weather causing everything from flooding rains to dry and dangerous heat. in parts of the east coast, people are drying out this morning following a day of torrential downpours. >> while in the west, windy and dry weather have created ripe conditions for wildfires. fast-moving flames wiping out entire neighborhoods. four fires in north central washington coming together as one burning 380 square miles, more than four times the size of seattle. >> this fire, as i'm sure you guys know, just exploded. >> there are still lots of homes threatened, not imminently. >> reporter: new video by drones showing the widespread damage. warren smethers lost his dream home that he purchased just three weeks ago. >> i just try to keep looking on the positive side. i've been in tears. >> reporter: temperatures have cooled helping the 1600 firefighters, but no rain is expected in the area until tomorrow. in north dakota fargo feels more like florida with temperatures soaring into the 90s.

as the sun set, the heat and humidity fueling fast-moving and damaging storms. this picture posted on social media overnight showing the floods on the university of north dakota's campus. on the east coast, the sound of thunder rocking communities in north carolina. torrential rains and flash flooding causing serious problems, and lightning damaging at least one home. and some of that severe weather will continue to make its way out east. thunderstorms are expected from maryland and virginia up into the northeast. gusty winds and downpours in much of the southeast, extremely hot in the desert southwest, well into the triple digits. >> and triple digits, 111 in phoenix. just shy of the triple digits in salt lake city, albuquerque and dallas. 70s in the pacific northwest fire zone. 80s in los angeles, miami, minneapolis and boston. the other major story we're following is the investigation into the malaysia air crash. investigators now have the plane's black boxes. >> and this morning, australian prime minister tony abbott

claims russian rebels have tampered with evidence and says a cover-up is under way at the site. abc's tahman bradley is joining us with more from washington. tahman, good morning. >> reporter: reena and ryan, good morning. after days of what many people thought was a despicable scene, the rebels guarding the dead bodies, scouring the wreckage, investigators arrived. finally, investigators gained access to the debris site, and finally pro-russian rebels handed over the black boxes. >> i can see that the black box is intact even though a little bit damaged, in good condition. >> reporter: but the forensics team on site faces enormous challenges, poring over debris scattered across a 13-square-mile site that's already been compromised. >> it is inevitably the case that some of the important evidence that would have been available initially will have already been lost simply because of the way the crash site has been treated. >> reporter: under the watch of armed rebels, most of the dead bodies were hauled away yesterday in this

refrigerated train headed for the rebel stronghold of kharkiv. from there the bodies will be flown home. president obama upped the pressure on russian president putin to rain in the rebels. >> to insist the separatists stop tampering with the evidence. >> reporter: russia continues to deny any involvement in the disaster. they say a ukraine su bomber was near there and could have shot it down. u.s. officials call that nonsense. russian media are spreading theories that perhaps ukraine shot down the plane because it thought the jet was president putin's official aircraft or that flight 17 was actually full of already dead bodies. >> whenever they're caught with their hand in the cookie jar, they make up lots of lies to confuse people. >> reporter: european leaders are warning putin will face hard-hitting sanctions if he doesn't fully cooperate with the investigation. ryan and reena. >> and some europeans actually looking into those sanctions. tahman bradley live in washington, thanks so much. more death and destruction in the middle east overnight as the fighting rages on between israel and hamas.

police in gaza say israel has bombed five mosques and a football stadium. huge explosions could be seen across the night sky as israel hit more than 70 targets. so far more than 580 palestinians and 27 israeli soldiers have been killed. these latest attacks followed deadly shelling yesterday at a hospital in central gaza. four people were killed and dozens more injured. a chaotic scene as ambulances tried to evacuate patients while others rushed to the -- rushed the wounded to the emergency room, and palestinian families were also buried in the rubble when an air strike hit a high-rise tower in gaza. now, secretary of state john kerry is in egypt this morning stepping up calls for a cease-fire, but he acknowledged that at some point they must discuss the underlying issues and differences between israel and hamas. kerry also announced nearly $50 million in humanitarian aid to help palestinians displaced by the fighting. the white house says the

number of unaccompanied minors crossing the border is dropping significantly, but texas governor rick perry is still sending a thousand national guard troops to the area, says he's had enough, quote, lip service and empty promises from washington. critics point out the guard can't make arrests, but perry says they're a visual deterrent. >> to be a force multiplier, to be there as a partner with the law enforcement. >> i don't see the national guard being of particularly good help in this instance. >> president obama plans to meet friday with the presidents of guatemala, el salvador and honduras, three countries that are home to many of the children. detroit appears a step closer from emerging from the largest municipal bankruptcy in u.s. history. workers and retirees have approved cuts to their pension and the vote was a vital part of the bankruptcy plan which still must be approved by a federal judge in a trial that starts next month.

johns hopkins has agreed to pay $190 million to thousands of women and girls who were secretly recorded during their pelvic exams. investigators say that gynecologist dr. nikita levy used tiny hidden cameras to make the recordings. they say he sometimes violated hospital policy by didding young girls without having a nurse present. >> president obama has moved to protect more lgbt employees from workplace discrimination. at the white house yesterday, he signed an executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discrimination on the basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity. mr. obama took the action because a bill to ban such discrimination across the country is stalled in congress. also at the white house, the president presented the medal of honor to a former army staff sergeant ryan pitts. in a 2008 battle in afghanistan, pitts was wounded, and nine of his comrades were killed, but despite his wounds, pitts fought off a taliban attack and guided in air strikes to repel the attackers. he called those who died that day the real heroes.

