>> abc 7 news rts starts right now with live breaking news. >> breaking news in east san jose moments ago fire fighters put out a chiwild fire. officials say the grass fire burned at least 12 acres. you can see a ton of smoke there. no reports of injuries. fire crews say it started when a car caught on fire around 2:30 this afternoon near sierra an felter roads two miles north of the allen rock park. we will bring you updates as they develop online. >> good afternoon. >> those flames spread quickly in the north san jose foothills

because of steady winds. spencer. >> okay. let me give you a look right now. we will take you to the location of the fire where it is hot. it is dry. it is breezy. winds at the moment are out of the west, southwest an hour. there are gusts to 14 miles an hour. humidity is 28%. the temperature is 94 degrees. the peek of heating this afternoon may not have been reached yet. it could get a degree or two warmer before it started to cool down in the evening hours. it's hard to predict exactly what will happen in the winds but they've remained rather steady out of the west/southwest over the last hour or so. we don't expect any significant shift in the winds or change in humidity until perhaps after the sun goes down. larry and sheryl. >> all right spencer. >> about a dozen homes have been

evacuated in heywood. the swat team and bomb squad are at a home where authorities were trying to evict residents. deputies say they found suspicious notes inside the house. our reporter joins us live at the scene with the latest. nick. >> good afternoon. >> all of this continues to be a developing scene. if you look over my shoulder you can see that the crews are still in place. these are the law enforcement agents that have been here most of the morning. we have heard police call out over the loudspeaker several times. come out this is the heywood police. department, residents of the area are ordered to vacate the premises now but no one has emerged. this is a view from sky 7 hd. our cameras are over the scene the minute the call went out. since then we have seen a robot which is part of the bomb squad which will provide additional surveillance. law enforcement to areas that may not be safe for officers. the sergeant confirmed with me

that there are members of the police, the squat team and alamita team are at the scene, moving toward the house on gainsville avenue. weapons down, prepared to swing into action. sher iff deputies tried to he serve an eviction notice. i want you to hear that now. larry, i'm not sure if you and sheryl heard that. they said the canine movement is moving in. we saw the robots move in earlier. the robots what they do is provide a bit of surveillance if they aren't sure the scene is safe. since the robots have gone in.

we've seen three come out. now they are sending in the canine. that lets us know they feel they can send the canine unit in. they've sent out the warning the dog will bite. this is the announcement once again sheryl. >> very dramatic -- >> reporter: this is the announcement in spanish sheryl. we will stay on the scene. i may provide you an update before we're out of the 4:00 show. we will keep our eyes on this and send it back to you in the studio. >> nick, thank you so much. well in downtown san jose investigators say a man was stabbed to death early in morning near the tech museum and the san jose fairmont hotel. this is the 22nd homicide of the year and second in two days. our reporter reports people who live and work in the area are worried about the rising violence. >> reporter: a lot of popular events bring hundreds if not thousands of people to plaza de caesar chavez all year long. early this morning in san jose

it was the violent death of a man who brought dozens of police officers in the area. witnesses say five ore six men attacks another man at 2:15 this morning. they found the victim with at least one stab wound. he was taken to the hospital where he later died. police say it does not appear to be gang-related. there's a back pack directly behind me. clothing scattered. i don't know if that's related or not but our investigators will look into to see if there's any connection between the item that's were located an the homicide. >> a lot of people who work in the area are concerned about the violence. they say the park attracts a lot of transients and they often don't feel safe walking alone in the area. this week a couple hundred kids from fourth to 8th grade are are

attending a summer camp. >> the incident was tragic. like all downtown institutions, we are saddened by these events. we are supporting the authorities in any way we can. the fairmont hotel has seen lots of violence. a man was stabbed to death in february of this year. he was the fifth homicide in san jose. >> it's obviously trunlioubling the most recognizable hotel in san jose that's hosted presidents and rock stars. >> i think for the hotel and for the community it's concerning for sure which is why we want to help in any way that we can. san jose police say they are checking area businesses for surveillance video including the fairmont hotel. so far no arrests have been made in san jose, matt keller abc 7 news. >> san francisco wants to get suffer on gun violence pushing for a new task force. >> supervisor introduced ledge

