>> that's what dan has in common with him. >> we're going to have a lot of fun. but we also have two major stories to get to. martha raddatz and jon karl standing by on the new crisis in iraq. president obama's big decision. >> that's right. but let's get right to abc's clayton sandell who is on the big island of hawaii right now where iselle is making landfall. >> reporter: good morning, amy. we are really feeling the power of iselle right now. heavy winds, as you can see and across the island. 25,000 people are without power this morning. hurricane iselle has been downgraded to a tropical storm, still packing 60-mile-per-hour winds. overnight the big island of hawaii pummeled with some big waves, drenching rain and powerful winds. the town of hilo in the bull's-eye for iselle's fury. >> this is a unique situation. it's unprecedented. we haven't had anything like this happen. >> reporter: across the island,

giant trees are no match for the winds. crashing down on highways and power lines and electricity out to 25,000 hopes leaving people in the dark. the only light from power lines catching fire. right now it's 6:00 p.m. and the winds are steady at almost 20 miles an hour. it's now 9:00 and we're seeing winds over 30 miles an hour. it's now midnight and we're seeing gusts here up to 50 miles an hour. some of the 200,000 tourists in hawaii are finding flights between the islands delayed or canceled. one flight from honolulu to los angeles left five hours early to beat the storm. >> there's 22 of us. >> yeah. >> yeah, so it's -- we're looking out but we're hoping the rest of the family gets home okay. >> reporter: those powerful waves running 15 feet higher than normal this morning could flood the coasts and a new fear that saturated ground will give way causing dangerous mudslides.

now the eye of iseel has officially made landfall on the big island. officials warn there's still the rest of the system to pass over. of course, there's hurricane julio coming right after, that's a category 3 storm. amy? >> all right, it's going to be busy there for clayton sandell in the hours to come. let's get now more on the storm's path and what we can expect over the next few hours. >> iselle made landfall just after 2:30 eastern time. there's still quite a few impacts that we need to talk about, it made that landfall five miles east. watch this. the satellite image shows you how quickly the friction of the big island killed that thing. whatever's left will take this track south of the island. so not everyone out of the

woods. our eyes turn to julio, right now a very strong category 3. just north. we'll be tracking this all throughout the morning right here on "good morning america." george? now to the crisis in iraq. president obama authorizing air strikes to protect americans there and humanitarian airdrops, food and water to help tens of thousands of iraqis under siege by the brutal islamic militant group looking to take over iraq and threaten america. abc's martha raddatz broke the news and joins us from washington. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning, george. it's been nearly three years since u.s. forces left iraq, three years since the president announced the war was over. but this morning, u.s. warplanes dropped bombs on the president's order. it is a stunning turn of events. the u.s. poised to enter a war that the president wanted to forget. but with islamic militants

poised to attack erbil, two f-18 this morning dropped bombs on an isis military team. >> we intend to stay vigilant and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in iraq. >> reporter: the president has said there will be no u.s. boots on the ground. >> i will not allow the united states to be dragged into fighting another war in iraq. and so even as we support iraqis as they take the fight to these terrorists, american combat troops will not be returning to fight in iraq. >> reporter: but before the president spoke last night, americans conducted that difficult and dangerous humanitarian mission, three u.s. air force cargo jets escorted by two f-18 fighter jets dropping critical supplies during a low-flying 15-minute pass in a race to stop a catastrophe. tens of thousands of people who fled to the top of a mountain in sinjar now slowly dying from

blistering heat, pleading that there is no water, no bread. nearly 40 children already dead. they are trapped 3,000 feet up with no escape because down below isis terrorists are warning of a slaughter if they return. the u.s. aircraft dropped 5300 gallons of water and 8,000 meals ready to eat. humanitarian and the combat missions will likely be ongoing. stranded families will need more food and warplanes will continue to strike isis targets if they are seen as a threat. george? >> have to be ready for that. i want to go to abc's jon karl at the white house. and, jon, the president ran for president promising to end this war. clearly reluctant to make this decision. clearly in an animated discussion with denis mcdonough after making the decision to

authorize these air strikes. but as i said, this was not a decision he wanted to make. >> reporter: you could sense the tension here at the white house yesterday, george, as he was making this decision. this is a president that is reluctant to use military force anywhere but especially in iraq. he sees it as one of his top accomplishments as president ending america's involvement in an unpopular war but in the end the president felt that his hand was forced. it was forced because you had a humanitarian catastrophe where the u.s. military could come in and make a difference and it was forced because that terrorist group is advancing on a city that has a large u.s. consulate and there is a threat to americans serving there. so in the end, the president's hand forced to make a decision that he has long resisted making. >> jon, the president is still going on vacation tomorrow heading up to martha's vineyard but is also scheduled to return to the white house next week? >> reporter: that's right. it's a two-week vacation at least that's what it's scheduled. he's scheduled to come back for two days.

