has the story from abc. >> the u.s. military stroke two more isis targets in northern iraq near the city of erbil, taking out two mortar positions, a convoy, and extremist fighters. this video shows the impact on the ground after u.s. fighter jets dropped 500 pound batter bombs on isis artillery on iraq. artillery were launched by this from the uss george bush, to strike isis targets that the obama administration said were threatening american targets. >> it's actually easier for the u.s. military to target than it was during the iraq war. >> a dire humanitarian crisis is developing in northern iraq. thousands of families have fled to the top of a mountain, walking miles to escape the threat of isis militants below. this man said he left everything behind. and there's no food, no water. the u.s. launches a challenging

and dangerous aid mission. three u.s. air force cargo jets dropped critical supplies, 5300 gallons of water and 8,000 meals ready to eat. president obama is now the fourth consecutive u.s. president to order military action in iraq. he came into office pledging to end the u.s. involvement in the war there, and did in 2011. now he insists he will not let the u.s. to get dragged back in another one. u.s. troops will not be returning to fight in iraq. >> white house officials insist any u.s. military actions would be targeted air strikes, not a counterterrorism mission. the best way to deal with the threat of isis is to let the iraqis deal with it. >> right now, people on the big island of hawaii are cleaning up after tropical storm iselle hit over night. more than a foot of rain fell in the island overnight.

wind toppled trees, at one point, 25,000 holes were without electricity. >> any power restoration support that's necessary, if we have to bring in even equipment from the mainland, we think at the present time, we will not have to do that, but we're ready to do it if necessary. >> government offices and schools are closed for the day, and now iselle is moving out west into oahu, and the state has to get ready for hurricane jul julio, which is still a couple days out. we have been tracking the path of izel for several days now. here's how the storm looked when it hit land 2:00 a.m. local time. spencer christian joins us now. spencer, good news is it appea s s julio is taking a more northern path and might miss the island. >> the island has taken a pounder from izel. let's get to the satellite image

and show you what's going on. we have serious weather conditions in the region. iselle struck and made lafrl at 2:00 a.m. with tropical storm winds gusting up to 85 miles per hour. sustained winds 60 miles per hour, and up to 14 inches of rainfall has been measured in some parts of the big island. it's moving centered about 25 miles south of honolulu, moving to the west about 15 miles per hour away from the islands and producing heavy winds and rain. let's zoom in to the big island where we have a flash flood warning until 2:30 hawaiian time, and rain is diminishing across the island, but flash flooding has been a problem. a tropical storm warning is in effect diin addition to the flashflood warning. winds are lashing the islands west of the big island and heavy rainfall continues. rain is diminishing across the big island. now let's take a look at

hurricane julio, which is a powerful category 2. the sustains winds 105 miles per hour, gusts to 125 miles per hour. it is expected to take a track as larry said to the nort of the islands over the weekend, expected to have a minimal impact if it stays on this track, let's hope it does, but still, those areas already hard hit by iselle have a lot of recovery ahead of them. i want to point out i'm here at concordia park in oak lbd and i'll tell you why i'm here, involved in a community service project with my abc 7 colleagues. you'll learn about it later. >> thanks much. we'll sooee you in a few minute. we had a great time at the kaboom playground bill. >> the tropical storm has let to cancellations of flights to and from the islands. cutting off or cutting short vacations to the islands. alicia harrington spoke to some of those directly effected. >> we were supposed to go to the big island, and we took a detour

and came to san francisco. >> this family from san ramon is back from their hawaiian vacation two days earl arwrethe dad said the tropical storm forced them to cut the storm short. >> we wanted to be safe and back home. >> they booked a flight from honolulu to sfo to try to beat the bad weather. the 10-year-old admits she wasn't able to do everything she wanted to do. >> i wanted to go on a helicopter tour in kona, and i wanted to actually swim with dolphins. >> and because of the tropical storm, it scared us because they were predicting the landpfalls and high winds. we didn't want to take a chance. >> tropical storm iselle grounded some flights yesterday. eight flights have been canceled in and out, that includes four arrivals this morning. at one airport, one flight to kauai was canceled and a departure to maui delayed two

hours. this man and his sons from lose altos are one of the lucky ones to get on the plane headed to the airport. >> rain at the airport. the people at the airport were getting stressed out. parents were, get out of here. >> this video shows passengers there, many forced to make last-minute changes. one flight to los angeles actually left five hours ahead of schedule to get travelers out of town before iselle storms in. several carriers are waiving fees for people who need to make changes or cancellations. thoet include delta, unielted and american airlines. >> emergency crews are on the scene of a deadly accident at a bus repair yard in oakland. police say a man was found crushed to death. sky 7 hd shows us the scene just off i-80 and coliseum way. just after noon, coworkers found the mechanic between two buses. now police are trying to figure out when and how this accident

happened. >> this has been declared one of the worst droughts in california history, yet it appears not everyone is getting their message and doing their part. >> laura anthony is live where they say they shouldn't be judged just by the color of their lawn. laura. >> hi. this is one portion, just one portion of this vast uc berkeley campus. it's a grassy area that for the most part looks lush and green. crast it with this. the front lawn of the state capitol in sacramento. it's turned from green to brown to barely dirt in many places. bare dirt. the outgrowth of a decision there to stop watering entirely. they're even fine explaining to visitors why the grass looks so bad. here at uc berkeley, they have stopped watering during the day, but not at night when they're using water from east bay mud not reclaims or recycles. still, they say cal is doing its