squliervegtsds airtsds you cohen took to the steps of city haul today today urging everybody to take a stand against gun violence. when a pullet rings out it is inzrimate. we are all at risk. were lost no gun violence halfway through 2014 there have already been twenty fatal shootings in the city. >> last night somebody broke into you knew on union city boulevard in union city and stole half a million dollars worth of the items. police are relying on witnesses to come forward. this is at least the fourth time

thieves have broke into a local start up company. we have video given to us where a woman was captured on surveillance stealing items from that business. ç>ñ in securing a new deal that extend the less for another ten years. that vote comes after a 14 month long negotiating process. the final step will be the approval by the oek land alameeta kol is yunl. meanwhile there's a new report out today indicating the raiders have begun talks with officials in san antonio about a possible move to the alamo dome. we will have more on that story at abc 7 news at 5:00. >> well, a surprising sight for beachgoers in san francisco. tack a look at that. they look like jellyfish. hundreds maybe even thousands. as abc 7 news reporter found out

the beachgoers are not jellyfish, right alicea. >> this is what the features look like. this is small shaped disks with fins but scientists tell us there's nothing to worry about. >> i woke up and it smelled kind of funny. there was a bunch of dead jellyfish out here. >> worried about the thousands of blue sea creatures scattered on the sand. >> i was worried if they still stung or not. >> they washed ashore yesterday. a viewer sent abc 7 news these pictures calling the site bizarre. rich moy with the california academy of sciences says it's not. >> it happened to a certain extent every year. >> these actually are not

>> new at 4:30 an nba star launches a nation wide man hunt on social media to find an accused killer. >> at 4:11 checking downtown traffic. this is a live look at the sky way. it has been bunched up heading out of san francisco going to the lower deck of the bay bridge for hours now. there was a truck that got stuck trying to make a turn and that created a huge bottleneck and tie up so you can see that traffic is bumper-to-bumper. the other site going to peninsula, a little bit there you go. it at us. so it's kfc night. we have breaking news from southern california now. this is on the campus of ucla. it is a gusher here as you can see the streets bordering the campus are flooding. there's a white car we're going to zoom in on some of these vehicles here. traffic is backed up. essentially what appears to be a water main has bursted creating a guiser that's probably a few hundred yards after to the right. we will let the camera ease back here. whoever owns that white car. that poor guy is submerged basically because it's like a river of mud. the camera is panning toward the source of all of this water. as you can see it's up to the wheel wells and now we're getting close to the emergency crews. a moment ago we had a shot we're getting these pictures from all sister station kabc. you could see sheryl what is essentially a guiser shooting up. it looks like a water main breaking. take a look at the video from this.

there it is. >> bursting right through the concrete. this is amazing. we see students stuck trying to get through campus walking through mud and water up to their knees in some cases. >> sunset boulevard has been closed in both directions from marimont police to westwood plaza. we will keep on top of the story. it doesn't appear anybody is physically threatened in any way but just a major inconvenience for people trying to move around. we will keep you updated. >> back here in antiyokc. police say the trouble started around 4:45 this morning when they tried to pull man over as he drove. he refused to stop and let officers on a schas thchase tha several miles before his car broke down and he took off on foot. the car turned out to be stolen. >> talk about water conservation right now. this summer san francisco is meeting its voluntary water

conservation target even if that's only half of what they asked for. one supervisor wants to hold hearings on future plans to reduce the city's water usage. >> our reporter joins us from city hall with the supervisor's proposal. lee ann. >> sheryl today supervisor wiener told the rest of the board let's have a hearing to discuss the efforts here that we're doing in city to conserve water. next it will be discussed within a specific committee with a participation of a number of agencies, including the pic, park and the 3wi8ding department. >> water conservation will be on the agenda when the board of supervisors reconvenieed in department. for example, the public utilities commission has one recycling facility and will have another in four years. >> we're behind where we should be in terms of water reused.

