>> good morning, i'm katie marzullo. 6:00 a.m. on saturday morning. we will start off with a quick check of the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, katie. already we have a 15-degree spread from where we have the fog. half moon bay, the inland locations. some locations reporting in the 70s. the sea breeze kicks up today. take a look at the super tower camera. within the last 30 minutes we've really seen the marine layer and the clouds and fog move back across the city. so some changes coming in your neighborhood today. 58 in gilroy with 53 in oakland,

as well as san carlos and san jose. so here is the plan. the low clouds and fog, what we have of them will dissipate. and then we will be looking for full sunshine. but the sea breeze kicks up today and that will allow for cooling along the coast, around the bay. but we will see temperatures once again well into the 90s. perhaps a few areas with triple digit heat. we will detail that for you and talk about the 10 degrees of cooling forecasted today. katie. >> thank you. we have breaking news right now in san jose where crews are work to go put out a five-alarm fire near spartan stadium. the fire broke ought around 3:30 this morning at a warehouse at south center street and east alma avenue. there are two wear hows at the location and at least one structure has been damaged and one person injured. no word on the extent of that person's injuries. the cause of the fire is under investigation. keep an eye on this one more you this morning. the blazing sun baked the bay

area yesterday, leading to near record highs in some places and in the east bay it got so hot, firefighters responding to a house fire were forced to shift their tactics. neighbors dragged garden houses to try to save their own houses as they were fighting the fire we have the story. >> reporter: the carpenter family has lived in this home for two generations. >> it's a horrible thing for everybody. >> around dinnertime neighbors heard popping noises. they believe those sounds were two cars catching fire in the garage. >> i looked out and everything was in flames. and that's really heart stopping. >> the fire marshal estimates $100,000 in damage. it could have been worse. >> if it had been windy we might have had a bigger fire and bigger problem on our hands. >> reporter: half an acre burned. and three nearby homes were threatened. this video shows frankie

grabbing his garden hose as the flames creeped down the hillside. >> if i don't put it out and some of the bigger trees get out of fire it will get out of control and i won't be able to do anything with the garden hose. that's what i was thinking. >> as he sprayed the smoking grass, the heat grabbed at him. >> evening as the flames went down, you could still roast marshmallows on them. firefighters are out fighting fires. and i have to hand it to them. >> they drank bottle after bottle of water and others dumped it on their heads trying to cool off in the 100-degree heat. >> because of the heat our firefighters can't work as long, which is why we went to a third arm so early. >> thankfully nobody, not even the family dog, was injured. and the neighbors said they will help the carpenters rebuild. in lafayette," tiffany wilson, abc7 news. >> a wildfire burning east of sacramento has grown to 1300 acres. the sandoval fire broke out around 4:30 yesterday afternoon.

it's on the border of the county about 50 miles east of sacramento. the fire is 20% contained this morning. homes in the area have been evacuated. authorities say at least three structures have been destroyed. another 250 are threatened. residents say they are on edge. >> you know, i'm really freaked out. i didn't think i would be this way. i'm a nurse with sacramento county, and i do disaster relief. and i've never been in this side of it. i didn't think it would feel like this. it's pretty scary. >> no word on what started the fire. >> the fire danger at a park is very high right now the park will remain open this weekend, but there will be no barbeques or open flames allowed today. developing news out of san jose where the chp has reopened all lanes on interstate 680 near capital express way because after fatal accident. they responded to the accident just after 11:00 last night. an alert was issued a half-hour

later and lanes were closed about a half-hour later at police investigated. lanes reopened just before 1:00. no word on what led to the accident. to the crisis in the middle east. a 12-hour humanitarian cease-fire has begun. time to allow civilians to receive aid and evacuate to safer areas in gaza. a series of shells hit before it began. over the past 19 days nearly 1,000 palestinians and 40 , israelis have been killed. u.s. secretary of state john kerry is set to meet with foreign ministers in france today to broker a permanent cease-fire. meanwhile a rally is planned in san francisco at justin herman plaza at 1:00 to protest war crimes in palestine. people in bay area are reaching out to a local man who suffered a devastating loss in gaza. 30 members of his family were killed in a single airstrike. abc7 news reporter alisa

