tropical storm iselle slammed into hawaii big island today. trees were knocked down, power outages are affecting thousands of people and all of this is happening ahead of an even more powerful storm that could reach hawaii by monday. good morning, eric thomas in for kristen sze. >> our metrologist is following

tropical iselle. at the san francisco airport, we're checking on air travel to hawaii. what is the latest on iselle? >> reporter: the latest is what we expected, and that is flooding rains. nearly 10 inches of rain falling in some parts of the big island, especially near volcano national park, five inches. and we've got five inches around hilo right now. in fact that flood warning continues for a half-hour for the southeastern half of the island. and that's because of the heavy rain that continue to pound there. even though the winds are weakening, we're seeing wave after wave after shower. it's reaching up to honolulu right now even though the heart of the storm is over the big island. as we take a look at what's going on, tropical storm warnings until at least monday morning. we could have 39 mile-per-hour winds across the chain.

he's take a look at how it's shaping up. it's falling apart and sticking at the island and that's why with 50 mile-per-hour winds we're seeing the rain. tomorrow afternoon hawaii time it's going to be pulling away and moving away. we'll focus on julio. it's going to produce pretty cool waves to surf on but it will not be a one-two punch as far as the hurricane coming in. the big threat now is the flooding that's coming out. we'll keep on eye on you. >> mike is at the playground build where we'll be joining him later. right now it is a little bit after 8:00 in the morning on hawaii big island. thousands 0 people are waking up to find out their power is still out this morning. as we told you tropical iselle

forced more than 1200 people on the big island into evacuation shelters. strong wunds and rain brought down trees and power lines. in oahu they're expecting the storm this afternoon. >> we're hunkered down, in the drk, and it's starting to get noisy out there. it's a little scarey. the winds are starting to howl and the rain is going in all different directions. >> and that was abc news camera woman jenny. she's riding out the storm in her home on the big island. schools and government offices remain close. hurricane julio is close behind and could reach the island over the weekend. >> several flight to hawaii have been canceled and some local families have had to cut their vacations short out fear they would be trapped by the storm. alyssa herrington is life with more. >> reporter: the good news is

most flights are on schedule today but some travelers i talked to did not want to risk it and came home from their hawaiian vie occasion early. >> we were supposed to go to the big island and took a detour. >> reporter: this family is back from their hawaii yann vacation two days early. >> we just wanted to be safe and back home. >> reporter: they booked a flight from hand lew lew to sfo to try and beat the bad weather. the ten-year-old admits the shorter vacation meant she wasn't able to do everything she was looking forward to. >> i wanted to go on a helicopter tour and i wanted to actually swim with dolphins. >> you were going to show her the lava rocks and all of that. because of the tropical storm we were scared because they were predicting the landfalls and high winds. >> reporter: the tropical storm started grounding the flight yesterday. eight total have been canceled in and out of sfo, this includes

four arrivals this morning. one alaska air flight was canceled. a departure to maui delayed more than two hours. here are a few of the lucky ones to get on a plane that took off from honolulu. >> rain at the airport. >> you could hear the people at the airport getting stressed out. >> reporter: this video shows passengers there, many forced to make last-minute changes. one flight to los angeles actually left five hours ahead of schedule to get travelers out of town before iselle stormed in. several carriers are waving fees for travelers who have to make changes to their flight. live at sfo, alyssa herrington. >> we'll continue to follow the situation in hawaii on air and online. our coverage continues now on twitter at abc 7 news bay area.

concord police are investigating a deadly accident involving a motorcycle. the crash was at the intersection of oak cove grove. a 29-year-old man from concord who was driving the motorcycle died at the scene. police say he was speeding as he approached the intersection and ran a read light. police say the driver of the car did stop and has cooperated with the investigation. police are investigating a groping incident. a come said she was assaulted shortly after 6:00 last night. she reported the incident to stanford police and described the suspect as a white man in his mid 20s, 6'3" with a thin build, short hair, a light beard and was wearing a light blue shoirt sw blue jeans. she says he was walking a gray pit bull. the man had a tattoo with unknown writing on his right arm. >> we want to continue to talk about the exciting news. we're involved with a project to

improve the quality of life for kwids kids in east oakland. >> we're pairing up with disney to build a knew playground in just a few hours. kristen sze is there. but we'll begin with reporter nick smith with a unique view. >> reporter: i'm used to holding the microphone but today i picked up a ham ma because this is what it's all about. turning this ugly park upside down and transforming it into something beautiful not only for the kids but for the community to. >> we're proud to be here. >> reporter: if you're anywhere near concordia park, you're sure to hear the screams and cheers coming from a group of excited volunteers. morning news anchor kristen sze reminded everyone of how many young lives will be touched by creating this new play space.

>> we're going to put up an awesome playground in six hours' time. >> reporter: we paired up with disney and ka-boom to transnormal this playground from top to bottom. >> we believe that play is an important part of every child's life. >> she helped to leave hundreds of volunteers, many of whom from this east oakland community through the paces. she says making over the park is about more than assembling slides and sand boxes. she says what children will take away will last a lifetime. >> play is more than moving your body. it's engaging your mind and it's also socially engaging your peers, adults and others. >> reporter: the next six hours are crucial to the makeover. this time lapsed video shows some of the preps being done and only hint at the number of nails, hammers and hands necessary to make it happened. >> i feel like i have been sprinkled with pixie dust. >> she suz what are now

they dropped 500-pound laser guided bombs. the pentagon says isis was using the artillery to shell forces near where the u.s. personnel are located. thousands of families have fled to the top of a mountain to escape the threat of isis militants below. >> carefully and responsibly. that's what we're doing on that mountain. >> right now the faa is prohibiting u.s. airlines and other commercial carriers from flying over iraq saying hostilities there could threaten safety. a south african judge announced that she will give the verdict of oscar pistorius on september 11th. the judge's announcement came as both sides rested in the five-month long trial. prosecutors claim pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend last year. the defense says they believe he was defending himself against an

you're looking live at pictures from concordia park in oakland where you see folks mixes up concrete there in the wheelbarrows. abc 7, disney and ka-boom are teaming up to build a new playground. they say we're going to do this in six hours. i think we may do it in five and a half. cheryl and i will be healed over after the newscast to take part. >> that's right. well right now some trouble for a google car driver who was mapping a street view in arkansas. the 29-year-old driver crash into a man's car. the problem started when the google car went the wrong way down a street, made the u-turn, tried to merge on to another street and sideswiped a car. neither driver was injured. but the google car drive was cited for careless driving.

francisco, upper 60s to mid 70s around the bay, and 90s in antioch. if you're going out and about, maybe up to santa rosa, we've got the sonoma county fair continuing through sunday. we're going to be in the mid 80s. but if you're hanging around for the evening festivities the, it will cool to 65 degrees. we've got other things going on too, like outside land. it's going to be in the 60s there. at least there's in drizzle this year. now let's head over towards one more stop, you're going to the game, twins in town taking on the a's. let's wrap it up by showing you what's going to happen tonight. you can see right across the bay and it's trying to stretch into the east bay valley. mid to upper 50s for the rest of us. look at the low clouds. afternoon sunshine, temperatures truck wait a degree or two depending on how what quickly that morning marine layer blows
