>> right there with them, our ice bucket brigade this morning, getting ready for a massive ice bucket challenge, could be the biggest yet. it could be a bit chilly to add to the chill that we're about to feel. i think half the crowd is there just to see michael strahan, sorry, he already did it. >> that is a bit later but we'll begin, david, of course, with so much that's happening this morning. that situation in ferguson, missouri, calm prevailing overnight with the highway patrol taking command there. we're going to speak to missouri's governor and ferguson's police chief in just a moment, but first abc's steve osunsami is there again for us this morning in ferguson. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we're outside where police have just announced the name of the officer involved in shooting of michael brown, his name is darren wilson, a six-year veteran of the police force here. >> hands up don't shoot. >> reporter: overnight the violence and riots of the past week disappeared replaced by a much different but dramatic sight.

a huge first -- the leader of the highway patrol was walking side by side with demonstrators. >> this is my community. a lot of people that i saw walking and marching are people that i know so as the old saying i have a dog in this fight, i've got a big dog in the fight. >> reporter: and here's a picture of the st. louis metropolitan police chief taking a selfie with the protester. an entirely different mood after missouri's governor took patrol duties away from the local missouri's governor took patrol duties away from the local county and police and this image from wednesday, too much. even the president condemning both the looting and the police action. >> there's also no excuse for police to use excessive force against peaceful protests or to throw protesters in jail for lawfully exercising their first amendment rights. >> reporter: those rights are now being exercised across the country, a national moment of silence in d.c., chicago and boston. young people crowding times square, all asking for justice

for michael brown and demanding police identify the officer who shot and killed the unarmed teen after what police say was a dispute in the street. >> you have to be concerned about the officer's safety, about his family's safety and you have to take measures to protect them but there comes a point in time where that name should be released because it's going to get out anyway. >> reporter: there's screaming and yelling from people who came here to listen to 24 announcement today. we expect to have more details throughout the day. robin? >> all right, steve, thank you very much. and joining us now the governor of missouri, jay nixon and ferguson police chief thomas jackson. thank you, gentlemen, both for joining us this morning. we certainly do appreciate it and governor ix nixon, how do you feel about it? is this quick enough for you. >> one step in the process and an important step. i think that will be a step on

the road to healing here and justice. obviously, we have had a very numberous week. i think the shifts we made yesterday to make those optional shifts to calm folks down with only one arrest. how deep quite frankly hthese wounds are. >> thankful that last night was much more peaceful because in part the shift that you made to the missouri highway patrol, why did you make that decision, sir? >> i felt that an optional shift would give us a different tone, open up a little bit of folks' ability to speak their voice and hopefully make a differen from the first?3 some progress. it allows them to focus their initial decision on getting these investigations completed.

>> you saw the images, the entire nation saw the images of a couple of nights ago and even you, governor said, it was more like a war zone in saying that was unacceptable. chief, is there anything looking back that you feel that you should have done differently. >> this has been a fluid situation. one thing i want to reflect on, through this whole process, not one protester, not one rioter has been injured during the whole thing and i think that's a credit to all law enforcement. >> all these changes were very effective. we saw that last night. do you believe that you learned from mistakes? >> oh, yeah. sure. but in the end, the tactics that were used, the perception throughout the country has been a little bit different than the actual reality on the ground. but, a lot of times perception is reality, we have learned a

lot from that. >> how do you assure the residents there that will be a fair investigation and everyone is just wanting to know that there will be justice, everyone is calling for justice, how do you show that sf. >> i think continuing to for press, both the justice departments and local to move their investigation. i was pleased to hear the chief indicate that this would be a day that finally that initial name will come out and we'll work to make sure thehuure ther security around that. >> well, i think it's just one step in the process and an important step and appreciate

