>> the badly burned wreckage of the air algerie jet has now been found in mali. none of the 116 people on board survived. >> and nearly half of the passengers were french, many going home from africa. the pilot had apparently changed course because of the severe storms in the area. >> it is, of course, the third air disaster in a week. abc's susan saulny has more. >> reporter: the scene feels eerily familiar, a lost passenger plane, this time over africa. anguished family and friends gathered desperate for information. overnight the authorities from several countries confirmed that wreckage had been found. the plane, an air algerie md-83 carrying 116 people, crashed on thursday in severe weather over the strife-torn country of mali. about 50 minutes into the flight, the pilots wanted to change course. according to the french, the jet disappeared. this shows what the plane was heading into, strong storms. >> it's likely to be a combination of the weather and

the pilots not being able to react to the weather. >> reporter: but the french foreign minister wouldn't rule out any cause among the possibilities terrorism. mali is home to an al qaeda affiliate, but while they may have shoulder-launched missiles like these, they can't reach a jet at high altitude where the md-83 was flying. travelers may be concerned about air safety given the recent spate of grim aviation accidents. >> the whole picture is that flying remains far safer than you even getting in the car and driving to the grocery store. >> reporter: nearly half of the air algerie passengers were french. many on their way home from africa. susan saulny, abc news, washington. and there are new calls this morning for a united nations team to take over securing the malaysian airlines crash in ukraine. pro-russian rebels controlling that area are accused of hindering the investigation, and now the obama administration says russian forces are escalating hostilities by firing at ukraine from inside russia. the state department also says that it has evidence that

russia plans to deliver more weapons and more pro-russian fighters to the rebels in ukraine. in the mideast this morning the violence has spilled over into the west bank and thousands of palestinian protesters are battling forces near ramallah where they are demonstrating against israel's military action in gaza. palestinian officials inside gaza say 119 people were killed on thursday alone, making it the bloodiest day yet in this war. but there is word this morning that negotiators are working on a possible one-week cease-fire. solving the immigration crisis tops president obama's meeting today with the leaders of el salvador, guatemala and honduras. one idea under consideration a pilot program that would screen minors before they leave home then give them refugee status. the president also plans to talk about speeding up deportations and whether those leaders are ready to take their children back. we're getting dramatic new details about the shootout that put a philadelphia area hospital on lockdown and let a worker dead.

police say a mentally disturbed patient shot the employee inside a doctor's office at the hospital. that's when the doctor pulled out his own gun and exchanged fire with the patient. police say the doctor likely saved lives. >> this could be a much different situation if the perpetrator was allowed to continue with his actions, so i give credit to the staff for intervening. >> the patient was hit three times and is in critical condition. the doctor, a psychiatrist, only received a graze wound. a deadly twister at a popular campground in virginia. a couple was killed when a tree fell on their tent and nearly 40 others were injured. the tornado blew in with huge hail and winds as strong as 100 miles per hour flipping over rvs and snapping dozens of trees. many campers had very little warning. not nearly enough time to seek shelter before the twister hit. >> we were in the eye of this tornado pretty much is what it felt like and it seemed like.

it was scary. >> about 1300 vacationers were at the campsite when the storm hit. and good samaritans had to pull out three people from the water. it was also stormy in colorado where this spectacular lightning bolt was captured on camera. the snapshot was taken yesterday afternoon by a passenger flying into denver. she says the bad weather forced her southwest flight to circle several times before landing. another sweltering day is in store for millions of people across the southwest with record temperatures climbing well into the triple digits. parts of southern california hovered between 110 and 115 degrees. an excessive heat warning was posted in arizona with cities like tempe and phoenix hitting 114. in addition to the heat scattered showers and thunderstorms in the west for arizona and new mexico. up to colorado and utah. stormy at times across the upper midwest. windy in the central plains. heavy rain from the carolinas to florida. 80s from new york to new orleans. triple digits from dallas and

phoenix and 90s in the rockies and plains. the detroit homeowner accused of shooting a woman on his porch now says he didn't know the gun was loaded. the explanation was revealed as jurors listened to theodore wafer's interview with police just after the shooting. until now, wafer maintained he intentionally fired in self-defense fearing his own life when 19-year-old renisha mcbride ended up on his porch last november. a flea market find is back with its rightful owner called a tribute flag. messages from a fallen marine's comrade after he died in a helicopter crash in iraq. now, it was supposed to go to the machine's family, not to a flea market but that's where it was purchased for 5 bucks. the buyers didn't know what it was right away. >> we were like, oh, my gosh, you know, why isn't this with this young man's pore? >> my son coming back to me and i loved them for that. >> the marine's mother will meet her benefactors tomorrow and get the flag from them, another

slick at times across the upper midwest. thunderstorms could make for a slippery ride from southern utah into colorado, arizona and northern new mexico. and some good news for you. looks like a great day for flying. no weather-related airport delays are expected across the country. well, a shocking revelation from nasa overnight. a blast from space nearly caused a global disaster just two years ago. >> it's incredible. the sun released a massive solar flare in july of 2012. had it been a direct hit, it would have disabled every electronic device on earth and crippled water supplies. experts say it would have caused chaos and disaster on an epic scale. the chances of a similar event happening in the next 10 years is about 12%. >> sounds like a sci-fi movie. >> yeah, and that seems like a high percentage when you think about the kind of destruction you're talking about. >> you're right. well, that hero deputy who took down an armed carjacking suspect while cameras were rolling is speaking out. >> we showed you these dramatic scenes when colorado deputy

fred haggett single-handedly tackled the suspect on the freeway after his wild rampage. haggett says it's all training and any other officer in his shoes would have done the same thing. >> it's a momentary thought that i'm outgunned, and i need to engage him. he's -- my sense was he was trying to get into another vehicle, hijack a vehicle there on the highway, and we couldn't -- i couldn't let that happen. >> well, we're still impressed. haggett adds that there are plenty of high-fives to go around and is grateful to the citizens who helped out. a drone caused a stir after it captured images of the space needle this week. tourists could be seen waving to the drone before it flew back to a nearby hotel room. so police questioned the drone's owner after receiving a report that it had hit the needle. but there was no damage to the tower and no evidence of a crash on the video. and a creepy mystery baffling a southern california

community has been solved. a woman has come forward to claim responsibility for leaving porcelain dolls on the doorsteps in san clemente. now, families were concerned after receiving the dolls that looked like their daughters. investigators say the woman attended the same church as many of the families, and she meant it to be a kind gesture. well, the director of the ohio state university marching band has been fired. school officials say john waters ignored a, quote, sexualized culture in the famous halftime unit. mostly sexually explicit hazing. waters' attorney tells abc news his client "did nothing wrong and tried to do the right thing at every turn." okay, you know, it's called world team tennis, but taylor townsend had to go it alone and it was kind of her fault. you see this. ouch. she hit her partner in the back of the head. you know, the partner needed medical attention. >> oh, man, but the rules say that the match must go on, so townsend played the entire

that could have been a baseball bat. this is what we know, police are vetting a stabbing after a big fight in east san jose near the airport with three men stabbed and two others beaten with a bat or stick at 10:45 last night. lieutenant dwyer broke it down. >> we know who groups were in a large fight with several weapons involved. we do know note if both sides had weapons but both sides had injuries. all five were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. investigators are not sure what started the fight. right now, san jose police are asking anyone who may have seen anything contact the san jose police
