it happened at 6:30 on california avenue and amherst street. a man was walking a pit bull when he met the woman and started talking to her. >> they walked for several blocks and then the suspect began to talk to her inappropriately. at this point, she became uncomfortable, and the suspect then groped her on the outer part of her clothing. >> she ran off and the woman pulled out her cell phone to call police. the suspect is a white man in his 20s, 6'4" and about 220 pounds. the dog he was walking was a gray pit bull with white spots on each paw. an investigation is under way after a mechanic was found crushed to death today in oakland. sky 7 hd shows us the scene at the charter pro bus company off 880 and coliseum way in oakland. police say his coworkers found the man dead just after noon, and he was trapped between the two buses. it's not known yet how long the man was there before his coworkers found him. >> tropical storm iselle

continues to weaken over hawaii. right now, oahu is getting het with heavy rain and strong, gusty winds. when the storm came ashore on hilo, on the big island, wind blew down trees and power lines. at one point, 25,000 homes lost electricity. repair crews are taking a bit of a break, breathing easier, because new models show hurricane julio tracking north of the island, so it will not be a direct hit. hawaii's governor says so far, no deaths or serious injuries have been reported. emergency rorkers here in the bay area are communicating with crews on the ground, trying to provide relief and assistance in hawaii. lilian kim is in the news room with that part of the story. >> hawaii, california, nevada, and arizona are part of region 9 of the federal emergency management agency. its headquarters are based in oakland, and since yesterday, workers there have been busy monitoring the situation in hawaii. >> the weather channel, the storm tracks we have. >> fema's regional respontaneous coordination center is up and

working. monitors are displaying satellite images of hawaii. half of the people in the room are fema workers. the rest represent other entities including the army corps of engineers, the coast guard. they're communicating with the troops on the ground. >> they're prepositioning items, insuring transportation is lined up should we need to fly generators from the distribution center, as an example. >> crews are assessing the damage from the ground and the air. iselle hit the big island the hardest. >> there's a lot of water coming from the mountain because there's a lot of rain up there now. so the rivers are running pretty strong. >> many bay area residents who were in hawaii vacationing left before iselle even reached the island. at least those lucky enough to get a flight out. >> starting to get a little stormy. you could really feel the winds. you could kind of hear the people at the airport getting stressed out. the parents were like, let's get

out of here. >> as for julio, it's now yearing away from the island. at this point, the worst appears to be over. >> you heard that another hurricane is about to hit hawaii. let's check with spencer christian who is tracking the storm, and spencer joins us from oakland. >> okay, cheryl. let's go to our satellite radar composite image. i want to show you where the storm is. iselle made landfall overnight as a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds. 60 miles per hour, leaving behind in some places up to 14 inches of rainfall. center of the storm is west of honolulu, pulling away from the island, but as you can see, lots of rain is stitt hitting the chain of islands. we'll give you a look at hurricane hjulio, packing maximm sustained winds of 100 miles per hour, gusts of 125. this storm is expected to take a track fairly well to the nrth of

the chain and have a minimal effect over the weekend on the islands. that's good news because there's a lot of flooding left behind from iselle. >> thanks very much. the united states is ramping up its involvement in iraq, at least from the air. you can see smoke rising after the pentagon set american fighter jets bombed a piece of artility near erbil. militants were using the large gun to shell kurdish forces bombing the city. this comes as they're air lifting food to religious authorities under attack in iraq. president obama has vowed again to not send american combat troops back into the country. the u.s. humanitarian effort and military campaign now under way simultaneously are closely linked in a cause and effect sort of way. reporter ivan watson explains as he shows you some of the faces behind the conflict hiding in st. joseph's church in urbeerbi. >> let's show you what's at stake right now.

this is a 40-day-oldish waw, and he's one of an estimated 100,000 iraqi christian displaced people. refugees with his mother and 2-year-old sister here. they have fled their home in the last 48 hours, and they have spent their second night in this church. this is just one family. we're going to try to spin around. and show you a little bit of the scene here. there are hundreds of people who have been sleeping in the pews of this church. this is of course a highly symbolic scene. we're in a place of worship, in the yard of this church, there are more thousands of iraqi christians. everybody tells the same story. that the kurdish militia withdrew from their towns.

