>> good morning, everyone, happy saturday. i'm katie marzullo. it's 6:00 a.m. on this saturday morning. let's start off with a quick check of the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning, katie. hopefully something for everyone today. fog at the coast and another warm day inland but not as hot. the doppler showing the fog along the shoreline. i show you this shot because it changes moment to moment. you see a better glimpse of the low fog and clouds. higher pressure pushing down on the marine layer just over 1,000 feet deep. it allows for the dense fog in parts of san francisco, half moon bay about 2-mile visibility. and we will be looking at temperatures once again today well into the 90s.

but looks like out of the triple-digit range. we will be talking about numbers from the low 90s to the upper 90s for concord and livermore and parts of our east bay valleys and around oakland, castro valley in the 70s today and 80s. san francisco mid-60s again. low 60s and fog at the coast and detailed outlook and then much cooler weather, about five or seven degrees cooler on tap for tomorrow inland. katie. >> lisa, thank you. at least 40 people are recovering after two incidents involving unit. they happened within minutes of each other. the first on geary near japantown, and the second one in bayfield. he have the details. ed >> a shattered window and a crumpled face of a bus. these people on the busy route described the chaos when the

tractor-trailer truck tried to avoid a dump truck. >> caught us off-guard. people started screaming. >> he didn't want to be identified, but some riders were thrown on the floor. eight people were treated and another twelve were rushed to local hospitals. minutes later another muni crash, this one involving a light rail vehicle at third and innes streets at bay view. >> we saw the really big break and then saw the glass shatter on the side. >> the muni was very crowded. and all we heard was a loud noise and impact. everyone shook. it was like it was a earthquake or something. >> police say a tractor-trailer truck was making a left turn. the sign clearly shows that's not allowed. and in the second major incident 20 people were hurt, 11 rushed to the hospital and 9 others treated or did a field exam and were released. >> i'm not hurting that bad, but it was a bad shock. i'm shook up. i can't even talk right now. >> one passenger said he decided to have a friend drive him in general hospital because the scene was so hectic.

>> they were going crazy. you know what i mean? everybody i'm hurt and hollering. i just sat down. >> police are still investigating both crashes. no citations have been issued. sergio quintana, abc7 news. another bus problem in the south bay. sarah sent us this photo of a bus that caught fire yesterday on the side of 101 in south san jose. s the fire broke out in the rear of the bus just before 3:00 p.m. you can see from sky 7hd the fire also searched some nearby grass. the vehicle was being driven to the bus yard so there weren't any passengers on board at the time and the driver was not hurt. a man suspected of stabbing his father has been taken into custody following a nearly seven-hour standoff in sonoma. "the press democrat" reports that 55-year-old hector vazquez was taken into custody before 1:00 this morning.

he's suspected of stabbing his father several times in the torso and barricading himself inside his home on mission drive. the victim was taken to the hospital with injuries not considered to be life-threatening. a potentially hazardous situation at a san mateo park. there's raw sewage in the creek and people are being asked to stay away from the office. turns out the city conducted tests but didn't detect it at first. we have details from the park. >> reporter: the first thing you probably notice walking through the park is the smell. >> smells like old water. >> i made the assumption it was a dead animal, a dead deer or something. >> we went a few hundred yards and the snell was so bad we turned around. >> reporter: the deputy director of the environmental services team said they first got the call about the unpleasant odor or wednesday. they tested the water but found nothing. they went back. >> the crews confirmed there was, in fact, sewage.

>> was the first test done wrong >> i don't think so. the testing we do is test for ammonia and dissolved oxygen, and it's often hard to detect raw sewage because sewage is primarily made up of water. >> he said there may not have been enough sewage in the creek to be detected initially, but some people i talked to are not convinced. >> it's become really terrible the last month or so. what if kids were playing or didn't wash their hands or drink it. >> crews had to post signs like this one all over the park, warning people to stay away from the water. the broken pipe is located three-quarter mile away from the the park north of highway 52 at hillsdale boulevard. the sewage drifted downstream. crews spent the afternoon torque contain the leak and to divert sewage back into the proper system. if all goes according to plans, the warning should be lifted early next week.

abc7 news. a judgment has been issued against the company responsible for dumping 3400 gallons of jet fuel near a water treatment plant at sfo in 2012. aircraft service international will pay $79,000 for violating environmental protection and fire code laws. two workers, who were not adequately trained to handle jet fuel, made an unauthorized dump that contaminated the water treatment plant system. richmond police chase the down a man with a $10 million reward on him yesterday and we caught it on video. several patrol cars surround the suspect on highway 80 in berkeley yesterday evening. the man got out and ran with his hands up, quickly surrendering. three women in the car were also arrested. richmond police handed him over to san francisco police. he is wanted for murder. an oakland woman has been sentence ford 120 days in jail for leaving her two and three-year-old daughters inside a hot car while gambling inside a livermore casino.