the chief and the others getting that name out and be a step on the road to healing here and justice. we're going to turn to that surprising news about robin williams of his wife revealing he had parkinson's disease releasing this statement. robin's sobriety was intact and he was brave as he struggled with his own battles of depression, anxiety as well as early stages of parkinson's which he was not yet ready to share publicly. joining us, dr. jennifer ashton. this must have been so hard for him to carry this as well. now that we know this you were telling us there's an established link between parkinson's and depression. >> absolutely. there are separate brain issues but there is an association. we know about 20% to 40% of parkinson's patients suffer major depression and that's not just as a reaction to this tough diagnosis. the theory there are similar brain chemical changes in parkinson's and depression. >> the dopamine. >> exactly, that neurochemical. >> and you were saying, as soon as you see signs of this, there is early detection and new tests for this. >> absolutely. it's very important to take a good history as it is with any medical condition and then brain imaging, brain scans, there's something called a d.a.t. scan

that actually looks for low levels of that neurotransmitter dopamine often used to diagnose parkinson's. >> we know he took his own life but we want to give hope. is there treatment out there? >> absolutely there's treatment and you want to ideally incorporate the use of a neurologist with a psychiatrist and remain hopeful because there are effective treatments. >> all right, dr. ashton, always great to have you. thanks, jen. >> now to flash flooding across the southwest. monsoon rains washing away roads and cars forcing drivers to be rescued and there's more rain in the forecast. you know that ginger is tracking it all for us. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to both of you and you know, we had one inch in just ten minutes in parts of the mountains in colorado and this is what happens when you get that much rain that fast. washout in the west. >> i can't get out. >> reporter: flash floods devouring roads near tucson. >> my son is getting off the bus. should be coming any minute and he gets off over there. >> reporter: causing mudslides in nevada. >> behind my house and gets

quite scary at times. >> reporter: forcing rescues from this 73-year-old woman trapped in her car near colorado springs to these images just coming in from new mexico wednesday. >> wrap it around your wrist. >> reporter: that raging water below. >> hold on. >> hold on tight. >> come on. come on. >> reporter: officers bringing a teenager up just in time. outside denver, streets flooding after an inch fell in just 30 minutes. near las vegas -- >> the dock started to break apart and the roof started to fall apart and everybody rushed into the restaurant. >> reporter: and outside phoenix 50-mile-per-hour winds knocking these semitrucks over backing up traffic for hours and now all that moisture heads up, hits a storm and i wanted to show you who gets into it. parts of missouri, iowa and this is by the weekend. you see the heavy rain there spreading through all through saturday. david? >> all right, watching into the weekend. ginger, thanks. see you shortly. in the meantime, we turn to that incredible scene overnight. those two amish girls returning home a day after they were abducted from their family's

roadside vegetable stand. police searching for the suspect now and abc's gio benitez has been on the scene live in upstate new york. gio. >> reporter: david, good morning to you. we are just miles from canada and that is what had so many people here worried sick that these girls would be taken across that border but right now that headline found alive. this morning a manhunt is under way for the person or persons police believe abducted two amish girls before mysteriously letting them go overnight. >> there's still an active criminal investigation here because somebody still took these children away from their home. >> reporter: 6-year-old delila miller and her 12-year-old sister fannie now back home with their family after a frantic day-long search around oswegatchie, new york. >> they're cold. they were wet. they are talking to the fbi and the sheriff's department right now. >> reporter: it all started wednesday night. the two girls were working their family's vegetable stand when police say a red four-door sedan

pulled up. by the time it drove off, the girls were gone. their parents who do not have a phone running to a neighbor's house to alert police. investigators forced to work with only a sketch of the 12-year-old because many amish shun modern technology. they did not allow police to draw a sketch of the 6-year-old. then late thursday, after the small town gathered for a prayer vigil, a breakthrough. rescuers rushing to the family home after learning the girls were alive. authorities tell us the alleged kidnapper dropped them off in the small town of richville, about 30 miles from their home. >> the girls walked up to a stranger's house. thank goodness they had enough courage to be able to do that. knocked on the door and that person took them home. >> reporter: state senator patty ritchie speaking with their father before their return home. >> he said it was in god's hands now and shortly after we came back from the prayer vigil we got good news so maybe mr.

