thanks for joining us. we begin this morning with the worsening ebola crisis in africa. more than 700 people have died and the u.s. now warning against travel to three countries, liberia, guinea and sierra leone. >> and now two american missionaries battling the disease are flown home for treatment. abc's preeti arla has been following developments overnight. >> reporter: the death toll from the largest ebola outbreak in history continues to rise. two americans infected with the virus will be brought back to the u.s. one of them to emory university in atlanta for treatment in a special isolation unit. >> the ebola virus in terms of mortality rate right now is at about 64%, and so that's -- that's good news for us. we feel like that's -- mom has a chance. >> reporter: the efforts to control the spread of the virus are ramping up. u.s. immigration officers and pilots are looking for passengers showing signs of illness. the centers for disease control issued its highest alert for

travel to the affected country saying nonessential travel should be avoided. >> unfortunately, these countries don't have the infrastructure to handle the response and, moreover, they don't have any experience with these kind of outbreaks in the past. >> reporter: the cdc is sending 50 more specialists to africa. some of these experts will work at airports to screen passengers before they board international flights and prevent the virus from spreading to other countries including the u.s. the world health organization plans to spend $100 million to help keep the outbreak under control. >> i would not be surprised if we see isolated cases arrive here because you can be -- have no symptoms for three weeks after you've been infected, but those cases would not spread it around the country. we have good hospitals and good infection control. >> reporter: the cdc says it could take up to six months to get this outbreak under control. one official calling the fight a marathon, not a sprint. reena and devin. >> okay, preeti arla live in washington, thank you.

and breaking news from the middle east, heavy firefights reported this morning in gaza hours after israel and hamas had agreed to hold their fire. after more than three weeks in the fighting, a three-day cease-fire took effect overnight, but it didn't last long. the deal allowed israel to continue destroying tunnels along its border and palestinians to get much-needed humanitarian aid. we'll have to see how this morning's new violence will impact talks that were expected to begin in cairo as early as today. the faa issued a new flight restriction overnight banning u.s. airlines from flying at or below 30,000 feet over iraq because of dangerous conditions there. the order issued follows the downing two weeks ago of malaysian airlines flight 17 by a missile as it flew over rebel-held territory in eastern ukraine. many european airlines made a similar move earlier this week. newly released audio reveals former president bill clinton talking about a chance he had to kill osama bin laden in the 1990s.

the old recording of clinton was aired by sky news australia. that's where he spoke on september 10th, 2001, just hours before the 9/11 attacks. >> osama bin laden, he's a very smart guy. i spent a lot of time thinking about him, and i nearly got him once. i nearly got him, and i could have gotten -- i could have killed him, but i would have had to destroy a little town called kandahar in afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children, and then i would have been no better than him, and so i didn't do it. >> the commission, which investigated the 9/11 attacks, had previously noted four missed opportunities to strike bin laden during clinton's term. there's been no reaction yet from the former president himself. and dramatic new pictures just in of deadly gas explosions in taiwan. take a look. at least five powerful blasts sent cars and chunks of concrete flying. dozens of people were killed including four firefighters who were investigating a possible gas leak.

it's feared the death toll will rise after a road collapsed and people were trapped underneath. the source of the gas is so far not clear. a major embarrassment for the cia. the director is apologizing to members of congress after an internal report found cia employees spied on senators' e-mails. director john brennan had previously insisted that his employees did nothing wrong, but a report by the cia's own inspector general proved otherwise. the once powerful republican house majority leader eric cantor says he'll step down from congress now much earlier than expected. cantor tells a virginia newspaper that he'll leave office on august 18th. he says that will allow a special election to take place in november. cantor just resigned as majority leader yesterday after that stunning defeat by a tea party challenger in the june primary. the ceo of a chicago tech firm is fighting for his life after he was shot in his office allegedly by an executive he recently demoted.

