good morning, america. breaking right now -- a jet plane heading to america, ebola patient on board at this hour. the two missionaries infected with the deadly virus will travel one at a time inside a special airtight isolation pod. now new travel warnings issued as fears of the killer virus grows. it's the first time it will be on american soil. breaking overnight, tropical storm bertha gathering strength in the atlantic. powerful winds and heavy rain churning towards the east coast and florida. ginger is tracking its path. newly unearthed audio of former president clinton the day before the september 11th attacks. >> and i could have gotten -- i could have killed him. >> the chilling tape reveals just how close he came to taking out osama bin laden and why he did not pull the trigger. ♪ i don't wanna live in a world without you ♪ and we don't want to live in a world without you, enrique.

be treated. good morning, rich. >> good morning, george. this is emory university hospital. and this is where that first patient with ebola from africa is going to be flown. many in atlanta and across the country are asking why. this morning, two american missionaries, nancy writebol and dr. kent brantly, fighting for their lives are being flown from africa back to the united states. abc news has learned they'll be flown one at a time on a special jet with an isolation pod like this. an airtight tent and at least one will be heading to atlanta, to emory university hospital. >> it's very difficult right now for the doctor. he's in what we would say stable right now but series condition and nancy is a little better. >> reporter: according to the cdc it's the first time an ebola patient will be treated in the united states. emory, located only a few minutes from the cdc, contains an isolation unit, one of four in the united states which can treat patients who are exposed to certain infectious diseases.

the hospital saying overnight its staff are highly trained to treat and care for this type of patient. >> we know how to stop ebola. it takes meticulous work. you have to find the cases, respond to them and prevent them. >> reporter: abc news learned that, on thursday, dr. brantly insisted on making sure that the only dose of an experimental serum was given to writebol instead of him. brantly's wife says "i remain hopeful and believing that kent will be healed from this dreadful disease." >> rich, the patients are heading there. i imagine they are on edge at that hospital. >> reporter: well, i imagine some are, george. but when i worked at the cdc up the street, sometimes our investigators would be exposed to something dangerous in the field. this is where we would take -- this is where we would send those people. the last time back during the big sars outbreak one of our investigators got sick in hong kong. he went here. they know what they're doing. >> that's good news. okay, rich, thanks very much. and george, we want to turn now to the weather and that

tropical storm brewing, bertha is packing strong winds and heavy rains as it barrels towards puerto rico and florida right now and ginger is tracking it all. ginger, what's the latest? >> it's more than 700 miles from puerto rico but this thing is cooking at 20 miles per hour. and it will get to puerto rico which has a tropical storm warning by tomorrow afternoon. you could see more than 6 inches of rain with this. you could see winds up to 50 miles per hour. it skirts by the dominican republic and then it curves away from the mainland. we should not see an impact in mainland u.s. there is another big story this morning. look at these pictures out of houston. just north of houston, we had more than 6 inches of rainfall, so some flash flooding issues early this morning. now, they're starting to recover but that rain will be headed east, and so, if you are in lake charles, louisiana, shreveport, louisiana, both in the bull's-eye today into tomorrow, 4 to 5 inches and a bit more going back into the southwest. it is not just here but in the east coast where we've got big rain for the weekend. i'll be detailing that coming up in our nation's weather.

>> soggy weekend coming up. we're going to turn now to the crisis on our border and congress to address it set to go home without a plan blocked in the senate before they headed on break and house republicans will hold an emergency meeting this morning to see if they can overcome division in their ranks and abc's jon karl is covering it all. this has become a study in dysfunction. >> reporter: george, it is a complete mess. the house republicans are meeting this morning to try to salvage the republican alternative to deal with the border crisis, but even if they can figure a way to pass something, it's going nowhere. the president has already said that he would veto the republican plan. the senate is leaving town without doing anything at all, so for all the talk about the urgent need to do something about that flow of unaccompanied children crossing the border, congress is set to go on a five-week august recess having done nothing at all about it. >> so border bill stalled. immigration reform seems dead for this year. did congress get anything done before heading out? >> reporter: well, they did get some things done, george. there was an emergency with the

