george. a grim week in aviation with what appears to be another tragedy. here's what we know at this point from africa. an air algiers flight from burkina faso, algeria lost contact from controllers and has disappeared from radar. the aircraft was md-83 that was being operated by a spanish company for air algiers and on first report, a total of 116 people on board. the breakdown, 110 passengers and a crew of 6. that's from the spanish company operating the jet but air algiers said there were 119 people on board. the jet was 50 minutes into its flight when contact was lost. it was flying basically as you saw a south to north route from that small african nation to algiers, the capital of algeria. there was bad weather along the four-hour route and the jetliner may have run into a violent thunderstorm about 50 minutes in. there was a report, the pilot

was asking to be rerouted. there's 50 french national, 4 canadians no americans so far. this area is desolate and also a conflict zone, al qaeda is likely operating there, george. >> it's unlikely that al qaeda affiliate had the missiles that could hit a passenger jet. >> you're right because this would have been flying at altitude, 33,000. they do have shoulder-launched missiles but that's when an aircraft is near the ground landing or taking off so unlikely very early to say this but unlike it was a missile. >> thanks very much. >> a difficult time right now in aviation. to the extreme weather. severe storms from coast to coast and scorching temperatures hitting records out west. ginger has the very latest for us. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, robin. at least 230 severe weather reports in the places that are always hot breaking record high temps. striking from newark airport in

new jersey to albuquerque, new mexico, lightning, gusting wind, rain and scorching heat. skies opening up over yankee stadium. >> the infield is just a mess. >> reporter: downpours forcing crews to roll out the tarps quickly, one person getting stuck underneath. and caramel, indiana, three homes catching fire after this lightning strike while at the famed saratoga springs racetrack in new york, spectators clearing out just before lightning demolished this tree. >> just exploded like somebody put some dynamite or something in it and just blew it up. >> reporter: in phoenix, extra hot. the temps soaring to 114. tying a record for the day. >> it is unbearable. >> it's like a sauna. >> reporter: so hot our abc affiliate decided to forgo an oven cooking chocolate chip cookies outside. but the hottest spot of the day goes to thermal, california. temps rocketing to 119 degrees. and today phoenix will get to 113 just shy of a record. look at some of the other scorching numbers there in the southwest.

plenty of triple-digit heat. and look at palm springs, even, 116. the other thing i needed to tell you about with the severe weather, of course, strong storms possible along that front in the southeast, so look for damaging wind possibilities there and hail. but back, another storm coming up in parts of the rockies just east of them, minot, bismarck and pierre all right there. i'll have much more in the nation's weather. for now, though, back to george and robin. >> thank you, ginger. >> we turn to a botched execution in arizona. the convicted killer should have died quickly from lethal injection. instead dragged out for almost two hours, the latest execution raising questions about lethal injections and the death penalty. pierre thomas is here with the details. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. the state of arizona sought to execute an inmate but had a hell of a time doing it. to some it was an unconstitutional spectacle. essentially torture. to others, poetic justice. it should have taken about ten minutes to execute joseph rudolph wood using a controversial lethal cocktail of drugs.

instead it took an hour and 57 minutes, so long his attorneys filed an emergency appeal with the u.s. supreme court. during his execution, claiming he was gasping and snorting, struggling to breathe. some of the witnesses were shocked. >> it was tough for everybody in the room. at a certain point you wondered if he ever was going to die. >> reporter: woods' case follows botched executions in ohio and oklahoma, where the use of these drugs also have been challenged. he was put to death for the murders of gene and debbie dietz that he shot in close range. family of the victims had no sympathy for how he died. >> you don't know what excruciating is. what's excruciating is seeing your dad lying there in a pool of blood. seeing your sister lying in a pool of blood. that's excruciating. this man deserved it. >> it's not just about him. it's about other people that suffered that are still suffering. he smiled and laughed at us and then went to sleep. >> reporter: arizona's governor said while the execution took

longer than she would have liked state doctors said the inmate did not suffer. she has ordered a review. robin. >> all right, pierre, thank you. now to that bizarre rampage in colorado. all caught on camera. a heavily armed man terrorizing a city. carjacking several vehicles before police were finally able to take down the suspect. abc's clayton sandell has that story. >> reporter: this is the bizarre crime spree caught on camera that put a city on edge. >> a male with a long gun and a female. they're just on the north side of the road. >> reporter: take a look at this man. armed with a rifle and a handgun terrorizing the lookout mountain area west of denver wednesday afternoon. he and an alleged female accomplice seen here minutes earlier, climbing down an embankment toward the highway. police say they just carjacked two different people including bush suter's co-worker. >> pulled out a machine gun and started shooting at him so he dove in the bushes. >> reporter: after crashing both stolen vehicles, the two then headed off on foot. >> we do have shots fired.

