>> reporter: about once a week, robin williams liked to eat at this little thai restaurant in sausalito. the business, like so many in the bay area, proud to hang a picture of the academy award-winning actor on the wall. >> a really, really nice guy. >> reporter: williams' death feels personal to many in the day bay area. he supported many charity. he was long-time donor and volunteer at the san francisco zoo where a howler monkey was just named after him in june. he was a kid at heart. robin a toy store collected robots and rare action figures. >> he is very sincere. i mean, he is very humble. and then he shook hands and talk to a customer like just average person, you know. so no ego. very nice. everybody loved him. >> reporter: williams was also an avid bike rider. staff at sunshine bicycle center in fairfax say a short exchange often turned into their own

private stand-up routine. >> me personally because i'm from scotland, he heard my scottish accent and immediately likes going to that and he is talking in a scottish accent himself and cracking all these jokes about scotland. he had everyone laughing. >> we saw the gift. he had the gift of laughter. >> reporter: rory worked with williams on many of his san francisco-based films. his favorite memory after a hard week working on "bicentennial" man breaking his ribs in laughter, acting as a air traffic controller for pigeon squs in the park. >> he had a voice and a name for every bird. and i will cher they're all my days. >> reporter: he says he was extremely funny but never stopped being professional, humble and kind. elisa harrington, abc 7 news. >> so many great stories we're hearing now. a child member of the cast of "patch adams" will never forget

the way robin williams made her laugh during a health crisis. >> david louie joins us where that child is all grown up and living and working in the fashion industry. david? >> reporter: that's right, cheryl and dan. this young girl lives here in this neighborhood in san jose, the willow glen district. now of course williams played the lead role in patch adams about an unconventional doctor who treated cancer patients with laughter. well, this young lady did not have to act being a cancer patient because she was one. >> hi. >> hi. >> what's your name? >> cammie. >> reporter: that 7-year-old's real name is cameron, and she was not acting. she was battling cancer in real life, like the other children in the ward. today at age 22, cameron brook stanley is cancer-free. she remember house robin williams cared deeply about the kids in the cast. >> he was such a real person. so when even off the set, when

we weren't -- when we weren't filming, he was just trying to hang out with the kids, and trying to make us forget that we were sick. >> reporter: cameron was undergoing both chemotherapy and radiation for a tumor on her kidney. williams gave her a nickname, little buddha because of her bald head. >> he didn't really act like this big star. he just acted like one of us. i mean, he even during lunch time, we would all be sitting out on a table outside, and he would run over. hey, did you try the lemonade? oh, my gosh, it's so good. >> reporter: cameron has keepsake photos of the patch adams shoot in an album, including this one with williams with the 12 children cast members. she said there was a real chemistry between them. >> we both loved to laugh. we both loved to tell jokes. and that's what our friendship was is just laughs and we worked really well together. just an amazing man. >> reporter: cameron was first

cast as an extra, but ended up as a principle with a speak role. she is convinced williams helped her through a challenging period in her life. today she is a fashion designer of crystal clutch bags and robin williams' living legacy is teaching her the value of laughter. >> definitely laughter is the best medicine. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. >> robin williams certainly could deliver that medicine better than anyone else. well, the death of robin williams is being felt in a very deep way at glide memorial in san francisco. >> he headlined several fundraising events for gliechltd his relationship with the charitable organization goes back 30 years. >> at one point he even took the stage for over two hours with fellow comedian bill cosby. >> and it was just dynamic and sensitive and laughing and people rejoicing, and people clapping. it was like one of the most important events in their lives. >> the reverend cecil williams showed abc 7 news some

autographed items. >> he says it connected in a special with people at glide who are battling drug addiction and mental illness. >> abc 7 former entertainment reporter don sanchez is also remembering robin williams. >> he is, as so many are. particularly running into williams on the red carpet at the 2007 san francisco international film festival. >> he is coming in, and we're standing there, and we're all waiting to get him. and he is walking in with george lucas. and he looks at me. been on television a few years. so he knew me. we had talked before. and he said oh, look, there is don -- -- and he is doing this whole number on making up my last name. he spelled it everywhere possible. zecness is my name spelled backward. we had to come over and chat with he and george lucas. a a funny moment. >> absolutely. well, the san francisco film society made reference to that event and its remembrance of