highway trust fund about to expire. that funds construction and projects on the highway. they did pass that for a temporary period of time and they did pass a bill to deal with the mess at the veterans administration with veterans hospitals so not a complete loss in congress but pretty close. >> thanks. we'll have much more sunday on "this week" and amy for the other top stories. >> good morning, everyone. and we begin with breaking news from the middle east. a cease-fire declared overnight has collapsed. hamas and israel trading attacks, two israeli soldiers and dozens of palestinians reportedly killed. let's get right to abc's terry moran who is in gaza for us. terry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. so much for that cease-fire. within two hours of the declared start time of the cease-fire fighting broke out between israeli soldiers and palestinian fighters in the south. there are reports of israeli casualties and tens of palestinians killed, we are told, this is turning out to be one of the bloodiest mornings so far in this awful conflict. israel has responded, we've been

hearing, all morning with heavy, intense barrages down into that region, some shelling up here. palestinian rockets firing into southern israel. it looks like the agony of gaza will continue. amy. >> all right, terry moran in gaza with the latest. thank you. also breaking overnight, new rules in the sky aimed at protecting american travelers. the faa is now banning airlines from flying below 30,000 feet over iraq because of concerns that militants there could shoot down planes. some european airlines are banning flights altogether. and dramatic new pictures overnight of a series of gas explosions tearing through the major city in taiwan. sending cars and concrete flying. 25 people were killed including four firefighters who were investigating a leak. the aftermath, take a look at that this morning, it's looks like a war zone with fears that more people could be trapped. now to the economy. labor department reporting

209,000 jobs were created last month, slightly fewer than expected but still the sixth consecutive month of strong growth. the unemployment rate rose slightly, a sign that people are looking for work again because they're optimistic. and the director of the cia is apologizing after an investigation found they hacked into a committee investigating techniques. director john brennan first denied those claims and two democratic senators are now calling on brennan to resign. and a shocking sight in burbank, california. take a look. that is a pack of coyotes running through a neighborhood darting across lawns in the early morning hours hunting for food and water during the record drought. moments later you can see a newspaper delivery man showing up and sees the coyote, throws the paper really quickly and makes his escape. in maryland, some office workers are lucky no one was seriously injured after this suv came crashing through their building.

the driver went airborne while trying to park. that's quite a scene. finally, we are getting the real skinny about joe biden. the vice president of the united states apparently likes to go skinny-dipping. i know you wanted to know that this morning. this is all according to a new book which quotes secret service agents saying the vp can often be found in his pool in his birthday suit. some agents admitting they'd rather cover their eyes or cover someone else but apparently it's just the way he rolls. that's how biden rolls. >> whatever. >> maybe how biden rolls. i don't know. there's still some questions about that book. we'll get to that. we're going to turn now to an eerie recording hidden away for more than a decade of former president bill clinton just hours before the 9/11 attacks telling a group of australian businessmen why he did not order a strike against osama bin laden. here it is. >> well, i am just saying he's a very smart guy. i spent a lot of time thinking about him and i nearly got him

once. i nearly got him and i could have gotten -- i could have killed him but i would have had to destroy a little town called kandahar in afghanistan and kill 300 innocent women and children and then i would have been no better than him. and so i didn't do it. >> abc's chief investigative correspondent brian ross here right now. and it's just so chilling to hear that knowing just hours before the attack. >> exactly. of course, bin laden had no problem killing innocent civilians. >> but this does track what we had learned in earlier reports, specifically the report of the 9/11 commission about previous attempts to go after osama bin laden. >> right. they found three separate incidents between 1998 and 1999 where u.s. intelligence was deemed credible enough to warn planning for possible strikes to kill bin laden, but the intelligence was so sketch ey. it didn't offset the risk of killing innocent civilians. >> two separate sets of concerns

for all those and the former cia director george tenet has talked about this, as well, number one, they could never be sure osama bin laden was there. >> right. >> and, number two, as president clinton talked about the risk of killing innocent civilians. >> in kandahar they had a human intelligence source that put bin laden there but it turns out that he had left the room just before the supposed strike. >> he, osama bin laden. >> and, therefore, the strike would not have killed him and clinton's judgment in fact was vindicated. >> okay, brian ross, thanks very much. all right, we turn now to a football star publicly apologizing to his wife after a violent incident in a casino. his two-game suspension by the nfl widely criticized as not being strong enough, that has set off a firestorm, and abc's ryan smith is here with the story. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, lara. ravens star running back ray rice addressed the media for the first time since the nfl handed him a two-game suspension and while some sided with him for sounding contrite others wonder why the nfl didn't do more. >> i made a huge mistake. and i want to own it. >> reporter: this morning baltimore ravens football player

