good morning. i'm michelle franzen. >> and i'm devin dwyer. it's great to have you with us. we begin with the death of a hollywood legend, actor and comedian robin williams, of course, found dead in his home north of san francisco apparently from suicide caused by asphyxia. >> he delighted millions with a career that spanned nearly 40 years, but, unfortunately, that legacy of laughs apparently hit a very painful personal battle. abc's tahman bradley leads off our coverage. >> reporter: overnight hollywood mourned the loss of legendary actor robin williams. from the iconic comedy club, the laugh factory, to the hollywood walk of fame to the premiere of "expendables 3," shock and sadness spread. >> we are mourning the loss of such a great man. you know, he was such a fantastic actor. >> he was a unique guy. you know, he was just a force of nature. >> reporter: the academy award winner died monday at his home in northern california. authorities suspect the 63-year-old took his own life. williams' representative said

the actor had been battling severe depression of late. online fans, celebrities and williams' family grieved. "i love you, i miss you, i'll try to keep looking up," his daughter zelda tweeted. even president obama weighed in. "he was one of a kind. he arrived in our lives as an alien but he ended up touching every element of the human spir spirit." the president was referring to his work as an oddball alien in the '80s television classic "mork & mindy." >> be free. you must revolt against your oppressors. you have nothing to lose but your shells. >> reporter: "entertainment weekly" once called williams the funniest man alive, but many of the juilliard trained actor's roles were mixed with warmth and wit. "good morning, vietnam," "dead poets society," "mrs. doubtfire" and "good will hunting" for which he won his oscar. >> i thought about what you said to me the other day about my painting. >> reporter: an autopsy is scheduled for today, and the coroner will hold a news conference. tahman bradley, abc news, washington.

we've been hearing in recent years about williams' battle with addiction. >> that's right. eight years ago back in 2006, he sat down with our own diane sawyer and opened up to her about the darkness of his struggle with addiction, but, as always, he showed a glimmer of hope. >> people say how do you feel? with my fingers. how does it -- don't drink. what are you doing to stay that way? don't drink. >> it was just alcohol? >> just alcohol. that's enough really. >> yeah. >> that's all. >> so to talk about it as caused by something -- >> it's not caused by anything. it's just there. it's just, you know, latent. it waits. humiliations give you humility literally. >> was there something somebody said to you, one sentence that got through that sailed through? >> you're a drunk. no, it's like it got through to me saying you need help, and that's the best sentence that got through. >> are you yourself when you -- >> no, that's another side of yourself that you don't know. dr. jekyll/mr. jack daniels. there is another person who appears. >> is there a sadness about these past two years then?

>> yeah, there's a sadness and then you have to go -- then there's also hope. sadness is always like, yeah, you wish they hadn't happened but they did, and the purpose is to make you different. it's that idea of you're back, and you realize the thing that matters are others way beyond yourself. >> and we know williams was back at a treatment facility as recently as last month, but we don't know yet whether any substances played a role. the toxicology tests will be due out here after the autopsy in several more weeks. >> and also williams was set to star in the sequel of "mrs. doubtfire." that is doubtful, though. that's reportedly likely to be cancelled. >> that's right. and stay with abc news for the latest on the death of robin williams later on "good morning america." how celebrities reacted overnight and on twitter. so much more coming up later. and abc news will have an hour-long tribute to williams on a special edition of "20/20." that's tonight at 10:00 eastern. the other major story we're following this morning is the growing unrest near st. louis,

missouri, after the shooting of that unarmed teenager by police. officers in riot gear used tear gas and rubber bullets to break up a crowd of protesters late last night in ferguson. mother of the william, michael brown, says she's devastated by her son's death but also hoping for peace in the city. >> i'm going through something i can't even explain to you. something i can't even describe to you. they took my son from me. they just took my son from me. >> details of what led to the shooting are still not clear. the fbi has launched its own review of the incident. now to another major story this morning. the latest on the political showdown in iraq. the current prime minister, nuri al maliki, says he's going to hold on to the job despite the fact that another politician has been chosen to be the next leader. the selection of hader al abadi as the new prime minister has the backing of the white house. >> earlier today vice president

biden and i called dr. abadi to congratulate him and to urge him to form a new cabinet as quickly as possible. >> as for the battle against those islamic militants, the pentagon says u.s. air strikes have slowed isis down, but they're unlikely to affect the militants' overall capabilities or operations. fire crews in the northwest are battling more than two dozen wildfires this morning. more thunderstorms in the region today have raised concerns about new fires. lightning was the spark for many of the blazes in washington, oregon, northern california and idaho. most of those are in state or national forests or heavily wooded land. meanwhile, flood warnings are in effect this morning for the detroit area until at least daybreak. a storm late yesterday dumped more than 5 inches of rain in just a few hours. the average for the entire month of august, only 3 inches of rain. riders in a city bus, you see it there, terrified as it filled up with floodwater. drivers across the area were stranded in their cars.

with addiction, and his agent now says the 63-year-old had been battling severe depression. this morning, even those close to williams and his struggles are stunned. >> he went through as crazy as we're surprised he lived this long, you know, all the craziness he did in the '80s, but after he got to be in his 50s and 60s, we figured he was over the hump and we'd have him for many years. >> the preliminary cause of death is suicide by asphyxia. an autopsy will be performed later today. >> and abc news will have much more on the passing of robin williams. later this morning, a special edition of "good morning america." some new details in the investigation of the racetrack tragedy involving tony stewart. an autopsy has found the 20-year-old driver kevin ward jr. died of blunt force trauma after being struck by stuart's car. investigators are now analyzing a second video of the incident taken from a different angle

than we've seen before. police maintain they have found no criminal conduct, and they have no plans to interview stewart for a third time. ward's funeral is set for thursday. a major medical headline this morning. the fda has approved a gene test to screen for colon cancer. it's called cologuard. the test detected 92% of colon cancers in a study of 10,000 patients. a colonoscopy is the best procedure. but many avoid the invasive procedure. colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the u.s. a close call for a child in the london subway system. a baby stroller is left parked against a wall, and a gust of wind in the tunnel apparently blows the stroller onto the tracks with the baby inside it. then a woman leaps down and saves the child. it is not known, though, if she is the child's mother. and check this out. a dirt bike racer in southern