they do have the high ground on us. >> reporter: you can see the woman who turns out to be a juvenile is arrested. but the man tries making a getaway in these dump trucks. that doesn't work so he walks into this house, a couple inside. then watch this. he comes blasting through the closed garage door in their suv, driving until it gets stuck right next to that interstate. >> he's pointing a gun at cars. >> reporter: but watch this motorcycle deputy, the suspect drops his gun, but keeps moving toward another car, until that deputy makes the tackle. >> got him down on the ground middle of the highway. >> reporter: with the help of two good samaritans holding the suspect down it all comes to a dramatic end. no one injured. for "good morning america," clayton sandell, abc news, denver. >> wow, and as he said thankfully no one was injured. >> incredible. >> it is. >> now to amy with the other top stories. good morning, amy. >> all right, robin. good morning to you. we begin with news breaking overnight affecting air travelers.

the faa has lifted its ban on flights into israel. individual airlines can now decide whether to resume their flights. sirens did ring out though in tel aviv warning of rocket fire even as prime minister netanyahu was meeting with the british foreign minister. israel's iron dome defense system intercepted five rockets. secretary of state john kerry is reporting some progress in cease-fire negotiations, but israeli tanks and warplanes are still pounding gaza where more than 700 civilians have reportedly been killed. the u.n. is investigating possible israeli war crimes. well, the black boxes from malaysia airlines flight 17 are now in the hands of british experts. officials say they were not tampered with. a rebel leader in eastern ukraine denies that his fighters have the kind of missile that u.s. intelligence officials believe brought down that plane. but the white house says the downing of two ukrainian fighter planes just yesterday shows pro-russian rebels continue to pose a major threat to aircraft.

meantime, one mayor in the netherlands has called for dutch officials to deport russian president vladimir putin's daughter who lives in holland. that country suffered the most casualties on flight 17. but the mayor later apologized for those remarks. well, the new york city police department says up to 1,000 reports of suspects being placed in illegal choke holds may now have to be reviewed after the controversial death of a suspect last week. this new video is fueling more controversy. it shows officers struggling with a man accused of not paying for the subway. apparently placing him in a choke hold. nypd officials say the entire force may have to be retrained. and new video this morning of a massive fire tearing through this oil refinery in mexico forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. this is the third accident at this plant this year. nine workers have been injured. and a wild scene as this giraffe, yes, that's a giraffe got loose from a circus in

mexico and then started running down the road towards cars. his name is bingo. he got loose because a circus worker left his door open but you know what, bingo decided he had enough of that busy road and stuck his neck out far enough and he returned back to the circus and no one was injured. >> yay. finally, we all know our military heroes have strength most of us don't possess. well, that was really obvious on wall street late yesterday. take a look at this. the nation's newest medal of honor recipient ryan pitts was ring the closing bell. watch what happens when he pounds the gavel, one, two -- oh! look at his face, it's hilarious. whoops. he did not realize his own strength. >> he had that look on his face like do i have to pay for that? >> i didn't mean to do that. >> that's it. thank you, amy. appreciate that. now to the explosive start

to the trial of a man who fatally shot an unarmed young woman on his porch. theodore wafer claims he thought 19-year-old renisha mcbride was breaking into his home in the wee hours of the morning, and abc's alex perez has that story. >> reporter: theodore wafer's trial beginning with emotional and at times theatrical opening arguments wednesday. >> boom, boom, boom, boom. front door. he gets on the ground. crawling. in fear. >> reporter: defense attorneys arguing wafer feared for his life when he shot and killed 19-year-old renisha mcbride through the screen door of his suburban detroit home last november. but the prosecution said otherwise. >> the investigation will show you that there was no signs of any attempted breaking into this house. >> reporter: investigators say mcbride was drunk and had injured herself in a car accident when she stumbled on to his porch in the middle of the night pounding on the door looking for help. >> this is the door he shot through.

