live from the kgo tv broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, everybody. i'm ama daetz. it is the third plane disaster in a week. the international officials say the wreckage and missing remains from the missing air flight algiers crashed today. >> today, it totals 700 lives lost. the recent disasters are now raising more flying fears. abc news reporter kirk hawkins with more. >> reporter: bad weather and thunderstorms may have played a

role in the plane to algeria. the aircraft was being operated by a spanish company for air algeria. at least 116 on board. the jet was 50 minutes into its flight when contact was lost. the french foreign minister believes the plane crashed in northern mali. despite the rash of plane crashes in the past week this air traveller says he is not fazed. the air algier crash was the 47th in seven days. 298 people were shot down over eastern ukraine. >> it makes you think twice about what happens and what is on your mind. >> reporter: including the still missing malaysian air flight 370. that makes four commercial flights that have crashed or

disappeared in four months, all coming at a time when fatal plane accidents are down. >> at the end of the day we have to look at the whole picture. and flying remains far safer than you even getting in the car. >> two french fighter jets are now searching the remote area of mali searching for the plane. violent clashes have been in the area for years. 74 more coffins of victims of downed malaysian airlines flight 17 arrived in the netherlands today. authorities hope all the bodies recovered will be in the netherlands by friday. mounds of flowers have been left as tributes to the victims in air amsterdam, where the flight originat originated. the temperature here starting to warm up. in fact, tomorrow is the spare the air day.

more on weather update. >> reporter: hi, it is warm out here right now, as a matter of fact warm to hot, just about everywhere. let's look at live doppler 7 hd. i'll show you what is going on. clear skies across the region, and temperatures have really gone up today. take a look at the highs so far. 94 antioch,ñr livermore, santa rosa, oakland, 75 in san francisco, and 96 in fairfield, the cooler spot at half moon bay. blue skies, we do have a spare the air, as larry mentioned for tomorrow. santa clara valley, moderate elsewhere. south central bay looking at good air quality. the view from the camera, nothing but sunshine right now. here is the first forecast, mild to warm, mid-60s to mid-80s, mild, mainly clear tomorrow morning and even hotter weather tomorrow. upper 70s to low 100s. hotter inland, of course. warmer at the coast, spare the air alert. it is the sixth one of the season and we may look at record

high temperatures for tomorrow. i'll be back with the detailed look in a few minutes. all right, thank you, just as the weather is heating up two popular east bay swimming beaches now are shut down because of the drought. this is the first time the east bay regional park system has had to do this and it has to do with water contamination. the drought attributing factor. laura anthony has more. >> reporter: well, hi, larry, here at temescal, the issue is toxic algae. and let's see what it looks like right now. the beach is open, but the water is off limits. there is always a certain amount of algae in this area but for some reason the toxic algae has spike where d spiked where the water department has determined it is simply too unsafe or healthy to swim. today may be a beach day for this child, but at temescal, she

knows better than to go near the water. same with these kids in junior lifeguard camp, all dry today thanks to the green/blue algae blooms. the lake itself is off limits. >> this had to do with boats, so we can't get in the water, which is tough. but we beef it up with other skills, like water. >> reporter: and this is not the only area closed. so is the south end of the beach at pleasanton shadow cliffs, but there is the problem of e. coli. >> the grass is brown right now. we're not watering the lawns. and that is the area where the geese would normally congregate. now the geese are congregating at the beaches. so do ccs, and low water quality

is an issue. >> reporter: at both temescal and shadow cliffs, anyone who ingests the water runs the risk of getting very sick. the water is being tested daily but there is no time table for reopening either beach. in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. sky 7 now takes us to live breaking news in the hills of san mateo county where crews are fighting a brush fire in woodside which broke out at 3:30 at canada, at the campus, the redwood city fire department has tweeted smoke is causing problems. and you can see it really going up here, causing problems for drivers along the freeway, although the traffic is still moving at a good pace. no word yet on the size of the fire, precisely, firefighters from both woodside and redwood city are on scene. we'll keep you posted. if you want more information follow us on twitter. and a former san francisco

state university professor is under arrest. accused of taking video of his students using his bathroom during some parties. investigators say mark landis invited several students to his home for parties. one student found a hidden camera inside the bathroom. when the student searched the memory card he found video of other guests using the bathroom. landis faces 15 misdemeanor counts of invasion of privacy. he is no longer a faculty member and resigned earlier this month. a local woman charged with child endangerment after police say she left her kids in the car. 37-year-old faley wynette was arrested after her children were found strapped to car seats inside livermore. police believe the kids were in the car for about an hour and were not injured. her public defender claimed she went in to use the rest room. the prosecutors dispute the claim.