ray rice, facing the music, speaking out for the first time following the nfl's much criticized two-game suspension of the star for this shocking alleged attack on his then-girlfriend, now wife, janay. accused of punching and dragging her out of atlantic city elevator last february. >> i know that's not who i am as a man. i made the biggest mistake of my life. she can do no wrong. she's an angel. >> reporter: his comments thursday causing a frenzy on social media both for and against him one writing "he's human. we all make mistakes." another, "it's ridiculous that ray rice gets a two-game suspension for assaulting his wife. that should be jail time plus year suspension." the nfl wouldn't comment on his remarks, but now facing accusations of insensitivity to domestic violence. according to a study, 21 of 32 teams employed a player with a domestic or sexual violence charge on his record last year. this morning critics are calling out nfl commissioner roger goodell who has suspended

players for longer periods for duis, drug use, even illegal tattoos. >> this is such an opportunity for the nfl to speak directly to women and to families and they fumbled the ball. >> reporter: while ravens coaches and players are rallying around their teammate. >> he's a heck of a guy. >> reporter: rice's wife who reportedly pleaded with the commissioner to go lightly on her husband's punishment is standing silently in support. rice said one day his daughter will be able to google his name and want to know what happened. in the meantime, a group of u.s. senators wrote to the commissioner last night imploring him to issue a stiffer penalty to rice, saying the suspension represents a cavalier attitude towards women. lara. >> but, ryan, these suspensions usually are not changed. >> no, roger goodell handed down the suspension, ray rice agreed and the union didn't appeal so it's unlikely but you never know. they could bow to public pressure. but not likely. >> all right, ryan, thank you. we're going to turn now to a shocking shooting in chicago. an executive angry about being

demoted shot the ceo. shot him twice before turning the gun on himself. they had been co-workers and friends for years and abc's alex perez has the story. >> reporter: this morning what's being called a case of white-collar rage turned deadly sending panic through chicago's financial district thursday. police say it was just before 10:00 a.m. when tony defrance, an employee at aerostream, took the elevator to the 17th floor of this busy corporate building and shot his bought boss and friend of 14 years, company ceo steven lavoie. >> how do we incorporate -- >> reporter: seen here in this company video. the motive, defrances had just been demoted as chief technology officer. >> he was demoted i believe on friday based on what we have so far for a one-on-one with the ceo. during that one-on-one, he produced a firearm. >> reporter: police say 60-year-old defrances was carrying a gun inside a backpack

and went straight to lavoie's office and then -- >> there was apparently a struggle over the firearm. >> reporter: defrances shot lavoie in the stomach and head before killing himself. terrified employees hearing the gunfire scrambled for cover as authorities arrived. >> i was actually able to see them pulling out one of the people on a stretcher and put into the ambulance. >> reporter: lavoie, a father of three girls, now in critical condition. this morning employees returning to the office. shaken by the tragedy that unfolded on the 17th floor. for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news, chicago. all right, george, we want to turn now to a video that went viral hoping one homeowner catch a criminal that ripped him off. the outraged victim posting this home security camera on facebook to help track down a crook who swiped a fedex package right off of his front porch. abc's reena ninan explains. >> reporter: take a look at this video. watch as this man in broad daylight walks up to dan

dillon's indianapolis porch and is caught on not one, but five security cameras ripping into this package just delivered by fedex. and walking away with $300 earrings, but not before staring directly into this camera. dillon taking his frustration to facebook before going to police posting the videos prominently showing the burglar's face writing this message. "any of you indy southsiders know this guy? my wife wants her earrings back." >> a crime is a crime. whether you think it's right or wrong and depending on your circumstances but you just can't steal. >> reporter: almost 10,000 people shared his video in just 24 hours leading the cops directly to this suspect, brandon nelms, the next day. >> it was extremely high quality video which led to being able to identify the suspect. >> it's just amazing what the internet and social media can do and bringing all these people around.

starts to scoot off to the east and we will have a cloudy and rainy start for many along the coast but it won't necessarily be a full-on rainout the further north you go. we'll be watching but we all want to check on indianapolis who had their coolest july on record and now we go into the weekend, much more moderate, look at the temperatures. 82 as we head into our afternoon today. staying in the low 80s. detroit's right there. minneapolis should see a little more sunshine, therefore they get into the mid-80s saturday and sunday and chicago, a weekend ahead. you may see some clouds and maybe a rain shower but i'll leave you with that. i wanted to look at the west, too, heavy rain back into that monsoon flow. denver today, 81, spokane, real warm at 97.

