>> good sunday morning and thanks for joining us. i'm matt keller in for carolyn tyler. let's start with a first look at your accuweather forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen. hi, lisa. >> hi, matt, good morning to you. plenty of low clouds and fog. marine layer has deep end since you have been sleeping. for some of you, sfo right now, no delays but that probably will change. 59 san carlos, 58 gilroy. the winds out of the southwest transporting the cooler air into our east bay valleys and we will be looking at temperatures today even cooler than yesterday with lower 80s in the inland valleys. plenty of sunshine for you at the coast. and san francisco it will take time. partly sunny skies at best with low to mid-60s and around the bay temperatures in the 70s

for some locations. but upper 60s. so a couple of degrees of cooling for you. we talk about the cooler than normal weather for the next several days, maybe adding in a little bit of rain and perhaps some lightning or thunderstorms. matt. >> thank you, lisa. in developing news, a race car driver has died after hit by a sprint car driven by tony stewart. they say the accident is not criminal in nature and stewart is cooperating with authorities. stewart is a three-time nascar champion. his manager says stewart will still race today in the nascar sprint cup series at watkins international in new york state. >> developing news in vallejo. a man is dead following a hit-and-run accident. it happened on highway 80. a pedestrian was trying to cross the roadway when he was hit by several vehicles. >> the initial vehicle that hit

the pedestrian most likely would be blameless in the accident depending on the circumstances, we don't know yet, but for some reason we don't know yet, they failed to stop and call the police and wait at the scene of the accident. >> police say it's not yet clear if the man who was hit was homeless. the left lane of 80 was closed during the investigation. it has since reopened. chp says they have received a lot of calls about pedestrian crossing the freeway in that area. >> a dramatic scene unfolded in vallejo after a fire truck collided with several cars. seven people were injured. four of them firefighters in the violent collision yesterday evening near main street in sonoma boulevard in vallejo. leslie brinkley has details. >> witnesses say the ladder truck en route to a house fire collided with a car driven which a woman who was on her way to pick up her children. >> the fire truck t-boned her so that after it t-boned her it started rolling down the street. >> barrel rolling?

>> barrel rolling down the street and hit the street light and a fire hydrant. >> the hydrant exploded with water as a light pole toppled and a second car was crushed by the ladder truck at the corner of sonoma and pennsylvania. the front half of the truck twisted on its side. >> all tolled there were four firefighters injured, sustaining serious but nonlife-threatening injuries. they were transported to trauma centers. >> it took almost an hour to extricate one man from the second smashed car. both drivers are expected to survive. a third person was treated and released. >> i'm not willing to speculate if it rolled, barrel rolled, as you said. again, this is a very early stage of the investigation. but we will get to the bottom of how this accident occurred. >> leslie brinkley, abc7 news. this morning a man is in police custody accused of stabbing a man to death in san jose. officers were called to a house

on charter oak place just after 6:00 last night. they found a man stabbed multiple times and a woman slightly injured. the man died at the hospital. police won't say if this is a family situation. >> we are exploring the possibillity that they are related at this point. nothing has been confirmed. we do believe they are known to each other and they are still trial to firm up if they are actually relatives or just known to each other. the suspect was arrested about five blocks from the scene. the names of the victim and the suspect have not been released. a hayward family is searching for their missing son. 25-year-old john cruz has not contacted his family for 11 days. yesterday family and friends passed out flyers hoping someone has seen him. they say he disappeared sometime on july 30th. >> the leads we v been dead ends. >> we haven't heard anything.

we've been passing out flyers all over the bay area hoping that somebody may have seen something. the police are doing what they can. but because this is not a criminal act, there's not a lot that they can do. >> the family says cruz bankcard, cell phone and social media counts haven't been used since he went missing. the u.s. has dropped food and water for a third time to iraqi refugee stranded trying to escape military islamic forces. at the same time he told americans military activity in iraq may not end quickly. here is abc news reporter michelle fransen. >> i don't think we will solve this problem in weeks, i think it will take some time. >> reporter: this problem is an army of radical fighters in northern iraq called isus. they just released this video of themselves. they are leaving a path of death and destruction in their drive to permanently establish an islamic state. now the u.s. military has unleashed its firepower with a barrage of f-18 fighter truck and drone strikes on isus targets. they include a military convoy