several towns, and after they withdrew, these families literally had minutes to pack whatever they could, find whatever vehicle they could, and flee. now they have taken shelter in the kurdistan region. the united nations says some 200,000 people have fled. >> very powerful images there. in other news today, here locally, a huge defeat for the ncaa. major colleges can't top the basketball and football players from selling their rights. they say the ncaa's limits on what collegiate players can receive playing sports violates antitrust laws. it opens the way for athletes to get big payouts after they leave college. ed o'bannon and 19 others filed the lawsuit. ncaa says it disagreed with the decision and may appeal. >> a major battle is under way right now in mend aseeno county

in the race to stop a lightning sparked wildfire that exploded in size. it's now 5400 acres. it's burning a heavily wooded and very remote area of the country south of the town of leggatt. 35 structures are threatened wrer more than 1700 firefighters have responded. containment at this point is at 30%. so a lot more work there to do. >> california's whooping cough epidemic continues to escalate and it could get worse as kids head back to school this month. the california department of health said there have been nearly 7,000 cases of protussis so far this year. that's nearly triple last year's number. there have been more than 2,000 cases in the bay area this year. marin, sonoma, napa, and solano counties have substantially higher numbers than counties across the state. >> well, trying to get through california's historic drought is hard enough, but one town find out the hard way somebody is stealing their water. it's happening in nevada city

about one hour east of sacramento. george has more. >> about 6,000 gallons of water. >> it didn't take the principal long to figure out how with school out for the summer they went through 6,000 gallons of water in a single weekend. >> the students weren't here, toilets weren't flushing. drinking fountains weren't working and the water was gone. then we started hearing that other people are missing it and putting two and two together, somebody stole our water. >> the same thing happened at the family resource center. >> when they steal from us, they steal from the whole community. >> most serious of all is the water theft at the north san juan fire station's twin 5,000 gallon tanks. when they went to fill a water tender following a fire call, they discovered the storage tanks were nearly empty. 8,000 gallons gone overnight. >> this is right in our historical district. they're very important. >> the low capacity well out back takes three days to fill those tanks. with no fire hydrants, this

we want to show you an aerial view of concordia park in oakland. people have been working all day long on a project to improve the quality of life for children in east oakland. it's one of the city's most underserved nairbds. we're teaming up with our parent company disney and the nonprofit kaboom to build a new playground in just a few hours today. we were there along with many of our colleagues and hundreds of other volunteers. we were all so happy to do our part. we showed you at the beginning of the project, july 22nd. the old playground was demolished and taken away. then this week, folks start ed drilling holes for new

equipment. they came in boxes and boxes delivered today so everything could be ready for today. we're joined live now to pick up the story. >> you know, the comparison that comes to my mind today, like an old-fashioned barn raising. it wasn't a barn in this case, it was a playground, but when everybody gets together and works, it's amazing what happens. for people who work together every day, this was a new look and a new at tide. you're dressed differently. >> oh. yes. >> crystal hunter works at espn. james huntington runs the assignment desk at abc 7. >> got a tool. >> it is sweat equity times roughly 200 people in the millsmont neighborhood where a small miracle took place today. it's not unlike one of those old-fashioned barn raisings, but in this place, a playground in six hours. this is parts of a plip with our corporate parent, the walt disney company, which has worked

with kaboom, with disney employees, some of whom you might recognize to build almost 50 of these play grounds around the country. why this one here? >> there was an old playground falling apart, there wasn't funding available. our company got involved. >> getting this place built in a day, not always easy. >> after we get the beams, we're going to -- >> each of us came with a different level of experience. >> yeah, i installed an air conditioner by myself. >> now she can add a playground with help, of course. if you take 200 people, multiplooi their efforts into 1200 hours of manpower here's what you get for the sweat and labor, a playground designed by the people who will use it, a great feeling among those who use it. amazing what can happen with a few come together on a project just because. as we come back live, we should note that we're not completely finished. clearly from the caution tape you see here, the cement beneath

