making news in america this morning, freak storm. a crowded beach rocked by a bolt of lightning, catching people offguard. >> there was a lightning bolt, and it hit here and then it hit over there. it was scary. plus a tornado tears through a neighborhood, taking homes and everything else in its path. deadly crash, a pilot is forced to put his plane down on a beach. with a father and daughter in its path. new reaction from witnesses. spreading fast, an ebola outbreak in africa is now the largest on record and taking a toll on the people trying to help the victims, including two americans. and fan-bot, the high-tech answer to a baseball team's poor attendance.

good monday morning to you, i'm devin dwyer. >> i'm reena ninan. we begin with severe weather swooping down on the west coast and across the south. a tornado maybe to blame for this wild scene in eastern tennessee. a homeowner captured the dangerous storm on camera last night. and southern california, a freak storm took aim at two popular tourist areas. lightning claimed the life of a man on venice beach and injured 13 other people. susan saulny has the story. >> reporter: a california beach day turned chaotic, then deadly in a flash. a rare summertime storm unleashed bolts of lightning on the oceanfront of los angeles, making direct hits on venice beach, crowded with swimmers and surfers on a sunday afternoon. >> it sounded like a sonic boom. >> like a -- >> all hell broke loose. >> reporter: throngs of people scrambled for safety, some stuck lying face down in the sand. others were rattled.

life guards rushed to help the victims, performing cpr, looking for missing swimmers. >> another scuba diver pulled out, resuscitated him. >> first responders took nine people to hospitals. for one victim, it was too late. the los angeles coroner confirmed that a 20-year-old man died from his injuries. off the coast, jolts hit catalina island, injuring a golfer. extreme weather also took a tool in the midsection of the country and along the atlantic coast. >> looks like a war zone to me. >> reporter: damaging winds in lexington, kentucky, took down trees. 20,000 homes and business in the dark after this sight over louisville's ballpark. in claiborne county, tennessee, a devastating amount of debris. and they remain in harm's way. thunderstorms are expected to be severe across the ohio valley and through the mid-atlantic states this morning. lightning continues to be a serious concern. susan saulny, abc, washington. and hot, dry weather

challenging fire crews in northern california. battling two major fires there. they face another day of triple digit temperatures and gusty winds. the sand fire, east of sacramento, destroyed ten homes and forced hundreds of residents to evacuate. >> the sheriff came to the door, and said you have to evacuate. now. >> i have my stuff loaded, truck's pointed out the driveway. all i can do is preventing at this point. >> the other is burning near yosemite national park and has forced evacuations in two communities nearby. it has not affected anything in the park itself. a live update from yosemite coming up on "good morning america". and millions of people bracing for another day of stormy weather. >> wacky weather. meteorologist jim dickey is tracking it all. hi, jim, good morning to you. >> good morning. an unseasonably warm air mass filter into the east, causing plenty of trouble across the country. produced severe thunderstorms

all throughout weekend. across the midwest, the ohio valley. now as it noses to the eastern seaboard. low pressure into new england. that's going to produce widespread, heavy rain, drenching thunderstorms. not expecting the severe weather event of the last few days. but flooding will be a concern, raining heavily at times. the cooler air filters all the way into the southeast, along the system's cold front. we will see storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail. and on to the southwest, moisture into the four corners, widespread thunderstorms into the afternoon and evening. back to you. >> thanks so much, jim. strong words overnight from the u.n. security council, calling for an immediate and unconditional humanitarian ceasefire in the war between israel and hamas. said a ceasefire would allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to gaza. the palestinians and the israelis both criticized the statement. the pace of fighting seems to have slowed this morning there. the israeli military says it hasn't carried out any attacks in gaza since 9:30 p.m. last

night. it says troops are pressing on with efforts to destroy the cross-border tunnels constructed by hamas for attacks inside israel. a day at the beach for a father and daughter took a tragic turn when a small plane made a crash landing. here's where it came down, the pilot telling a nearby control tower he would not make it to the airport, picking the beach instead. the father was killed, and the little girl critically injured when the aircraft came down right at the water's edge. this teenager was nearby. >> not something you see every day, that's for sure. i was not expecting to come to the beach and see a plane on the ground. the propeller was bent pretty bad and the dents on the wings and stuff. >> and the tragedy does not end there, the man's wife suffered cardiac arrest after the accident and was taken to the hospital. the costa concordia finished its final journey and is now tied up in an italian port. this time lapse footage shows

the end of the five-day journey to an italian port from where it capsized off the italian coast in 2012. other -- over the next two years, it will be demolished and the parts sold. 32 people died when the ship hit a reef and capsized. there's a deal in the works on capitol hill to fix the veterans health care system. top lawmakers have scheduled a news conference later today to reveal more details about the plan. the v.a. has been rocked by reports of patients dying awaiting treatment. and there's mounting evidence that workers falsified or omitted appointment schedules to mask frequent long delays. a major newspaper this morning is throwing its weight behind legalizing pot. "the new york times" is calling for an end to the federal ban on marijuana, which it says it far less dangerous than alcohol. the editorial says there are far more arrests for marijuana -- more for illegal drugs, rather. and a disproportionate amount of young, black men are caught up in it. marijuana was criminalized in 1980. now to a followup on a story

ome ba welcome back. well, many people won't find this surprising, the airline who's plane was shot down over ukraine may not be called malaysian any longer -- for much longer, that is. the carrier is looking at a name change and bringing in private investors to rebuild its business after two disasters in just six months. the wreckage of malaysian airlines flight to china in march still has not been found. despite global tensions, gas prices are dropping across the country. the average price for a gallon of gas is now $3.52 nationwide.

that's down 16 cents from last month. those prices have been down 24 days in a row. meanwhile, the stock markets hoping for a rebound from friday's slide, the dow dropped 123 points on friday and begins trading this morning below the 17,000 mark for the first time in nearly three weeks. friday's selloff was triggered by concerns about consumer spending after cautious comments from amazon and visa. >> it was beauty over brawn this weekend at the box office. "lucy," with scarlett johansson ingests a drug that gives her extraordinary ability. in its opening weekend, it more than covered its costs taking in $44 million. "hercules" was a distant second at $29 million. "dawn of the planet of the apes" slipped to third with 16. and you'll soon be able to choose your hotel room from your cell phone -- smartphone. this week hilton is announcing new technology to allow guests to open the doors to those rooms using their phones. some of the features roll out later this year.
