good morning, america. and breaking overnight, flash floods from the southwest to the northeast. over half a foot of rain in new england. such a big downpour, people pulling out snow shovels to try and get rid of the water. and a dramatic rescue in new mexico. this man pulled to safety after being swept away. also escalating overnight, protests turning violent outside st. louis, missouri. police in riot gear using tear gas, the angry crowds, the cops refusing to name the fellow officer who killed an unarmed teen as death threats mount against the police department. terrifying scene in the suburbs caught on tape. fire geysers launch manhole covers into the air. flames shooting out of the ground. what set off these shocking explosions?

>> if you add july and august their average is up. in portland, maine, that's what fell in hours overnight so this is the scene there. look at this from rhode island. water rescues going on so many places in new england, receiving anywhere from 3 to, yes, over 6 inches, so this same system that we've been talking about for days has now done its job and it's moved out for most people. look at this. some of the totals went from 6 down here, 13.27 is what ended up in parts of long island. and you were just seeing pictures where they were scooping the water out in portland, maine, right there, their total, 6.43, the accumulated rainfall. here's what you have yet to see that low pressure system still up in canada. really driving the cold front all that heat and moisture up there. we're going to be slightly drier and certainly cooler. if you have not yet walked out the door in the northeast, get ready. it feels a little more like fall this morning. a few showers behind it. either way getting rid of that thing and saying good-bye. we're done with you. >> see you later. >> all right, ginger. we'll turn to that other

break story overnight, the violence erupting offer the streets of st. louis. these were incredible pictures coming in. police in riot gear firing tear gas to break up protesters angry over the shooting death of an unarmed teenager. the police chief weighing in on whether or not to reveal the officer who shot him injured in the accident and we get his condition. abc's steve osunsami is in ferguson, missouri, with the very latest for us, steve. >> reporter: there are many who feel the police could have used a lighter hand. they arrested two reporters and an elected official after they didn't move fast enough. a state senator says she had tear gas thrown at her and she approves the budget for the state patrol. even president obama has been briefed on the situation here. overnight, protests turned violent again on the streets of ferguson, missouri. police responded with tear gas sending the crowd running. as civil rights groups protest the police shooting that killed 18-year-old michael brown, and the lawsuits mount, the chief of police telling abc news his

officer was hurt in the incident. authorities say either brown or his friend fought with the policeman before the shooting. >> his face was swollen so he'd obviously been hit or punched or something like that. >> reporter: he says he and his officers are getting death threats daily and says he won't release the name of the officer involved in the shooting unless his officer's charged with a crime or a court makes him then he could always appeal. prosecutors say it could take weeks before they decide if the shooting is a crime. >> we have difficulty reaching a lot of witnesses. they don't contact the police. you know, we're having trouble locating them. >> reporter: they are talking with dorian johnson who was walking with brown when he says the officer tried to get them off the street. >> he tried to force his door open. but we were so close to him, it ricocheted off us and bounced back to him and i guess that, you know, got him a little upset. >> reporter: take a look at this exclusive video from the scene. there's the officer's suv. police say he started shooting from inside. >> shot eight times. >> reporter: listen as this

neighbor describes what she saw. >> the first shot he shot out of the car. the other shots he stood over him and pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow. >> reporter: for now the concern is that racial tensions here are about to explode. there's been a lot of talk about whether michael brown had a record which his family says is an offensive question but this morning. st. louis county police tell us no, no arrests, no convictions. david. >> all right, steve osunsami. he's been there every step of the way. >> and he'll stay there. to the crisis in iraq american troops on the ground assessing the situation where refugees are trapped by militant extremists and we're learning the situation on the ground may not be as bad as first thought. abc's martha raddatz has the very latest. she joins us this morning from washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this morning the pentagon says those air strikes and humanitarian airdrops with another one overnight have broken the siege on that mountain where so many have been stranded, meaning that potential

rescue which could have involved u.s. ground troops has been put on hold. a small u.s. team of marines and special forces landed on mt. sinjar wednesday to assess the options for a rescue. but what they found, far fewer refugees than expected and many in much better shape. while there were fears that tens of thousands were trapped on the mountain, with the iraqi rescues and people making their own way down the mountain, the number is now believed to be only in the thousands and the pentagon says all have access to the food and water from those u.s. airdrops. air strikes too diminishing the number of isis militants surrounding the mountain. the white house acknowledging the u.s. was considering sending u.s. forces to help with what could have been a dangerous rescue. although insisting they would not be combat troops. but the apparent success of the airdrops does not mean the crisis is over.

to the east of the mountain in erbil ill-equipped kurdish forces are struggling to halt advances from isis forces, armed with heavy weapons stolen from iraqi security forces. >> isis tanks, their artillery they captured from the iraqi army depots, they cannot match up to that. they're outgunned and overmatched. >> reporter: the u.s. is providing weapons, but not fast enough for the forces on the ground. as for that potential rescue, the u.s. has surveillance aircraft in place and if the situation deteriorates, the military could move in. david. >> ready at a moment's notice. all right, martha raddatz with us live this morning, martha, thanks. we'll turn now to that awkward meeting last night between hillary clinton and her former boss, president obama, the former secretary of state saying she wanted to hug it out with the president at a party on martha's vineyard last night. it comes after some very critical remarks about his foreign policy. our chief white house correspondent jonathan karl on the vineyard for us this morning. jon?