water recycling. there's no reason for us to use anything but recycled water. for example to water landscaping. the plan is to eventually have certain areas like golden state park use only recycled water. it currently uses well water. meanwhile there has been concern that all the new construction of apartments in the city will increase the demand for water looking back at the past ten years, the puc projects even with the bay areas population growing, that won't happen. >> so it's grown by about 4% but conversely, water use has deceased over that period of time to 17% less consumption. >> that's true to the increase in conservation efforts, low flow fixtures and changes to the building code. >> even with the high density developments, our projections show 20 to 25 years out we

project demand to stay relatively flat. >> still supervisor wiener is proposing that individual building have water meter so people know how much water they are using. >> it's often infeasible to change the system but for new buildings they should have individual meters. >> that would require a building code amendment. >> in san francisco, lee an an, abc 7 news. >> back now to our breaking news story out of southern california near the ucla campus. look at the river of water and mud on the campus there because a water main break caused tremendous flooding. vehicles are standing there watching this trying to move. larry saw some students going to higher ground there. >> they've actually gone up some steps to try to get away from what is a river of water and mud at this point. there's no end in site off to the right we just saw a shot of the water still bursting up like 10, 15 feet in the air. >> it just destroyed the street

lightning strikes in the general vicinity of the red flag warning. the concern is lightning strikes in that dry area that could produce fires. >> looking in this direction 65 degrees right now in san francisco. 73 in oakland. 82 san jose. 63 half moon bay. check out this view of the clouds moving toward the coast from our east bay hills camera. check out also the inland heat right now. 87 degrees in santa rosa. one more live view from our tower camera giving a view of a couple of things of fog. we will see high clouds under filed conditi mild conditions overnight. it will be slightly cooler by the weekend. satellite image shows this remnants law. it was tropical storm and now it's pushing its moisture and

in helping him to live this dream we were saving ourselves. >> the filmmaker has launched an online indy go-go campaign to release the film. it will be released in september theaters. >> baseball umpires are released to getting booed. today nothing but smiles. >> this morning the umpire crew visited young patients at ucsf children's hospital in san francisco. the umpires went room to room building the kids a build a bare animal and an outfit. the umps say they do to make kids feel better during a difficult time. >> they got needles poking them. things that come with being in the hospital. hopefully we're able to take their thought as way and get them back to a little bit of normalcy of being a child. >> as you see here, stomper the a's mascot joined the umps. they've made 94 visits during that span. >> great score for the kids.

and the breaking news is the wild scene happening by the ucla campus. the steps you just saw are in front of the famed basketball arena. the polly pavilion. it is essentially under water outside of that area of campus right now. a water main break has caused massive flooding, stranded cars and people in underground parking structures are basically on hold. they can't go anywhere. sunset boulevard also remains closed. you see the track is also covered in water at this point. this is because of a break that started around 3:20 this afternoon. the water keeps gushing and gushing. even pieces of asphalt are now flying into the air because this thing is probably 20 or 30 feet high. we've seen cars surrounded by muddy water up to the wheel wells. students in ankle water right

there. in other parts of the campus it's knee deep. they are stuck, can't go anywhere. whoever owns this bicycle is not going anywhere for a while. we got reports of two people trapped inside their vehicles. there's a big faucet that needs to be turned off. fire crews have helped several motorists at this point. right now they are telling us no word on what exactly caused this water main break. we will keep you posted. >> it happened at about 3:24 this afternoon. fire fighters really busy in the bay area. returning to our breaking news. a grass fire in the east san jose foothills is finally out that broke out from a car that was burning on sierra road. our reporter is there and joins us with the latest. david. >> reporter: well we've got new information for you. standing atting at the summit. the fire was burning just beyond this point in a ravine. you can see how dry the hills are around here.

