breaking news out of california. severe flash flooding overnight devastating towns and mountains east of los angeles. >> key access roads cut off, it's from massive mudslides. some mudslides 12 to 15 feet high. rivers of debris and mud flowing downstream, the result of rain coming down fast and fierce. as much as 4 inches in less than an hour. the flooding has cut off access to two mountain towns in san bernardino county, stranding thousands of people. the streets are clogged. a hot tub covered in mud clogging the streets. >> heavy debris, mud, boulders. splitting the town in half. >> this morning, checking submerged cars for anyone trapped inside. this large van covered by a mudslide. fire fighters smashing the window to a black car that was washed away down a river and got stuck under a small bridge. >> it somehow swept off the

street, down into the stream behind my house was and bobbing and went down four or five houses. >> no one in the car, but at least one person has died after their vehicle swept away. all that rain putting a dent in california's historic drought. so much of the state still parched. >> and in northern california, six major wildfires burning, hundreds of residents with their homes threatened now under evacuation there. three of the fires were sparked by dry lightning. all told, including the smaller wildfires, more than 117,000 acres now burning in central and northern california. and this new video, how planes fly to drop the fire retardant. this is a giant c-130 equipped with a special fire fighting system that can drop 5,000 gallons in just five seconds. and the ebola virus, 826 people have died from the virus. >> the american doctor suffering from ebola is being treated at a

georgia hospital. that's where marci gonzalez is. she has the latest this morning from atlanta, good morning, marci. >> reporter: good morning. after spending much of the weekend here, dr. kent brantly's wife says his condition is improving. this morning, the first ebola patient ever in the u.s. is starting his second full day of treatment here at emory university hospital in atlanta. he is in an isolated room, specifically designed to keep it from spreading. his wife was able to visit him here over the weekend. >> in the process of designing this unit, allowed for a lot of face-to-face contact through a plate glass window. and a communication system so they will be as close as 1 to 2 inches from each other. >> reporter: amber brantly left grinning ear to ear. they are optimistic, especially after seeing him walk from the ambulance to the hospital after

arriving from liberia saturday. now the same specialized medical plane that brought him here is heading back to liberia to also bring his colleague, nancy writebol to this hospital. doctors are defending the decision to treat them here. >> this is new for the united states, but we think we have processes to maintain the health of the patients and the general public at large. >> reporter: the cdc is trying to stop the spread of the disease in west africa. already more than 800 people killed by this outbreak. >> we can stop it, we know how to control it. the single most important thing we can do to protect americans is to stop the disease at the source in africa. >> reporter: and writebol is expected to get here tomorrow afternoon. while there is no cure for ebola, doctors say this is the best place possible to treat the patient's symptoms.

>> live in atlanta, thank you. israel announced a seven-hour humanitarian cease-fire in growing international condemnation after a deadly strike on a school in gaza. ten people were killed, criticized by the u.s. as disgraceful. the u.n. said it was a moral outrage and criminal act. israeli troops are coming out of gaza after destroying most of the hamas tunnels. israel is also facing new allegations accused of spying on secretary of state john kerry during last year's failed middle east peace talks. they said that israel listened to the phone conversations to high-level negotiators, and used the information in their own negotiations. and looking for survivors in china after a major earthquake. hundreds were killed, many injured after the 6.1 quake.

one resident said her streets looked like a battle field after a bombardment. it was also struck in 2012. and another young person died from a drug overdose in maryland. the 17-year-old was from northern virginia and attended the mad decent block party on friday. a 20-year-old from north carolina died on friday night. 18 others were hospitalized. the fatal drugs are not identified, but there are reports of extensive reduce of molly at the concert. a new mexico woman is facing charges after she tried to storm the cockpit of an american airlines jet. they were forced to land in nashville. according to police, the woman trying to run towards the cockpit, stopped by a flight attendance, and punched him in the stomach and restrained by him and another passenger. happy birthday wishes to president obama. he turns 53 years old today. his birthday weekend included golf and a visit to the presidential retreat at camp david. mr. obama has no public events

toledo, ohio. half a million residents being told they can't use tap water. >> tests showed high levels ofs toens, likely from a large algae bloom on lake erie. >> it's been horrible. >> reporter: for a third-straight day, faucets remain off, even though new tests found that the tap water is safe in most areas, the mayor overnight decided to keep the water ban in place. >> i am not going to take any chances. my prayer is that by early morning hours, we'll see a -- a light at the end of this tunnel that will give me comfort with the decision. but that light isn't visible at this time. >> reporter: they should not prepare food, brush their teeth or wash dishes with it. it's ohio's fourth-largest city, bringing it to a virtual standstill. many businesses and restaurants

so many horses to die there recently. happened to ten horses over the first three weeks of the summer season. some are speculating that something is wrong with the turf track. no races will be held while it's made softer. some owners are pulling horses out of races scheduled for the turf. a new lead in the disappearance of an oregon woman who disappeared 11 days ago. it was jennifer houston's green suv on a ferry in new york state. it was a week after the 38-year-old mother of two went missing while running errands. she was last seen at a drugstore and a gas station. and a deadly plane crash in a residential neighborhood. the pilot and passenger were killed when it nose dived. landing in the front yard of a home. it came to rest on the lawn upside down. still not clear what caused the

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good monday morning, everyone. >> thanks for joining us. we will check on the weather forecast. mike is not here. leyla gulen is here. >> good morning, everyone. hope you had a wonderful weekend. we have heard about flash plods in southern california and we have an upper low in the south making its way north. live doppler 7 hd shows a lot of thunderstorm activity to the east of us but the upper-level low will come up to the bay area bringing showers. what you will see this morning is increase in cloud layer and as we look at the golden gate bridge it is dry with no thick fog but increasing clouds. slightly cooler but it will bring a slight chance of sprinkles with the seven-day forecast in a few minutes.

but, first, traffic with a lot of construction. we have certain areas long 80 lasting until 5 o'clock a.m. and as we look right now at the toll plaza you can see clear conditions make it away from emeryville to san francisco so no issues there. we have a big rig pulled to the shoulder and not sure if it is blocking a lane or waiting to get into the toll plaza. the cars are piling in behind it so it is nothing to peek of. i have the full bay area commute in a few minutes. >> it is 4:29. we have break news from the east bay a pier on the cartinez straight burned and firefighters say it was tough to get to the flames. this pier is off limits to the public as firefighters

the damage. flames could be seen for miles away as far as vallejo shooting high into the area. fighting the fire on this wooden structure was extremely difficult according to the firefighters burning under and between the larged withen posts. it made it almost impossible to put out the fire. the structure was a ferry terminal. it is burning on the other side of big piers and it has been a challenge to get to that. it is underwater and we do not have a true fire boat to put it out. >> how fire started is still not known. boats are located 100' from where we