is that going to keep anybody out? no. >> reporter: at the center of the trial a michigan law that allows a person to use deadly force to defend themselves in their own home if they honestly, or reasonably believe they're in danger of death or great bodily harm. prosecutors argue mcbride was unarmed and posed no threat to him. >> the screen door that she was shot through was still locked at the time that the police got there. >> reporter: mcbride's death has divided this community. >> all: justice for renisha. >> reporter: some comparing it to the death of florida teen, trayvon martin. >> are you familiar with that picture? >> yes. >> reporter: on the witness stand her emotional mother. >> what is that a photograph of? >> my daughter. >> reporter: breaking down. and testimony resumed here at the courthouse just a short time ago. wafer has pleaded not guilty. this trial is expected to last about ten days. george? >> okay, alex, thanks very much.

we turn now to how an angry dad's tweet got his family kicked off their plane. duff watson was upset by the way his kids were treated when they boarded the southwest flight and showed it and paid the price and ryan owens has the story. >> could i maybe get that headset please? >> reporter: complaining to the airlines got adam sandler tased in the movie "anger management." >> do not raise your voice to me, sir. >> i wasn't raising my voice. >> calm down. >> i'm calm! >> oh! >> reporter: these days passengers are more likely to spew their frustration on social media. but watch what you tweet. just ask duff watson. >> very upset. very embarrassed. >> reporter: on sunday watson and his 6-year-old and 9-year-olds were traveling from denver to minneapolis on southwest airlines. dad travels a lot so he is an a-list passenger. they get to board first. his kids may be adorable but they aren't a-list so when they tried to board with him he said the gate agent wouldn't have it. >> i said real nice way to treat an a-list and i'll be sure to tweet about it. and he did. something to the effect of, wow, rudest agent in denver. gate c-39.

not happy. >> reporter: as soon as they settled into their seats they were asked to get off the plane. he says the agent felt the tweet was a threat. >> she said i'm going to call the cops. i thought something bad was going to happen like my dad being in jail. >> reporter: nobody was arrested but watson says the agent would not let the family reboard until he deleted the tweet. he did. >> there were no threats made. >> reporter: dallas based southwest sent a statement acknowledging a conversation about the airline's family boarding procedures escalated. but watson says southwest lost a loyal customer. this dad may be a-list but he says southwest is now on his no-fly list. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, dallas. >> the power of the gate agent. i mean, they have a lot of power. wow. >> you never know who's reading your tweets. you have no idea. >> that is the truth. >> got a weird story for us. >> yeah, you know, after more than 30 years of making music

>> dogs absolutely get jealous. >> sure, they do. >> that's coming you. new clues in the murder of a prominent law professor. dan markel was gunned down at his florida home and police zeroing in on a car spotted near the scene of the crime. abc's matt gutman has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, abc news has learned exclusively that florida state law professor dan markel was shot in the side of the head at relatively close range friday morning at his home in this tiny tallahassee neighborhood. it's the latest in a number of tantalizing new clues about a mystifying murder in a sleepy college town. >> he was the intended target in this situation. >> reporter: police now putting out pictures of this toyota prius which they say was seen in the area on the day of the crime. a police tip line also netting 50 tips so far, but one potentially big clue, what wasn't there, no sign of forced entry into the house. there's not enough information to suggest this is a contract murder. it certainly could be.

