yesterday, suffering from severe depression. good afternoon. i'm larry deal. >> and i'm sharon jennings. a growing memorial at his star on the hollywood walk of fame. the you can see candles, flowers and mementos surrounding it. fans are stopping by in tribute to a man considered a comic genius. >> at 8:30 tonight, the tcl chinese theater on hollywood theater will dim its forecourt lights for one minute to honor robin williams. >> we have live team coverage on the life and death of robin williams. >> we begin with abc 7 reporter wayne freedman live in marin county with what we learned today from investigators, wayne. that news conference was kind of gruesome in detail. >> reporter: it was, larry. robin williams' death isn't just a national and world story, it's a bay area story. this is where he grew up. this is where he went to high school. behind me at college of marin is where he first appeared on a stage. but today was a strange mixture

of warm memories and cold hard facts from the investigation. >> the preliminary cause of death is asphyxia due to hanging. >> reporter: in marin county today, the sheriff's department says it is handling robin williams' death like any other examination, but clearly it's more than that. reporters from around the world listened to every small detail. williams' wife had gone to sleep alone at 10:30 p.m. in a different room. she had left the next morning without awakening him. just before noon, the actor's personal assistant became worried about him when he did not respond to a doorknock. >> at this time, the personal assistant was able to gain access to mr. williams' bedroom and entered the bedroom to find mr. william clothed in a seated position, unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck with the other end of the belt wedged between the closed closet door and the door frame. his right shoulder area was touching the door with his body perpendicular to the door and slightly suspended.

>> reporter: it is hardly the end in anyone would have predicted for an actor and comedian who touched so many people. james dunn taught williams. he said the williams he knew seemed exactly the opposite. thinking was a very, very kind, sweet man. who never said a bad word about anybody, and i never heard anybody ever say a bad word about him. >> reporter: that was in the early 1970, before "mork & mindy," before the oscar, before fame. the kid from tiburon wanted to be an actor. he succeeded at that. >> they believe he will go down in history as a major artist like charlie chaplain. he'll be remembered as well as chaplin. >> reporter: at one point, i asked james dunn what he thought it was that made robin williams so special. what did he have? the answer he said, quote, intelligence, a fertile mind. meantime, the sheriff's office wants to stress that the investigation and these results

remain preliminary. a final answer will take several weeks pending a toxicology report. live in marin county, wayne friedm friedman, abc 7 news. our coverage continues from the mrs. doubt firehouse in san francisco. >> 2640 steiner street. that is of course where "mrs. doubtfire" was filmed. as you can imagine, it's been nonstop fans all day. we noticed a lot of vacationers from all over the world stop by here as well. of course, a lot of local people. this house has, if you will, become sort of a shrine to the memory of robin williams. the floral memorial just keeps getting bigger and bigger. this home is now on the other hand by douglas. he is no hurry to remove this extemporaneous tribute. >> i'm not about to change anything. it's all deserved, isn't it? >> reporter: and they're coming

from all over the world. >> the only mistake i didn't make is to put a bucket out front with a nickel for every picture. i would have retired years ago instead of this friday. >> reporter: to many of his fans, this home will forever inextricably be linked to robin williams. >> i felt i needed to come by here. "mrs. doubtfire was a big movie for me. it was my childhood. >> it's cool that his memory will live on in this house and in other places and with his movies and stuff. >> reporter: "mrs. doubtfire" was shot here in the early 1990s. williams played a husband who disguised himself as a nanny to win back his wife who wanted a divorce because she felt he was irresponsible. >> he was always trying to be happy. always trying to smile and make other people happy. that's what i remember best of all about his movies. >> reporter: that's what everyone remembers about robin williams. few knew just how hard he fought his demons. >> he always seemed so happy.