white house officials won't say what the meetings are for. it's not necessarily about this but you can imagine this will be high on his agenda and as the president goes to martha's vineyard he is taking several of his top advisers, including his national security adviser susan rice, and he has all the communications equipment to handle this. no president as you know, george, truly goes on vacation. >> that's for sure. okay, jon karl, martha raddatz, thanks very much. >> george, thank you. and now to the news breaking overnight on the ebola outbreak. the world health organization is now calling it an international health emergency. and this morning, the husband of nancy writebol is speaking out about her battle with the deadly virus. abc's steve osunsami is tracking it all from atlanta where she is being treated. steve, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy. her husband remains in liberia where he continues their missionary work. he says that he and his wife were choosing to put themselves at great risk because of the incredible need. overnight the world health organization declaring the spread of ebola in west africa an international health emergency.

and this morning, the husband of one of the sick missionaries in isolation here at this atlanta hospital is speaking out for the first time. >> we've spent 40 years together, plus we're junior high sweethearts. >> reporter: david writebol calling home from the deadly hot zone in liberia thanking god and the doctors for bringing his wife, nancy, back from the brink of death. >> i'm grateful and happy that she's in a place that enables her to receive the best care possible and that will give her every opportunity to get better and to recover. >> reporter: here she is helping disinfect doctors in the ebola ward of her african missionary hospital before getting sick needing this emergency flight to atlanta tuesday for treatment. >> i really want to give thanks to god for providing those people but also more than that, to also thank them. for their contribution. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview we reached the six

university students abroad now stranded in liberia after flights from the region were suspended. >> i was freaking out. >> reporter: they're working with british airways to fly home through ghana before school starts august 20th. >> i personally would like everyone to know that we are safe. we are safe and we are healthy. the only thing we're concerned about is getting home as soon as possible. >> reporter: here in the u.s. the cdc telling congress they're sending more teams to africa to stop the disease at its source. amy. >> all right, steve osunsami with the latest from atlanta on that. and we want to head now to "gma weekend" anchor dan harris with the morning's other top stories. good morning, good morning, everybody. we'll start here with new fighting breaking out in the middle east overnight. the cease-fire coming to a sudden and violent end with palestinian militants firing 20 rockets into israel and then israel firing back. a young boy in gaza was killed and talks for a long-term truce are now seriously in jeopardy. new worries on wall street.

stocks opening today at their lowest level since april. investors are worried about russia's aggression in ukraine and a possible invasion there raising tensions even further, reports that russian bombers once again approached american airspace near alaska. a homeowner in suburban detroit who shot and killed an unarmed teenager on his porch may now face life in prison. the parents of 19-year-old renisha mcbride were visibly relieved when a jury convicted theodore wafer of second degree murder. wafer shot mcbride when she banged on his door after a car crash. a frightening incident in the major leagues overnight. look at this, marlins reliever dan jennings hit in the head by a line drive. it's tough to watch. he suffered a concussion but the good news is -- we're happy to report his ct scan came back negative. this incident may be a reason why more pitchers will follow the lead of alex torres. he now wears a padded hat on the mound now. and check out this video from arkansas. watch the top of your screen as a car goes airborne flying into two police helicopters in that field there.

we'll show you again. the driver apparently was speeding and missed a turn. and finally, there have been all sorts of strange security breaches at the white house. a stolen cessna, back in the '90s, a naked dude just a few months ago but what sent the secret service into lockdown mode last night takes the cake. a 2-year-old somehow slipped away from his parents, through the metal gates and on to the front lawn of the white house. after catching the invader the secret service put out this statement saying "we were going to wait until he learned how to talk to question him, but in lieu of that he got a time-out and was sent on his way with his parents. we don't know the baby's name yet but according to this tweet from the washington bureau chief of "the new york times," this is a sketch of the suspect and according to his parents or his or her parents, we don't know, the child has been grounded until age 19. that's your news. back to you. >> you know, i was actually there when the cessna landed in the backyard of the white house. you go to work, hey, a little plane there in the backyard.