>> reporter: good morning, she came. they met, they parties. we still don't know if they actually hugged. all the white house will say is that the obamas enjoyed spending time with the clintons and, quote, the menu consisted of surf and turf and pasta. the obamas danced nearly every song. a good time was had by all. before the party mrs. clinton sought to smooth things over at a book signing here on martha's vineyard but look what happened when i asked her specifically about the president's handling of iraq. >> do you think he was handling the situation in iraq right now -- i mean, would you be doing it differently. >> i'm excited about signing books. [ laughter ] >> always fun when jon shows up. did you get a signed book. >> reporter: i did not and as you can see she was not too into answering too many questions at the book signings. but she did sign a lot of books, just mott one for me, david. >> don't hold your breath. jon karl this morning. thanks. we'll get over to amy robach who is tracking the other

headlines overnight. >> good morning, everyone. we begin with pope francis making history. this morning he became the first pope to visit south korea in 25 years. as he arrived, north korea fired several short-range missiles into the sea. the pope later telling the crowd in seoul that peace requires forgiveness and mutual respect. but on social media today, far more people were talking about the humble car the pope chose for his visit. that's a small kia appropriately named the soul. also happening, israel and hamas agreed to extend their cease-fire for five days giving both sides a chance to continue negotiating a long-term truce. palestinians say progress has been made. back at home a scare at sea for people riding a ferry from cape cod to boston. a massive wave sent water crashing into the windows and through the ceiling. abc's paula faris shows us the damage. >> the boat is sinking. >> reporter: terrifying moments caught on tape. 42 passengers rocked by a giant wave that slammed into this ferry.

>> it was insane at some point i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: shattering these windows 20 feet above sea level. this morning we spoke to ariel shrum who was on that fateful excursion. >> first thing that went through my mind was actually the "titanic." >> watch as frightened passengers rushed to put on life vests as water pours in. >> everyone is freaking out as the water starts to pour in. >> many knocked around from the rough surf feeling the effects shortly after. >> people around me became seasick and i started playing my trumpet. ♪ >> reporter: as arielle plays his trumpet to help calm passengers, the boat regains power and slowly makes its way to boston with a coast guard escort. the captain suffered cuts to his hand. luckily, no one else was seriously injured. >> it looks like that scene in "the perfect storm." >> for "good morning america," paula faris, abc news, new york. >> so glad everyone is going to be all right. it was a fiery scene in nashville. a tanker overturned, spilling fuel, bursting into flames.

some of it fueled and then spilled into the sewers, setting off a string of explosion, launching manhole covers into the air, shooting flames up from underground. look at that. this is incredible. and no one, no one, was seriously injured. comcast is once again apologizing for a customer service snafu that's gone viral. a man from the chicago area says he was put on hold, and there he has the proof, for 3 1/2 hours, while trying to cancel his tv. so long they actually closed while he was on hold. comcast calls this unacceptable. well, a back-to-school surprise near houston. yep, that is a large alligator. and it was caught lurking right on the front doorstep of a middle school. it took a while but officers were finally able to safely remove him. all right. finally, a thief in north carolina decided to steal a safe from a local store. but then he had the problem of trying to figure out how he was going to get said safe home. his decision, not a smart one.

we love dumb criminals. he tied the 100-pound safe to his car, dragged it down the street to make his getaway. things were going swell for two miles until he drove by a police officer because you are looking at dash cam footage there of said safe being dragged behind passing a police officer. >> oh, no. >> needless to say he got caught. >> he passed on a double yellow line, too. come on. >> hey, friendly officer. don't mind me. that's a safe behind me. >> and the double line thing, i mean -- what was he thinking? >> massive violation. >> all right. thanks there. now to the new hampshire girl who returned home last month nine months after vanishing. her lawyer is speaking out revealing disturbing new details about her abduction and abc's ryan smith is with us and has more on this. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: good morning, robin. since she returned home to her family a few weeks ago after disappearing for nine long months neither abigail or her family representatives have spoken publicly about what she says she endured until now.

