below what they have been in the last couple of weeks. rainfall is pushing west ward as you can see over toward the sacramento valley. to our immediate north, north of clear lake, a fire weather watch is in effect. will be in affect from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. to the north of that region, northern most part of california into southern oregon, there's concern that lightning strikes could tricker fires in those areas. no lightning strikes to be found right now. spencer, thank you. >> seven of the ten major fires burning across the state tonight were started by lightning. more than 160 acres have burned and more than 10,000 fire fighters are on the front lines some are from the bay area. our reporter joins us now near santa rosa with more on that. wayne. >> hi, sheryl. if you look over my shoulder you see that airplane here at the cal fire base. it is actually based in holister. they moved that plane up to

cover for other planes from this base that are fighting the fires up north. they expect to have very busy times especially with this weather that's moving north. >> for cal fire in the northern part of the state, this is the calm before the next storm. that's not a variation on a kreesha. it cliche. it's reality. >> we will put people on a higher letter. due to activity we'll called all personnel back and held them onduty. >> they are worried about lightning strikes similar to what we saw in morin county. >> huge explosion. it shook the house and raddled the windows. >> it is a danger due to a combination of 12 fires burning more than 130,000 acres in northern california and six of those fires began from lightning strikes more than 3,000 of them. the concern is that more severe weather is on the way. after suspicious strikes, cal fire might dispatch the captain

to survey an area. sometimes the fires will smolder for several days and others -- >> other times they will hit the trees. with the drought we've had. a lot of the trees -- there's a lot of dead trees. if lightning kocomes down and hs that it gives it the fuel it needs to get a fire started. >> it has already become a busy fire season which may become faster than ever as fast as the strike of lightning bolt. abc 7 news, wayne freedman. >> in san francisco, smoke from a hotel under renovation sent several construction workers to the hospital. abc 7 news reporter is live from mcallister street near the un plaza with the story. plea lee an. >> this fire started around noon. police closed several streets in the area around market and jones street. now the old hotel is being completely redone so construction workers were inside the building. now, from sky 7 hd, you can see

one of the workers who complained of smoke inhalation a total of eight were treated. seven were taken to local hospitals. at one point things got too dangerous for fire fighters so they decided to leave the building and start atatacking te fire from the outside since the building is empty. >> from that end, from the beginning of there, and then it came over and then it started working its way down. >> a lot of smoke come out. a lot of smoke come out. >> there's no life safety issues. there's not personal property inside. it's a building which is obviously very valuable however it's not worth risking any lives. >> fire fighters were also trying to cool down the facade of the building because -- this is something that i didn't know when the heat is too intense, the mortar in between the bricks

dies out and the building could become unstable. some near by businesses were evacuated. now right now, the cause has not been determined but we know this, there were welders inside that building. i'm live from the tender loin district of san francisco, leeann molendez. >> fire investigators are looking into exactly what caused a pier to go up in flames at the martinez marina. they say it was definitely human caused since there was no electrical equipment or lightning strike. it broke out just before 11:00 last night on the pier's west end. the fire damaged the end of the peer. some surrounding pillars and a small structure once used as the ferry famasters building. >> work has led to the arrest of a man who officers say arrested a man in freemont. they say he saw afamily in

passing and ran to their house. that's when they say he broke early yesterday, tied up one woman, raped her mother. police say he ran out when a man came home taking several val automobil ubls with him. police say he was conprehas con may have committed similar crimes. >> investigators say he lured the children to a secluded area and the kids told their parents what happened. police are asking anybody with mf information to please come forward. >> a diseased cal football player's family plans to file a wrongful death suit. he died duri an off-season training season last february. he suffered from excessive thickening of the heart. his lawyers argue he

demonstrated symptoms during that run that went unnoticed by the training staff. the university said it can not comment since it has not seen the impending lawsuit. >> the u.s. coast guard has suspended the search for a boast captain that ran aground earlier this morning. the coast guard called off the air and sea search around noon. they say he called other boat around 3:30 in the morning saying his fishing vessel got stuck on rocks in san francisco bay. he said he may try to swim the 25 yards to shore. the fire team did search the 40 foot boats deck area but they could not go into the submerged captain. >> it was not response for them to get on scene and get 100% space accountability. we don't if he made it off the vessel to shore or not. >> crews will now focus on removing any hazardous materials and bringing the boat onto the shore. the vessel could have up to 400

gallons of fuel onboard. >> well, a warning now. stay away from humpback whales coming from wild life officials to boaters. officials say an influx of small fish are luring those whales dangerously close to shore. noaa is reminding boaters include those that kayak and paddle to stay away from the federally protected species. anybody approaching one could face thousands of dollars in fine. >> a bummer for the giants. they'll have to make their play off quest without pitcher matt kain. the procedure will end his season. the 29-year-old right-hander has struggled this year winning only two of his 15 starts. the team expects him to be ready for the start of next season. he is in the fifth year of an eight year $140 million contract. >> just ahead from baseball to

at a complete stand still for the sfraean francisco earthquak game. we have team coverage on the count down to the 49ers debut at levy stadium. sports reporter mike shoeman was with the team today for their first practice there. abc 7 reporter slows us the practice aftermath of the first big event there. david. >> well, sheryl they are doing everything they can to address this traffic snarl problem. the 9ers have produced videos the 9ers have produced videos and been doing ax/m encouraging the use of public transit. the public isn't coming but it's leaving after a game even when the crowd is only half the size of a 49er's game. >> word got out fast especially over social media that traffic and parking were bad for the saturday soccer game. so fans going to today's scrimmage plan for a repeat. >> i got here at 9:00 in the morning. so yeah. >> how long is it going to take to get out of here? >> well since i'm really close,

