live from the kg-tv news center, this is abc 7 news. good afternoon, everybody. i'm larry diehl. >> and i'm ama daetz. >> hartman was sentenced today after admitting that see violated her probation. los angeles airport police arrested hartman when she showed up at l.a.x. last week without a valid ticket after a judge ordered her to stay away. it all began when hartman stowed away on a flight from san jose to l.a. a few days early ierier. she was first placed on probation for sneaking past security and then violating a stay away order there.

a judge also ordered hartman to get a mental health exam. >> concerns over that breach and another over the past four months is leading to a call for a public hearing to pinpoint exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. >> david louie covered both incidents. he's live at the airport. david, the airport director spoke for the first time about the problems today. >> reporter: and it's very significant to be talking to the airport director. all previous requests to talk to her have been turned down. now we just got word from city hall that september 25th is the date for this public hearing. they intend to look at everything under the magnifying glass from police staffing to tsa security to perfect i am it ter security all in an effort to prevent another serious breach. they passed muster but two breaches occurred. a team stowaway hid in the wheel whel of a jetliner and survived a flight to hawaii and then last week a 62-year-old woman boarded a flight to l.a. without a ticket without being stopped by

tsa or barred from boarding by the airline. two san jose councilmembers want a public hearing to tighten security. >> we know that terrorists will often spend months planning and testing and casing before they do things. if we have weaknesses, i would rather we find them and we correct them and we protect the public versus wait iing for a b situation to happen. >> reporter: however, san jose airport's director says some security measures can't be disclosed in a public forum. >> there are things that occurred at the airport we are not permitted to disclose fully. what i do believe is the public needs to understand what happens at the airport, the security at the airport, and have the ability to feel comfortable. >> reporter: the number of san jose police officers assigned to the airport has dropped significantly due to budget constraints from 41 is in 2010 to 19 officers today. two officers are posted at security checkpoints. >> just removing a drunk passenger from a plane is going to require at least two officers to go to that.

well, that's our two officers. now all we're left with are two officers at the checkpoints and they're separated from each other. if another call or another indent comes up at that time, who is dealing with that? >> reporter: passengers don't seem too concerned. have you seen officers walking around or any bomb sniffing dogs? >> actually we haven't today. i haven't seen any extra security. but i'm still not worried. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. happening now family and friends regular this man, 31-year-old brian higgins who was found badly beaten. he wound up with no identification at san francisco general hospital which made a plea to the public to help identify him. he was reunited with his family the next day, but this afternoon at the moment they removed him from life support, a vigil began. higgins went by the name of feather lynn. images of him and feathers lined

the sidewalk where he lived. >> he's like my son. >> i feel really sad. >> it has not been easy. it's been incredibly painful and there has been a ton of tears shed, and a lot of really deep heartache from this. >> reporter: police have not made an arrest in the case but say they do have surveillance video of the attack. oakland police are asking for the public's help to find a driver who struck and killed with william hawk back in april. it happened whale the 68-year-old man was crossing the road early on a saturday morn g morning. >> now the driver of that car stopped, got out of the car, according to witnesses. appeared to have checked on him. got back in their car and left the scene. >> hawk was thrown about 50 feet by the impact. police say the male driver was in a white audi or infinity suv. investigators say the vehicle like ly had front end damage an they're asking with anyone who has information on the suv or driver to call oakland police.

they're offering a $10,000 reward. a politically conservative group is urging parents to pull their kids out of public schools. >> the call comes amid a sex education controversy in fremont. tonight the fremont unified school district will vote whether to shell ve the book. the group savecalifornia.com calls it disturbing and it is advising parents to home school or send their children to church schools. the school district may decide to use the book if changes are made. workers will not go on strike against macy's in union square and stones town. the united food and commercial workers union agreed to a new labor contract with macy's and lead eers are urging their membs to ratify the deal. part of it calls for letting employees continue to earn commissions on the merchandise they sell. this new contract covers about 1,200 employees at those two macy's locations. their prior contract expired in may.

robin williams will receive a special honor in new york about 45 minutes from now. that's when broadway theaters will dim their marquees for one minute in honor of the comedian and actor. williams last appeared on broadway when he played a tiger dpoes in bengal tiger at the baghdad zoo in 2011. he also had his own one man show robin williams live on broadway in 2002. >> williams' daughter has signed off of twitter and instagram indefinitely upset over people making krcritical comments abou her dad on social media. before closing her account she may have channelled her late father in poking back at those who made negative comments. she wrote, know that some small, giggling part of him is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car right after you had it washed. she is joining her brothers issuing statements of grief over their father's suicide. >> we've heard a lot about the many lives robin williams

touched in the bay area. >> we've learned about the battle that he waged against inner demons, that fans never knew existed but some of his friends certainly did. >> wayne freedman is live now outside the doubt firehouse in san francisco with somen sight from a close friend. wayne? >> reporter: this is not just about the impact robin williams made in life but now the impact he's making in death. over my shoulder the crowds are here it at the doubtfire house. they're not getting smaller. we are another day down the road of retrospection. i sat down with a good friend of robin which wiilliams, a comedi used to go bike riding with him almost every week. robin used to call that bike mobile therapy. today he told me how during their last ride ten days ago it was not the same robin williams he used to know. >> our last ride ten days ago was very different. he barely spoke on the ride. he was very distracted and stressed. we didn't play around much

