seen in other state institutions. still, officials told us when it comes to grass, don't let appearances fool you. it's part of what makes the uc berkeley campus special. the acres and acres of lush trees. in the drought, when brown is the new green, it seems lawns are too healthy. >> we've cut back 50% on the irrigation on campus. >> uc berkeley spokesperson tells us the grass is green despite cut backs in campus water usage over six months. one thing, they only water here at night. >> water use on campus is down 5% to 9% since the governor declared the drought official. it's great. we're working hard to reduce our use more. water use in residence alls is down 30%.

frustration in a san jose neighborhood. abc7 news to tell us water had been flowing down more than 24 hours and called the city and the water department. telling us inspectors told them it couldn't be fixed because of leaks in other parts of the city. >> i think it will cave in by that time. there are cracks in the street. the whole, underneath is filled up with water. it's just -- water is busting through. it's going to get worse. >> we have good news tonight after our inquiry. they came out today and fixed that broken pipe. if you see water possibly being wasted, let us look into it. send a video or photograph to abc7 news.com >> a call to improve housing and jobs in san francisco's african american community.

it got heated. anger from residents as the sheriff spoke in a news conference today. community leaders gathered to call on mayor ed lee to stop ignoring the plight of people living in the neighborhoods. >> san francisco is one of the most-liberal cities in our great nation how is it black ask brown people suffer so much? we want to see our kids go to college. not to prisons and not to the cemeteriys. i'm tired of burying our young people. >> residents say they've been dealing with poor housing and unsupportive education systems and high unemployment. >> the san jose neighborhood coming together to try to catch a burglar. they think more than one thief may have been casing this area.

>> tonight an investigation is underway after a mechanic was found crushed to death in oakland. this is the view. police say it happened at charter pro bus company off 880. first responders say co-workers found the man between two buses around noon. >> all lanes of highway 87 are back open tonight after a garbage truck overturned. it happened before noon, blocking lanes of traffic for hours. according to chp, the driver suffered minor injuries. >> governor brown has dispatched experts from office of emergency services and the california national guard to help with the response to hurricanes iselle and julio. they're going to spend four weeks there. live doppler 7 shows julio on her heels, expected to pass north of the islands by

tonight with an oakland project. >> okay. let's take a look at tropical conditions in hawaii now here is our satellite radar. you can see tropical storm iselle now centered 120 miles south of honolulu. moving west rapidly, lashing the chain of islands with heavy rain, gust eye winds and produced up to 14 inches of rainfall. now, we still have a tropical storm warning in effect foremost of the chain of islands with flash flood watch in effect for the big island, just soaked by heavy rains. we can show where julio is now. category 2 hurricane, winds up to 105 miles per hour. and the good news is that storm is expected to pass north of the islands over the weekend and have only a minimal impact on the islands. it's good news.

crowds are gathering for outside lands this weekend. music, food, fun, a field that is san francisco. abc7 news joins us live to explain. hi, jonathan. >> hi there. you can see there are 65,000 people. each day the about half of the people are turning outcoming from out of town and will be getting a taste of san francisco, the food and the fog. musical acts are one of a kind.

100 bands to go. you can see the weather seems to be holding up just fine. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> it's a great line up. u.s. postal service slows outside lands festival the new janis joplin stamp is out. it's designed to look like an album cover. she lived in the area in 1960s. also, san jose jazz summer fest kicks off tonight. this is the grammy-winning pacific mambo orchestra. musicians will play around downtown san jose. organizers say they put together their best yet.

looking from our roof top camera, we'll see coastal fog during the nights and mornings ahead. sunny afternoons and may be drizzly spots sunday morning. a couple weak swirls may push moisture here to bring us some drizzly spots over the weekend. but no significant affect other than that over the weekend. and into sunday morning. shows mainly along peninsula coastline. we'll get back to normal pattern. looking for fog at the coast tonight and perhaps locally beyond the coast. low temperatures mid to upper 50s. milder or warm in the east bay.

look for another sunny, mild to warm day. just a lovely weekend starting with tomorrow. sunny over the bay. high temperatures will range from mid-60s at the coast. certainly no extreme heat this weekend and the accu-weather forecast shows this pattern just continuing into the end of next week. drizzle and systems could produce lingering clouds for monday morning to saturday, through tuesday, highs into upper 80s. 60s on the coast. a little bit of a warm up. low 80s around the bay and upper 60s to near 70s on the coast.

about what really matters many of us had a chance to do something that will stick with us for some time. abc7 employees teams up with our parent company, disney, and a nonprofit called ka boom to build a brand new playground many good people came together to construct a playground and will give children a nice play to play. before i hurt my arm, there is more we can do to lend a land. neighborhoods need a decent playground. it's a drop in the bucket. volunteerism can change the world. imagine what could change if we donated a few hours per month to teach someone to read, deliver food to the elderly.
