>> good morning, i'm in for katie marzullo. we have a quick check of the forecast. meteorologist lisa argen in this morning. >> good morning to you. we are starting out fog-free around parts of the bay but there is fog half moon bay, 4-mile visibility. temperatures are mild in some spots. 50s and 60s for the most part u see the nice clear shot from the sutro camera. 63 in san jose and 54 and fog half moon bay, low 60s in the cities. we are expecting more coastal fog this morning. the sea breeze kicks up this afternoon. the fog should dissipate but we are looking at a little bit of high clouds moving in from the south bay today.

otherwise breezier coast. still hot inland. we will detail the temperatures in your neighborhood in just a few minutes. katie. >> lisa, thank you. the blazing sun baked to the bay area yesterday, lead to go near record highs in some places and actual record highs in some places. in the east bay the fire got so hot firefighters responding to a house fire were forced to shift their tactics. neighbors dragged garden houses to try to save their own houses as they were fighting the fire we have the story. >> reporter: they lived in this home for two generations. >> it's a horrible thing for everybody. >> around dinnertime neighbors heard popping noises. they believe those pounds were two cars catching fire in the garage. >> i looked out and everything was in flames. and that's really heart stopping. >> the fire marshal estimates $100,000 in damage. >> if it had been windy we might

have had a bigger fire and bigger problem on our hands. >> half an acre burned. frankie grabs his garden hose as flames creeped down the hillside. >> if i don't put it out and some of the bigger trees get out of fire it will get out of control and i won't be able to do anything with the garden hose. that's what i was thinking. >> as he sprayed the water, the heat grabbed at him. >> firefighters are out fighting fires. and i have to than to them. >> bottle after bottle of water and others dumped it on their heads trying to cool off in 1 had been degree heat. >> because of the heat our firefighters didn't work as long which is why we went to a third arm so early. >> thankfully nobody, not even the family dog, was injured. and the neighbors said they will help the carpenters rebuild. >> a wildfire burning east of

sack nen toe has grown to 1300 acres. the fire broke out around 4:30 in the afternoon. it's on the boarder of the county about 50 miles east of sacramento. the fire is 20% contained this morning. homes in the area have been evacuated. authorities say at least three structures have been destroyed. another 250 are threatened. residents say they are on edge. >> you know, i'm really freaked out. i didn't think i would be this way. i'm a nurse with sacramento county, and i do disaster relief. and i've never been in this side of it. i didn't think it would feel like this. it's pretty scary. >> now no word on what started the fire. the park will remain open this weekend, but there will be no barbeques or open flames allowed today. developing news out of san jose where the chp has

reopened one lane on interstate 680 near capital express way because after fatal accident. they responded to the accident just after 11:00 last night. lanes were closed about a half-hour later at police investigated. lanes reopened just before 1:00. no word on what led to the accident. topthe crisis in the middle east. a 12-hour humanitarian cease-fire has begun. time to allow civilians to receive aid and evacuate to safer areas. a series of shells hit before it began. nearly 1,000 palestinians and 40 israelis have been killed. meanwhile a rally is planned in san francisco at justin herman plaza at 1:00 to protest war

crimes in palestine. people in bay area are reaching out to a local man who suffered a devastating loss in gaza. 30 members of his family were killed in a single airstrike. we have more from the muslim community center. >> this doctor, a dentist living in san jose, lost 30 of his family members in one day. three generations of aunts, uncles and cousins were living under the same roof in the gaza strict when the israeli airstrike hit their home last weekend. nobody survived. >> some were distant cousins but i have known some of them. it's extremely vicious to see 30 people die at the same time, one family, one building, all civilians >> the puts limb community of south san jose got together to mourn the death of his relatives and other palestinians from recent attacks. people in gaza were doing the same thing when they were killed. >> i basically told them that i'm sorry for your loss and may

god grant them -- god grant all of us paradise. >> we are all putting our hands and our hearts, we are afraid of this fighting all the time. >> the doctor has other relatives in gaza he's worried about. he was last in the region two years ago and said it's nearly impossible for him to go now. the boarders are sealed. he said the only thing he can do is pray and educate people about the conflict. in south san jose, abc7 news. a u.s. sea fighter in san jose plans to fire to israel and join the israeli army as soon as the lift is over. he has a three-round federal weight fight at the center and tomorrow the 30-year-old will board a plane for the 15 hour flight to israel. he lived there until 2009 when he moved to the bay area to train in mixed martial arts.