overnight, the lawyer for abigail hernandez, the 15-year-old allegedly snatched off the street last october, as she walked home from school disappearing for nine months, speaking to abc about the teen's ordeal. >> she was violently abducted by a strange man. >> reporter: and hinting at the trauma he says she suffered. >> she is a young child who has suffered really unspeakable acts of vice. >> reporter: hernandez was last seen in the public eye here at the arraignment for 34-year-old nathaniel kibby just days after she returned home. flanked by her family, never making eye contact with her alleged abductor. he was charged with felony kidnapping. kibby has not yet entered a plea. while prosecutors haven't ruled out additional charges hernandez's lawyer thinks more are coming. >> when the investigation concludes, and all of the evidence is presented to the grand jury, that we would expect it'll be additional charges filed. >> reporter: now hernandez's lawyers say abby and her family want to deal with the speculation that abby went

willingly after meeting kibby on line. >> they had no relationship. she had no knowledge who he was. she didn't know who he was. she was abducted. >> reporter: authorities continue to search kibby's home in gorham, new hampshire, including this shipping container which prosecutors say was split into three sections but wouldn't elaborate further. meanwhile, her attorney says abby faces a tough road ahead. >> what she needs is some time to be able to work with her professionals and have some time to become physically and emotionally stronger. >> reporter: neither her lawyer nor authorities are disclosing specific details about how she returned home or what kibby did to her during her alleged captivity. her lawyer saying he didn't want to compromise the case and that's not unusual in ongoing investigations but more is likely to come out during the preliminary hearing where prosecutors must present enough evidence to bind kibby over for trial, robin. >> the family thought it was important to get out in front and say, hey, wait a minute, everything people are thinking -- >> right. >> his point was if it was your daughter you wouldn't want these

things said about her so please respect their privacy. that was key. >> understandable. all right, ryan, thank you. we'll turn to that deadly collision on the racetrack involving nascar champ tony stewart, kevin ward jr. will be laid to rest today and his father is now speaking out this morning for the first time. he was at the track when all that happened. angry about what he witnessed with the fans there and abc's gio benitez has more. >> reporter: this morning, kevin ward jr.'s father is speaking out after his son was struck and killed saturday night on the racetrack by nascar great tony stewart. the senior kevin ward telling "the syracuse post standard" tony stewart was the best damn driver by far on the track that night. why he had to go up as high as he did and hog my son, there is no reason for it." after an initial accident with stewart ward jr. got out of his sprint car during that race. you can see him right there in this youtube video pointing his finger angrily apparently at stewart.

but seconds later, the right side of stewart's car hit ward killing him. one of the other drivers who was racing on that dark track telling abc news, he saw ward get out of the car. >> i saw right away that he was really mad and he was pointing at my car at that point because it looked like he was looking for someone. >> reporter: ward's father telling "the post standard" apparently tony stewart was the only one driving out there who didn't see him. stewart has not spoken publicly since releasing a statement earlier this week saying "there aren't words to describe the sadness i feel." ward's family now preparing for today's funeral as investigators keep looking for evidence. they have not ruled out criminal charges against stewart. in fact, experts say if prosecutors believe stewart recklessly caused the death of another person, he could still be charged with second degree manslaughter. for "good morning america," gio benitez, abc news, new york. >> every time you see that video, we continue to think of the family especially today.

sheila von weise mack stuffed inside this silver suitcase. the luggage left in the trunk of this cab. detained for questioning -- >> no cameras. >> reporter: mac mk's own 19-year-old daughter henry boyfriend tommy schaefer. they told investigators they had escaped after being kidthatted by armed gang members who murdered her mother. but investigators say surveillance video shows the mother and daughter arguing in the hours before the murder. later, police say the young couple called for a taxi placing several suitcases inside before going back in the hotel to check out, they said, when they didn't return, hotel security discovered the suitcase. >> it's just really sad. >> sheila mack lived for years in this suburban mansion near chicago. former neighbors say police became a familiar sight here. the oak park police department saying they were called 86 times over the last decade. mostly for domestic

disturbances, those who live on this block say the mother and daughter had a troubled relationship, arguing often and that sheila hoped the recent move to this downtown high-rise would help. >> every family has got its issues and you just hoped this move was going to make things better. >> reporter: in a facebook post, schaefer, a self-proclaimed rapper wrote leaving august 4th for indonesia. might not come back. mack and schaefer aren't charged but are refusing to answer questions until they have an attorney. as investigators work to figure out how an exotic family vacation ended in such tragedy. for "good morning america," alex perez, abc news, chicago. all right, alex, thanks so much. we turn to that radio talk show host charged with shooting his wife with a rifle during an argument outside their home in an ohio suburb and frantically called 911 claiming it was an accident but what are police saying this morning about this? abc's mara schiavocampo is here with us. good morning. >> david, good morning. police say that talk show host is trying to talk his way out of a shooting but they're not

