene and said a few locals formed an unofficial perimeter around the wreckage but no professional aircraft investigators in charge. >> a few feet off the road, one of the wings came down in this field. it is outrageous we can get this close. this is evidence, completely unsecured. the ukrainian government accused the rebels of removing bodies from the crash site. a charge one of their leaders denied. >> bodies. >> officials say they have evidence the missile that brought down mh17 came from russia. so do the troops that fired it. >> it was russian. they were russian citizens. and they came from territory of

russian federation together with the missile launcher. >> reporter: today secretary of state john kerry told russia, it needs to take immediate action to reduce tensions in ukraine, including telling pro-russia rebels to put down their weapons. karen travers, abc news, washington. coming up, we will hear from families of the victims and the remarkable stories of survival from people who were supposed to be on that plane. the annual aids walk san francisco is tomorrow. the event is a few days after top aids researchers were killed on malaysia flight 17. melissa hairington has more on the special plans to honor those lost. >> reporter: the stage is set for tomorrow's aids walk where 20,000 people are expected to show up. this year's event is dedicated to those who died from the disease an those researchers

aboard the doomed malaysia airlines flight. >> the researchers that lost their lives are heros to us. >> reporter: the founder of aids walk with san francisco says the event is always emotional. in the opening ceremony they remember those lost to the disease. tomorrow they will honor a group of aids and hiv researchers who died on malaysia flight 17. this includes the former president of the international aid society. >> i think the loss of those great pioneering researchers that we will be acknowledging tomorrow will be part of the overall emotion. >> mayor ed lee will make some remarks followed by a moment of silence. the executive director of project inform, the lead beneficiary of sunday's aid walk plans to speak. >> i think everybody is struck by the terrible irony of losing people who are trying to do so much good in the world to an act of such unnecessary violence. >> reporter: walkers will be encouraged to stop in golden

wildfires in washington state this several directions. the c-130 tankers will arrive tomorrow from the national guard. the fires burning in the central part of the state destroyed at least 100 homes and forced more evacuations. so far, nearly 340 square miles have burned. the state's drought will only get worse as the summer continues. that's the word from the national drought mitigation center at the university of nebraska. they say 81% of our state is in extreme drought, making it harder to break the cycle. the climate map was based on weather patterns and soil activity. in los angeles, homeowners are keeping lawns green through the drought by dyeing it. there are professional lawn painters who will match a lawn's color and paint on a coat. they say it is cheaper than rising water bills and the threat of a fine if you water too much. half a dozen people in santa

clara joined a protest against immigration reform. the group says it's concerned about what they say is the government's failure to secure our borders. >> twr >> i don't think the government is taking the right approaches with immigration and letting people right over the border. they should be collecting them and bringing them back where they came from to discourage future people from coming here. >> reporter: others believe the u.s. make take a humanitarian approach when it comes to immigration law and border patrol, especially when children are involved. firefighters to the rescue in new york but it's not what you may think. these firefighters help to chase down a thief. a robber snatched the purse out of a woman's hand. firefighters saw it happened and refused to let the criminal get away. >> i was nervous because i didn't know what to say on the radio. i put the lights on, went down

look at live doppler. certainly picking up returns. a lot of our wonderful twitter followers have said they have seen sprinkles on their window. we are looking at monsoonal moisture starting to trickle in over the bay area. we are seeing it not too measurable. we need the moisture. really need the rain. as we look at this map, we have this moisture, this plume coming in from the southeast and bearing down on the bay area right now with the high pressure behind it. currently over the four corner states. it will eventually bring us heat next week. i will have more on that in just a moment. as we look to the transamerica pyramid in the financial district in san francisco, looks like gotham with the fog starting to cover the building tops and the search lights there. it is interesting. beautiful shot. current conditions in san francisco, in the mid-60s.

a. good evening. in tonight's headlines, officers are investigating an assault on a b.a.r.t. train tonight. police were looking for two people who ran off the train when it stopped in san leandro. one person was arrested but police officers wouldn't say why. police are looking for the driver of a motorcycle who led them on a high-speed chase. it sped down from 880 from oakland to heyward. he ditched his bike at a gas station and ran off. thousands gathered to remember misty. the family thanked the public for its support and hope police can control crime in the city. now the latest on the investigation in to the downing of malaysia airlines flight 17.

caffeine is the main draw for die-hard coffee drinkers. a warning from the fda about a new form of the stimtlanlt has proven deadly. it is caffeine powder. it is extremely poe tent and can be purchased on-line. one teaspoon equals 25 cups of coffee. doctors say just a small amount could be fatal. it is blamed for the death of this 18-year-old ohio athlete from ohio. a coroner found 23 times the amount of caffeine in his body than that of a typical coffee drinker. >> take too much of this and it is truly toxic, you will get disoriented, irregular heart beat and says seizures and could lead to death sglit is marketed as a diet supplement so it

doesn't face regulations like food. they are considering regulatory action. a cutting-edge surgery we profiled is now almost routine at one bay area hospital. as abc 7 news anchor cheryl jennings shows us it is bringing relief to patients whose conditions are so severe it can disrupt their lives. >> when we first met monika, she had been experienced severe epileptic seizures much of her adult life. >> my heart is racing like crazy and i black out. >> the device is implanted in to a small dent in the skull that we create. >> reporter: a small implantable device would improve her symptoms dramatically. she became an early patient in a clinical trial at california pacific medical center. the device is an electroning stimulater that can read signals in the brain that perceive an