and he was so upbeat. and just to hear that he suffered depression is just so sad. it's hard to believe. >> reporter: hard to believe, as someone said, that deep down inside he was really a sad clown. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> robin williams was a big supporter of glide memorial. this is the actor attending one of the charity fundraisers in which he took the stage with bill cosby. robin williams bonded with the people at glide in a special way. he also talked openly to them about his own problems with drug addiction. >> when robin would see some of the people here at glide, he would immediately have empathy for him and they with him, because they understood there was something going on that was beyond any of us. and yet it was a compassion act. >> robin williams began donating his time and money to glide memorial church over 30 years ago. he even donated these

autographed objects for a fundraising auction. he helped project open hand in a big way in the late 1990s. that organization was about to lose $750,000 in funding to retrofit its building, and that's when the comedian step in. >> coming down to the 11th hour, we were about $50,000 short. and robin and his wife stipulated and made that gift. so we were able to meet that goal. and as a result, what we're doing here today in this building, 2500 meals going out to people who are critically ill and also to seniors in the bay area. that's part of his legacy. >> well, the williams family has not yet announced funeral arrangements or whether there will be a public memorial in the bay area. >> for her part, congresswoman nancy pelosi wants more done to help so many people like robin williams who are suffering from mental illness. >> when people say he took his life, i say, no he died of an illness. you know, he had challenges that were an illness.

but sometimes something so high profile and so heartbreaking can give us a boost to do even more. >> pelosi said she worked hard for the mental health parity act in 1996 which will require that mental health benefits have the same coverage of medical and surgical benefits. >> robin williams' death outside of his fame is not that unusual, unfortunately, because it's so prevalent. the problem of depression. >> according to the centers for disease control, more people in the u.s. die by suicide every year than in car accidents. it's a shocking fact. >> abc 7 news reporter laura anthony talked with one east bay mother who lost her adult daughter to suicide. a case with some eerie similarities to robin williams. >> my daughter jenny died by suicide in 2008. >> reporter: teresa ferguson knows well what the family of robin williams is going through. she lost her 31-year-old daughter, jeanni clacker to suicide sex years ago. the method, hanging.

>> eventually, she just -- she gave up hope that she was ever going to be able to get better. and in fact one of the final things she said was i don't think i can ever have kids. and so how can i get married knowing that i can never have kids because i can't take care of myself. >> reporter: since jenny's death, ferguson has devoted much of her energy to an organization called out of the darkness, a national foundation dedicated to suicide prevention. knowing the star battled depression, ferguson recently tried to contact williams' publicist to see if he might speak at their october march in oakland. ferguson strongly believed the biggest key to battling depression is to erase the stigma there. >> are still many, many people who won't even admit that their child died by suicide. there is something wrong with that, you know. we have to -- we have to get to the point where we see this as an illness, a disease that needs to be treated. >> reporter: like williams, ferguson says it appeared her daughter had everything to live for. a successful career and at the

covering walnut career, burlingame, campbell, and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> well, how big a difference does a couple of seconds make? plenty. just ask these pedestrians in manchester, england. look out here that was a mini coop they're would have wiped them out. it hit in the front of the building, almost hitting those two. the car smashed into the front of the hopwood hall college on saturday. they're still unsure of exactly why this happened. the 21-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with head injuries but is expected to survive. they're quite fortunate. >> wow. take a look at this mess. this forced a closure of all westbound lanes across the san mateo bridge for about four hours today. two big rigs collided on highway 92 near foster city boulevard. dry cement and diesel fuel spilled from one of the trucks just before 9:00 this morning, and drivers had to inch through

traffic for several miles, beginning in hayward. the chp diverted others from westbound 2. that's right before the toll plaza. take a look at this backup. westbound 92 reopened about 1:00 this afternoon. and taking a live look at it right now, it looks as though it is moving a whole lot better than it did earlier today. and that's a relief for anybody who has to cross the san mateo bridge this afternoon. >> a lot of that traffic headed for the san mateo bridge ended up on the bay bridge. >> you got stuck in that. >> i got stuck in that. i can testify to the problems there this afternoon. all right. moving on. an update now on an issue the i-team first broke and has been following for more than a year. now lawmakers today announced a new effort to eliminate the backlog of untested rape kits in the bay area. san jose congressman mike honda says about $41 million has been earmarked to help complete the testing nationwide. these kits in connection with criminal cases. there are half million untested kits in the u.s. including 2,000 in alameda county. the funding still needs final