police say anthony defrances fatally shot himself after wounding his boss and longtime friend steven lavoie. it happened during a one-on-one meeting less than a week after defrances found out he was being demoted as part of the company's downsizing. on the west coast, wildfires springing up like weeds. the focus in southern oregon now isn't fighting the blaze near the california border, it's getting everyone out right away. the oregon gulch fire now has grown to 3,000 acres, and a resident says it's "moving pretty fast." dozens of fires were started this week by lightning, and officials expect more may be started today. on the other side of the california/oregon border, a new fire near the town of day is now 4500 acres. there's a mandatory evacuation orders, and some 200 structures there are threatened. this and other california fires were also started by lightning. we now have the second named storm of the season, tropical storm bertha formed overnight in the caribbean. it has maximum sustained winds

of about 45 miles an hour and is moving northwest at 20 miles an hour. a tropical storm watch has been issued for puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands. even with tropical storm bertha far to the southeast coast, we'll get plenty of rain today. storms are also forecast for the great lakes region, some of the gulf coast and much of the southwest. portland, oregon, will get close to 90 today. phoenix sizzling with a near high of 107. just everywhere else will be in the 80s. well, a sudanese woman who refused to recant her christian faith in the face of a death sentence has arrived in the u.s. merian ibrahim was welcomed in manchester, new hampshire, by cheering supporters waving u.s. flags. her husband, who has u.s. citizenship, had previously lived in new hampshire and has family already there. ibrahim who was able to leave sudan after its high court overturned the death sentence. well, president obama was feeling the love at the white house last night as he hosted a celebration honoring special olympics. the event was packed with a-list celebrities like katy

wall street's looking at this morning's july jobs report for some good news. the dow yesterday plunged more than 300 points. that erased all the gains so far this year. today's report is expected to keep the unemployment rate at 6.1%. target's new ceo has his work cut out for him. the retailer is still suffering the effects of the massive data breach late last year. ryan cornell comes from pepsico, the first time that target has hired an outsider but analysts warn that he doesn't have much experience in e-commerce and that's an area where target needs help. well, kellogg's needs help too. it's reporting another drop in

control pills. >> a leading cancer journal reports women aged 20 to 49 on the pill appeared to have a 50% higher risk for breast cancer. women taking moderate to high doses of oral contraceptives seem to face the biggest cancer risk after hundreds of women were studied. it's the latest study linking tumors to the pill. well, here's a caught on camera for you. a robber at a convenience store near houston stopped in his tracks thanks to a brave group of clerks and customers. they pounced on the man after he was spotted stealing cell phones from the display case. take a look. one worker holding him in a choke hold while everyone else jumped in including a 67-year-old clerk. they eventually released the robber after his accomplice threatened them, but they left empty-handed. and this is what happened to a speeding suv in towson, maryland. the driver hit a car in the parking lot, jumped the curb before crashing into an office building. the car there lodged in the wall. three people were hurt. in addition to the gaping

seven-foot hole, the suv also took out an air-conditioning unit, lighting and part of the ceiling. a fun evening on a water slide ended abruptly in north florida. dozens of people were enjoying the 110-foot slide when it collapsed. about a dozen people fell into the water. eyewitnesses said the slide may have been overcrowded. the injuries were all minor. for the second year in a row tons of dead anchovies are clogging the harbor in santa cruz, california. they swam into shallow water en masse to avoid being eaten by whales but the sheer number quickly depleted the oxygen supply, so the anchovies are dying and floating to the surface creating an overwhelming stench. well, california's severe drought may be responsible for a los angeles area neighborhood's terror. residents reporting packs of coyotes roaming through their streets even chasing them. sightings of a few coyotes in this burbank neighborhood aren't unusual but not in packs this big or this aggressive.

you see there in the video. authorities say the coyotes may be having trouble finding food and water. and nfl star ray rice has apologized publicly to his wife for the first time about that violent incident at a new jersey hotel. you see him here on surveillance camera dragging her out of an elevator in atlantic city last february. he was punished by the nfl, but some people said the two-game suspension was not harsh enough. >> i was totally taken aback when i heard about the penalty and how weak it was. >> i made a huge mistake, and i want to own it. i want to say it in front of my teammates to tell you i made a huge mistake. you know, these two games are going to hurt. >> rice was arrested after the incident, but he's now in a diversion program which could lead to those charges being dropped. and there are still 34 days until the first nfl kickoff. >> can't believe it. so for now we have baseball highlights. for that here's espn's kenny mayne. >> hello people who watch television in the middle of the night. kenny mayne here, "sportscenter" set.

last half hour. they have turned on the escalator and opened the gates to the station. i am not saying the power is on but they are preparing to have trains running in the 4:00 hour. they leave the yards and head to the station with first train for passengers rolling out at 5:00. no passengers here but overnight muni tweeted there is a power outage. they will update that but as of yet they have not updated this information and there is no indication when it could be fixed. inbound trains are blocked. muni reports they will have shuttle buses between castro and embarcadero to ease the crush if it is not fixed in time. we will watch that closely. more breaking news from antioch. a
