[ heart beats ] get back on track this morning after the a bomb threat shut down a key east bay station for hours. thanks for joining us. >> bart commuters are doing much better after a morning of frustration the result of a massive police response at the oakland coliseum station. we're live in the newsroom with more. katie? >> reporter: the threat shut things down at the peak of the

morning commute. only the coliseum station was evacuated but as riders well know, that's all it takes to bring the system to a stand still. from sky 7 hd you can see police officers and canine units searching the oakland coliseum bart station. the dogs search every inch of the perimeter. a bart spokesman says someone called 911 saying they'd heard about a possible bomb threat. the station was immediately closed. as police and alameda county sheriffs deputies investigated, ac transit buss arrived to rescue stranded commuters but bart couldn't avoid major system wide delays. some riders say they never saw a bus and had a nightmare of a commute from the east bay to san francisco. >> was told we weren't going through, had to go back to west dublin, got off at -- went all the way back to dublin, got off at dublin, switched to the train to get to san francisco. so it's been, like, an hour and a half commute. >> they said if you have

alternative means to get a-to-a station on the other side of oakland than by all means do that but there was no other alternative. >> law enforcement give the all-clear around 9:00 a.m. they didn't find a bomb. immediately following that all clear bart commuters were said they could expect eight to 12 minute delays through the coliseum station. right now there are no reported delays on any lines. abc 7 news. traffic is just inching along on southbound 101 in marin county near seminary drive and mill valley after a garbage truck overturned and blocked a couple lanes, the chp opened those lanes about 90 minutes after the accident that shut down the two left lanes but the damage was already done. i was stuck in that traffic. in fact, i was sitting there for so long i started shooting video on my iphone on the mounting thing on my windshield. i was stuck in that big delay. i got here about a minute and a half before airtime and sent that into the newsroom so

hopefully that stuff will be moving along very soon. everybody's stuck in there. we have breaking news to tell you about. a limo fire in have leia. you're looking at -- have v.a. laio. you're looking at fairgrounds drive outside the vallejo fairgrounds gas station and we understand the fire department has put it out. everyone got outokay so no injuries. however you can say vallejo fireworking that scene cleaning up after that limo was just charred. san francisco fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at an apartment complex that sadly resulted in a woman's death. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield joins us from park merced with the latest. amy? >> reporter: firefighters say there was evidence inside the burning apartment that the woman who lived there was a hoarder. . residents say they never saw fire but it was the smell that got their attention. there was an awful smell, they say, and they tell us she had

plastic items in her unit so they think they were smelling burning plastic. the fire alarm went off at the 13-story high-rise in san francisco. but most residents didn't take it seriously at first. >> we were laying there for an hour because this happens often and we realized it smelled outside and we came down. >> usually there's a fire alarm. we don't get out that much because it's a fake alarm most of the time. but today it was like serious. it was scary. >> reporter: the unit next door to hers was on fire and smoke was drifting out to the hallway. the woman inside the burning apartment home was found dead inside. residents out on the sidewalk still questioning whether there was anything serious going on did not know that the fire was a fatal one. >> oh, my goodness. wow. >> reporter: residents say the victim has lived here for years but they didn't know her well.

>> she live bid herself, no children, no family. and she usually keeps to herself. very private life. >> i knew her for 20 years but, yeah, she was -- she kept to herself until the last couple years. she was a nice woman. >> reporter: as fire investigators rummaged through the unit, they discovered multiple small fires burned in the unit. they haven't said why. they say there was evidence of hoarding inside the home. >> they had to move things away and i could see filthy piles everywhere. yeah, there was a lot of stuff. >> no information about the woman has been officially released yet, but residents are speculating she was in her 60s. firefighters are still trying to figure out what started the fires. there was no other damage done to the rest of the building. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

>> amy. thank you. it's shaming up to be a very hot weekend across the bay area. >> our meteorologist with a first look at our sizzling accuweather forecast. mike? >> thank you very much, ladies. good morning to you. i thought we'd use the roof cam to show you the sunshine over san francisco. this is one of the areas i'm forecasting a record high. the record right now is 282. it will be an old record when we break it 90 in richmond. 97 in san jose. oakland falls short, 89 and livermore is 101. you have to get to 112 to set a record. places like san jose right here, you can see it's not very hazy yet but the possibility of poor air quality is definite in the santa clara valley and that's we have a spare the air day also. happening now with this heat wave, one of the bay areas biggest festivals happening this

weekend is taking precautions. the gilroy garlic festival begins today with several new features to keep attendees safe. abc 7 news reporter nick smith is live in gilroy. nick? >> reporter: kristen, look at these people around me. this place is packed. what they've done this year for 2014 is they've introduced the gilroy garlic app. they want to make sure that all the attendees here find a way to stay cool, stay dry, stay hydrated and, should they need help, they have a new app to help them find it. where there's smoke there's fire. for 36 years, organizers at the annual gilroy garlic festival have decided to make a few adjustments in an effort to keep the celebration of their culinary gems fresh and attendees safe and comfortable on a day that could see record temps. brian beau is the festival's executive director. with thousands expected to attend, crews added canopies over cooking and event station, shade tents for folks to sit and

eat and this year rain rooms and misting stations when things get really hot. >> we have plenty of water, frozen lemonade, plenty of stuff to keep them hydrated. we have a couple free water booths so people can make sure they stay hydrated and enjoy their day. >> making it easier to folks to find a watering station or their group if they're separated. a technology upgrade. 2014 will introduce the downloadable gilroy garlic app. >> they can get the app, they can see it a moving map where they are in the park, how to get from point "a" to point "b.." >> >> reporter: and one of the things everyone attending a festival always finds themselves looking for one of these, a port a john. >> the air is going to get hot so it's going to be a hot one today. well, all weekend but we're ready. >> reporter: we found crews trying to get ahead of the heat by putting these in n place early. more than 240 port-a-johns will be set up around the park to accommodate the crowds. sun, garlic, and fun. who could ask for more? the garlic festival is strictly volunteer.