the most likely theory. it's somebody he knows. >> reporter: still with no suspects named, police are being careful not to reveal certain evidence. >> we must make sure that we are keeping the integrity of this case so we can bring it to the prosecution. >> the sensitive issue -- >> reporter: he was a harvard grad widely published and left behind two sons and an ex-wife, wendi adelson, also an fsu law professor who recently appeared on this internet talk show. documents obtained by abc news show the two finalized their divorce a year ago but still had been in a battle over access to their two young boys. tallahassee police say they've questioned adelson but have not named her or anyone else a suspect. we're speaking to everybody who has an affiliation with mr. markel. >> reporter: adelson's attorney said his client is devastated

and scared because she doesn't know who did this or why. and at this point, neither do police. for "good morning america," matt gutman, abc news, miami. >> let's talk to dan abrams about this right now so the biggest clue, no sign of forced entry. what does that tell you. >> that in conjunction with the fact that he was shot in the head has made it clear to the authorities that this was targeted. this was not random. it wasn't a break-in. it wasn't a robbery. that he was the intended victim here. and i think that's the reason that they've gone public with that information. they want to reassure the public there, the neighbors, et cetera, you don't have to worry, there's not a killer out there on the loose. this was someone who was specifically targeted and that's a really important clue. >> that's why they start to focus on everyone who might have known the free fesser. >> we tend to always talk about the personal side. he was involved in a divorce, et cetera. don't forget the professional side, too. a lot of these cases you see people with professional animus towards someone. would was he working with

they'll want to know, maybe things said on his blog, who might have had a motive to want him dead doesn't just mean personal. >> is this the kind of case that usually gets solved? >> yes, yes, because the fact that they believe he was so specifically targeted allows them to immediately go to the people that have a motive to kill him and i think that it'll likely be solved in the relatively near future. >> dan abrams, thanks very much. now to an around the world flight that went horribly wrong. a 17-year-old indiana boy and his father crashing in the pacific ocean. while trying to set a record. the boy was killed. his father is still missing. gio benitez has the story. >> reporter: tragedy in the open seas during an incredible worldwide journey. 17-year-old haris suleman and his father babar crashing this single-engine plane into the south pacific ocean near american samoa, less than an hour after taking off tuesday night. haris was piloting the plane and perished. authorities have not yet located his father. >> the air traffic controller saw the lights of the plane go down. >> reporter: the father and son

team from plainfield, indiana, were trying to fly around the world in 30 days blogging and posting photos from the trip along the way. all to raise a million dollars to build schools in pakistan. >> i wouldn't be in the united states and i wouldn't be a pilot today without the education that my father received and i want pakistani kids to have the same opportunity i had. >> reporter: the pair's journey started in greenwood, indiana, june 19th. traveling to canada, iceland, across europe, egypt, malaysia and australia before their final fatal stop in american samoa. >> a dream my dad had. one my brother shared with him. it was something they were doing together and i couldn't wish for anything else. >> reporter: if the sulemans had completed their journey, haris would have set a record as the youngest pilot to fly around the world in 30 days. at 17, he had just gotten his private pilot's license in the u.s. even so, the family says father and son were cautious and aware of setbacks along the way. >> had known there was bad weather they never would have taken off. >> reporter: for "good morning america," gio benitez, abc news,

reese is back home with his family in houston, texas, after running away in 2007. >> we looked everywhere for days. >> reporter: the millers say they couldn't find reese anywhere but while he seemed to have completely disappeared, they say they never forgot him. >> and we never gave up hope. well, and we never stopped talking about him. >> reporter: this weekend they were thrilled to get an unbelievable phone call. reese had been found in tacoma, washington, almost 2,000 miles away thanks to a microchip connecting him to the family. >> it was just a fairy tale. he's had a fairy tale. >> reporter: but not everyone is living happily ever after. >> right now i feel like there's something missing. >> reporter: it turns out this dog's been living a double life. also going by the name of harley. the woffords in washington state say harley is their beloved family dog adored by their three children and nine grandchildren and he ran away just this weekend.

>> my son came back from iraq. he was broken. i can't even explain what harley has done for him. harley's touched our lives more than you can explain. >> my niece, it's really even harder to see her cry for him every single day. >> reporter: they claim they adopted harley 6 1/2 years ago. the shelter saying the previous owner had given him up and never mentioning a microchip. though the woffords desperately want the maltese returned, the millers say they're not giving him back and experts say they don't have to. >> in this situation we look at possession and right now the millers have the pet and they'll probably be allowed to keep the dog. >> now, the woffords say they don't blame the millers for wanting to keep the dog but they are upset with the shelter they adopted him from for reportedly not checking for a microchip in 2007 and while they are devastated they say they're comforted in knowing that the dog is in a good home with a loving family but so sad because no one did anything wrong here.