good morning, america. come dance with me this morning right here in central park. >> a lot of people getting ready to do it. look at that crowd in central park. this morning, everyone getting ready for enrique iglesias, look at them. all excited on this friday morning here at "gma." we got a whole lot more ready to go, there they are on the party bus right now. they will be heading uptown. >> it's going to be a great show. and also on "gma," we've got the slenderman case back in court today. those two girls accused of stabbing their friend. we're going to learn if one of them is fit to stand trial. we've got an update on the victim's remarkable recovery, as well. also coming up, startling new findings about birth control pills, the new research revealing some types of pills may significantly increase the risk of breast cancer.

and then, we turn to extreme parenting. the incredible new video revealing the rather unusual ways that some parents are raising their kids and you won't believe it. it's a talker. >> yeah, there's some strange stuff there. but first, we're going to get the latest on that mysterious murder of a prominent law professor. police releasing the dramatic 911 call from a neighbor saying dan markel had been shot in his car revealing how long it took for help to arrive. matt gutman is tracking the case from miami. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning. also revealing those last agonizing moments of dan markel's life, the father of two trapped in his car bleeding, unable to talk, as his neighbor dialed 911 urging rescuers to move faster because markel was alive. emts like to say that seconds count but it took them nearly 20 minutes to get there. this morning the harrowing moments after a florida state law professor dan markel was gunned down in his garage. >> the driver's side window is all bashed in and he's got blood all over his head.

>> reporter: markel still breathing during this 911 tape released thursday. >> he's still moving around. so he's alive. >> reporter: 12 minutes later the caller still urging the 911 dispatcher to move faster. >> you need to send an ambulance in a hurry. >> reporter: the response? >> the officer is going to be there first. they're not going to come until we figure out what's going on. >> they better be if this guy's got a shot of living. >> reporter: he was shot as he drove his car into his garage on july 18th. sources telling abc news the killer fired a single bullet through the driver's window hitting markel just beneath the jaw line. the killer and the motive still unknown. but that caller noting he happened upon markel's car because he had been worried about an uptick in crime. >> i've heard about break-ins in the area and so i decided to walk over and take a look. >> reporter: now, we learned 19 minutes passed before that good samaritan's call and the paramedics' arrival. markel would die 14 hours later in the hospital.

and in that 911 call you can hear the confusion. >> i'm changing the location -- >> reporter: and then -- >> the police needs to go. >> reporter: the man who runs tallahassee's dispatch center tells abc news the operator didn't hear the caller mention the gunshot wound at first. >> on the onset of the call was entered into the computer system as a man down versus a gunshot wound. >> reporter: all of that creating a toxic brew of confusion and delay in the response as one ems unit was replaced by another. >> 19 minutes is a long time for making changes in this review to make sure that this atmosphere doesn't happen again. >> reporter: of course, the police investigation continues. now, law enforcement officials tell me that the tips keep coming in and they hope that this 911 call will generate even more tips. now, the main focus of the investigation remains that mysterious silver prius that was seen speeding by -- from the scene just moments after the shooting by another neighbor. george. >> okay, matt, thanks very much. dan abrams joins us now.

boy, that is one frustrating and sad phone call. >> yeah, this is not the way it's supposed to happen when you call 911. you're talking about a 19-minute response time. the average response in this county is under 9 minutes so this just shows you how much time was lost in getting there. now, i don't think that's going to impact the investigation. but there's no question that the possibility it could have saved his life. >> on the investigation, you are actually surprised he haven't identified someone yet. >> it was so targeted here of the -- it was so clear that someone wanted to kill him. it doesn't seem it was robbery. it seems that this was an execution and as a result, these cases tend to get solved. they tend to look at the inner circle of that person and are able to resolve the case pretty quickly. here it now seems the authorities are expanding way beyond the inner circle to say to themselves could it have been someone he might not have even known. could it have been someone associated with or commenting on his blog, et cetera, all these possibilities that make it such

a harder case. >> yeah, that is one thing you thought from the beginning. they were initially going for people that they thought knew him but now they have to get bigger. >> that's the way you do the investigation. start with the people closest to him. then you look out and that's why again as matt pointed out that prius becomes so important because it's the only hard clue that they have that might be able to link them back to the person. >> such an unusual getaway car. >> yeah, we talked about this before. the notion that, you know, someone is using a prius as a sort of execution vehicle, if that's what it was, again, we don't know. they aren't saying if they know for sure, but they're very, very interested if finding out who was driving that car. >> okay, dan abrams, thanks very much. we want to turn now to the latest on the case of the two 12-year-old wisconsin girls accused of stabbing a friend. supposedly to gain the approval of the fictional character slenderman. they're due back in court today where a judge will decide whether one of them is competent to stand trial. abc's linzie janis has the story.

