>> a couple notes that say please find homes for these cats. >> notes that read in part -- >> a neighbor down the street had a stroke and had to be placed in a care facility. >> do you believe that? >> i'm not sure. >> reporter: so here's what they know. many of the cats are kittens and most appear to be related, which means no spaying or neutering has been going on. someone somewhere has an obvious affection for cats and a lot of them. they love them enough to drop them off where people will care for them, at least, but who are they? >> it is a mystery. we don't know where they're coming from, out of county, in county, down the street. have no idea. >> reporter: just a lot more cats. in marin county, wayne friedman, abc 7 news. santa colllara county offics say this is the worst year for west nile virus. there were only two reported cases in santa clara county last year. county officials say half of all the infected birds in california were in santa clara county.

all patients are more than 50 years old. county officials aren't 100% sure what's behind this year's, but said the drought could be a factor. school starts in san francisco on monday, believe it or not, and the year begins with far for of a challenge than teachers and students deserve. thieves struck glen park school this week and stole a bunch of stuff. lillian kim is live with what exactly was taken. lillian? dan, it's the week before ì(lc% pammit their guard was down. some left their classrooms unattended and unlocked. security cameras mounted inside glen park school in san francisco caught images of the thieves. there were four total but two walked away with one teacher's prized possession, 18 ipads gifted to her by an outgoing teacher. >> someone spread joy and love to us and then someone took it from us. a lot of negative things are happening. fortunately, nobody got hurt. >> reporter: glen park school

had just wrapped up a kindergarten-parent orientation. there were also other parent-teacher meetings going on thursday. so the school staff seeing four young adults walking through the hallways did not appear unusual. >> they completely blended in with our community. they looked like parents and their interactions was very appropriate with what a parent or teacher would interact about. >> the principal says the security video shows the thieves trying to enter as many classrooms as they could. another teacher's wallet is also missing, but it's the ipads that will be tough to replace. about half of the students are on free or reduced lunch. >> if the robbers understood one iota what this school has been trying to do over the last 20 years, to take a gift to us, i would hope they would want to return them. >> the school is now appealing to the community, hoping they can be replaced by donations. in san francisco, lillian kim, abc 7 news. a mother has been arrested after police say she left her two toddlers inside a running

car in safeway. it happened at the safeway in livermore tuesday. police say the mother was inside shopping for about a half hour. the one and three-year-olds were inside the car that was not locked. livermore police arrested another mom last month. they said she left her toddlers inside a car while she gambled at a casino in livermore. wdrivers are facing delays after a fallen tree blocked southbound highway 17. it shows you where the tree fell looking south of los gatos. it happened before 2:00 this afternoon. they closed both lanes while they removed this big tree. traffic inched along for miles as you can see from our helicopter. both southbound lanes reopened about 3:20 this afternoon. scary moments for east bay drivers after a suspected carjacker drove a wrong way on a foi. ta

-- freeway. take a look at this cell phone video. it shows an orange taxi being dri driven eastbound going the wrong way. it finally stopped after clipping martinez. martinez police believe 40-year-old jamie elam stole the taxi cab from a driver a few hours earlier. police think he might have been using drugs. they crashed into the back of a fedex truck in the san francisco district. it happened just before 10:00 a.m. the man smashed into the back of the truck with a woman riding on the bike's handlebars. rescue crews took both to the hospital. neither of them were hurt. the traffic nightmare getting in and out of candlestick park for paul mccartney's concert, many never

made it inside to see the beatles legend on stage. those who did make it said leaving the concert was just as bad, some sitting in their car for hours. san francisco police chief greg sur is defending how his department handled the onslaught of people and their cars. >> we had the same complement of officers out there as we do for a non-rivalry football game, and evidenced by the fact we didn't have a lot of policing problems, we know we had a sufficient amount of officers out there. when 60,000 people all leave the same place at the same time, you get what you get. >> one bought tickets to the concert the day they went on sale as part of her 25th wedding anniversary celebration. michelle said she left her home at 5:30, then picked up her husband from work in downtown oakland. there was a lot of heavy traffic on the bay bridge. by 8:30, three hours after

michelle left home, she was still not at the concert. >> there was a guy selling t-shirts in the middle of the freeway. there were people getting out of their cars and starting to walk. i had never seen traffic like this. >> well, she's very disappointed, understandably, and michelle said she expected more from a mccartney concert and the city of san francisco. she now hopes to get a refund. heavy traffic also an issue for this mccartney fan, but more so after the concert. ray allen drove up from los angeles and said he made it just in time since the performance started late. but the mass exodus of people and the traffic after the concert made him miss his ride. he spent the night outside candlestick park. >> i sat right here and did nothing, enjoyed my memories of the concert. there was an awful lot of people. i mean, the big stadium is a farewell gig and a lot of people wanted to see it. >> allen got a t-shirt to