part. >> water use overall on campus is down 5% to 9% since the governor declared the drought official at the end of january, which is great. we're working hard to reduce our water use even more. water use in the residents halls is down 30% in the last six years. >> the governor asked for 20%, but some of the state institutions haven't gone that far. >> well, we all need to be doing it, frankly. there is no excuse. this is a drought. it's a severe drought. we need to step up. >> a spokesman for the uc office of the president told us systemwide, 7 of the 15 campuses have reduced usage per capita of potable water by 20%. here at uc berkeley, there is a plan to further increase conservation over the next few months. among the items as part of the plan, removing about six of these lawns. at uc berkeley, laura anthony.

>> thank you. now to the mend aseeno county where a major wildfire has exploded growing to more than 5400 acres. the lodge fire is burning south of the community of leggatt. flames jumped across the eel river and are now spreading eastward. firefighters are preparing to protect the neighborhood that's in danger of being consumed by the fire. containment now at 30%. >> in oregon, more than 700 homes are threatened by another massive wildfire there. residents have been told to evacuate a neighborhood fleer the columbia river goencheorge. it's expected to grow in size, pushed by gusty afternoon winds. the fire started tuesday in dry brush. a new fellowship launched today will help fight air pollution from the u.s. pacific coast to asia. the city's clean air partnership was announced today. it's a collaboration between the

u.s. epa, clean air asia, and taiwanese epa. it will offer intensives to encourage people to reduce pollution and train leaders to take those steps. environmental leaders say this is a landmark partnership. >> this would be the day where we lost the partnership that actually made a difference to cities across asia in terms of the quality of life for the citizens in the cities and a reduction in air pollution in the cities. >> the epa blames air pollution for more than 3.5 million deaths in the world each year and said it cost the global economy $3.5 trillion a year. >> this is really exciting day for us at abc 7 as well as in an east bay community. we teamed up with disney and the nonprofit kaboom to build a new playground and it all went up in a few hours. you're very dangerous with power tools, by the way. no idea you could do that.

that. anybody who know goes door to door trying to trick you, you don't want to deal with them. they could work for a good company. they could just be the rip-off. do your homework, really. >> if they're trying to sell your steaks on top of that -- >> you don't want that guy, either. >> kyle e-mails, i live in san francisco. i have a neighbor who has multiple cars for one home. is there any limitation on the number of cars to an address. >> all of us in san francisco have a neighbor that has multiple cars. really, no, there's absolutely no regulations about this. there are two ways to battle this, though. if they live in a neighborhood where they get the little stickers on the bumpers that give them the right to park there, you're only allowed four per household. if they have more than four per household, you can turn them in for that. they're only allowed to be parked on the street for sfr72 hours at a time, so you can turn them in for that if it sits there over and over. and third, if they're actually trying to sell the cars, they're

gold, and people are stealing it. but now, it's putting the town in danger. >> sunny and warm across the bay area. more to come for the weekend. i'll have your forecast in a moment. >> this is abc 7 news. >> they broke in the side door, trashed a couple places. >> you think you live in a good neighborhood, but that whole sense of security is gone a little built, too. >> very scary. neighbors are on edge in san jose. i'm cheryl jennings. >> i'm dan ashley. they're experiencing a rash of home burglars and they say they can't rely on police to solve the crimes. in the bay area, residents are banning together to protect themselves. vic lee is there tonight with the story. vic? >> well, dan, this is an old neighborhood, always considered to be one of the safest in san jose. but now this neighborhood along with so many others in san jose has become vulnerable, so neighbors are arming themselves,

not with guns but with security systems. for one homeowner, it was just a bit too late. >> the break-in happened in the late afternoon yesterday. no one was home. the burglar or burglars used a small prybar to pop open a side window. they trashed this room and walked into the bedroom where they stole all of this person's jewelry. >> you feel violated. essentially, your security is gone. you feel violated. >> she said it took a long time for an officer to respond to their 911 call. when he did come, she was in for another surprise. >> i found out there is no burglary unit in san jose and nobody to really follow up on it. >> the officer apologetically told her all he could do was take the report and file it, that it was a result of the police staffing shortage in san jose. when her neighbors got wind of the burglary, they banded together and began their own investigation. they found that just before the burglary, two women were knocking on doors, asking for

donations. neighbor kevin tranhas cameras mounted outside his home. they captured one of them at his front door. she left immediately when his mother declined to make a donation. >> usually when people ask for donations, they're a little more persistent. >> something else suspicions, the cameras caught a dark colors sedan driving slowly on the street, driving forward and backing up as if the driver were casing out homes. >> you know, there's plenty of parking we have here. he wasn't looking for parking. >> tran gave the video to the investigating officer. in the meantime, they called adt security systems which sent ed chavez over to install an alarm system with cameras. she hopes her family's sense of security will return, and she also hoped the burglar will be caught and her mother's jewelry will be learned. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> police in pallo alto are looking for a dog walker who tried having a weird conversation with a woman b