it was crazy. yeah. >> everyday occurrence. >> now we turn to those closing arguments in the oscar pistorius murder trial. his defense team wrapping up their case this morning trying to convince the judge who will decide the blade runner's fate. abc's lama hasan has the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: and good morning to you, george. a day after the prosecution delivered its final blows, today, oscar pistorius' defense team is striking back giving a detailed time line of what they say happened that fateful night trying to prove the olympic athlete is not a cold-blooded killer. this morning, the last stand for oscar pistorius as his defense attorney roux delivers his final arguments painting pistorius as scared, needing to protect himself and not a murderer. >> now you're standing at the door. you're vulnerable. you're anxious, you're trained as an athlete to react to sound and then -- >> reporter: roux was adamant that there was no argument the night pistorius killed his model

girlfriend reeva steenkamp, maintaining pistorius thought she was in the bedroom when he fired four shots through a locked bathroom door at who he thought was an intruder. >> if i stand behind someone with his finger on that trigger and he's in a fearful state and i may clap my hands behind him, in some instances some will fire. >> reporter: also accusing the police of bungling the investigation and tampering with the evidence. >> don't come to court and protest a scene and then cross-examine the accused as if that was the scene. >> reporter: the defense claiming screams heard by neighbors occurred after those shots rang out and that they came from pistorius crying out for help and not from an argument. four months, the prosecution has pointed out inconsistencies in pistorius' testimony. >> so many lies in such a short period. >> reporter: but today roux striking back, saying that even if there's a reasonable possibility pistorius is telling the truth, he is entitled to the benefit of the doubt.

a residential street in oak ridge, new jersey. >> that is a bypedal bear. >> two weeks later there he goes again. just two doors down. >> he's looking at me. >> it's scary at first but after you've seen it a couple of times it just becomes weird. >> reporter: he says local residents have nicknamed this bear vinny. it turns out state wildlife officials have been monitoring vinny ever since he was reported back in june. they say he's a juvenile under 3 years old and weighs about 250 pounds and he is walking upright because his two front paws are injured. >> more than likely it was a car accident. bears can walk on their hind legs very well. >> do you see him? >> reporter: officials say the bear and his bear brethren are not a danger to people. and they have no plans to capture or relocate him. live and let live. ron claiborne, abc news, new york. >> oh, they can't help him with his paws? >> i'm surprised they're not going to capture him. >> i know, i feel like he needs some help. >> if only to give him medical help. when he notices the cameras

hypnotherapy and another that lives a nomadic lifestyle all coming up. >> okay, that's coming up. but first, that sensational trial out of florida involving three teens in a love triangle. pedro bravo charged with murdering his best friend who was in a romantic relationship with his ex-girlfriend. prosecutors are revealing what they say was the murder weapon in court and abc's linzie janis is tracking the case. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. prosecutors unveiling in court thursday pieces of evidence they say were found in searches of pedro bravo's car and apartment in the days after his friend went missing. the items they say prove how bravo murdered his victim. overnight florida prosecutors revealing more evidence in the death of christian aguilar showing jurors this photograph of the belt they say pedro bravo used to kill his former best friend. bravo allegedly sedating aguilar with a concoction of drugs in a gatorade bottle then using the belt to strangle him, a process that took 13 minutes.

prosecutors claim the murder taking place inside bravo's suv in a gainesville walmart parking lot. the two friends spotted shopping together in the store, the last time aguilar was seen alive. >> there's a small impact in the windshield itself where the glass was broken. >> reporter: prosecutors showing the jury thursday photos of a cracked windshield covered in duct tape and bloodstains on the suv's seats and on a pair of shoe insoles and a can of paint kept in the car. all signs investigators say of a violent struggle. >> that's the location where the shovel was recovered from. >> reporter: and photos of this mud-caked shovel found near bravo's gainesville apartment. prosecutors implying it was used to bury his victim. prosecutors claim aguilar's murder was the result of a love triangle. bravo dating erika friman in high school. friman calling it off heading to gainesville for college and dating aguilar. >> i didn't want to throw him over the edge or anything and

say, by the way, i'm dating a mutual friend of ours. >> reporter: they say when bravo found out he hatched a plot to kill his high school friend in order to get friman back. bravo's attorneys say he is not guilty of murder. well, bravo is charged with first degree murder, kidnapping, illegally transporting a dead body and providing false statements to law enforcement. he faces life in prison. if he's convicted. george. >> thanks. dan abrams here right now and, boy, the prosecutors have quite a case there. >> there are very few cases that go to trial with this much evidence against someone. you're talking about physical evidence that linzie laid out, you've got computer searches, you've got video evidence, you've got motive in this case. you've got almost everything you could possibly have and the defense is, yeah, we were together and you know what, yeah, we got in a fight and i bloodied him and then i left and that's the last thing that i know. i mean that is a really long shot type of defense in a case like this. >> and so what happens now with the defense?