last year, the group gave back more than $350,000 to area nonprofits. this year they're on track to beat that number. in gilroy, nick smith, abc 7 news. we have developing news now in west africa. the investigation is getting under way this morning into the air algerie passenger plane that went down. a french military drone spotted the wreckage in neighboring mali on the edge of the sahara desert. the president of france says there are no survivors of flight 1517 and revised the death toll. a final passenger manifest shows there were 118 people on board, that's up from 116. nearly half the passengers were french. investigators have recovered one of the two black boxes. they believe the accident was most likely weather related but they have not ruled out terrorism. in eastern ukraine this morning, half a dozen experts from the netherlands and australia arrived at the crash site of malaysia airlines flight 17. a spokesperson says the dutch team found traces of more human remains. this morning, for a third day in a row, more planes arrived

carrying the bodies of 74 victims. malaysia airlines flight 17 was shot down over ukraine last week, killing all 298 people on board. both russia and ukraine deny any direct involvement in the missile attack. now to the crisis in the middle east. israel's security officials plan to meet today to discuss international cease-fire proposals. meanwhile, fighting between israel and hamas continues for the 18th straight day. the israeli military says it hit 45 sites in gaza, killing a leader of the militant islamic jihad group and two of his sons. the latest cease-fire proposal is a plan calling for a five day humanitarian truce during which time israel and hamas would negotiate political, economic, and security issues facing gaza. just ahead on abc 7 news at 11: 11:00, word pope francis is planning his first visit to the u.s. where he's going and when he'll

equipped with a camera from a nearby hotel to get the shots. the drone caused quite a stir, startling tourists on the observation deck and security guards who then called police. officers tracked down the drone's owner who told them he was from out of state and just bought it. laws on drones are not on the books yet but the faa has issued guideline which is include keeping it well below the height of the space needle and away from populated areas. pope francis is planning his first trip to the united states. according to a report in the catholic news service, the pontiff will attend the world meeting of families in philadelphia september of next year. philadelphia's archbishop says the pope accepted his invitation to come to the city of brotherly love. the pope has received invitations from other cities, including new york, washington, d.c., and the united nations. hundreds of thrill seekers will try to take life by the horns, as they say, and run with the bills in the east bay. the great bull run will be held tomorrow morning on the racetrack at the alameda county

>> how did they get that video? four college students from michigan have come up with a cool idea called the ring cam. a jewelry box with a tiny camera built right in. only the person proposing actually knows it there's so you're able to capture that genuine element of surprise. the ring cam inventors are planning to pitch their idea on abc's "shark tank." >> isn't there a little red light, though? you saw that? >> just a little clue. >> she was so dazzled by the diamond. >> right. exactly. don't even notice. we are going to notice the heat and it's a spare the air day. >> poor air quality in stan a clara valley but all of us should do our part not to drive or anything that will create more ozone in the atmosphere during the afternoon hours. it looks like the winds will pick up a bit tomorrow. keeping our fingers crossed that possibly we will not see a spare the air tomorrow. it's a beautiful picture of half dome right there. isn't that nice looking? i was going to use that as part of -- our -- headlines.

but i've got to fix something here on the computer. sorry about that. as soon as i get this fixed we'll get everything rolling here. a little bit of a hangup. all right, let's move on. there you go. visibility, live doppler 7, everybody doing well, even the clouds along the coast are lifting. you can see right here with our visible satellite that half moon bay is now out of the clouds and over the next hour or so most of the monterey bay. here's santa cruz where i saw them grooming the sand and it's getting a bit of a workout. it will be busy there today as we'll hit 91 degrees. 65 is the water temperature in san francisco. 60 in bodega bay, eight degrees warmer than average. five degrees warmer than average at half moon bay. there it is again. isn't that a grnls you picture? i just want to put that up be there because it would be nice to be there. cooler in the higher elevations today. record heat possible today. air quality poor and tracking humidity next week and

thankfully temperatures will pull back a little bit but that humidity comes in, man it will feel worse than the dry heat. cold front has moved on. now we're watching the high pressure and notice the northerly gradient. that will bring us the clearing along the coast today. probably not as sunny along the coast tomorrow and for sure sunday so if you like the beach and sunshine, go today. mid-to upper 90s down south. 100 in gilroy. 95 in san jose. we'll have low to mid-90s on the peninsula. upper 70s to near 80 along the coast. mid- 80s south sausalito. upper 80s berkeley and oak land. air conditioning and weather, you have to pay to stay comfortable. if you're going up to the sonoma county fair in santa rosa, 81 already. mid-80s by 7:00 and you'll need a coat by the end, 66. if you're going to the game tonight it will be in the mid-70s at 7:15. we'll drop down to the mid-60s.
