i don't know why people want to hurt other people. >> a neighborhood in shock after a 5-year-old was stabbed in the throat. his mother stabbed to death. both by a man they barely knew. good evening. thank you for joining us. the attacks happened this morning in vallejo. a 43-year-old has been booked on suspicion of murder. abc 7 news reporter has more on the crime that has shaken the neighborhood. >> it is shocking to me. i don't understand it. >> no one understands the chaos that erumtd in the small home on marin street. this morning a woman who was

temporarily staying here with her two young sons was attacked. police say darrell wakefield, a parolee who just got out of prison a month ago, is the one responsible. >> this is a very violent individual. >> the suspect was originally busted for burglary but did extra time for his violent acts while in prison. once released he only recently met the victim who police say he did not have a romantic relationship with. but for some reason he showed up at 2:00 a.m. and stabbed her to death. then stabbed her youngest son. >> any time you have someone who is killed and a 5-year-old involved, yes, that speaks to rage. >> the woman's 8-year-old who may have been hiding during the attack ran to this neighbor's house for help. >> it is really sad. i feel bad for the little kid. he was involved for no reason. >> police quickly mobilized and started a manhunt.

six hours later, he was arrested here. he was just walking up the street and this is just two miles from the crime scene. those who live nearby are shocked by it all. >> that's awful. the man is a mess, you know? what would drive him to do something crazy like that? >> police have not release ad motive. abc 7 news. a carport fire in mountain view has injured one person and damaged a dozen others. this happened just after 5:00. fire officials stay two-alarm also damaged adjacent car wash equipment and nearby apartments sustained smoke damage. no details have been released but we know it was not a firefighter. investigators are still searching for what caused the fire. >> san jose crews are battling a vegetation crews that broke out this afternoon near quiksilver county park. firefighters contained the blaze

two hours ago. they'll stay overnight to get the fire under full control and monitor the area. cal fire says no structures were damaged and no injuries reported. turning to the crisis in the middle east. today hamas rejected the proposal to extend the 12-hour humanitarian cease fire. not much later hamas launched more rockets into israel of israel said it had extended the cease fire by 24 hours but added it will return fire if hamas fires more rockets. people in gaza rushed to do errands and tried to withdraw money from atms. others spent the day sorting through destroyed homes and burying their dead. the violence in the region has people in the bay area calling for an end in the bloodshed. a large group gathered at justen herman that's what. this is where the reporter is live with more. >> reporter: these large

demonstrations are often organized whenever there is tension between israel and the palestinians. today well over a thousand people turned out for this event. they demonstrate through the streets of san francisco for more than four hours. a few thousand people filled the streets and the demonstration of support for palestinians in gaza. for participants we talked to, the rising death toll of kids, most disturbing to watch. >> i can't stand when i see children, the bloodshed of children. >> i want it to stop. i'm on nobody's side. i'm for the kids. >> they are calling for a cease fire. something the deputy general said is already in effect. >> this was requested by the u.n. the humanitarian organizations and the united states. unfortunately at this moment it seems like a one-sided cease fire. hamas has been firing rockets. >> reporter: the large group demonstrators carried a long white ribbon with the name of people they say have been killed in gaza over the last few days.

they stopped and one demonstrator hoisted an israeli flag into the air and despite the group's efforts to obstruct the view, it was clear it was lit on fire. the group ended with the familiar refrain at these events. >> free, free palestine! >> reporter: then a shouting match. a british family on holiday stopped to ask questions of the demonstrators and touched a nerve. >> you guys sit down and eat popcorn while this is going on. >> police separated them from the family members. >> a usc fighter is headed to israel tomorrow to jones the israeli army. he grew up in israel but moved to israel in 2009. he said it is his duty as an israeli to defend his holeland no matter where in the world he's living. >> right now the american

that did not break the record of 110. 100 in fairfield and concord and 101 in antioch and livermore. temperature are coming down a little bit. i'll have the neighborhood numbers and i'll let you know where we could see a threat of thunderstorms. >> thank you so much. authorities have evacuated 200 more homes as the fire continues to burn. fire officials had already evacuated nearly 300 homes north of plymouth about 40 miles east of sacramento. the wildfire has burned more than six square miles sense 5:00 friday afternoon. cal fire says it is 20% contained. hundreds of firefighters are battling strong winds, severe drought, rugged terrain and triple digit temperatures. the fire has destroyed five home and seven outbuildings. a 200-pound slow-moving tortoise named abe somehow survived the fire.

he was left at an animal resort yesterday. the fire destroyed much of the resort. firefighters found abe alive this morning when the flames died down. evacuations are underway in the mariposa community because of a fire near yosemite national park. the fire has burned more than 500 acres since it began overnight. this is view of the plume of smoke from the national park services dome camera. you can see how thick and heavy the smoke was by late this evening. there's no word on the cause but there were dozens of lightning strikes in the area overnight. happening now, the gates are up and so are the tents. crews are prepping the streets of san francisco for tomorrow's 37th running of the city's traditional marathons and half marathons. the first wave of runners take off in a matter of hours from the same place they're finish. the embarcadero at mission street. more than 2,500 run letters take part. the race runs past the building,

we're learning more about a terrifying flight. a jet escorted back to the airport by fighter jets because of a passenger's strange behavior. >> heads up! >> a canadian s.w.a.t. team stormed the flight in toronto. terrified passengers obeyed

he's going to take our chum bag! he took our chum bag! >> yes, he did. a close encounter with a great white shark. this video has gone viral since being posted on youtube. they estimate the shark is about 16 feet long which would make it one of the largest ever seen on the east coast. a home grown wildlife refuge center is about to get a makeover. they are making an even larger home to care for more animals and get them back into the wild. it is a dream come true for this couple. over more than 30 years, lake tahoe wildlife care has hemmed an encredible 24,000 wild animals. the rescue center cares for a huge variety of injured and orphaned creatures and they don't play favorites. >> everything is so special in its own way. >> this is the only place in the state licensed to care for bear cubs. they have nine right now.

>> every year is different. >> the goal is to release every animal back into the wild. the nonprofit center was started by sheryl and tom who run it out of their own home in lake tahoe. >> we couldn't afford any buildings. >> sheryl is a former nurse turned wild animal experts. their backyard is packed with custom animal enclosures, created for creatures that like to climb or need room to fly or a peaceful place to recuperate. >> a yellow bellied marmot. >> there is a constant stream every day. >> he has missing tail feathers. i would say the cat got him. >> reporter: volunteers hem with feeding which can require a lot of patience. teeny animals eat only a tiny amount at a time so they have to be fed constantly. this little guy is a two-week old chip monk. >> the wildlife center is so successful it is running out of

room. when they first moved here, there were very few other houses. but over the years, a neighborhood grew up. so it is not such a great spot for wild animals anymore. and there is another issue. >> i am getting old. and it is time i handed it over. i want the wildlife center to keep progressing and keep growing. >> reporter: now after years of searching and generous donations from animal lovers, it is about to get a new home. >> on a scale of 1-10, bits a 50. >> if all goes as planned, they will move to the 27 acre property in south lake tahoe in about two years. the first phase will include a care taker's home and a veterinarian who already provides free care for the animals and of course there will be fabulous housing for future patients. >> at least double, triple or quadruple the size of the current cages that we have. >> reporter: they have more than $3 million for the project already but need at least a