headed toward erbi. l where some 150 military advisors are stationed. >> if they threaten our facilities or personnel, we will take action to protect our people. >> but it's not just americans who are in harm's way. right now tens of thousands fleeing religious persecution by isus are trapped on a mountain in northern iraq, fearing certain death. kurdish forces in northern iraq are delivering aid by helicopter to the frightened refugees who are marooned in a desert landscape that below them could soon be under water. the isus has commadered a dam and if the floodwaters are opened, waters could surge all the way to baghdad, swamping even the u.s. embassy there. michelle fransen, abc news, new york. >> american jet fighter and drones conduct more air strikes on islamic militants. abc's martha raditz speaks with

the former commander of u.s. and coalition forces in mosul. they will discuss the u.s. response of to the escalating crisis. you can catch it right here on abc7 at 8:00. developing news out of iran where 39 people have been killed in a passenger plane crash near the capital of terahn. iranian media reports the plane went down after its engine went out. ter takeoff this morning.off this 49 killed, 9 others injured. authorities say the aircraft, an areason 140 jet, is typically used for short domestic flights. hawaii is catching a break. hurricane julio has weakened and is moving north of the island. >> a lot of wind and rain. when the rain stops you have a lot of wind. trees are cracking. >> we have to clear the way. my mom is on oxygen and she's not doing good.

we need to open it up in case i need to call the ambulance. >> yesterday hundreds waited in a line to get drinking water and ice from volunteers at a local police station. >> the outside lands music festival is going strong in san francisco. more than 100 artists are performing on 7 stages at the golden gate park. but the festival is not without problems. at least 35 people have been detained for selling fake tickets. nick smith has the details. >> i thought my neighbors were playing music. >> liz lives in san francisco. it's more than five miles away from the main stage from the outside lands music festival. >> it's surprising we could hear it all the way over here. >> she thinks the sound wall of mount davidson provided the perfect acoustics for music she didn't pay

>> usually we don't hear noises that often but we live in san francisco so it's not surprising we get a little noise now and then. >> this is san francisco's most popular music festival and sells out early. this year has been particularly luring for scalpers and fake ticket purchasers, hoping to cash in on fans wanting a piece of the action. >> i came pretty much prepared. >> these ladies flew in from l.a. so they could hear their favorite bands. >> today local native, tame, which was amazing. >> the three-day music festival continues to be a huge moneymaker for the city and concert promoters, but not everyone is pleased. >> it's pretty, pretty tough looking for parking even when i live here. >> signs are up to notify drivers of the stiff fines and possible towing to not paying attention to where they put their wheels. >> with the concert going on it's pretty bad right now. when i leave, you have to replace it with my other car to save the spot. >> there was a visible presence by the san francisco police department. our cameras captured this man being detained by officers. police declined to tell us why. at golden gate park, nick is smith, abc7 news.

from the sfo camera. causing problems at sfo. 39 minute delays reported now at 6:13:00 in the wildfires continue to burn across the western states. while progress is being made, they say the danger to firefighters is higher than ever. three firefighters are home after battling the large fire in mendocino county. they were air lifted late friday night to u.c. davis medical center. >> the end result of some very extreme fire behavior that was unexpected. all three were transported to a hospital and eventually transported back down here in valley medical center to our regional burn center. >> and now they are home. >> officials say the extreme fire behavior comes from the state's extreme drought. hundreds of firefighters are making progress on a massive wildfire burning in oregon. the fire has grown to 3500 acres since tuesday. one home has been destroyed in

the fire. two more were damaged and more than 700 others remain threatened. fire officials say they are working on burning off any fuel to help contain fire lines. the fire is 55% contained. happening today two runways at san francisco international airport will reopen a month ahead of schedule. runways closed in may. airport officials say they will reopen today rather than mid-september. at the end of the runways workers built buff every zones designed to stop a plane if it overshoots the runway. workers finished safety upgrades on the other two run ways last year. several areas will be fogged in an effort to wipe out any mosquitoes carrying the west nile virus raws. san mateo county mosquito control district will spray the 940250 zip code area monday night. meanwhile parts of santa clara county will be sprayed next week. on tuesday, saratoga in the