organizers said providing low-income kids with school supplies help narrow the achievement gap between them and students of families with greater means. one sad reality, none of the backpacks is blue or red because of gang problems in certain communities. >> teen activist malalausophsy took part in an event in menlo park. the 17-year-old took questions from facebook users around the world, including mulenda gates and arianna huffington. she also spoke about her crusade to help girls go to school even though the taliban banned her from doing so in her region of pakistan. >> first option was to remain silent and wait to be killed. and the second option was to speak up and then be killed. and i chose the second one. >> she now lives in england after getting shot in the head

by the taliban while riding a school bus in pakistan. >> the clean-up has ramped unon high way 87 in san jose after a dump truck tipped over. as you can see from this video, the truck toppled onto its side. several lanes were blocked, backing up traffic for at least a mile. there you see it from sky 7 hd. according to the chp, the driver only has minor injuries, we're gld to tell you that. it took several hours to right the truck and clean up all the debris on the highway. >> we talked about abc 7 helping building a disney kaboom playground in oakland. i wanted to show you how spencer christian spent some of his time. he had more energy than the kids out there. >> how cool is that? and that's not spencer's only

trick with a hula hoop. he can do a jump rope thing with it, too. pretty impressive. >> i caught that on my cell phone. spencer, good job out there. >> you know, we had a lot of fun out here today, as wayne pointed out in his report. we all pitched in, the on-air team, the behind the scenes team, along with community volunteers, kaboom, the walt disney company, and look what's happening here. we have what will be very soon a new playground that the whole community can use and enjoy and kids can have fun and work and grow and learn to play together. it's going to be fantastic. right now, we need to talk about weather which has been fantastic today. great for working on a playground or doing anything else outdoors. sunny skies, warm conditions across the bay area. we have a few patches of coastal clouds developing. they haven't amounted to much so far. let's take a look at the forecast features because i want you to see what's coming our way as we look down at the embarcadero. we'll see coastal fog in the nights and mornings, mainly sunny in the afternoons ahead.

might be a couple drizzly spots sunday morning, but we don't expect that to amount to much. our satellite loop showing you swirls out to the west that may bring us enough moisture to produce those drizzly features i talked about, but we don't expect significant rainfall from these systems. but they will be present over the weekend. now, the forecast animation beginning at 8:00 saturday evening and continuing overnight shows the clouds pushing slightly inland, also hovering around the bay. along the coastline, i should say. we may see spots of drizzle along the peninsula. otherwise, we'll have a nice dry weekend. overnight, look for low clouds and fog at the coast and locally beyond the coast. we'll see low temperatures ranging from a cooler low to mid-50s in the north bay to upper 50s for most of the bay area, and even low 60s in the inland east bay. antioch's low will be about 61. tomorrow, high temperatures will range as they generally do this time of year from 60s on the

coast to almost 90 inland. we'll see upper 80s in most of the inland locations. far north, we'll have highs in the 90s. right around the bay, mid- to upper 70s. and 64 at half moon bay on the coast. here's our accuweather seven-day forecast. things are looking really good for the seven days ahead. a nice steady pattern of sunny afternoons with low clouds and fog developing overnight. we may see spotty drizzle early sunday morning. with those two swirly messes out to sea, we could have partly cloudy skies lingering into the early part of the day monday, but mostly sunny by the afternoon. high temperatures through tuesday will be meiny 80s. 70 around the bay, 60s along the coast, and warming midweek, wednesday through friday, 90 to 92 degrees in the warmest inland spots. 80 to 82 along the bay, and upper 60s along the coast. lovely week ahead. by the end of the next week, maybe the areas of suement in the playground will be dry, all the equipment will be stabilized

look at this near dallas, texas. an 18-wheeler loaded with lumber caught fire and was dangling precariously. the truck had a blow-out and the driver lost control. it could have been a disaster. glad to tell you the driver is okay. >> freeway is not, though, goodness. >> police in southern california searching for a creative thief who got away with thousands of dollars in gas.