do they put pedro bravo on the stand? >> you know, ordinarily in a case like this i'd say no way he's going to take the stand. yet when you look at what the defense is and think about what a long shot defense it is, seems to me it may be the only hope that they have is that somehow he's a really good witness who will lay out exactly what he claims happened, that, yes, we're together. then we get in a fight and then i leave, but it's just -- it's such a tough defense that you think about something like taking the stand, and you say, it might be the only shot that he has. >> the emotional impact of having the ex-girlfriend on the stand. >> oh, absolutely. she's the motive. i mean, she's laying out point by point exactly why he would have done this talking about how emotionally fragile he'd become. you know, he did internet searches for unsolved murders

and sleeping pills and, again, the allegation here is that he may have drugged the victim before the attack, so this is a tough defense. >> okay. dan abrams, thanks very much. >> all right, thanks, guys. turning now to an incredible story of road rage revenge. a california driver shot several times decided to then chase after his assailant and the whole thing was captured on a 911 call and video. abc's brandi hitt has the story. 911 emergency. what are you reporting? >> yeah i just got shot at eastbound 91 at harbor boulevard. just got shot at. >> reporter: a desperate call for help in the middle of a car-to-car shooting. >> are you hit? >> yes, i'm hit. >> reporter: the victim kenneth baker merging on to a southern california freeway in broad daylight when his window suddenly exploded. glass spraying his face. >> i noticed where the bullets hit on the side of my truck. it was inches away from my head. i didn't know this man was trying to kill me. >> reporter: baker says he didn't recognize the shooter in the car next to him and decided to chase him down calling 911 with one arm while nursing gunshot wounds to the other. >> i think my arm is shot.

i'm trying to catch up to him now. >> okay, well, that's probably not the best idea if he's shooting at you. >> i'm -- i'm right behind him now. >> reporter: he says the two swerved in and out of traffic at speeds up to 95 miles per hour. baker cutting across bushes and freeway exits to stay on his tail. officers eventually taking over the pursuit and arresting 32-year-old jerry valentin from arizona. >> this outcome could have been so much worse. >> absolutely. it could have been much more of a tragedy. we discourage victims and witnesses to engage with armed individuals. >> had i not chased him down, the man would have gotten away. now he's in jail. >> reporter: valentin has pleaded not guilty to four felonies including attempted murder in a crime that for now appears to be a random act of rage. for "good morning america," brandi hitt, abc news, los angeles. >> oh. scary stuff. all right, time now for the

wrestled to the ground and handcuffed and then mom brought down and dragged off by a man in shorts who her lawyer says is the casino's head of security. >> it ended up with early termination of what was supposed to be a very nice family trip. >> reporter: all this comes as atlantic city is struggling to improve its image and appeal to tourists. and the mayor was upset by what he saw when we showed him some of the videos. >> beating can't be tolerated. it's unacceptable. violence can't be tolerated. >> reporter: harrah's employees claim the binzes and the other two were the aggressors. mr. brian ross from abc news. this director of security would not answer any of our questions. >> sir, we're not allowed to comment on any of this. >> reporter: you think this is appropriate? did you go over the line? later in a written statement, the casino said its security personnel are trained to use the least amount of force required while taking necessary steps to protect guests, employees and themselves. but there was no comment on any of the cases involving the dramatic videos. brian ross, abc news, atlantic city.

seth matlins calls it a public health crisis and is challenging dove to live up to its real beauty campaign. abc's abbie boudreau has the story. ♪ >> reporter: they're the flawless photos like these that even some a-listers say are too touched up. kate winslet criticizing this cover claiming it overly slims her thighs. lorde annoyed with a photo she says was altered. even keira knightley protesting a publicity photo that the star claims boosted her bust. and this morning father of two and marketing executive seth matlins says he too has had enough with retouching, so matlins started a petition online hoping to expose what he describes as an industrywide public health crisis calling on dove, famous or their decade-long real beauty campaign, urging the company to make real beauty more real. >> advertisers need to recognize that they are responsible and accountable for the health consequences that these ads are creating.

>> reporter: matlins is asking dove to set a bar by signing his pledge acknowledging whether or not they photoshop their ads and if they are photoshopped, to not run them in places where children can see them. in your opinion does dove photoshop even in this real campaign? >> i don't know what dove does and that's the point. the point is we don't know what is real anymore. >> i think today we're seeing the brands are trying to be more real, and we see it in the marketing that's coming out, but there's still so much work to be done. >> reporter: dove has yet to sign on saying in a statement, "when the dove campaign for real beauty launched in 2004, we made a commitment to all women that we would not distort any of our images to create an unrealistic view of beauty." still, matlins is hoping his passion project will call for change. >> this is not going to fix everything, but it is the ethical thing to do. it is a step in the right direction, and what i'm confident of is we're going to be no worse off. >> reporter: for "good morning america," abbie boudreau, abc news, los angeles.