harrington has more from the muslim community center. >> this doctor, a dentist living in san jose, lost 30 of his family members in one day. three generations of aunts, uncles and cousins were living under the same roof in the gaza strip when the israeli airstrike hit their home last weekend. nobody survived. >> some were distant cousins but i have known some of them. it's extremely vicious to see 30 people die at the same time, one family, one building, all civilians >> the muslim community of south san jose got together to mourn the death of his relatives and other palestinians from recent attacks. supporters broke fast together and family members in gaza were doing the same thing when they were killed. >> i basically told him that i'm sorry for your loss and may god grant them -- god grant all of us paradise. >> we are all putting our hands

and our hearts, we are afraid of this fighting all the time. >> the doctor has other relatives in gaza he's worried about. he was last in the region two years ago and said it's nearly impossible for him to go now. the borders are sealed. he said the only thing he can do is pray and educate people about the conflict. in south san jose, abc7 news. a u.s. sea fighter in san jose plans to fire to israel and join the israeli army as soon as the match is over. he has a three-round featherweight fight at the center and tomorrow the 30-year-old will board a plane for the 15 hour flight to israel. he lived there until 2009 when he moved to the bay area to train in mixed martial arts. he said it's difficult watching the fighting and not being able to help. he believes it's his duty as an isreali to defend his homeland, no matter where the world he is living. a bay area native is among four journalists detained this morning in iran.

jason is from marin county and has written for "the chronicle." he was working in iran when he was taken into custody tuesday. the reason is not clear. you may remember the case of three berkeley hikers who were held in iran. josh and shane were released in september of 2011 after spending two years in prison. a third hiker, sarah, was released a year earlier. >> new details. the chief designer of the new eastern span of the bay bridge say tests show more than 2,000 bolts and rods do not need to be replaced. the pieces were called into question after 32 other bolts cracked last year. but the san francisco chronicle reports bridge designer marlon nader, told officials that the other 2200 bolts and rods on the span are likely to be more corrosion-resistent than the 32 that failed. the final decision about replacing at least some of the main bolts is still pending.

a popular beach is back open after a mysterious substance watched up on shore along with thousands of dead fish. that was in cap toll law beach. this is the few from sky 7hd yesterday afternoon. a yellow, doughy substance showed up on the beach and a kayaker reported seeing it on the water as well. first it was feared it was toxic so everyone was ordered out of the water and firefighters called in it to investigate. health officials now believe it's a natural substance and they lifted all restrictions. as for the thousands of dead anchovies, they say fish die-off is not unusual this time of year. the great bull run is scheduled today at the alameda county fairgrounds and animal activists plan to protest. 3,000 people are expected to raise down a quarter mile long track with 20 bulls running be behind them. it starts at 11:30. representatives from the animal legal defense fund say it's possible bulls will be hurt or abused. they have filed a lawsuit to

developing news. the state department has shut down the u.s. embassy in libya and evacuated americans because of worsening clashes between rival militias. the state department in a statement said the american embassy staffers left tripoli today for tanzania. operations in tripoli will be suspended until the security situation improves. in 2011 the embassy suspended operations among the uprising that ultimately toppled the long time leader gadhafi. pope francis is plannings a trip to the united states. it's his first trip to the united states. they report that the pontiff will attend the world meeting of families in philadelphia in september of next year. philadelphia's archbishop said the pope accepted his invitation to come to the city of brotherly love. the pope has received invitations from other cities, including new york and washington, d.c., and the united

nations. a strange object was seen hovering around seattle's space needle the other night. it was a drone. some were amused to see it, others not so much. the abc news reporter has the video. >> right there high in the seattle sky is a drone. the faa now telling abc news it is looking into that tiny remote-control powered aircraft hovering above the observation deck of the famous space needle. while curious tourists waved, the mysterious flying object gave security quite a scare. police say a man launched the drone right out of his hotel window. >> there was no malintent or malice, he wasn't trying to do anything wrong. >> but it does raise questions about whether it's safe to fly drones above crowded cities. take a look at this drone buzzing over the busy streets of new york last year and crash landing, nearly hitting pedestrian at the height of rush hour. and there also have been close calls with airplanes. >> i see a drone.