miller knew something the rest of us didn't. >> reporter: and back here at the search command center we can tell you that last night when that good news came in there was so much applause coming out of this building here and more good news right now, we're told those two little girls appear to be healthy this morning. david. >> that is good news. what a scare. just glad they're back. all right. amy robach tracking the other headlines overnight. and she's right here now. >> that's right, david. good morning. we begin with breaking news out of tennessee for the second straight day, word that a tanker truck has crashed and burst into flames. this time it happened near a bridge outside of nashville and there is concern right now that that bridge could collapse. just yesterday we reported on a different tanker explosion that leaked fuel into the nashville sewer system setting off several explosions, fortunately no one was seriously injured. and a new mystery this morning surrounding that malaysia airlines jet that vanished five months ago. and apparently crashed in the indian ocean. $35,000 have now disappeared

from the bank accounts of four passengers. malaysian authorities say the money was transferred online to another account and then withdrawn. they say they've identified potential suspects. a new warning overnight about the ebola outbreak. the world health organization says the epidemic has been, quote, vastly underestimated because of unreported cases in west africa. experts saying extraordinary measures are needed to contain the disease. doses of an experimental drug ran out this week. a major development from the crisis in iraq, prime minister nuri al maliki has finally agreed to step down preventing what could have been a bloody power struggle. meanwhile, more u.s. strikes have destroyed armored vehicles controlled by militants in the north. and back here at home a daring heist at a major casino and now eight suspects have been arrested. police say a former security guard at caesar's in atlantic city was the mastermind allegedly using his knowledge of a routine money transfer to steal two plastic boxes with $180,000 inside.

most of that cash has been recovered. well, a frightening sight in southern california. i'll tell you what you're looking at, there's a swim iron the left, just a few feet away from a great white shark. lifeguards watching the entire time. since it was a juvenile great white, they say it wasn't as aggressive. thank goodness. >> sure. >> but i don't know when it comes to aggressive, crocs come to mind. take a look at this. we got another close call. that's a tourist swimming for his life as a crocodile is chasing him across the water in mexico. thankfully someone on the beach threw something in the water to distract the croc, to scare him to give the man enough time to make it to shore. that is a good samaritan indeed and quite a scary scene. yeah, you guys are like, no. >> we need the ice bucket now. >> yeah. >> if i had to choose between those two i'm definitely going with the juvie. >> swimming parallel. >> oh, my goodness. >> lara, there's a big fun event

coming up. >> yeah, this is a story i hope puts a smile on your face. i know it did mine. the little league world series is under way. and a team of inner-city kids from chicago is taking the tournament by storm giving the windy city a whole lot to cheer about. >> it's over, chicago -- >> reporter: it was a big win thursday for chicago's jackie robinson west little league team. >> that ball is driven to left field. >> reporter: crushing their opponents, pacific little league of linwood, washington, 12-2 in their first game of the little league world series. 13-year-old pierce jones smacking three home runs. >> i've never played a game where i hit three home runs. i'm pretty sure it's the best game of my life. >> reporter: the victory bringing a much needed moment of pride to a city riddled with violence with 82 shootings occurring over fourth of july weekend alone. >> it means a lot to me and chicago. >> reporter: this is the first time a chicago little league team has made it to the world series in 31 years. >> there's been a lot of

good morning. we're still tracking some low visibility around santa rosa but not like yesterday, some fog and low cloud up there for three miles unlike the quarter mile yesterday. golden gate, foggy, west wind about 14 miles per hour. in the mid to upper 50s, a few 60s mountain view, also around antioch. as we look from our san jose bureau, temperatures close to average in the 70s and 80s. we may get a few 90s inland east bay and 60s along the you have made my life special by being apart of it.ecenough. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. on the stand pedro bravo seemed to have an answer for everything admitting that he was obsessed with his best buddy's girlfriend. that he made internet searches to for things like alibis and that he attacked his friend but he said the only person he intended to kill that night was himself. >> i feel like i'm going to regret the decision for the rest of my life. >> reporter: for the first time on thursday jurors hearing directly from the 20-year-old accused of murdering his best friend. >> did you have any malicious intent to kill christian aguilar? >> no. >> reporter: over an intense four hours pedro bravo sometimes rambling, often laughing nervously, as he testified about the sticky september night in 2012, prosecutors say he strangled christian aguilar in a fit of jealousy after learning that aguilar was dating his ex-high school sweetheart, erika friman. >> i was still very enamored