area of thelma and beaumont animals sprayed and san jose in the area of thrush and wren drives on thursday. new details on a story reported on last year. -- or last week. fremont area school district has decide today shelf a sex ed textbook. the book "healthcare today" was for ninth grade health classes. but parents said it contained inappropriate description of sexual activities. the school will use last year's books while the district evaluates parents' concerns. in san jose they will clean out a well-known homeless camp tomorrow. encampment, known as the jungle. people plan to protest there today. they say the city's plan to clean the area and put a fence around it will hinder homeless outreach program. they were close, but the boys from pacifica came up-close in their bid to make it to the little league world series. last night in san bernardino, the pacifica american all-stars

lost 11-2 to a team from los angeles. fans got together last night to watch the game from the batting cages where they practiced. spirits were high for the first pitch, but things got glum as the game pro grossed. how often, hometown pride never went by the way side. after the game the giants congratulated the team on twitter. >> i know there are a lot of good teams in the bay area that they beat out to go on. congratulations to them. >> for sure. >> not exactly baseball weather in this area. i guess it is considering it's summer. at the candlestick we would have to bring blankets. >> that was something to complain about maybe. we are starting out with mist and drizzle. that will lift, but it will take a while. the marine layer over 2,000 feet deep. temperatures today with that onshore push and area of low pressure off the coast will be cooler than average. we cooled down yesterday we want to get you updated on the

islands here. the aloha state is still experiencing showers, especially in maui. temperatures in the upper 70s right now. they will get back to their normal weather. the tradewinds coming back. they will be looking at julio moving north and east of the islands. it's still a hurricane. it's a minimal hurricane which is continuing to weaken in the days ahead. thing another day or so still under hurricane strength at 70 miles an hour as it turns into a tropical storm. so we will continue to watch it, but overall it's a cleanup that gets underway. 39 minute delays at sfo. mist and drizzle around the bay. 59 san carlos. good morning san jose. 58 gilroy. and the southwest winds blowing through the delta," allowing temperatures to cool further today into the 80s. how about low to mid-80s on the high end here? at in concord. 56 in napa. so this morning you may need the wipers out there.

certainly damp out there. the marine layer will continue to deepen in the days ahead. it will mix out all together. that will bring us more sunshine. so temperatures aren't going to fall too much further from what we see today. so spotty drizzle this morning. cooler highs. on average of 5 to 7 degrees cooler than normal and the possibility of lightening late tonight into monday. red flag warnings already going up for the western side of the sierra and around the sacramento valley and the delta. so we are looking at tonight into tomorrow where we could see thunderstorms, gusty winds, the lightning strikes and the low relative humidity. this is what we are worried about that will blow into parts of the east bay and the north bay. doesn't look likely but there's a slight chance with the low off the coast, it allows for the possibility of that to be the case in the next 24 hours or so. but really the bigger picture is that it's bringing breezier and cooler conditions. the southerly flow will allow for the north bay to feel more

cooling today. out of the 60s for everyone in marin and sonoma. you know it's not bad in the low 90s there. high sur are of in southern california. menlo park in the low to mid-70s. start out with mist and drizzle. highs today ranging from the low 60s half moon bay. 72 san mateo. notice the north bay, 70s. 73 fremont with low and to mid-80s antioch and livermore. the accuweather seven-day forecast shows temperatures the next several days not budging much. a pacific northwest sky for much of the day area: little change on tuesday. as the marine layer mixes out. slightly cooler wednesday and then we slowly warm things back up. we will let you know how cool or warm it will take my bicycle your community by keeping track of bay area weather on twitter @livedoppler7hd. tons of things going on today. maybe the jacket to start out.

it only clears to parts of the bay and the coast. once again, 60s along the shoreline. partly cloudy skies san francisco. in oakland just about 70 degrees. about 80 again in san jose. cooler in the north bay. in the 90s. well out into our inland valleys. we will talk about how long this cool down is going to stick around in a few minutes. matt. >> thank you, lisa. turning now to the middle east crisis. palestinian negotiators in cairo say they have accepted an egyptian proposal for a new three-day cease-fire with israel. it will clear the way for new negotiations with israel on a long-term truce arrangement in the gaza strip. israel walked away from negotiations over the weekend of a rocket fire resumed, sag it would not negotiate under fire. more than 1900 palestinians and 67 israelis have died in the conflict. ukrainian troops surrounded the city of denette. insurgents say they are willing to accept a cease-fire there in