buying it and he now faces criminal charges. >> i was taking my rifle out of the trunk and it shot my wife. >> reporter: it's a frantic plea for help. >> okay, where did she get shot at? >> i don't know -- >> reporter: local ohio talk show host blake seylhouwer telling a 911 dispatcher he shot his wife by accident injuring her. >> okay, you said the gun accide accidentally went off inside the vehicle and it shot her in the head? >> no, no, i was taking it out of the trunk and it went off and i went off. >> reporter: this morning police say they do and it's nothing like seylhower's version of the story. >> through the investigation we determined that it was thought an depth. >> reporter: law enforcement officials claim 36-year-old seylhower and his wife misty were arguing outside their home in an upscale cincinnati suburb tuesday afternoon when they say he intentionally took a rifle out of his trunk and fired a

shot on purpose hitting the driveway. police say shrapnel from the bullet and concrete hit misty in the leg, side and head. all while the couple's two young children ages 4 and 13 months were inside the house. >> the only thing that i've been told was said by her is he shot me, get him away from me. >> reporter: seylhower hosts a sunday morning show "small business sunday" on local talk radio station 55krc. >> the new voice for cincinnati small businesses we've got a jam-packed show today. >> reporter: his wife reportedly an executive producer at the station. now this radio host is a defendant appearing in court wednesday facing charges of assault and domestic violence. >> i'm so sorry. >> reporter: seylhower has pleaded not guilty saying the whole thing was a mistake. sticking to the story he told dispatchers. >> we believe the facts will ultimately show that there was no intent to do any harm.

>> reporter: now misty seylhower checked out of the hospital wednesday afternoon and she is expected to make a full recovery. in addition to the charges, blake seylhouwer now also has a restraining order against him protecting his wife and the kids. we should mention the kids were not hurt that incident. they are safe with relatives and okay. >> glad she's okay too. mara, thanks. feeling badly for people ending their summer with vacations in florida because ginger said it's rough going. >> a little stormy especially south of the stationary front but a good start to the day in a lot of places like orlando even though it's hot and steamy. so florida in august. you see plenty of sunshine from wf tv, our affiliate but you will see storms build and certainly in central all the way here you can see the model kind of popping out storms through southern florida, as well. 89, ft. myers, 91, miami. 92 for jacksonville so that's south of that stationary front then we wanted to mention there is an air quality alert for four cities in texas including austin, dallas, houston and san antonio, very warm and you've got that suppressed air so kind

>> i'm going to get you. >> reporter: on five days this summer using an infrared thermometer at the hottest time of day "gma investigates" tested playground equipment across the country recording the highest temperatures. this metal surface in l.a., 129 degrees. this baby swing in houston, 138 degrees. this swing if phoenix, 150. the blacktop at the same playground, a whopping 185 degrees and on the plastic slides we tested, 158 to an unbelievable 189 degrees. at 140 degrees it can take as little as three seconds for a child to get a second degree burn and five seconds to get a third-degree burn but if you think the temperature outside has to be sweltering for playground equipment to heat up, think again. when this woman took her kids to the annapolis zoo it never crossed her mind to check the temperature of the equipment. her then 22-month-old girl continuely headed straight for

"the washington post" says they include a six-week suspension for the first time offenders and a one-year ban for a second offense. well, a warning to homeowners. police near los angeles say robbers posing as delivermen are behind a growing number of home invasions. you can see them here even carrying flowers, but police say after the men ask for a signature, they barge inside and

hold people at gunpoint. well, a south carolina mother is outraged after she was arrested for cursing at her children. danielle wolf was charged with disorderly conduct when a shopper at the grocery store told an officer she had used the "f" word. wolf says she was talking to her husband, not her kids, but here's the law in the city of north augusta. it defines disorderly conduct as obscene words uttered while in a state of anger in the presence of another. thank goodness that law does not exist in newsrooms or in the "gma" studio. wolf, unfortunately, for her, heads to court next month. didn't know that was the law. wow. remind me not to go there. a surprising report about salt this morning. is too little of it just as bad as having too much of it? going against conventional wisdom, a large new international study found low salt diets may be a health risk for some people, but the american heart association disputes that and still recommends 1500 milligrams per day.

doctorfer? >> i'll go with it. >> in the new dictionary. when you combine aquifer and doctors. >> where does the responsibility lie in your opinion? >> well, i think it's a little bit like looking into a medical crystal ball when you're talking about someone living with morbid obesity, this is the outcome that we see in our doctor brains, you know, that train only goes usually in one direction, unfortunately. now, as a mom, there's more than enough guilt to go around. we all know that, and we don't need one more reason, but i do think it is a reminder there are things under our control for at least some amount of time and that's what we should try to control. >> do you think it's a good way to get the message out or is this fat-shaking as some have said? >> well, you know, i actually did a year of research working with morbidly obese patients and saw, unfortunately, a lot of fat-shaming and unfortunately sometimes even from within the medical community and that's wrong either way. but i think that the real issue or problem with this video is that it implies there's just one reason for obesity, and we know