williams on its facebook page. >> quote, we remember robin fondly as our 2007 peter j. owens award recipient at the 50th san francisco international film festival. he had a full house and pure law enforcementer in his onstage interview. may he rest in peace. well, experts at the national suicide prevention lifeline say they are receiving more calls than usual, and they say robin williams' death is one of the reasons. >> laura anthony spoke with one local mother who lost her adult daughter to suicide, a case with eerie similarities in fact to williams. >> she was, like i said, very accomplished and very high energy. >> reporter: teresa ferguson knows well what the family of robin williams is going through. she lost her 31-year-old daughter, jeanni to suicide six years ago. the method, hanging. >> eventually she just gave up hope that she was ever going to be able to get better. and in fact, one of the final things she said was i don't think i can ever have kids.

and so how can i get married knowing that i can never have kids, because i can't take care of myself. >> reporter: since jeanni's death, she has devoted much of her energy to out of the darkness, a national foundation dedicated to suicide prevention. knowing the star battled depression, ferguson recently tried to contact williams' publicist to see if he might speak at their october march in oakland. >> this just happened yesterday. i've already had a number of patients that hatalked about it today. >> reporter: williams' suicide has prompted some patients to talk about things they might not have otherwise. >> about how upset it was and it's led to a discussion about suicide and their safety. it raises people's awareness that this is an illness. that it's a serious illness, that we have to take it seriously. and that is there treatment available. there. >> are still many, many people who won't even admit that their child died by suicide. there is something wrong with that, you know.

williams owned season tickets, and sometimes he could be spotted greeting the players outside the clubhouse before and after games. big baseball fan. and we do know that the williams family has not yet announced plans for a funeral or a public memorial. >> but they did release this picture on their facebook page that we would like to share with you. it reads we are grateful for the heartfelt outpouring of support for our beloved robin williams from friends and fans around the world. >> your kind words are a great comfort in this time of great sorrow. well love you, robin. rest in peace. >> we have also just learned about the death of another hollywood icon tonight. >> tmz reported just moments ago that actress lauren bacall died today. the website reports she had a massive stroke this morning. >> bacall starred in dozens of movies including "dark passage" which was shot in san francisco. bacall earned a golden globe and an oscar nomination. >> she also won two tony awards. lauren bacall was 89 years old. well, we'll move on there is much more ahead this tuesday evening.

westbound 92 near foster city boulevard just before 9:00 this morning. crews then spent the next four hours cleaning up the mess. all lanes reopened about 1:15 this afternoon. a water shortage emergency in the east bay tonight where new mandatory water restrictions went into effect just a few hours ago. outside water use restrictions are in place for all 1.3 million east bay mud customers. those restrictions include watering lawns a maximum of twice a week and using only hoses with shuttle-off hoses to wash vehicles. in january, a city manager mandated a 20% reduction in use by the city. crews continue to water playing field, but sempl parks are now just dried out. >> we're an older city. so we have older irrigation systems and things like that. and if we can do it, anybody can do it. >> east bay mud has listed the new water restrictions on its website. we have a link at abc7news.com. miss are looking for a vandal who did more than $25,000

damage to the national aids memorial grove in golden gate park. some time friday night, somebody cut off tree limbs, smashed flower planters and damaged fencing. this is the fifth or sixth time the grove has been targeted just this year. a recreation and parks department spokesperson says the damage is consistent. so it's possible the same person is doing it. >> the most recent incident in the aid memorial grove is particularly devastating. it's such a peaceful place. and to see trees chopped down and benches smashed is really upsetting for people. >> the ten-acre memorial site is privately funded and maintained by volunteers. california wants to get back in the running to land tesla's new battery plant, and it appears governor brown is willing to bend some rules to make that happen. the palo alto-based automaker just chose arizona, nevada, new mexico, and texas as potential factory sites. the l.a. times reports that

governor brown is offering an incentive package for tesla. part of it would include waiving certain parts of the california environmental quality act. well, ultra hd is the hot new tech trend for televisions. it promises an even more perfect picture. >> but it is worth the extra cash? consumer reports is partnering exclusively with 7 on your side to find out. >> reporter: is your flat screen tv big enough? is it sharp enough, dan? >> is that even possible? >> reporter: there you go. the manufacturers are really promoting these ultra high definition, also called ultra hd and uhd. it takes picture detail to the next level. should you buy an ultra high def tv? consumer reports tested some of the very latest sets. you can't miss the ultra high definition television on display at this store. but you might wonder what sets them apart from other high definition tvs. consumer reports have tested