he said it's difficult watching the fighting and not being able to help. he believes it's his duty as an isreali to defend his homeland, no matter where the world he is living. a bay area native is among four journalists detained this morning in iran. jason is from marin county and has written for the chronicle. he was working in iran when he was taken into custody tuesday. the reason is not clear. you may remember the case of three berkeley hikers who were held in iran. josh and shane were released in september of 2011 after spending two years in prison. a third hiker, sarah, was released a year earlier. >> new details. the chief designer of the new eastern span of the bay bridge say tests show more than 2,000 bolts and rods do in the need to be replaced. the pieces were called into question after 32 other bolts cracked last year. but the san francisco chronicle reports bridge designer marlon

nader, told officials that the other 2200 bolts and rods on the span are likely to be more corrosion resistent than the 32 who failed. the final decision about replacing at least some of the main bolts is still pending. a popular beach is back open after a material substance watched up on shore along with thousands of dead fish. this is the few from sky 7hd yesterday afternoon. a yellow, doughy substance showed up on the beach and a kayaker reported seeing it on the water as well. first it was feared it was toxic so everyone was ordered out of the water and firefighters called in it to investigate. they now believe it's a natural substance and they lifted all restrictions. as for the thousands of dead anchovies, they say fish die-off is not unusual this time of year. the great bull run is scheduled today at the alameda county fair grounds and animal

activists plan to protest. 3,000 people are expected to raise down a quarter mile long track with 20 bulls running be behind them. it starts at 11:30. animals from the animal defense fundcy it's possible for bulls to be hurt or abused and they have filed a lawsuit to stop it. >> the veterinarians said there's a possibility an animal could get very serious hurt. >> they have rodeos all throughout california and on those events they are on their backs whipping or kick them with metal spurs. >> they say the humans are in more danger than the animals. one man in the nationwide tour suffered a broken pelvis but no animals have been hurt. we are coming off a hot day. >> we do. we have subtle changes that will cool off some folks closer to the coastline. here's a look from the roof camera. damages in the low 630s. today in san francisco as much

embassy suspended operations among the uprising that ultimately toppled the long time leader gadhafi. pope francis is plannings hi trip to the the united states. the pontiff will attend the world meeting of families in philadelphia in september of next year. philadelphia's archbishop said the pope accepted his invitation to come to the city of brotherly love. he's also received inrytation from cities including new york and washington, d.c. and the united nations. a strange object was scene hovering around seats's space needle the other night. it was a drone. others were amused to see it, others not so much. >> right there high in the seattle sky is a drone. the faa now telling abc news it is looking into that tiny remote control powered aircraft hovering above the observation deck of the famous space needle.

while curious tourists waved, the object gave security quite a scare. police say a man launched the drone right out of his hotel window. >> there was no bad intent. he wasn't trying do anything wrong. >> but it does raise questions about whether it's safe to fly drones above crowded city. take a look at this drone buzzing over the busy streets of new york last year and crash landing, nearly hitting pedestrian at the height of rush hour. and there also have been close calls with airplanes. >> a drone. >> a drone coming last year within 200 feet of a jumbo jet. drones like these are exploding in popularity, but the rules already in place for how and where they can fly haven't been finalized yet. the faa is working on guidelines but it could be a couple more years before they take effect. until then police will keep their eyes on the sky. abc news, los angeles.

the earth had a close call with a solar storm a few years ago. a weather model from n.a.s.a. shows the mass ejection blasting through space in july of 2012. it did not hit the earth burks it did come close. researchers say if the flare had happened one week earlier, earth would have taken a direct hit. scientists say people would not have been physically harmed, but communications systems could have been knocked out and damage could have exceeded $2 trillion in the u.s. alone. safe way shareholders have approved a $9.2 billion sale of the company to albert sons. the media partner the contra costa times reports shareholders approved the sale yesterday. the deal still needs to clear a review by the federal trade commission. it will create a network of more than 2,000 stores, including distribution facility and manufacturing plants. network will have more than 250,000 employees. good news if you want to

much as 10 degrees in the city. that's big. yesterday you saw a record downtown. 85 in san francisco. mountain view 95. record in san rafael. and richmond 87 degrees. today all of those locations will be cooler but the most significant cooling will happen here along the coast. and locally around the bay. but inland still the possibility of some temperatures upwards of 100 degrees. so the fog is forming south. it's all along the central coast and patchy around half moon bay. it's cool, too, in the 50s in some shots. from the future tower camera you see the clear shot here. 54 half moon bay. gilroy 58. and today well into the 90s. and 63 san jose and san carlos as well as oakland n the city low 60s. from emeryville this morning it is nice and clear out there with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s in santa rosa. look at the delta. 71 degrees. the win are pretty calm. so that is setting the stage for