before. we didn't play around much after. we didn't play around on the ride. and i mentioned it to his happened letters and managers and they, of course, were aware it have and doing everything they possibly could. but, yeah, that was the robin williams i had never seen before in all the years i had known him and probably not too many people had seen. skinny, lost a lot of weight, very distracted and i was very concerned. >> reporter: was he reachable? >> i don't know. i don't know much about depression, but i'll tell you this, if it can get inside a guy that wonderful and that kind and that full of life and that vibrant with so much to live for, it is a monstrous, hideous bug, man. i mean, people said i can can't believe robin williams killed himself. robin williams did the not, i can tell you that. no, no. some awful, awful thing got inside of him. >> reporter: now that's a serious take from a man who spends is his life making people laugh as robin williams did. after that interview i asked steele if it's too early to define what robin williams' legacy might be. he had to think about it for a

while. he said it might be early but maybe this. 30,000 americans kill themselves due to depression every year. he said if robin williams could make people aware of that, then that's a pretty strong legacy. live in san francisco, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> wayne, thank you. really interesting insights there. and some poignant comments from henry winkler. the two became friends after williams appeared as mork on an episode of "happy days" in 1978. that character made which wiill star because he went on to do "mork and mindy" after that. his talent was limitless. the worst part of his passing is not just that his talent has been silent but knowing he had been suffering is for so long. >> the pain that he must have been experiencing inside, it must have been excruciating. and that is more tragic for me to know that he lived with that as long as he could and then

people in new york and new jersey are cleaning up today after a storm slammed that region overnight more than 12 inches of rain fell this islip, new york on long island.

that's typically the rain they get all summer. cars flooded. fire crews had to use boats. >> oh, no. >> a boat someone is using. >> this trapped driver had to make a jump for it after a flash flood overwhelmed his car in phoenix. up to an inch of rain. fire crews were called in to rescue nearly a dozen people. one person was taken to the hospital. another flash flood warning was in effect today. >> another scene, the hospital there a wall of water burst through a set of locked doors flooding the cafeteria. officials estimate nine feet of water gushed into the room after heavy rains the day before backed up all the storm drains. no one was hurt. >> several bay area school d

still stranded. >> you look at different ways to move people who are in a very dangerous place on that mountain to a safer position. >> reporter: a pentagon official wouldn't give a time line but says there's no question speed is of the essence. britain's prime minister shared his support for whatever comes next. >> britain will play a role just as we played a role with british planes and aid helping to keep these people alive in a really desperate situation. >> despite the clear risks, the obama administration insist -- >> the role is not one of re-entering combat on the ground. it's how to provide humanitarian assistance to this affected population. >> reporter: those forces will certainly be armed and will be operating in enemy territory. officials say there are fewer people stranded than first expected, not tens of thousands.

but they're not certain. the conditions are still dangerous and dire. last night the u.s. military conducted a sixth humanitarian aid drop. they have delivered nearly 100,000 meals and more than 27,000 gallons of water to the displaced and desperate yazidis. there needs to be a lasting solution and president obama will make a decision very soon. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> the military struck several terror sites across gaza after claiming five rockets were launched at israel. they were in a three day truce but that expired. earlier today he is rail and hamas had agreed to extend that truce another five days. it's not clear if it will unravel the ceasefire. >> an american woman was found dead and stuffed into a suitcase

out a resort. police have arrested her 19-year-old daughter. her body was found tuesday inside the trunk of a taxi parked in front of an upscale hotel. she was from just outside of chicago. they say security video shows the woman arguing with her daughter's boyfriend in the hotel lobby the day before. >> gruesome. ebola has claimed the life of another leading doctor in the fight against that disease. the virus outbreak has killed more than 1,000 people in west africa. two americans are being treated for ebola. they're improving. they were given an experimental drug in the u.s. the ucf doctor recently returned. >> nick is live. >> reporter: he has been on the front lines of the virus working with other health care professionals doing all that they can to stop the dead lie

spread of ebola. he's on his way back because he says that virus continues to claim lives. >> i don't want everyone on my team to die. right now they're putting themselves at risk. >> reporter: he's doing research and fighting the spread of the deadly ebola virus, a fight he says is far from over. >> i think there are so many battles that we are facing in this war against ebola that success to me is winning all of the small battles along the way. >> reporter: he says it is the worst in history. officials from the african union met in ethiopia to discuss the extent of the outbreak in west africa. >> it is a disease for poor people and poor countries. so that's the main challenge

>> reporter: of the more than 1800 suspected or confirmed cases reported by authorities, at least 1,000 people with the symptoms have died. a tennessee doctor who came face-to-face with the outbreak is out of quarantine and talking about his ordeal. >> the time of day or night and so it was somewhat difficult. >> reporter: volunteers on the ground are putting themselves at risk to treat patients and fight the disease. and next week he'll be among them. he's made almost a dozen trips since the outbreak. >> the impetus of my visit will be to conduct infection control trainings. >> reporter: prot kocol that cat be learned soon enough. >> ultimately success is when we see no more people die of ebola. >> reporter: nick smith, abc 7 news. you can donate to the well body alliance and help with their work in africa through their website.