yynette did not enter a plea. and three people were dead including a hostage after bank robbers drove away in a black 1997 buick century. you're looking at it there. the car was found but police still do not know who the driver was. misty singh, was shot and killed after the robbers used her as a human shield. and a dramatic arrest on interstate 880 causing a big backup this morning. abc 7 news reporter nick smith has more from the chp office in oakland with the latest. nick? >> reporter: but larry, get this. we now know that the first hit-and-run may have happened in castro valley, miles away. all of this as we watched a dramatic end to a driver that chp says was high on drugs. chp got their first call to 911 around 8:30 a.m. commuters

report a reckless driver on northbound 880. less than 30 minutes later it would end like this. a view you will see only from sky 7 hd. the driver of the vehicle, rafi, the registered owner of the blue toyota didn't stop when officers hit their lights and later crashed near 33rd avenue and 880. take a look as one, two, three, and what appear to be a fourth officer move in to get the 32 under control. chp says that rafi was strong and combative. and officers believe they know why. >> we determined he was under the influence of some type of drug. >> reporter: police say he was weaving in and out of lanes and speeding. then chp got word he hit other cars and kept on going. chp says they received a total of 23911 calls directly connected to this incident. an eyewitness described the moment before the crash and cops taking rafi down.

>> he slammed into the wall, chp drove in front of him and stopped him from moving any farther. and then jumped out with his gun and smashed the window and started to drag the guy out. >> he was taken to highland hospital for medical evaluation, due to the fact we used force. >> reporter: rafi was taken into custody and police escort transferred jiminhim here for a medical evaluation, which is standard procedure. >> he will look at felony evading charges. we've gone from 300 hundreds to a possibility of five now. >> reporter: chp says cars were smashed but nobody was hurt. the successful stop and arrest could not have happened without the public's help. >> an impaired driver is not somebody you want on the road with you. police in san jose found a trunk f trunkful of narcotics after a driver they tried to pull over took off.

the driver is charged with hit-and-run, evading police and drug possession. the suspect smashed into another car near connell road this morning before spinning out then hitting a third car. two people, including the suspect, suffered minor injuries. and arson investigators say the cause of a roof fire at a san jose middle school appears to be suspicious. san jose fire got reports of smoke coming out of davis intermediate school early this morning. it took about 20 minutes for firefighters to put out the flames. they saved a room and furniture. investigators say there is no heat source on that roof so there is a chance that the fire was intentionally set. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4:00. the big international sporting events coming to the bay area this weekend. plus, how diving for golf balls can turn into a rather hazardous job. and new at 4:30. >> a new water conservation program is under way to try to convince people brown is the new green. plus, in some cases they will pay you to take out your lawn.

and just moments ago we saw active flames and then a helicopter drop. this fire broke out at canada around 3:30 p.m. >> it is right near the campus of canada college. the downed power lines may have sparked this fire. the smoke is causing some problems for drivers along that stretch of freeway. and we'll of course stay with the latest. but the smoke has gone down a little bit after the helicopter went by and did the water drop. >> yeah, they did the water drop and it appears it might be the most effective way of putting this out. like i said just moments ago when we were in the commercial break we could really see the flames roaring up. this was obviously something that is going to be taking a while to get it all resolved. >> that is right, we'll keep an eye on it. you can get breaking news updates on abc twitter. some of the world's best soccer teams are coming to the bay area.

real madrid will play milan on saturday. this is part of the international champions league. and sky 7 hd shows us the real grass on top of the normal turf playing surface that they put down for the international team. madrid will play the earthquakes, here at candlestick park. it is an ongoing effort by la liga to use soccer to promote spain. and happening now, crews back on the east side. planting the last few palm trees. sky 7 hd was there as the palm was hoisted into place. caltrans has bought some of the trees from homeowners. today, crews uprooted the palm trees from a house in san bruno, weighing 11,000 pounds. the homeowner said it was becoming a problem. >> the foundation, every time in rainy season we have water inside the family's house. >> the tree will be planted tomorrow near the others.

the landscaping project will conclude next week with the planting of the final several trees. a total of 30 palm trees will link the toll plaza and the new bridge span. you want to talk about a rough day at work. a scuba diver is recovering after an gator bit him in florida, he makes his living scuba diving for golf balls. yesterday, a ten-foot long alligator chomped down on his hand. the area is close to a swimming area teeming with alligators. >> it didn't look like it felt very well. but it was just bite marks on his wrist and hand. >> there was blood coming from it. >> a lot of pain, definitely hurts. >> martinez also survived a several attack to see left hand in 2006. as for the gator, the trapper was able to capture it.