approval. the i-team first reported on this issue in may of 2013. since then a state bill has been introduced to expedite the processing of the kits. the aids memorial in san francisco park has been vandalized. five trees or tree ferns, a park fence were all damaged. a rec and parks spokesperson believes that it may be the same person who vandalized a memorial back in march. no arrests made at this point. well, mandatory water rationing is now on tap in the east bay, but the new limits are not across the board. >> water users will face restrictions on outside use. abc 7 reporter joining us from neptune park in alameda with more on today's move and what it means. nick? >> reporter: absolutely, larry, cheryl, you know alameda started their water restrictions in january. that's why this tree is in desperate need of water and the leaves have turned brown. also is the reason why this park

is a dry, brittle mess, and everything in it is just blowing away. >> in january, the city manager mandated a 20% water reduction. >> reporter: alameda city leaders saw what the drought was doing and took action early on by implementing water conservation. eight months of tough action have left their city parks looking like this. >> we've actually lost a few trees here and there. but that's -- that's the price you're going to pay. >> reporter: but elsewhere in the east bay, users haven't been as conservative, either neglecting cutback on water usage or ignoring the call to serve all together. today the east bay water municipal's board took action. >> is going to declare water shortage emergency and enact mandatory outdoor watering restrictions for all of its customers. >> that means tougher rules on when, where and how the water district's 1.3 million customers can use water.

>> i water on wednesdays and saturdays, what is it? is it five minutes? is it half an hour? >> reporter: anticipating that there may be confusion, the water agency has placed the conservation guidelines on its website and introduced a new page to report water abuse issues, insisting that the goal is not to punish customers, but rather to educate them. alana ellis has gotten the message. her neighbors have nothing to show for lawn but weeds, and it has been nearly three months since her car has had a bath. and when she washes it, she is sure to use the hose with the shutoff valve to reduce waste. >> try to think about it as help as much as i can. >> reporter: the state has asked that the mandatory water restrictions remain in effect until next april. john says he thinks alameda has set an example for others to follow. >> we can do it, anybody can do it. >> reporter: nick smith, abc 7 news. >> take a look at unusual weather in tahoe.

gate. clouds move. and these are our forecast futures. mostly sunny and mild tomorrow. and a warmer pattern begins on thursday. satellite radar composite image shows high clouds pushing into the bay area ahead of an advancing frontal system. and those clouds will continue moving through overnight. here is our forecast animation starting at 7:00 this evening. once the high clouds push through, they'll be followed by low clouds. but we'll have a brighter day with low clouds mainly sticking around the coastline. sunny skies over the bay and inland areas tomorrow. for the week ahead, san jose, our indicator of the high temperature pattern will see temperatures bouncing back up to right around average by thursday, and staying in a rather stable and steady uniform pattern through next tuesday. here is a look at our overnight lows. mainly upper 50s to around 60. so pretty much the pattern we've had the last couple of weeks or so during our overnight hours. then tomorrow a mostly sunny day with a few low clouds near the

in woodside is among those mourning the loss of robin williams. the foundation said robin williams and coco the gorilla shared a special bond. the two met for a video shoot in 2001. coco's handler said at the time this was taped, she had not smiled in six months because her life-long partner had passed away. well, a few minutes with robin williams, and guess what happens? he is laughing and then she -- well, i guess as a gorilla, but the two joked and they were kind of wrestling and tickling one another. the foundation said coco was somber today after her handlers explained she had lost a good friend. couldn't they have not told coco? it made the gorilla sachld. it's not like she going to go on the internet and read it. >> she is very smart. >> but it's always nice to learn more about the gorilla foundation. >> that's true. >> you know, we had talked about

who would often ride his bike until the neighborhood. >> curt hawkins joins us in hollywood with how fans there are remembering robin williams. kirk? >> reporter: well, larry and cheryl, right now as you can see behind me, the memorial is growing, and so are the cloudro hundreds of fans stopping by to pay their final respects. new details have been released into the death of beloved actor and comedian robin williams. the coroner's office confirming earlier suspicions that williams committed suicide. >> that mr. williams' life ended from asphyxia due to hanging. >> reporter: the 63-year-old actor was found by his assistant in a seated position with a belt tied around his net and attached to a door. he also had cuts on his left wrist. williams was already cold to the touch. williams' life had last seen him sunday night when she went to bed. she left monday morning thinking he was asleep.