red eye flight when it disappeared from radar and lost contact. it was 15 minutes from the flight. it was md-83. there were conflicting reports how many were on board. could be as much as 119. severe weather in that area and reportedly the pilot was asking to reroute when contact was lost. amy? well, this morning u.s. airlines are free to resume flights to israel now that the faa has lifted its ban. but sirens rang out in tel aviv warning of rocket fire. five rockets fired from gaza were intercepted. meantime, the israeli military is targeting hamas tunnels in gaza like this 1, among 30 it claims to have uncovered so far. the palestinians say more than 730 people have died in the conflict. most of them civilians. and there is new outrage this morning over capital punishment. it stems from the execution of convicted murderer joseph wood in arizona. wood was given a lethal injection, but witnesses say he

gasped for nearly two hours wednesday before eventually dying. arizona governor jan brewer has ordered a full review. this is the third case in the u.s. this year in which a lethal injection has not gone as planned. and important news for million of americans who suffer from back pain. researchers have found that acetaminophen does nothing to relieve the pain giving no more relief than a placebo. acetaminophen is sold under several brand names including tylenol. and tough times at general motors. the company just reported an 85% drop in profits last quarter because of the string of recent safety recalls, the most recent just yesterday affecting more than 700,000 cars and trucks. and finally, in florida this morning, they are calling these guys the bare naked burglars. well, you just have to look at the pictures to wonder why. we're told they did have underwear on when they broke into the beachside restaurant but for some reason, they took their undies off when they stole the restaurant's supply of

got to move on in the "heat index." we'll talk about the hidden sugar in healthy foods. turns out greek yogurt packed with protein can also be packed with sugar. becky worley has the story. >> reporter: in the quest to stay healthy, losing a few pounds frequently comes down to simple math, less fat, less sugar, more protein and a secret weapon for many in the weight loss war is greek yogurt. >> it's high in protein. it's got pro-buy ott ticks, it's lower in sugar than regular yogurt so it's just a good energy boosting food. >> reporter: but in recent testing, popular brands, "consumer reports" was suffered. >> when we looked at the nutrition labels we noticed something a little strange about the whole food product. >> reporter: whole foods, 365 plain fat-free greek yogurt says on the label it has two grams of sugar per serving. but all other brands of the same type have 6 to 12 grams of sugar. tastes the same as all the other plain nonfat greek yogurts.

none of these are any sweeter than the whole foods brand. >> to have two grams of sugar in a cup of yogurt is a little unusual even though it's a plain yogurt. >> reporter: so "consumer reports" sent six different samples to an independent lab that conducted industry standard tests to determine the sugar content. instead of two grams of sugar like the label listed, "consumer reports" says the lab found the average sugar content was 11.4 grams. more than five times the listed amount. a big deal to some. >> consumers like a diabetic would be looking at that nutrition label making decisions for their daily life and intake and if they're counting sugar grams every gram counts for them. >> reporter: whole foods told us this product was tested by a reputable third party lab using fda approved testing methodology to determine the labeling. they say they recognize that "consumer reports" is a trusted publication and are looking into why their test results differ. so while this greek yogurt drama plays out, everyone should

good morning. i'm kristen sze. the chp is investigating a fatal crash on highway 101 in santa clara at great america parkway. that's the third fatal crash on that stretch in less than a week. a corvette convertible failed to negotiate a turn from the on-ramp to the freeway. the passenger, a man in his 40s, died at the scene. the driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. witnesses say the car was speeding and flipped five times before sliding across the freeway on its roof. hopefully, folks are driving safely out there. ley leyla, what's happening? >> an accident involving multiple vehicles on the connector between westbound 92 and 101. southbound traffic on 101 very heavy. 50 minutes to head away from hayward into foster city.