welcome back. good times for netflix. the video streaming service says its profits more than doubled in the second quarter, and it now has more than 50 million

subscribers worldwide. one reason is its original programming like "orange is the new black." netflix is already the biggest stand-alone subscription the company has ordered 70 million to 80 million larger screens for the next version of its iphone. that's significantly more than the initial order for the last iphone. gas prices keep heading downward. the energy department says a gallon costs an average of $3.59, four cents less than a week ago. aaa's gas survey shows about the same decrease and says prices have fallen every day for more than three weeks. and sales at chipotle restaurants are soaring. second quarter sales up more than 17% compared to this time last year. its net income and revenue were both up more than 25%, and chipotle opened 45 restaurants last quarter. all of this without any new

special menu items. chipotle says millennials just like healthier food and modest prices. and "iron man," solid good. robert downey jr. tops the "forbes" list of highest paid actors for the second year in a row. he made an estimated $75 million in the past year. after starring in four of marvel's biggest films, that's the haul that he has. now, dwayne "the rock" johnson is second with $52 million. number three, bradley cooper at $46 million. leonardo dicaprio is fourth. chris hemsworth from "thor" fame is fifth. >> but for us journalists that's just chump change. >> yeah, well, for you. when we come back, sudden impact and explosion. a train smashes into a semi. the mistake investigators say the truck driver made. and caught on camera. a road rage incident in the middle of a busy street. ♪

it was a wild night in parts of north dakota. take a look at these eerie scenes captured on camera. that's rain coming down near bismarck and getting blown across the area by 75-mile-an-hour winds. now for a look at morning road conditions, a wet and windy commute for drivers from wisconsin and the great lakes. slick at times in the mid-atlantic and the southeast. scattered showers could make for a slippery ride in the pacific northwest and northern rockies. and it looks like a good day for flying. weather-related airport delays are expected only in chicago. well, disturbing news this morning about the florida law professor who was shot and killed. it wasn't a random act of violence. police say dan markel was the intended victim. >> nor do they believe his murder was connected to a burglary or a robbery, but the cops say they don't know why markel opened his door to whoever shot him or why. now, he was shot -- or why he was shot, in fact.

much more on this story coming up on "good morning america." now, to the investigation into the death of a new york man locked in an apparent choke hold by a police officer. four paramedics who were initially placed on modified duty are now suspended without pay. they responded to the scene after eric garner was confronted by officers, wrestled to the ground and heard saying that he couldn't breathe. the officer seen with his airports around garner's neck has been reassigned. a family in new hampshire says they are the happiest people on earth this morning. that's because 15-year-old abigail hernandez is safe at home again nine months after she disappeared while on her way home from school. during her time away, police reveal that she had written do her family, which led authorities to say it was possible that abigail ran away. a criminal investigation into the case will continue. a jetblue pilot is free on his own recognizance this morning after being arrested in a heroin bust. it happened in boston. 42-year-old john manwaring was arrested sunday along with several others including an

an alleged prostitute and drug offender. the pilot landed in boston just hours earlier, but it's not clear if he flew the plane or was a passenger. manwaring pleaded not guilty to a heroin possession charge, and jetblue has removed him from duty. he'll be back in court in a few weeks. a man in san diego has posted a video showing what he says is an extreme case of road rage. it all started when he changed lanes pulling in front of a black pickup truck. the driver blows the horn then switches lanes, and when they get to a red light, he starts throwing coins. >> i hear something, bing, and i'm going, what was that? you know, and a few seconds later, i hear another one. >> then a woman gets out of the passenger seat, takes a picture of his license plate and launches a verbal tirade. the guy who posted the video says he did it to shame the woman and other drivers. a death-defying accident captured on camera in kentucky. a fiery crash between a train and a tractor trailer. bad enough the train slammed into the semi, but the truck happened to be loaded with lighter fluid at the time, and

you see the explosion right there. it bursts into a huge fireball releasing smoke that could be seen for miles. amazingly, the truck driver survived, and no one else was hurt. all right. now for some lighter fare in the form of this morning's sports highlights. >> you know, i still miss the world cup, but this morning it's all about baseball. here's our guy at espn. good morning. welcome to our "sportscenter" set here in los angeles. i'm stan verrett. let's get you caught up on some of the action from the ballparks from monday night. david ortiz said he felt like he was about to get hotter than jamaica in the middle of august and then he delivered on that promise against the blue jays. off brad mills, 425 feet, ortiz's 21st of the year. two-run shot. top five, guess who? guess what? off mills again. another two-run shot. the red sox had plenty. they win it, 14-1. ortiz with 22 on the year now. there's all sorts of logjams in the national league. marlins and braves from atlanta.

we have a fatal accident 101 in sunnyvale between a big rig and motorcyclist. katie marzullo is on the scene. >> we have one lane closed. this is what is happening: on the back of the flatbed tow truck is the motorcycle, the person who was killed was riding. the body has been removed. you can see c.h.p. is investigating exactly what happened. we understand the motorcyclist crashed into the back of a big rig and there could be three or four other vehicles involved. they could have run over the body after the accident. how did this happen? witnesses say the motorcyclist was speeding. >>enses put the evening, the motorcyclist, at high speeds possibly