order to allow humanitarian aid in the area. president said they are prepared to accept aid from russia, but uncertain conditions, including it not be delivered by military troops. >> an update on a story we told but last month. the two families touched by the gift of donor transplantation. both don't march and recipient are doing fine. that was following a two to three-hour surgery. they hope their story will encourage others to become donors. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez met up with both families. >> bill mellard is carrying one of janice's kidneys. the operation was a success. the journey an unlikely one. >> well, before i didn't have much of a life. i really shake a lot. but i'm doing a lot better. >> this was mellard before the surgery. only four weeks later he's look lot healthier. no longer hooked up to a dialysis machine. >> they told him a few years ago

that he wouldn't live to see 40. and here it is, he's 49 and he's still alive. they don't know how. but now he can maybe live until he's 70. >> we monitor his transplant and the function and we do lifelong. but we don't see why he couldn't lead a normal life once again. >> nearly ten years ago his son, calem, suffered an atv accident. the mellards made the hard decision to donate his organs. his pancreas helped save the life of a then 19-year-old petaluma boy named jake. yes, last month mellard received a kidney from jake's mother, janice. this diagram may help you understand it better. after the mellards lost his son, his pancreas was given to jake. janice, his mother, then donated her kidney to bill mellard. more than 200 kidney transplants are performed every year here at california pacific medical center in san francisco.

abc7news.com. in san francisco hundreds of kids in need are now ready for the school year. yesterday the salvation army gave out 2,000 new backpacks stuffed with school supplies. families preregistered with case workers to make sure those who really needed the backpacks got them. this year's distribution was double that of 2013. an indication of how much the need has grown. >> in san mateo, the harley's owners group passed out binders and notebooks and pence and pencils, all donated by the motorcyclists to children of struggling families. and so much in addition to food, crafts, music at outside lands. it's impossible to see everything. but one stop everybody will inevitably make is the porta-potty. michael finney has everything you need to know about the often overlooked, but essential, element of any festival. >> reporter: these are just some of the more than 750 porta-potties awaiting concertgoers this weekend at outside lands.

>> along the coast you will have more dense fog. to begin, 2 1/2 mile visibility half moon bay. economist drizzle for some. we have an area of low pressure that is parked along the coast for the next day or so. we will talk about that in a moment. but here's a look at the hawaiian islands where they are clearing out from the remnants of isselle. you can see it here. there is another hurricane that will miss the islands. this is julio. it is a minimal hurricane. it will continue to weaken as it passes to the north and east. certainly dodging another bullet here where the big islands got the brunt of the heavy weather a couple days ago. and for the next day or so, no threat at all as this travels further to the north and either. here's a look at sfo. about 40-minute delays here with the marine layer, the mist and drizzle from san carlos. san jose at 60 this morning. gilroy 58. half moon bay you have the fog and the taller marine layer making it's way all the way over to our east bay hills. a cloudy start for our friends in the valley with 59 in

concord. napa at 56. the wipers on and off along the coast this morning. and then we will eventually see things mix out. a look at sleepy san jose. our highlights then, some spotty drizzle. and highs the average of anywhere 2 to 7 degrees cooler than average. the possibility monday night into tuesday. it's only a slight possibility. but we have fire watches up around the bay area. and so the possibility of lightning in the higher elevations come monday night into tuesday for our own local mountains. but for right now the red flag warnings from the west side of the sierra nevada. and you can see from the sacramento valley, from the strait and delta we have the watches up and the possibility of lightning strikes. low relative humidity. the ear rattic winds could start some fires. we are look at the pattern for pretty much all summer long with that triggering mechanism. upper level low and the moisture coming into play. but for now the low is allowing for much cooler conditions.

average highs in redwood city, low 80s today in the 70s. san jose is the closest to normal at about 80. you notice below average in san francisco. livermore just in the low 80s. it should be about 89 for this time of year. here's the low. it's going to be parked here for the next day or so. and then as it moves in, we are going to see things mix on out and get sunnier conditions on tuesday. then slowly back to normal. but as for today, breezy and cool. here's a look what we are expecting. you can see the shower activity in the sierra nevada. and then through tomorrow still looking at some activity in the southern syria. highs today average of 80 with afternoon thunderstorms possible in the mountains. 95 chico. it is cooler for you. still the heat out of the bay. and the men low charity horse show today, temperatures will be slowly climbing into the lower 70s. we will look for highs ranging