>> a drone coming last year within 200 feet of a jumbo jet. drones like these are exploding in popularity, but the rules already in place for how and where they can fly haven't been finalized yet. the faa is working on guidelines but it could be a couple more years before they take effect. until then, police will keep their eyes on the sky. abc news, los angeles. the earth had a close call with a solar storm a few years ago. two years ago. a weather model from n.a.s.a. shows the corona mass ejection blasting through space in july of 2012. it did not hit the earth, but it did come close. researchers say if the flare had happened one week earlier, earth would have taken a direct hit. scientists say people would not have been physically harmed, but communications systems could have been knocked out and damage could have exceeded $2 trillion in the u.s. alone. safeway shareholders have

approved a $9.2 billion sale of the company to albertsons. our media partner the contra costa times reports shareholders approved the sale yesterday. the deal still needs to clear a review by the federal trade commission. it will create a network of more than 2,000 stores, including a distribution facility and manufacturing plants. network will have more than 250,000 employees. good news if you want to change cell phone carriers but they will want you to give up your phone. the house of representatives approved a bill yesterday that will legally allow you to unlock your phone. in 2012 the librarian of congress ruled that a copyright violation to unlock a phone without a carrier's permission, even if your phone is paid off and your contract is up. the president is expected to sign the bill into law. president obama said it will give americans more flexibility and

degrees this morning. but still pretty filed in the 60s from san carlos and san jose. 58 in gilroy. but get this. 90s today at the garlic festival. yesterday was 101. half moon bay 57. san francisco was at 60 degrees. our east bay hills camera, you see the haze out there. high pressure is in control. but surface features, the wind flow will allow for cooling today. 54 in novato and 58 napa, good morning livermore, 66 degrees. sunshine here, but clouds around parts of the south bay and the peninsula this morning. we will see more high clouds into the picture later on today. so hot inland today. some cooling around the coast and bay, and a few high clouds later on today. more so tomorrow with the relative humidity coming up a bit but still we are looking at very dry conditions and high fire danger, of course, as this huge dome of high pressure continues to bring the numbers

>> this is abc7 news. >> welcome back. as the clock strikes 6:30 and we are starting this half-hour. here's lisa argen. >> good morning. here's a look from the east bay hills camera. you see all the haze out here. it's 7 trees warm by the delta, five degrees warmer than this time yesterday in napa. that means we are going to see another warm day today inland. the changes come your way. closer to the coast and bay. look at santa rosa at 353. it's 58 napa. plenty of fog along the coast. also around half moon bay. even in san francisco we are looking at visibility less than a quarter of a mile. so with the high pressure ridge push being down on the atmosphere, we are looking at a stronger sea breeze today so those elements coming into play to bring a wide range of temperatures from the upper 350s half moon bay, mid-70s in san francisco, and down 11 degrees today.

90 in san jose. near 80 oakland. still, triple digits perhaps in our inland valleys. we will talk about it in detail and look at the warm forecast in the week ahead coming up. >> thank you, the heat wave comes at a time when concerns about the drought are rising and conservation efforts have fallen short of goals. can water customers do the lawns and the kids are suffering in the heat? we look at the challenge. this lawn has brown spots but it's clearly not suffering of a sprinkling has been cutback by two-thirds. the magic formula, according to the landscape expert, don, is to reduce the amount of water gradually. the touch test will let you know when the grass needs water to survive. >> after you step on it or mow it, the grass doesn't pop up from the step or the mower wheels, it's time. >> still, valley water district is pushing the brown is the new

green, and that demonstrates your commitment to saves water. lawn care carefree to residents. but there are other ways to cutback. cut the water from the shower and use it later to water plants. in the midst of a heat wave, what about kiddie pools? kids need to cool off. >> it's wonderful to treat your kids to that, but after you are done with the kiddie pool, how about taking the water out with a bucket and water your plants with it. >> this lawn decided to indulge the kids with a pool but they are making sure they know we are in drought. she set down water-saving pools. >> we aren't refilling it and make them save. that way they know it is drought season, but they still have to get wet because it's too hot out here for them. >> other families are turning to public fountains and use recirculated water like this one at san jose cesar chavez park.