37-year-old woman pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to a child. the video shows her gambling for a half-hour before spotting an officer holding one of her children. her sentence includes three years probation and her children are in protective custody. an iraq veteran is angry that an oakland police officer involved in an incident is reinstated. the vet was hit in a head with a lead-filled beanbag. it caused permanent brain damage. while a group of people hurried to help him, the oakland police officer threw a flash bang at them. roach was fired over the incident but reinstated this week by an arbitrator. on youtube yesterday they criticized the officers actions that night and his history with the p. d, which includes three fatal shootings.

>> oakland pd has a -- they let officers know they can kill people and hurt millions at the expense of the people at oakland. >> roach's lawyer told the media partner the contra costa times that an independent investigator determined roach was unaware the man was on the ground. and the officer was cleared of all three shootings. >> happening today," bart will close two platforms at the daly city station for maintenance. it will last today and tomorrow and they will only use one track between the balboa park and coleman stations. they are rolling out a new maintenance plan for the aging infrastructure. crews will be replacing platform times and doing work on the elevators and escalators. passengers passing through should expect delays. >> tonight levi stadium will host the it's first-ever

sporting event. the earthquakes host spain in soccer. 70,000 fans are expected, and that means traffic could be a headache. but there will be 34 digital message boards and thousands of employees helping to direct it them to their designated lot. stadium officials spent weeks planning for today and they say they are ready for anything. >> i think we have everything covered. but until you actually have people in the building and coming down to the area, you don't know for certain, but one thing we do know is what we designed is highly flexible. >> you can check out an online tutorial showing the best way to get in and out of the stadium. we have a link to that on abc7news.com. of 6:09:00 a.m. no traffic to speak of, i would imagine, but weather-wise? >> yeah, a deck of low clouds. visibility certainly reduced if you are headed into the city from the east bay or the north bay. here's the golden gate bridge where you can see we've got plenty of fog out there. so the marine layer, and as it pushes closer to the ground it will evaporate quicker today.

>> welcome back. >> a celebration of music to honor a young bay area girl who was murdered. ♪ >> more than 300 young musicians performed at this year's jenne lynn summer youth concert in hayward last night. anchor cheryl jennings hosted the annual event. it honors the girl who was murdered in 1994. the jenne lynn foundation was honored a congressional award as well. jenne's parents created the program in their daughter's name to keep her spirit alive. a growing problem from california's drought. more encounters with thirsty wildlife. in southern california a man and his dog had to run from coyotes as they close in on them. abc news reporter rick juan has the story. >> reporter: one man and his dog running scared in suburban burbank, california. here's why. coyotes on the hunt.

>> as i was walking i saw four or five coyote as coming at me and i started pausing. after that i saw around ten more coming out. they were coming out like a horror movie. s. >> reporter: coyote sightings are not uncommon in southern california, but close encounters like this are on the rise. the theory, the severe drought sending wild animals into human habitat in search of food. >> they are displaying strange behavior. very strange behavior, predatory. we see this mountain lion in a santa monica office building, a bobcat who broke into a prison in washington state. and here in malibu the wild animals are being seen more often in the middle of day and they are more aggressive and can be destructive. the advice? don't leave kids or cats outside unattended. >> if you heard the screeching noise -- [howling] it was as if some animal being completely taken apart and eaten. >> even when he waved a shovel, they wouldn't leave. abc news, los angeles.

>> happening today, the hayward fire department will host a community meeting on how to reduce wildfire risk. officials say drought conditions and high temperature are making for a dangerous wildfire season. they are hosting a planning session that will help residents identify potential fire risks and discuss ways they can reduce fuel on their property. today's planning session is from ten to noon on stonebray elementary school in hayward. >> today in southern california, two boats loaded with 12,000 pounds of marijuana were seized by the coast guard this week. you are looking at photos and videos of the stash from the coast guard. it was about 180 miles off the coast of san diego. the coast guard said the four suspects on board tried to take off, but were quickly caught and arrested. >> this morning facebook is back up and running after a brief worldwide outage. the company isn't saying why some people are had trouble

accessing the strike. but it created problem for the los angeles police department. they put up a posting with this tweet. facebook is not a law enforcement issue. please don't call us about it being down, we don't know when facebook will be back up. it's a question you get every time you rent a car, would you like to purchase rental car insurance with that. one oakland woman said she refuse it had but was charged for it anyway. she called michael finney for help. >> lynn coles of oakland looked over her rental car bill. among the charges were $400 for rental car insurance. she recalls an agent going down a list of insurances she could buy. >> i have insurance. why do i need your extra insurance? >> lynn knew the rental car would be covered under her auto insurance company. she also had additional coverage from her credit card. jeff is a senior editor with