they are tender brown. that's why so many fire agencies responded. now, sky 7 hd was overhead at the height of the fire when cal fire san jose fire, and department of corrections inmate fire fighters were here. the major suppression came from fire redardant and dropped from the helicopter. a chp officer on the scene reported the fire probably started when a small passenger vehicle caught fire on sierra road. >> there was a vehicle that lost control and went off the side of the road approximately 20, feet feet off the embankment. ended up catching the brush on fire and that's what spreaded the fire driven by the wind. >> there's been 100 or so acres of open space up here. sorry. 1,500 acres of open space. there are hiking trails. the area is open to the public. it is north of alarock county

palestinians have been killed. on the israeli side more than 50 deaths. for now there seems to be no death in site. yesterday israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu warned that ayes ray israel would keep up a prolonged military campaign to destroy the tunnels along the gaza/israel border. secretary john kerry has taken heat for failing to produce a cease-fire. today he defended himself against theici criticism sayinge deal discussed had too few discussions against hamas and for the israelis. >> what we put on the table allowed them to -- >> secretary kerry said today he wouldn't be pushing for a cease-fire unless the israeli

prime minister asked him to which asked him believe the israelis are committed to ending the violence. >> the body of a teen stow away was found from a compartment above the rear landing gear of a u.s. cargo plane. the pentagon spokes person says the stow away may have been of african origin. the plane stopped in several african countries before arriving in germany sunday. it was found during a routine post flight inspection. >> authorities in sacramento say a suspect in is custody in the killing of the aunt of former golden state warrior matt barnes. police arrested michael williams today. he is the estranged husband of the 48-year-old aunt. the arrest came after barnes pleaded with his thousands of twitter and instagram followers to police keep on on eye out for

in paris the museum is home to some of the greatest works of art. it's also hole to major rat infestation. the hot weather this paris has brought a lot of rats. they are so bold. you can see them there romping on the grass in day time. of course that scares a lot of the tourists. to make it worse museum employees say animal lovers are helping the rats giving them water and removing the traps . a massachusetts whale watching company is trying to make good with passengers who were struck overnight in boston harbor. the boat returned this morning

after being stranded for 15 hours when its cable got strangled up in the proposal. the passengers and crew were forced to wait it out overnight as dive teams worked to get them free. the passengers while tired, at least one enjoyed the experience. >> we got divers to come. we got a tug boat. they couldn't get it cut. we had to stay overnight. this morning we got the better divers with bigger cools and they sawed the rope off so we're back here now. >> i love this kid. we had a sleep over. it all worked out great for him. >> the passengers already refunded and receive a $100 voucher toward a future cruise as well as $500 in cash. >> he got a sleep over out of that. he had a great time. >> that was so cool kids often give the best sound bites.

video out today is really scary stuff showing the dangers of walking on railroad tracks released of a train approaching two women who trespassed. the train is coming right over the top of these women on an 80 foot tall tressel. one woman lied down on the tracks and the train went on top of her. the other woman considered jumping off. neither one was hurt. imagine being in that situation. now these two women might face trespass very dangerous. >> train is always going to win. >> well, a new health warning to

anybody who likes to sun tan. this time though it is coming straight from the top. at the u.s. surgeon general, issued a statement declaring skin cancer a major public health problem. he says too much exposure to ip door and outdoor ultraviolet like is a major problem. >> there's a very flawed perception about tanned skin. how you're so tan. look how relaxed you look. no, the answer is how damaged you look. that's the reality. that's what goes on in the skin. >> the surgeon also is also urging people of all skin colors to use sun screen and hats. he's advocating for cities to provide shade. recently said it will now require tanning beds to put warnings. >> turns out morning sickness

now to a heartwarming story out of the east bay. young bare area man with some special challenges but extra special courage. >> reporter: 12-year-old jack zench knows he will finish last in every single race but that doesn't keep him from swimming on one of the most competitive team. >> i don't really care about the other stuff like the gold, bronze, silver all of that stuff because i'm not as fast as the other kids so i try and focus on positive time. >> he recently broke his time in the back stroke. he's been competing against himself since he was born with a rare form of dwarfism. his spine is so soft he needs rods placed in his spine every six months he has surgery. >> i have flexibility.