pro tem bill steinberg will become acting governor. until he leaves for chicago on wednesday and then assembly speaker tony atkins will take the role for about 9 hours until governor brown returns. new this morning, president said a loophole that lets companies dodge u.s. taxes by moving their headquarters overseas is unpatriotic. in his weekly address the president denounces tax inversions. he said companies of renouncing their citizenship to avoid paying their fair share. the president said the best way to address the problem is through tax reform that lowers the corporate tax rate. >> i want to be clear. there's only a few big corporations so far. the vast majority of american businesses pay their taxes right here in the united states. but when some customers cherry picks their taxes, it adds to the deficit and makes it harder to invest in the things that will keep america strong. >> the president says companies should not be allowed to pick and choose which rules to follow. if you are one of those

drivers who sometimes resorts to using the marked transit-only lanes in downtown san francisco, listen up. you don't want to do that anymore. especially not on market street. vic lee explains. [horn honking] >> reporter: on average, muni makes 63,000 trips on market street every week. the transit-only lanes on market and on several other streets in the city are supposed to make it easier for buses and taxis to move through crowded downtown traffic. other drivers can use them, but only to make an immediate turn to the next street. but many cars like this one ignore the transit-only lanes which are spelled out in big white letters. >> this is every day, all day. very frustrating. >> mary ann mueller is a bus operator. >> a lot of times it's for people to travel down the lane because the other lane is open. -- or so congested. bicyclists, they don't want to

use their own lane because maybe of the congestion of the cars. >> muni hopes to change that. they will color the transit-only lapse on market between fifth and twelfth streets. their choice of color, bright red, like a warning that it's a place you shouldn't be in. and just to be sure cameras on buses capture the violators, and parking in red zones. parking control officer jack wang is looking at video of a ran double parked blocking the bus access in the red zone. >> we use video evidence and the camera to monitor. they take license plates. >> the license plate identifies the owner of the vehicle, who is sent a citation through the mail. muni tried this as a pilot program on church street transit-only lanes by 16th. coloring it red helped muni move more quickly. >> it helped in the morning. the travel time through there by at least 20%. >> muni hopes drivers begins realizing the red carpet is only for muni's vip, very important passengers.

vic lee, abc7 news. oyster lovers, you can rejoice for now, oyster levels. oyster company will get to harvest nor at least another 30 days. retail operation was set to close next thursday but the national park service has agreed to let harvesting continue another month. that's in response to a last-ditch injunction request by restaurants, bars and other businesses that rely on the drake bay oysters. the business provides more than a third of california's oysters. a hearing is set for september 9th. there's a bona fide american hero in town this weekend. 45 years ago every person in the world watched every step he took. yesterday those very same legs brought him to abc7 for a few minutes with reporter wane freedman. >> this is the object and here's the man. as long as we recall and remember history, they will always be linked. >> what is it like knowing that your name will be remembered forever?

san jose with 57 in the garlic capital. half moon bay, less than a quarter mile visibility. 60 in the city. here's a look at the haze as high pressure continues to build. there is poor air quality, high fire danger and another day of high temperatures from concord to livermore. low 50s in santa rosa. the southwest wind that's correct usually works to cool the north bay down in san francisco. that's already hang. we will look for cooler temperatures there. but elsewhere very little change. san jose in the 90s again today. so hot inland this weekend. cooler at the coast and bay. a few high clouds in the south bay. maybe in the east bay. and more so tomorrow. the relative humidity comes up, as well. we aren't looking at any thunderstorm activity. look at how huge the dome of high pressure is. this has allowed for the heat to hang on all weekend long inland. most of us are used to this. i have the feeling more heat is

coming back today when you shall starting out warmer in napa and also in the east bay. but also where the changes become more significant as the sea breeze kicks up today. a few high clouds, not making for a whole lot of change. but that will allow for perhaps some of the temperatures to be tempered today. and this starts out later on today and goes through tomorrow with the return flow around the high pressure ridge allowing for a little more humidity, a little more in the way of clouds cover. statewide, 101 yosemite, sacramento. 104 here. and 78 san diego. and 72 in monterey. even kind of mild there. lots of clouds along the central coast right now. those will clear. we will also see the clearing in the city for a high of 74 today. 67 half moon bay. ocean beach should see highs in the 60s with 74 in stinson today. point reyes about 70. 87 san rafael. south wind allowing for the