several 50 to 60-inch uhd sets from big names like samsung, sony and panasonic. television expert jim wilcox says ultra high definition tv has a lot to offer. >> ultra hdtvs has four times the number of pixels as regular high definition. so they're capable of razor sharp detail. especially if you stand up close. >> reporter: but here is the rub. from further away, say the distance you might be sitting in your living room, the difference between ultra high def and high def can be difficult to detect. another issue, what to watch. >> right now there is not a lot of content to watch. so that means you'll be watching a lot of regular hd content on your ultra hdtv. >> reporter: how does that look? actually, quite good testers say because the ultra high def sets can upconvert regular programs to the higher resolution, making details look smoother. how well a tv performs this subconversion process is one of the things that differentiates sets. so should you buy an ultra high definition tv?

behind me. just a gentle breeze. and then a little bit of a breeze. the clouds have been hanging around most of the day. and temperatures inland have been running cooler than average. let me show you live doppler 7 hd. we'll talk about when things might return to normal around here. as you take a look, a lot of cloud cover, especially in the north bay. some along the coast. but we are seeing some clearing along some parts of the coast from san francisco down towards the san mateo county area. that's going to be brief. as you look from our south beach camera, plenty of clouds. a little bit of peek-a-boo sun. it's in the 70s oakland, san carlos, san jose. gilroy, 83 degrees. of course with sutro towercam remarks can't see anything because low clouds have taken over. low 70s right now santa rosa, napa. 81 in fairfield. 77 in livermore here is my beautiful view from our kgo roof camera. just seeing some high, thin wispy clouds. mostly sunny and mild afternoon expected tomorrow. and we are looking at a warmer pattern to begin on thursday.

but it's just going to be a minor warm-up thursday and friday. here is what has kept us cooler than average. a trough off the coast. that's also sending high clouds our way. we're not getting any rain out of it. what you will see is more cloudiness overnight tonight. low clouds as well. i know some kids are already back to school at 8:00 a.m. there might be some spotty drizzle around. it could slow you down. brighter for tomorrow afternoon away from the coast, of course. the temperatures will be about the same as today. we will start to see some recovery below average tomorrow in san jose at 79. average high is 82. we start to bounce back up into the low 80s, which is seasonal for this time of year later on in the week. excuse me. mid-50s to low 60s tomorrow morning. we will see a lot of cloud cover around, and there could be, like i said, some patchy morning drizzle for the afternoon looking at mid-80s around fairfield, antioch. 79 in san jose. 72 oakland.

caught what would have been a home run from mark reynolds. he back flipped over the railing. he said it wasn't that hard to do. he said he just had to call on his years playing softball because he played for 31 years that was a nice catch. >> nice snag. three federal judges heard pleas today to allow the oakland a's to move to san jose despite the opposition of major league baseball. san jose would like to lure the a's to a site near hb pavilion. the san francisco giants own baseball's territorial rights to santa clara county. and san jose's attorneys argue that violates federal antitrust laws during a hearing before the ninth court of appeals in san francisco. baseball is exempt from federal antitrust laws because of a court decision in the 1920s. >> the antitrust exemption they have does not apply to relocation of teams. it can't. that's an antitrust violation. >> what the supreme court has said is that if anybody is going to change that, it should be congress. they have better mechanisms to

change it. >> the matter could eventually be decided by the u.s. supreme court. the a's just signed a ten-year deal to remain in oakland, but it does not include an escape clause. an extremely powerful telescope is giving us a rare view of a black hole. here is the image nasa has drawn up to allow us to see what their data shows. it looks like something out of a science movie. it shows the intense gravity of a black whole pulling x-ray light down. scientists say they have never seen it happen to this degree and in such detail. that black hole you see is about 324 million light years from earth. that. >> is staggering. >> wow. well, coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00, we're going to continue our coverage on the life and legacy of robin williams with the impact one movie had on one house in the san francisco neighborhood. and the future of san francisco's largest sewer plant.