another warm day there. but the winds are going to kick up and that will cool the coast off. concord and livermore once again today well into the 90s. perhaps a couple degrees cooler than yesterday. we are going to keep the cooling confined to the shoreline. hot again this weekend, especially inland, but cooler around the coast and bay today. that includes berkeley, oakland, richmond, parts of the north bay, and a few high clouds in the south bay today. more so tomorrow. increasing the relative humidity. we've seen the pattern. and doesn't look like we will see thunderstorms out of this, but with the ridge of high pressure in place here, it is huge. you will see all the way to the midwest. and the heat will hang on once again inland across much of the state. but with the surface gradients changing today, that means we will see not only increase in some high clouds but later on this afternoon and tonight, but the sea breeze kicks up. as we go through the rest of the day tomorrow, the early morning hours, you notice more significant high clouds all

across the bay area. today just portions mainly in the south bay late in the afternoon. has been suppose hod a hot one at 90. 95 in morgan hill. look for 90 cupertino. 78 santa cruz. 87 redwood city and mountain view. but the coast, a nice afternoon with 68 in pacifica, half moon bay 67. the southwest winds kicking up to about 20 miles an hour today. san francisco 74. 90 in santa rosa, 92 sonoma. 85 vallejo. upper 70s in berkeley today with 82 in newark. 85 in fremont. you head inland and look at the dark reds here. not only a hot day again today but we could see about 100 degrees in antioch. 96 in pleasanton, as well as fairfield. so we are looking at a very warm day today. upper 90s in gilroy. boy, it will be hot there. you can smell the garlic in the air. love it. the temperatures will be hot

>> welcome back. we are starting in half hour with a quick look at the weather. here's lice. >> good morning, katie. winds are up a little bit in the higher elevation but that's not keeping the temperatures down. in the 60s in the upper elevations but in the 350s at the surface and some fog is forming along half moon bay. with 4-mile visibility and temperatures in the 50s there. look at the delta. 71 degrees and 55 in novato. it's already a big disparity. 54 santa rosa and 56 livermore. changes come with cooler conditions along the coast, around the bay. san francisco about ten degrees cooler so no records expected. full sunshine starting out. we look for temperatures to warm quickly around the bay with plenty of 80s by the bay shore. about 90 in san jose and some high clouds moving up late in the day. upper 90s to near 100 inland and we will talk about in detail more of the cooling around the coast and bay and the extent of that outlook which includes more heat. katie. >> thank you, lisa.

the heat wave comes at a time when concerns about the drought are rising and conservation efforts have fallen short of goals. can water customers do the renting while the lawns and kids are suffering in the heat? we look at the challenge. this lawn has brown spots but it's clearly not suffering of a sprinkling has been cutback by two-thirds. the magic formula according to the landscape expert, don, is to reduce the amount of water gradually. touch test will let you know when the grass needs water to survive. >> after you step on it or mow it, the grass doesn't pop up from the step or the mower wheels, it's time. >> still, valley water district is pushing the brown is the new green and that demonstrates your commitment to saves water. lawn care carefree to residents. but there are other ways to cutback. cut the water from the shower

moving headquarters overseas is unstateotic. he denounced tax inversions. he said companies of renouncing their citizenship to avoid paying their fair share. the president said the best way to address the problem is through tax reform that lowers the corporate tax rate. >> i want to be clear. there's only a few big corporations so far. the vast majority of american businesses pay their tacks right here in the united states. but when some customers cherry pick their taxes, it adds to the deficit and makes it harder to invest in the things that will keep america strong. >> the president says companies should not be allowed to pick and choose which rules to follow. if you are one of those drivers who sometimes resorts to using the marked transit-only lanes in downtown san francisco, listen up. you don't want to do that jeanmar. especially not on market street. vic lee explains.

[horn honking] >> reporter: on average, muni makes 63,000 trips on market street every week. the transit-only lanes on market and on several other streets in the city are supposed to make it easier for buses and taxis to move through crowded downtown traffic. other drivers can use them, but only to make an immediate turn to the next street. but many cars like this one ignore the transit-only lanes which are spelled out in big white letters. >> this is every day, all day. very frustrating. >> mary ann mueller is a bus operator. >> a lot of times it's for people to travel down the lane because the other lane is open. bicyclist, they don't want to ows their own lane because maybe of the congestion of the cars. >> muni hopes to change that. they will color the transit-only lapse on market between fifth and twelfth. their choice of color, bright red, like a warning that it's a place you shouldn't be in. and just to be sure cameras on buses capture the violators, and

>> eight new k-9 officer are ready to join the patrol. they graduated from training yesterday. they were at a ceremony in sacramento. this is the first class of k-9 officers for 2014. the dogs will not only work with their human partners, they will live with them and they are specially trained to help fight drug trafficking. >> they will show you where the drugs are coming from and also money going through the door. and also from people and they will try to find criminals also