say. maybe "invictus" when i played mandela. but also when i did "glory," the story of the 54th massachusetts regiment, that was -- that moved me. >> those ones have to strike so deep. you got a whole other career as a producer. i saw that through the worm hole, a show you've been producing for years, got an emmy nomination this year, congratulations, finale is tonight and love the premise of this. what would it be like -- would you know it if you were living in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? >> well, the way we examine it, we could very well be living in one right now. >> this is a zombie apocalypse. >> well, because we are not quite in control of ourselves. we're actually dependent on that little thing attached to the waist. >> oh, the little -- the smartphone. >> yeah, yeah. you can ask anybody where's your

kesha with us gracing the cover of "teen vogue" this month and seen her as one of the judges on "rising star" advising up and coming singers competing for their big break. i've enjoyed talking with you this morning and it is wonderful to see you, people know they've been pulling for you. they know that you were in rehab for an eating disorder that you checked yourself in. so we want to know how are you doing? i'm doing really well. thanks for asking. i've been overwhelmed with the amount of love and support i've received. it's insane. like it was really touching. i'm so grateful for it. >> what was the pose difficult aspect of that portion of the journey for you. >> the whole process? just really learning to block out negativity and not letting the hateful messages get to me because i, you know -- i've received some hateful things just trying to block that all out and stay positive. >> i hope you are feeling the love. i mean that and that's a lesson for us all to block that out and just to accept the good and this

new music that you're working on, i know. >> it's fun. >> well, how is it different? >> well, i've written all sorts of different kinds of songs. one song is kind of country and other ones are just about the craziness of life but i just -- i write all my own music so i've just been writing like crazy. >> okay, because on twitter people have been asking, in fact, someone asked directly and said "when is the new album coming out?" >> i don't know. i don't have a date. all i know i am doing "rising star" on sundays and every other day of the week i'm in the studio. >> oh, and speaking of "rising star" which i'm a big fan of, i watch on sunday -- >> it is fun. >> it's great because you and ludacris and brad paisley, of course, you're the experts, the judges but people at home, that crazy app. >> the app is great. all you do, you check in to vote yes or no and these amazing singers like their fate is in your hands. you see the bar going up, it's super exciting. >> wonderful to see faces all across the country that are there as the wall goes up and

amy brenneman stars in hbo's "the leftovers," the premise of this mysterious show % of the world's population has disappeared and no one has any idea why. amy is here to tell us about this very compelling show and, amy, i love your character because i mean as an actress this has to be such a challenge. she doesn't speak after joining this cult. how do you convey your feelings? what is it like as an actress? >> you know, part of it's easy. i don't have to learn lines. when damon first pitched me this idea, i mean i genuinely like to watch people and listen to people and when my character started doing more things and taking action and some of the actions are not going to be particularly liked by the audience, then i thought, you know, i tapped into that piece of me that wants to be liked and

understood by the audience and had to let it go. mystery is a great word for it. >> exactly. speaking of letting it go, i mean you really go there because you don't even wear any makeup. >> yeah. >> on the show. >> yeah. i sort of dove into the pilot and, you know, i'm a bit of a tomboy. no problem. and i saw it last september and i was like, oh, my god. i mean, this has gotten so much buzz and there are already theories and speculations out there about exactly why 2% of the population has been missing. have you heard some of those theorys and does one stand out to you as the craziest. >> my dear friend at the premiere said i know what it is. you are departed. i said, what do you mean? like i'm a person. she's like, no, but you don't speak. so she had this whole like we're in sort of heaven and -- i was like, no, that's totally wrong. >> back here in reality you are a supermom of two. i heard that when you're with your children, you do not look at your phone. >> well, i try not to.

i do -- they're going to watch this and go what. >> my daughters call me mrs. text-a-lot. >> i know. i try not to mostly -- i have a 13 and 9-year-old and don't want them to do it to me much as a family, culture, we're trying to figure the mores. >> you direct your children's plays at school. supermom. >> badly. i taught a class where i was so relaxed because there was nothing -- there was no product that needed to be made and then as soon as i directed this thing, production of "annie" i became a shrew and i was like, listen, february 20th, you better -- all of my ease went away. i was like -- as i was doing it i was like, this -- i'm not good at it. i'm not inspiring or fun. >> well, you're fantastic in front of the camera. amy brenneman, a pleasure to have here and what an incredible, incredible show. we're all going to be binge watching "the leftovers" airs sunday nights on hbo. ♪ suddenly i see."