probably two hours. >> a touch of resignation there perhaps. this crowd members 10,000. about a fourth of the crowd that put levys through a stress test saturday. soccer fans arrived in staggering time but when more than 48,000 of them tried to leave afterwards, people said it was a nightmare. this man's wife couldn't get to the light rail station. >> so ended up walking three miles to a friend's house and got a ride home from there. it was just -- the infrastructure is not quite there yet. >> vta acknowledges there are problems. a train lost power and some passengers had lost waits. >> people were waiting around an hour. that's a long time to wait. long waits like can be difficult. our goal is to move people a little faster than in a. >> three light rail trains each with the capacity of 450 will be waiting to pick up post game crowds in time of the first 49ers game august 14th. >> necessity got to fthey got t

coverage. >> 10,000 got to watch the practice for the first time at levy stadium. traffic was backed up. everybody was giddy to watch the 49ers. everybody had a good time including my former teammate dwight clark. >> what's your impression? >> spectacular. it's like my fifth trip here. i think i've been on just about every level. it's just beautiful. i'm sure there are a lot of kinks to work out. >> once get here, it's spectacular. it's in the vain of the 49ers over the years have done everything first class. >> candle stick, levy stadium. which one do you like better. >> come on. it's like apples and oranges. >> candle stick has all the history levy will get all the history it's a beautiful stadium. >> you don't mind the drive down to santa clara. >> i live in freemont. if they give me a bike path i'm taking my bike. >> better than stick? >> no. >> no? >> why not? >> the city. nothing is better than the city.

>> we have some business news for you. link t link, the labor department is saying 359 people did not get paid for all the hours they worked. they said faulty record keeping is to blame and that problem is being fixed. >> the warning tonight from police about internet fraud by somebody using the website zillo. police say several people have fallen victim to sending money to a fictitious homeowner. the apparent homeowner told them to send the money using a money gram service. san francisco police are asking anybody who might have become a victim to this fraud to please give them a call. >> if you thought nectarines or even the organic kind check the label. the company outside of fresno is

expanding a volunteer recall because they may be contaminated. the initial recall covered specific lots of fruit packed from june 1st to july twelfth. now the company is expanding the recall as a precautionary step by five days to fruit packages through july 17th. so be sure to check your refrigerate yar or fruit basket at home. >> the job market is loosening up for some money. >> that good news. >> mid managers, executives and professionals are finding a it a bit easier to land a new job these days. strong employment gains are spreading to middle to higher wage industries as employers are becoming more confident in the economic recovery. businesses service, construction, manufacturing, have outpaid lower waged sectors. this is a huge shift from last year where job growth was concentrated in lower paying

industries like restaurants and home health care. >> it may be easier to get that iphone app for your android device. the system now accounts for 85% share of global smart phone shipments. the growth in android phones came at the expense of blackberry, apple, and microsoft's window phone accounting for 249 million shipped in the quarter. with numbers like that, every app will soon be made available for android as well as the apple. >> a bill working its way to the california legislature would add more baby changing tables to men's rooms. now, there is no law requiring businesses to install changing tables. this measure doesn't demand it either. it simly says that if a table is being installed or upgraded in a woman's rest room, the facility must add one to the men's room

san jose, 78. gillroy 63 at half moon bay. current temperatureadings fair . livermoore 79. beautiful view from our east bay hills camera looking at the western sky. it will be cloudy and mild tonight. a few sprinkles are possible overnight and into the morning hours mainly in the northern post part of our viewing area. then after some early morning chance of showers we'll have mainly sunny skies. satellite radar composite shows the area of low pressure center over naf aevada. the wrap around moisture is moving into the central sierra and northern sierra and toward the bay area. 7:00 this morning notice a continuing trail of moisture moving mainly to our north but there could be a few showers into northern napa county so we

could get spotty wet weather out of this but not very wide spread. mild conditions overnight with lows in the upper si50s to low 60s. mainly sun by afternoon with highs in the low 80s. mid to upper 60s at pacifica and half moon bay. a mild moon on the coast. downtown san francisco will see a high of 69 and 66 in the sunset district. in the north bay where we have our greatest chances of showers we will see clouds lingering a bit. high temperatures in the low 80s there. east bay ranging from 73 in berkeley to 77 inland east bay been the warmest region with highs in the upper 80s.

here is the 7 day forecast. there will be gradual warming by only a few degrees as we move toward the weekend. sunday and monday we expect the warmest days certainly inland with mid 90s in land those two days. low to mid-80s around the bay and mid to upper 60s around the coast. he will be back at 6:00 with a view of tropical weather. >> just ahead, slipping and stranded. how two window washers were left hanging in the balance. how did this turn out? >> that story is coming up next.

former white house president secretary and gun control advocate james brady who was wounded during the assassination attempt on ronald reagan during 1981. the founders of san francisco's brady therapeutic riding program met him in the 1980s. their daughter was 16 at the time but remembers that visit

vividly. she was crushed to learn of his death this morning and says brady was a warm and funny man. >> he just had a way of -- he was very approachable. it was my desire to see him again. to show him, you know, all of the things that we've done with this program that he was so wonderful to let us use his name for. i wanted to show him the pictures and the videos and the events that have been named after him. >> after the shooting, brady became a gun control advocate. a federal law requiring back ground checks for gun buyers is named after him. brady was 73 years old. >> one man in vie ena had to be treated for shock after getting stuck hundreds of feet in the air. take a look at this picture. he was one of two window cleaners who were left dangling on austria's tallest building there. there it is.