on. if you're heading to the garlic festival that is not the only thing that will be roasting. it will be a hot one, let me show you live doppler 7 hd. we'll tell you about the weekend in just a moment. clear skies from the live doppler 7 hd perspective. temperatures are up, anywhere from about 14 degrees higher in livermore and novato to about four degrees warmer in half moon bay. take a look at the blue skies, 73 in san francisco, 81 in oakland, 90 degrees in san carlos, look at gilroy, almost 100 degrees right now. the tower cameras showing you a lovely view of the golden gate bridge there. visible, 89 in santa rosa, napa, novato, livermore, pretty hot. from the east bay camera, looking at lake merritt and oakland. just a lovely shot there. triple digit heat inland tomorrow. spare the air for heat and humidity expected for the upcoming weekend.

so let's look at the satellite and radar here, what we have going on is high pressure building in. dry northerly wind flow, providing us with the drier air mass so the humidity has come down. but also the hot weather increasing our fire danger. the heat peaks tomorrow. we may be looking at a couple of record high temperatures as we head into friday. tomorrow morning, mostly clear, upper 50s to mid-60s. a mild start. and then for your afternoon, 95 in san jose, it will be cooking there. 100 in gilroy. 99 morgan hill. 94 in sunnyvale, on the peninsula, 90 in san mateo. pretty warm on the coast as well. 78 in pacifica, downtown san francisco, 82, that indicates there could be a record. low-to-mid 70s at the coastline. triple digits, clear lake,

harley after adopting him six years ago. the dog ran away from that family's home in tacoma, washington recently. then a chip reunited reese with the millers in texas. >> we never gave up hope, and we never stopped talking about him. >> harley touched our lives more than you can explain. >> one legal expert tells abc news because the millers have possession of the dog they will probably be allowed to keep him. the family admits they're upset but not with the millers. they're mad at the shelter for not checking the dog's microchip back in 2007. >> that is a tough situation. more than 150,000 people will step into the world of super heroes this weekend in san diego. co comic-con started today. >> and batman fans can wish the caped crusader happy 70th. some can enjoy movies and tv shows and also learn how makeup

missiles hit a school in the u.n. killing 250 people and injuring dozens of others. nbc's marcy gonzales has more. >> reporter: chaos at this hospital in northern gaza after a united-nations run shelter was hit today. blood and shrapnel still around the courtyard. women, u.n. workers and so many children are reportedly among the injured and dead. this was supposed to be a safe place for palestinian families to hide from the barrage of rocket fire that has destroyed homes, reportedly displacing more than 100,000 people in gaza since the conflict began more than two weeks ago. the israelis hit us in our homes and at the school. the israeli military claims because hamas was firing rockets from nearby they warned the u.n. to evacuate the school. israel blamingçó hamas for stopping the evacuation.

>> hamas is using its own palestinian civilians as human shields. this is the main reason for the level of casualties among civilians. >> reporter: this, coming after the u.n. security council yesterday voting to investigate the israeli council for war crimes. >> this is not permitting us to defend our people. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry is in cairo, still trying to broker a cease-fire as people on both sides of the conflict beg for peace. >> we again say enough civilians, enough women and children. they have suffered quite enough. >> reporter: and after earlier concerns that planes could be hit by hamas rockets the faa has now lifted its ban on u.s. flights going into and out of tel aviv. united, delta and u.s. airways are all now resuming flights. marcy gonzales, new york. and pope francis met with a woman who escaped the death penalty in sudan for refusing to

recant her christian faith. the pope thanked ibrahim for her faith. the u.s. worked with italy and other nations to win her release. and a storm swept over the virginia coast, at least two people were killed, dozens more injured. abc news reporter karen travers from virginia now. >> reporter: more than 1300 people were at the campground when the storm hit. panic and chaos as the winds whipped around the grounds snapping trees and flipping trailers. one camper at the camping resort shooting video, scared but still able to describe the scene. >> look at the trail on the guy's camper. >> reporter: the weather service issued a tornado warning, ten minutes before the twister hit. the storm formed over the chesapeake bay, producing a

water spout that moved onshore as a tornado. one volunteer firefighter who happened to be at the campground before the storm described the sky as jet black. the suspected tornado was part of a string of thunderstorms that hit the area. the storm, which produced strong winds and hail reportedly an inch in diameter lasted for nearly four hours. dozens were injured, including a couple whose granddaughter said they were sitting in their car when a giant piece of debris came crashing down on top of it. the cherrywood resort is located on the chesapeake bay. most of the campers were staying in campers, rvs or tents, none of which are strong enough to with stand a tornado. the camp is closed except to workers who are conducting a count of everyone here. the national weather service has not yet confirmed if the fierce storm that passed over the campground was actually a tornado. karen travers, cape charles, virginia. and in the south bay, they