with her and i really wanted to get back with her. >> reporter: he testified he did get into a heated argument with aguilar. >> i strike him with my open palm in the face. and then i strike him again. >> reporter: but that he left aguilar alive. >> all i could tell is, he didn't get up right away but that he was still moving. >> reporter: bravo insisting the only life he planned to take that night was his own. even reading from his suicide note, he says he wrote it just after the fight. >> i'm sorry, there is no right way to explain why i'm doing this. >> reporter: but prosecutors say that note is all part of bravo's web of lies. alleging he killed aguilar in cold blood and buried his body in a shallow grave. >> the shovel that's been introduced into evidence, that is your shovel. >> yes. >> you bought it? >> yes. >> okay. you hid it? >> yes. >> reporter: but when confronted with the evidence against him, bravo seemingly danced around every word. >> chris admitted to you in the car he was dating erika, right.

>> he said he was going out with erika. >> oh. that's a -- there's a difference? >> reporter: even introducing a new twist about this jailhouse confession letter claiming inmates strong-armed him. and dictated every word. >> he basically say if you don't do this, then i'll just go get to your parents. >> reporter: now michelangelo was the cellmate that testified against bravo, saying he meticulously planned the murder down to the type of drugs to sedate him. pedro bravo has pleaded not guilty but today that jury may get the case. if they convict him he could face life in prison. robin. >> matt, thank you. legal analyst ryan smith for more on this. you never know if someone will take the stand. he decided to do so. why? >> he had to. because when you think about this case he actually provided a videotaped statement to police that was played in court. normally that's a defense attorney's dream because think about it this way, he gets to take the stand in the form of the videotape without being

cross-examined. what you want but had so many inconsistency, the evidence was piled up against him. he had to clear those up and really clear up his credibility. >> when we were all of us watching matt's piece and seeing him on the stand, pedro bravo, i saw your eyebrows go up a time or two. how did he do? >> from a legal perspective -- in this lawyer's opinion, awful, awful because you have to establish credibility and part of that is having consistent statements. so on the stand, he mentions what you saw in matt's piece and then this part about the letter, an inmate made him write that letter. did you punch him? did you get in a fight in the car or outside? all of these things he's had con politicking statements on and didn't do a good job clearing that up. the jury is who matters and the question is do they believe him but it looks all over the place. >> the question is, how does he get to reasonable doubt? >> only need one. that's the key.

we say that all the time. you only need one person on that jury to hang a jury or to convince others that he's innocent so one person has to buy his story hook line and sinker. if that happens you could see reasonable doubt. >> looks like we'll know soon because the jury could get it today. all right there. thank you, ryan. now, to a frightening story out of utah. the woman in critical condition after drinking sweet tea laced with an industrial cleaning chemical at a restaurant. this morning police investigating if it was intentional or an accident. abc's neal karlinsky with the story. >> reporter: 67-year-old jan harding is fighting for her life in this utah hospital after a simple sip of iced tea. >> she said, i think i just drank acid. >> reporter: in a "gma" exclusive the family is sharing the shock of something so unusual they don't quite understand it. >> the terror in her eyes and i looked down and said, i love you and she couldn't really even talk at that point. she just mouthed i love you too. >> reporter: police say harding got the iced tea at this dickey's barbecue pit and it shows a heavily toxic industrial cleaner was mixed in with the

and a dramatic night in suburban maryland with two construction workers being rescued from a collapsed trench. they had been working alongside a home when the trench wall fell burying them in dirt and mud up to their shoulders for two hours until rescuers were finally able to pull them out. both men were conscious throughout the ordeal. and a rousing reception for pope francis on the second day of his historic visit to south korea. 50,000 people packed into a soccer stadium with the pope. they even stood up and did the wave for him. earlier the pope changed his plans deciding to take a train from seoul instead of a helicopter so he could see more people, and he even took time to pause for a selfie with this very lucky young man. well, a fitting farewell in san francisco last night performed by paul mccartney. he and 49,000 fans said good-bye to the legendary candlestick park now set for demolition. it was nearly 50 years ago on that stadium when the beatles performed their final concert. paul mccartney just releasing these two pictures from that