>> reporter: this morning morgan geyser and anissa weier are due back in a wisconsin court and a judge deciding whether geyser is competent to stand trial accused of stabbing her friend back in may. the two 12-year-old girls first degree intentional homicide allegedly luring the girl into the woods for a game of hide-and-seek. stabbing her 19 times in hopes of meeting the fictional online character slenderman. weier allegedly telling investigators you needed to kill a person to show your dedication to slenderman. >> the court is going to evaluate two issues, was the girl lucid and sane? and, second, is she competent to assist in her defense today? >> reporter: neither girl has entered a plea but the young victim survived the attack. managing to attract the attention of a bicyclist who called for help. >> is there any bleeding going on? >> her clothing has got blood on it. >> reporter: she's been recovering at home since leaving the hospital in june. well wishers raising nearly $60,000 on an online fund-raiser for medical costs.

also sending prayers and boxes and boxes of hearts, purple, her favorite color. these new photos obtained exclusively by abc news show her holding a real purple heart. anonymously donated to her for bravery. >> to get a purple heart you have to be courageous. you have to be strong and you have to have had a wound. you were hurt and i -- this is very appropriate for this little girl. >> reporter: the young victim spent her summer volunteering at an animal shelter continuing to make her family proud. >> we're very excited and we're very proud of her. >> reporter: for "good morning america," linzie janis, abc news, new york. all right. thanks. to ginger with the weather. >> good morning, everybody, and look at this crowd right out there. we can see the man himself, enrique is here and he was just singing a song. what was the song he was just singing?

we want to turn now to a new health alert this morning about birth control pills. a new study suggesting some types of the pill are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. abc news senior medical contributor dr. jennifer ashton is joining us now. and, jen, i thought we knew this about the pill already. what is new about this? >> well, file this one under the category of not all birth control pills are alike. this study found that women who were taking medium or high dose versions of the pill had an associated 50% increase risk of breast cancer, however, those women on low dose versions of the pill had no associated increased risk. it's very important to remember in medicine we say an increased risk of an uncommon event is still an uncommon event, and the fact of the matter is luckily breast cancer itself is uncommon in younger women. >> so should women be getting off one type of pill and getting on another right now? >> well, there's some things women can do right now if they're on the pill to lower their associated risk of breast cancer. first of all, look at the package of the pill and look for a low number. it's either 10 or 20 micrograms of estrogen. second of all,

abc's paula faris has the story. >> reporter: call it the augustus gloof effect. >> i knew augustus would find the golden ticket. >> reporter: parents seemingly unconcerned and in some cases oblivious to obesity in their own children. in fact, a brand-new study shows 25% of parents underestimate the weight of their children while 27% of children and teens underestimate their own weight. and experts say that's a big problem. >> parents often feel that kids will outgrow their overweight and i always tell them, not likely to happen, so we really need to make some changes and doing it earlier is much better and much easier than waiting for something to happen later. >> reporter: the study cites some startling statistics. obesity in american children has doubled over the last 30 years and tripled in adolescents.

and as of 2010, nearly 1/3 of children and adolescents living in the u.s. were overweight or obese. so why do some parents seem to turn a blind eye in the battle of the bulge? >> sometimes it's cultural beliefs. sometimes it may be that by admitting that your child is overweight, you actually then have to confront, you know, the problem and then do something about it and some parents are reluctant to do so. >> reporter: for "good morning america," paula faris, abc news, new york. >> and joining us now is abc senior medical contributor, dr. jen ashton and what is your take on this study? >> it draws attention to the fact we have misperceptions of our own ideal body image and we, therefore, also have misperceptions as parents of our children, and we're still having difficulty reconcile iing a number that we see on a scale or a size with real internal measures of health, wellness and well-being and until we get that right, we're going to have that disconnect between obesity and poor health. >> let's zero in on teens.