are encouraging homeowners to have their lawns go brown. >> it is an effort to save water, and rebates are providing plenty of incentive. david, i guess brown is the new green? >> reporter: that is a great phrase, brown is the new green. before the drought people may frown at something like that. south bay water officials are urging people to step up to the plate. the water usage has only dropped 13% here, versus the goal of 20%. you see all sorts of front yards these days, but this one stands out. they took advantage of the rebate program to replace their lawn with drought tolerant plans. the project costs $5,000, but they got a $2,000 rebate. they doubled their effort from one to three square foot. >> right now in response to the drought they want to save water, but with the increased rebate, it is an incentive for people to

do projects they have been meaning to do for a while. >> not everyone can afford to take on a new plan, so the slogan is that brown is the new green. they will see the new ad on billboards and yard signs. >> one thing that people can do is go out to your controller and turn it down to 80% of what you normally water or cut down the days to two, maybe one, to what you ordinarily landscape. >> reporter: karen had her lawn removed in early may. but since water bills are two months apart it is too early to tell the savings she realized. her new yard along with the brown yards on the street indicate to her the spirit of conservation catching on. >> i think there is community feel, we're all pitching in, doing our best, either letting our lawns go brown, or as i like to call it, gold. or going ahead and taking out the turf grass and replacing it with more efficient plans. >> reporter: last year were

you probably heard the line "it takes a village to raise a child." in this case it takes a herd of elephants to protect the calf. you see the group of elephants at the nature park in thailand. the currents are too strong for the little baby so the herd shows their protective instinct. they step in and protect the baby by blocking the current and eventually get her and all of them back to the shore. like how do they know how to do it? they have to work together as a team. >> i love it. >> that is fantastic. that is sweet. well, photo bombs happen all the time. but a photo bomb of queen elizabeth smiling. they were warming up with their teammates when the queen stopped by to say hello. taylor posted this image on

twitter, saying oh, the queen photo-bombed our selfie and even smiled. how fantastic, and this extreme skater from india, rolling from 39 cars in a row with his face only inches from the ground, the skate got him into the guinness book of world records. the boy said he got his first skates at three and has not stopped. his next goal is to skate underneath 100 cars and to eventually go to the olympics although i'm not sure this is an olympic event. it is just madie i amazing to w. the skills are amazing, a local celebrity, one more time. >> wonder how many times he has gotten stuck just trying. >> never? >> never? >> that is fantastic. >> that is really fantastic, also fantastic, the weather, if you like it hot it definitely is warming up. our meteorologist is here with

he has seen them but never has been able to ride one because of serious medical conditions. he sent the pictures of the train ride with just his family and friends. he got to sound the horn, even announced the next stop. bart also gave austin a special plaque so he can remember his trip. had a good time. all right, "the sound of music" filled the area. >> we're talking about accordions here. live from the accordion convention where the squeeze play is on today. wayne? >> reporter: i bet you didn't know that the accordion is the official instrument in the city of san francisco. it is. here we're at the center of the accordion universe. people from all over the world. this gentleman from scotland, it has been a jam all day. ♪ ♪ ♪ set aside all assumptions you

in offices is in the works. >> this is a huge loss. >> reporter: the grower's association didn't return our calls for comment. and vendors say they heard about the sales from news reports, not the front office. most vendors are pretty blue and believe there will be a high rise here instead of a flower mart. >> i think the flower mart will disappear, i don't know how many years it will take but i think it will happen. >> reporter: but the owner of one business that has been here since 1927 is optimistic. >> the flower market will grow, and continue. there is still a need for what is going on here and what we do. >> reporter: the realtor company says the goal is to develop the site into a higher, better use. they do want to keep a portion of the san francisco flower mart though. this deal needs to be approved still, though, by shareholders.

this morning on interstate 880 near 23rd avenue, just south of downtown oakland. officers began the chase after receiving reports of a reckless driver hitting several cars. abc 7 news reporter nick smith is live in oakland with the story. >> reporter: dan, cheryl, good afternoon. new information we now know from chp that that suspect will undergo a psychiatric evaluation. 23 calls to 911, at least five cars were hit turning parts of 880 into a virtual bumper cars. our cameras were there. in video you will see only from sky 7 hd, take a look. this is how chp took down rafi. an eyewitness described the moments before the crash and cars moving in. guns drawn. >> chp drove in front of him and stopped him from moving any farther. and then jumped out with his