"consumer reports." >> your credit card provides additional protection for things your personal insurance may not cover. >> he said one thing many credit cards cover that your other insurance won't is loss of the use of the car. your own insurance will pay for any damages to the rental vehicle but your credit card may cover any charges from the loss of use while the rental vehicle is being repaired. each credit card is different so check with your issuer. lynn said her rental car agent was persistent. >> i said, well, i don't need it and she said, well, i still have to ask you anyway. so she went through everything and i kept seeing her check and check. she signed the agreement but acknowledges she didn't read it in its entirety. >> they can be long, but read that. look at the top part. this is a lot of stuff here. but this is, most of the meat of it is up here. >> he said you have to read the fine print. we contacted hertz, the parent

vollmer peak. 56 gilroy, 55 half moon bay. good morning, san francisco. the low cloud deck over the city this morning. 57 in novato and cool temperatures from napa, santa rosa. concord partly cloudy. clear in livermore and out by the delta we are looking at a slightly stronger breeze. it is still going to be quite warm there. but a few degrees cooler for the east bay valleys. emeryville with the low clouds and fog. so we look at the fog this morning along the coast and the bay. inland cooling more pronounced tomorrow. anywhere from about 5 could -- five to eight degrees cooler tomorrow. the ups and downs will continue as we plow on into august. here the flow around the high continues to bring showers and thunderstorms up through the southern sierra, southern california. it begins to retreat just a

afternoon. not quite as hot inland so the 100s out toward the central valley, stockton. they even have thunderstorms to deal with in the mountains. back home mid-and upper 90s. that's an improvement. 80s up toward santa rosa, and 70s in oakland. we will talk in detail about the highs today. the cooler day arrives tomorrow. katie. >> thank you, lisa. new this morning, president obama is speaking out about the latest u.s. jobs report. according to the bureau of labor and statistics, the economy added 209,000 jobs in july. it's a dip from june, but the sixth straight month the number has been above 200,000. this morning president obama says he is staying steps to ensure the momentum continues. >> that's what's at stake right s now. making sure the economy works for every working american. making sure the people who work hard can get ahead. that's why i've been pushing for common sense ideas like rebuilding the infrastructure

that creates millions of new jobs and helps our country compete. that's why i've been pushing to raise the minimum wage to make it easier for working folks to pay off their student loans. that's why i'm pushing for fair pay and paid leave. >> the economy added 1.5 million jobs this year. the strongest six months for hiring since 2006. house republicans scored a victory last night, approving a $605 million border bill before leaving on a five week recess. the bill is designed to deal with the immigration crisis at the border with mexico and child immigrants. house has approved a bill that would prevent the obama administration to giving work permits to undocumented immigrants with children who arrived before 2,007. that could clear the way for deportation for more than half a million immigrants. the bill was declared dead on arrival. they said the government is running out of money to deal with it.

turning to the crisis in the middle east. this morning israel is hitting dozens of sites in gaza as it continues a massive search for an officer who is feared was captured by israeli militants. they believe he was grabbed in an ambush about an hour after an internationally brokered cease-fire took effect yesterday. programs for babies said israel has a right to defend itself from attacks from hamas and the captured soldier must be released. >> i want to make sure that they are listening. if they are serious about trying to resolve this situation, that soldier needs to be unconsciousally released as soon as possible. >> hamas said they aren't aware of the soldier's capture. the three day cease-fire was intended to pave the way for a more substantial treaty. demonstrators in the north bay will hold a rally to protest the gaza. they say they are opposed to

what they consider the israeli invasion of gaza. today's rally is at 1:00 at courthouse square in santa rosa. for the first time in history a patient with the ebola virus will be treated on u.s. soil. here's what we know now. one of the two american missionaries infected will arrive from africa today on a plane with an airtight isolation pod. meanwhile the outbreak in liberia has forced soldiers to patrol the streets where panic is causeddy the disease. abc news reports. >> reporter: the worst breakout in history of ebola is said to be spreading faster than ever to contain it. doctors without borders calling the situation out of control. the director of the world health organization meeting with presidents of the impacted countries in west africa warning them if the situation continues to deteriorate, the consequences

can be catastrophic. >> unfortunately these countries don't have the infrastructure to handle the response. >> experts with the cdc now working with officials in the african countries to keep ebola from spreading and here in the u.s. doctors are on alert. >> we screen all people with high fevers. and now we are asking have you been to west africa, have you been in africa, have you been traveling anywhere near that region. >> this hospital in atlanta is now preparing to treat the first ebola patients ever in the u.s. american healthcare workers, doctor kent brantley and nancy writebol are heading to the u.s. to be treated. heading to emory university hospital who has a specially contained area for patients with diseases. >> we have the expertise to care for the patients and offer them the maximum opportunity for recovery from the infections. >> meanwhile another american who was treating ebola officials alongside the doctors is back