commemorate the historic event. he showed it off saying this one is special since it shows the date of the last concert at the stick. the 49ers are trying to make sure the traffic for their first ever pre-season game at the stadium saturday isn't a repeat of candlestick. david is live at the stadium. hi, david. >> reporter: hi, there. a lot has happened over the past few weeks to try to address concerns over traffic congestion ever since that first game on august 122nd. vca has completed work on a pocket that takes people home after the games, and a new rule allows fans to show up two hours early. as painful as it was for 49ers fans two weeks ago, they learned a lot from packed train platforms. the management plan has been tweaked. >> the timing of the signals was kind of a big deal.

we looked for areas of santa clara p.d. in terms of traffic control in certain locations, and then the dreaded cones placed the way they weren't supposed to be in one of the areas here off cashmere and lafayette. >> 70,000 fans will be converging on the stadium. the light rail and bus system suspect 11 to 12,000 will use public transit. traffic headaches could be eased if more people took public transit, and that includes buses. >> we'll have buses not only to off set the traffic on light rail, but we have buses in the station on fremont, we have buses from the cal tran station, so definitely don't just look at how can i drive there, how can i take the train, look at the buses next time. >> the ace train will be running. it's a five-minute walk from the stadium. red stickers have been issued to identify people who live in this

burst, two blocks west of berkeley high school. while he waited for east bay to fix the break, he grabbed a bucket and started watering his plants. >> we're trying to be responsible east bay customers and not water much s, but they t pree water going down the street, so why not get some buckets. i wish we had a pump. >> the fire department said one home had minor flooding in the garage. it's unclear how much water was lost. student activists are demanding that tuition rates remain frozen in the university of california system for two more years. hundreds marched to the office of u.c. president janet napolitano in downtown oakland. protest organizers fear they might raise the tuition for the 2015-'16 school year. that's because there is an expected revenue shortfall. a group of bay area students

in solidarity with refugee children. the 11 students gathered outside the immigration office to break bread. they hadn't eaten since monday. some cried as they ate the bread. we talked to one student yesterday who said she is fasting to get more aid for the central american children detained at the u.s. border. >> it's very difficult for me, but it's even more difficult for them, because they don't -- they're doing this not for their choice, it's a must. we really need to help these kids. >> several adults joined the students on their fast. they will continue to go without food for another 7 days. more than 16,000 central american children have thread their homes and have arrived in the united states during the past year. authorities in sonoma county are still actively investigating the murder of a couple killed ten years ago today. 26-year-old jason allen and 20-year-old alice kutzel days before they were found shot to death. the couple planned to get

married one month later. all this time later, tips are still coming in about the case. investigators say they are still hopeful to get it solved. new data shows that barely half of all murders in california are solved. this murder is from the california department of justice. the darkest green shows the areas where murder is the most. looking at some bay area cities from 2010 to 2012, oakland had more than a thousand murders, and roughly 35% of them were solved. san jose had just over 300, but its clearance rate is more than double for the city of richmond, which was 29%. experts say the level of police staffing and the volume of gang activity are two big reasons for the sddiscrepancies. fedex got involved today. they delivered this 737 boeing

jet to the fire district. it is not going to fly. it is going to be taken apart. the fire department will use it for training to simulate a train crashing into a building with mass casualties. >> i don't think there's anything like it anywhere. it is a new opportunity to do great things, mass casualty training, law enforcement responses, just a broad scope for opportunities of training. >> the plane is at the air force base. the trick is to move it a mile away. to do that shls th, they need t down street lights for the span of road. make sure your seat belt is low and tight across your lap for this takeoff. taking off from an airport in central england this week -- isn't that wild -- there is another shot of the funnel cloud trying to touch down. other flights were diverted around the airport while severe weather was in the area.

passengers on the ryanair flight took the right time to leave england and head south to sunny spain. more than $1 million has been raised for lou gehrig's disease or als with the ice bucket challenge. the company posted this video on youtube. people who take the challenge typically donate to als or they pay for refusing to douse themselves and then challenge friends. the challenge started in support of peter frates diagnosed in 2012. it robbed the former baseball captain of his ability to walk and talk. and now the challenge of sweeping social media has reached abc 7 news as well. >> oh, that's freezing! i made a donation to fight als. you can, too. >> you're doing the ice bucket challenge. looking good out there. we do have a link on our website, abc7news.com.