incredible video of their badly damaged boat in the pacific. this is about 400 miles north of oahu. the sailor spent 24 hours stranded in battered seas. those conditions caused their vessel's mast to break from the hull. >> i was sitting in the galley, reading a book. and all the stuff on the shelf, on the starboard side just came off and flew into me. >> water-filled up my quarters. i got flipped over. and i thought initially that that was it. >> a matson cargo ship rescued them and brought them to honolulu. all three escaped uninjured. they had been sailing to thailand. former microsoft steve ballmer officially took over today as the new owner of the los angeles clippers. ballmer replaces donald sterling. the nba banned sterling for life after a recording of him making racist comments surfaced in april. a court then gave sterling's estranged wife shelly the

well, this was a rarity. triplet pandas born in china in the country's artificial breeding program. the three were born july 29th. breeders delayed the announcement, though, because they weren't sure all three would survive. they're still pink, mostly hairless and in an incubator. they have yet to be known. the triplets are only the fourth known to be born in the world. kind of cute there only the fourth known to be born in the world through the breeding program. >> they're so tiny. >> for now. he may be new on the job,

but a rookie kansas city police officer made an immediate impact on some local kids. >> the kids were dancing on a street corner when officer james crabbe joined in with his version of the octopus dance. this he goes. he traded turns and then pulled out his best move of the day, okay, there he goes. we don't know what he calls this. but he was able to actually get up on his own. >> well, he is only 26. >> the officer admitted he couldn't even believe what he was doing while he was doing it. but there was a method to his dance madness. >> went through the academy. and when i first got hired on, i told them how i wanted to interact with the community and start building some rapport with the citizens. i feel like if we build rapport with them, they're more likely to call us when they need us. >> the kids certainly enjoyed their time with the officer. one girl said he was pretty funny and liked that he was showing them that even the cops could be cool. >> really nice. fun video there. spencer christian outside. he's got some moves. i saw you with that hula hoop at the playground the other day.

among the seven, the top seller was an instant stream of "dead poets society." the most popular dvd was a behind the scenes edition of "mrs. doubtfire." fans also snapped up dvds of "good will hunting," "patch adams" and "good morning vietnam." amazon quickly ran out of the physical dvds. the site listed them as temporarily out of stock. so expect them to be replenished fairly soon. there was a big bust today of a global counterfeiting ring. officials say it has been operating for 15 years. the u.s. secret service tells us sophisticated copies of $100 bills have been flooding the country from israel. the crook sold fake bills to other criminals for 40 cents on the dollar. those were passed to unsuspecting victims. the secret service says the plot was uncovered when more bills were set to be printed in new jersey. you can buy just about anything a walmart, shoes, groceries, television sets. now you can add a doctor to that list.

>> thanks for joining us. i'm cheryl jennings. >> and i'm dan ashley. new details released today by investigators about the death of robin williams. some of it very tough to hear. williams' body was found at his home in tiburon by a personal assistant. >> at that time the personal assistant was able to gain access to mr. williams' bedroom and entered the bedroom to find mr. williams clothed in a seated position, unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck with the other end of the belt wedged between the closed closet door and the door frame. >> the sheriff's department says robin williams also had superficial cuts to the left wrist. he was being treated for depression. it's not clear whether drugs were involved. >> toxicology test willing be conducted to determine if mr. williams had any chemical substances in his system at the time of his death. the final cause and manner of death will not be certified until the conclusion of the investigation, which is several weeks away.
