of the storm. weird this time of year. >> yeah, it definitely caught people by surprise. even though nobody was hurt, residents tell me they're shocked by how powerful and brief this storm was. >> huge noise. like an explosion. and it shook the house and rattled the windows. >> lightning, thunder and a downpour. weather rumbled through and jolted people out of bed. >> i was having a wonderful dream and a boom interrupted me. >> reporter: a lightning strike split a redwood tree and sent branches flying. debris cracked some windows and damaged her fence. >> i've been here 36 years. i've never had any kind of damage like this. so i was amazed. >> bill o'brien was getting ready to take a shower. >> i saw flames and i heard a

noise. and i didn't know what happened. i thought a propane tank. it sounded like a bomb went off. >> reporter: he showed me this picture of the burnt tile. the rain is welcomed relief for firefighters. marin county fire responded to several strikes, one that sent a tree up in flames. >> they saw some smoke affiliated with the lightning strike that was on the ridge line. >> reporter: the national weather service reported at least 25 lightning strikes in the bay area overnight, a rare july storm. >> and to this have one with that bolt and magnitude. i'm sure it's a once in several years phenomenon. >> let's check in with meteorologist sandhya patel. nice to see the rain. >> it was definitely nice to see it, dan and cheryl, especially in the middle of a detroit.

right now skies are half and half. clouds and sun. i do want to talk about the rain that fell and how much we got. a few clouds right now but a very quiet picture. most of that rain arrived as you were sleeping. thunderstorms developed along the coast and then moved towards marin. look at the lightning bolts. during the commute. still thunderstorms and we did measure rainfall. .2 in half-moon bay. livermoor 0.1 inch. we are going to see a big switchup in our pattern. i'll be back with those details in just a few minutes. dan? >> okay, we'll see you soon. in november, san francisco will

vote on a measure to tax sugary drinks. that's after the board of supervisors decided to place it on the ballot. the hope is to make people, especially teenagers think twice about what they drink. leann is live at city hall today. the beverage association is certainly going to put up a fight. >> reporter: that's right, dan. and other cities, in fact, have tried this and the beverage industry has always won every time. if it passes, woe would add an additional two pennies per ounce. so take for example, a can of coke. that's 12 ounces. a can of 7-up, pepsi. 12 ounces. that can would now cost you an additional 24 cents. this 20-ounce sugary drink is $2. if san francisco were to add a special tax it would cost you an additional 40 cents.

of the san francisco economist. he's one of the authors o f the measure. he and others attending this rally at city hall believe adding this tax would discourt and jury people from buying soft drinks, especially younger people who don't have a steady stream of money. if it passes, the city could collect up to $50 million. money that would go to support underfunded programs like school lunches, physical education, and after-school programs. supporters of the tax proposal say it would also improve the city's health and reduce the number of cases of diabetes. >> that's exactly what we saw happen with tobacco. and that is the way that you then cut it out. >> diabetes is a serious disease. if it's going to health the world be healthier, then yeah,

you should tax it. >> the industry association says when putting it directly to the voters, the tax will go down in defeat. kurt nichol is a vender. he says americans are obsessed with sugar. >> no, i mean, it should be like better education for people about what's good for them. >> san francisco supervisors are not the only ones pushing for this tax. berkeley residents will vote on a similar measure in november. in san francisco for abc 7 news. a san francisco recology truck driver got a surprise when he discovered a man trapped in the back of his truck. a man was sleeping in a dumpster full of cardboard set to be recycled. unfortunately for him today was pick-up day. the driver did not know he had dumped a man into the back of his truck until he heard a very strange sound. >> it was an unusual sound. and he yelled out, and then the

person yelled back. so there was a verbal communication and the man who was in the dumpster. >> the driver drove to the fire station a few blocks away and asked for help. the man trapped inside the truck injured his shoulder and was taken to the hospital. firefighters say the man could have been killed if the driver had not hurt him in time. and now to the crisis in the middle east. a federal aviation administration is prohibiting all u.s. flights to tel aviv for now after a rocket from gaza landed near israel's international airport. nick? >> absolutely, we've been following the information provided by the faa and i can tell you that the number of airlines canceling flights to tel aviv continues to grow. >> the united flight was canceled. >> leslie is listing off the growing number of flight

cancellations affecting the tel aviv airport. >> the airlines canceled a lot of flights into tel aviv today. that's out of our hand. >> this morning delta canceled flights from new york and says it will suspend service until further notice. soon after, other carriers followed. ending travel plans for hundreds. leslie spent the better part of her day trying to accommodate clients that have been told they can't fly to israel at the height of the summer travel seaso season. >> first thing i did is called u.s. air. zblcht the faa issued a 24-hour ban to and from tel aviv after a rocket landed near the airport, causing some international travelers to think twice about where they will spend their summer. >> they appreciate the efforts to keep them safe, but says it won't interrupt their plans to travel abroad. >> it becomes a roll over situation. and then you're backed up and maybe don't get out until next

week. >> the faa says they will continue to monitor the situation and updated instructions will be provided to the airlines as soon as conditions permit. nick smith, abc 7 news. u.s. intelligence officials say there's no direct evidence linking the russian government with the crash of malaysia airlines flight 17. they say the jet was likely shot down by separatists who misread radar images. intelligence officials don't know if any russians were present or if the missile crew was trained in russia. today president obama offered his condolences to the families of the victims. >> we will work with them to make sure loved ones are recovered. that a proper investigation is ukted and justice is done. >> a train carries the remains of the victims arrived in ukraine after being held up by rebels in a conflict zone since the crash.

the bodies will be sent to the netherlands for identification. there's an update now for breaking news in san francisco. we are told a woman was shot inside her home this afternoon. now we are told the white car you see in the forefront to the white of the scene was somehow involved, but we're not sure how. we also know there are shuttles in place along the rail line in that area to help commuters get around and a avoid the investigation. we'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available and on twitter. well, good news finally. after four days with no running water, residents of an upscale apartment complex can now shower and use their toilets again. crewed turned water back on t

oakland. >> we look forward to staying in alameda county as we finalize the deal to keep our team in oakland, to preserve over 1,000 jobs tied to the sports team and to build a future. >> earlier they released this statement. we appreciate the kopgs of city officials in the process and are optimistic that our negotiations have led to a fair and mutually again official relationship. that said, city officials acknowledged they still do not have any signed paperwork from the a's. but they say the deal calls for a ten-year lease extension at the o.co coliseum. and $20 million in revenue to the city. a $1.6 million personality if they break the loose and a good faith agreement to try a build a new stadium for the a's in oakland. >> i think we're going to get

. happening tonight, president obama is set to arrive in the bay area in just a few hours from now to raise money for the democratic national committee. he spent part of the day fund raising in seattle and is expected to arrive just after 9:00 tonight. he's going to spend the night in the bay area and will attend an event tomorrow at the los altos home of real estate mogul.

tickets include a photo and a lunch. the nonprofit group good will is working with the secret service to investigate a possible security breach. they were contacted by investigators on friday including federal authorities that said payment card numbers may have been stolen from stores. they are working with credit card makers and other agencies to figure out whether a breach did o kaur. they operate more than 2,900 stores across the country. we're getting new details on a smart watch that apple is developing. a patent was approved today. the patent includes the watch -- indicates the watch would include a removable device that works when it's not attached to the wristband itself. in one design, the word i time is written on its face.