home in tennessee, quarantined in his home as a precaution. >> i'm feeling well now and have no symptoms of illness since my return. >> the director of the cdc said he is confident it will not spread here in the u.s. morrisey gonzales, abc news, new york. happening today, contra costa health services is throwing a community baby shower to help pregnant african-american women in need. organizers say the event will provide help and parenting information, and connect women with prenatal services. food, clothing and toys will also be available for those who attend. it will take place from 9:00 to 3:00 at grace bible fellowship of antioch on oakley road. >> a new state bill looks to provide parents with a basic of child rearing, diapers. if the bill fast-movinged, it would make california the first state in the country to create a diaper assistance program for families on welfare. the bill would provide $80 a

month for diaper costs for each family who qualifies for welfare with a child under the age of two. >> a heads-up for anyone shopping for health insurance through the "covered california" this weekend. the enrollment section. the healthcare exchange website will be down for scheduled maintenance. officials say the maintenance only affects the enrollment portal and consumers can still use the shop and compare tool it look at health plans. scheduled maintenance runs from tonight at 6:00 until 6:00 monday morning. san jose police are asking for help locating a man they call the armed midtown bucaneer. this man enters the store and pull out an assault rival, aims it at the clerk, demands cash and forces the clerk to lie on the ground. the midtown bucaneer was last seen wearing a black

gray shirt, black jacket and black shorts. police say if you recognize him, call police immediately. the husband of a woman killed in a bank robbery and shootout in stockton. he gets angry as he thinks about what happened. a former fbi agent talked to abc7 news about his new book, unibomber, detailing the hunt and capture of ted kaczynski. the fbi arrested kaczynski in 1996, end being the search for the bomber. kaczynski killed three people and hurt 23 others before jim freeman's team tracked him to a remote cabin in montana. >> i had fbi agents right up to the day before we we arrested him saying we cannot believe this hermit living in a 10x12 cabin, no electrical power, no running water, how could he be the unibomber? no means were transportation other than a bicycle. >> they were talking about the unibomber case and terrorism in america. that's tonight at 7:00.

morning. back in may it won a $5.1 million contract to do the work. it's 400 feet long and it can break ice up to 21 feet thick. it clears pathways for supply ships and helps with rescue missions. the boat launch is back open at the santa cruz harbor this morning. this, after volunteers, had to scoop up hundred of dead anchovies from the water. but more work has to be done. the hand-washing facilities will be closed through the weekend, and no paddleboarding will be allowed. and because employees are focused on cleaning up the water, they won't be able to run the shuttle from remote parking areas. >> well, let's take a look at lake tahoe. you can see it looks pretty nice out there, 46. we will get some cumulus clouds

>> a huge traffic bottleneck. >> jack hammers, cars inching along the popular corridor that is now coned off into one lane of traffic. barbara lives on castro street. >> castro used to be a much wider street. >> but now with the sidewalks widened, the street is narrower. the sidewalk project started in march and it meant not only tearing up the sidewalk, but the street. it continued for about four months. the public works department launched a vigorous outreach campaign to alert about the possible inconveniences. but the inevitable happened to merchants like this man, who owns a grocery store on castro street. >> what's the difference? >> 30% to 40% down. >> public works stopped construction and repaved the

street to accommodate the pride celebration the last week of june. >> they paved the street, and as soon as they paved it, literally three weeks later they are digging it up. >> the city is tearing up the street again to put in these cast iron waterpipes. richard, who lives on the street, and many others wonder why the work wasn't done at one time to lessen the impact on merchants and save taxpayer money. public works spokesperson rachel gordon. >> we had to see how we could do it in the best timeline that would being the least inconvenient for the people who live and work in that neighborhood. >> and that means doing the work in two phases. first widening the sidewalks before pride week and then suter project and the rest of the project from now until october. all that before the castro street fair, the rainy season and the holiday moratorium on construction, which starts thanksgiving. vic lee, abc7 news. >> 6:47, i would say on a bright and sunny saturday morning, but -- >> well, partly sunny. we will be looking at warm weather, but not quite as hot. maybe out of the triple digits.

injured or orphaned bobcats. the ongoing drought has pushed the animals closer to communities as they search for food. the volunteers with the wildlife education and rehabilitation center in morgan hill have been rescuing the sea lions and in doing so they dress up in a bobcat costume scented with urine and native americans as an anti-imprinting technique to minimize human contact with the animals. they came up with the idea so when the bobcats are back in the wild they don't associate food with humans and go up to the first person they year. -- that they see. they have rescued more than 40 bobcats over 20 years. the baby ones are so cute but they aren't allowed to get attached. >> very cute. we are looking at a nice afternoon if you like it on the cool side along the coast. it will be warm again inland. but turning temperatures back slowly. 98 in livermore, 79-degree mont. that's cooler. 84 in san jose. partly cloudy in the city. 87 in napa.
